IRVINE, California — Mazda said it is introducing a new vehicle — widely expected to be the 2014 Mazda 3 — on Xbox Live on June 26.

Mazda points out that it is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Mazda 3. The automaker also says the event will be the first to broadcast a live vehicle introduction and concert globally through Xbox consoles.

The reveal is noteworthy not just because of the debut of the highly anticipated 2014 Mazda 3, but because it signals a major shift in the way automakers take the wraps off a new model. The decision to introduce a new Mazda through a live stream on the Xbox online gaming platform directly targets the automaker's young buyers and puts the emphasis on social media.

Those with an Xbox 360 system can view the introduction on Xbox Live, Microsoft's online gaming and digital media delivery service. The event will feature a concert by the band Metric. This also marks the first time a concert like this is streamed live through Xbox. The automaker is associating the hashtag #GameChanger with the event so social media users can get the conversation started on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google+.

The curious can head to Mazda's Web site for more information, a countdown clock and the chance to win a $2,500 prize. As part of the promotion, 300 12-month Xbox Music passes will be given away. All participating fans will get a branded #GameChanger t-shirt with their personalized Xbox Live character known as an avatar.

"It's a digitally connected world, so what better way to reach our customers than through a connected platform like Xbox," said Russell Wager, Mazda vice president of marketing.

The event kicks off at 9 p.m. EDT on June 26 in New York City.

Edmunds says: Leave it to Mazda and Microsoft's Xbox brand to come up with an idea that may revolutionize the way cars are unveiled.
