TORRANCE, California — The 2014 Acura MDX will arrive in showrooms on Thursday, a few weeks earlier than originally expected.

American Honda did not explain the reason for the early launch of the 2014 MDX, but the automaker is clearly ready to see its redesigned crossover do battle with such competitors as the 2013 Buick Enclave and 2013 BMW X5.

The 2014 Acura MDX, the first two-wheel-drive version of the crossover, starts at $43,185, including an $895 destination charge.

The top-of-the-line 2014 Acura MDX with SH-AWD and Advance package starts at $57,400, including shipping.

The base 2014 Acura MDX with two-wheel drive slightly undercuts the 2013 Buick Enclave. The 2013 Buick Enclave with front-wheel drive starts at $43,355, including an $895 destination charge. The 2014 Acura MDX is also less expensive than one of its chief German rivals, the 2013 BMW X5. The base 2013 BMW X5 xDrive35i starts at $48,425, including a $925 destination charge.

BMW and Buick have not announced 2014 pricing on the X5 or Enclave.

The revised 2014 Acura MDX gets improved fuel economy, according to the EPA.

The 2014 Acura MDX two-wheel-drive version returns 20 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway. The 2014 Acura MDX with all-wheel drive returns 18 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway.

In comparison, the 2013 Acura MDX returns 16 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The 2014 Acura MDX gets a new 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 290 horsepower — 10 hp less than the outgoing model.

Edmunds says: The 2014 Acura MDX gets a quick start out of the gate.
