TORRANCE, California — The 2014 Acura MDX and 2014 Acura RLX are the stars of new retro commercials written by Jerry Seinfeld.

The spots will debut during the Season 3 premiere of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee on January 2, and are part of Acura's sponsorship of that online-only series created by Jerry Seinfeld.

Acura, Seinfeld and director Barry Sonnenfeld teamed up and filmed eight advertising spots to pair with the show, which have the same dry humor as the comedian.

The three-row 2014 Acura MDX stars in one spot called Picnic, where a family of five packs potato salad into the vehicle's spacious cargo area. Other spots show off the midsize luxury SUV's "easy-grip door handles" and "real nylon carpeting."

The 2014 Acura RLX is also featured, and the Japanese automaker ironically focuses on the "all metal exterior" and "plush cushion interior" of the full-size luxury sedan.

The 2014 MDX and RLX are sold through a network of 275 dealers within the U.S.

The absurd humor in the ads is similar to that of the Ron Burgundy ads Dodge created for the 2014 Dodge Durango. That should not come as a surprise considering Dodge saw real sales increases through that campaign.

Edmunds says: The 2014 Acura MDX and 2014 Acura RLX show the brand's new sense of humor, with a little help from Jerry Seinfeld.
