Overpriced, overvalued, and just not worth it.

From when I first bought the car it had problems. Normally these things happen, such as fixing the brakes. However because it is a Volvo, the parts are almost always double the cost of any other vehicle part! Unless you have the money to sometimes be dropping $1000 to fix the car, you'll find yourself regretting the purchase whenever a problem does arise.

Perhaps the safest, most cost-efficient used car!

This review is for a 17 year old car, which I purchased off craigslist.org last summer (I've now owned it for just over 5 months; logging about 7k miles) for the ridiculously low price of $1,600.00. When I bought it there were just 76,6xx miles on it. It had a clean CarFax report showing no accidents and 5 previous owners. It'd be understandable to assume, based on the above, that this car had been somehow neglected or was otherwise less-than; afterall, why would it have been resold so many times despite the unusually low mileage? Visually, the car is impressive. The paint is stunning. The wheels look almost new. The interior, save for the front passenger seat, is in amazingly condition. The glass, the trunk interior, the engine bay....all in amazing condition. Everything on the car works as it should- the windows, the air, the heater, defrost, indicators, brake lights, emergency flashers, sunroof, rear-seat head restraints fold down with the push of a button, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, intermittent wipers, etc. I've read reviews where others say the sound system is poor; personally, I find it totally acceptable except for the most 'spirited' listening occasions. The engine is strong, has no leaks and does not burn oil. I asked my local Volvo mechanic to check the transmission for any possible issues and he found none. I have had to replace one of the front strut mounts, and I understand this is a very common issue with these cars. This particular car was purchased new with the optional 17 inch wheels; tires for this car can cost about $225 each (cheaper options exist, yes; but, considering the weight of the vehicle and my driving tendencies I tend to prefer Michelin) but I found a set of 4 with 95% of the tread remaining for $250 (again, craigslist.org); $150 or so for mounting/balancing. DMV fees were very low as is insurance. We all know of the legendary reputation Volvo has around safety; this model is no exception. The car drives very well; steering is responsive and the car feels attached to the road. Perhaps more than any other vehicle I've owned, this car feels safe in the rain. It does not even hint at hydroplaning on the freeway during very heavy downpours. The front defrost system seems to have been adapted from an industrial application and is beyond capable of providing a clear windshield in any situation. The brake pedal is a bit soft, but the car is able to stop safely no matter what situation you've gotten yourself into. Back in 2002, this car sold for $39,745.00. In 2019, the value is between $1,889 and $3.512. (kbb dot com). Take a look thru listings on any site for used cars and try to find a safe, reliable, fully loaded 4=door sedan comparable to this vehicle for this amount of money. I don't think it can be done. Would you rather your son or daughter be in an old Accord or Camry (which cost more, on average, for a used car), or in this Volvo? Update: have now driven over 25,000 miles since I bought the car used. Has never failed to start or get me where I’m going. It’s a heavy, composed vehicle and I feel safe driving it at and above highway speeds. It’s comfortable and dependable. Repair parts can be expensive (more than a Honda or Toyota but less than a Mercedes or BMW). And I like that it’s not a Japanese or German car. For a used car, I don’t think you can get more vehicle for this amount of money. Just make sure you find one that’s been maintained. The most expensive used car is a cheap used car that’s not been regularly serviced.

It's comfortable, safe, plenty of cupholders, plenty of leg room, gorgeous interior. You can't really ask for much more as far as the interior goes. I love the heated seats in the winter. It handles nicely, and its pretty fast for what it is. I'm not sure if I'd go as far to say that its the best car I've ever owned, but it is a beauty. I've had some problems with the tail lights, when I shut the trunk they'll go out and I have to whack them a bit to get them back on. The winshield wiper fluid got disconnected, not sure why. I poured fluid in the resevoir and it just poured out onto the driveway. Car won't start if the gas gauge needle hits the red area.

Do not buy this car, run fast and far and buy japenese. It has been a complete nightmare. Pretty though. Kinda like the good looking husband that makes alot of money so it's okay if he beats the crap out of you every once in a while. Pure HELL.
