2009 Volkswagen Tiguan SE 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
My dad got this car in 2012 used. One previous owner, no problems. The turbo is punchy and this car is so responsive--super fun to drive. It's comfortable, got great space in the back seat and the trunk, and corners on a dime. None of that matters, though, because in 2015 it went lemon. After doing around $2,000 repairs to the leaky sunroof and some other minor things, the engine quit. Kaput. We sank $7,000 more into replacing the engine. This car has almost cost itself over in repairs since we got it, and I can't in good faith recommend it to anyone.

Don't get involved with a 2009 Tiguan. My wife and I bought one used from a dealer as a lease return with low mileage in 2012. We loved the styling, sportiness, and gas mileage. But it was very unreliable due to different things. The electric parking brake stuck while engaged and would not release. Weeks in the shop while a technician from Germany came here to replace the wiring harness. "We've never seen that before." was the common response. A broken fuel was spraying gasoline over the engine at one point not long after it had been in for repair. In the last 6 months, we replaced the struts in the front, replaced the blower motor (2nd time) and the entire heater box assembly, and had the exhaust valve manifold cleaned due to carbon buildup. Then, the timing chain skips and it's 7K to replace the engine using a used one that has almost the 146,000 miles on it that ours had. Very hard to walk away from this car, but sold it to a junk yard. Couldn't see spending more money on a car that wasn't paid for because of all the repair bills because something else WILL go bad on it. We were hoping to put another 100K miles on it but that just won't happen. Will NEVER buy another Volkswagen.

Have had to many maintenance problems to have to be fixed at tremendous cost. Have spent $10-13,000 on repairs and that does not include repairs made while under warranty. Will never have another VW of any kind.!
