DO NOT BUY THIS CAR
My family purchased a 99 passat auto 1.8 turbo back in 2008 with roughly 87,000 miles on it. It has been my daily driver since then and now is about to hit 120,000. Since buying the car we have had to replace the following in approximate order: Power Steering Rack: $800 ABS break module: $250 - (we did the install) Turbo - $1000 Engine Coil Packs - $300 We have also had to replace lots of little things. My headlight assembly shattered randomly while driving. The windshield wiper motor broke ($100 for that part!!!). When replacing it I pulled out a NAPPA motor so it was the second time the part had broke. This is on top of regular maintenance such as tires, oil changes, and breaks.
my favorite car
I took good care of the car, followed the maintenance schedule, and it never let me down. Bought it when my daughter was 2.5, gave it to her when she turned 16, got it back when she went to college. Geared for the highway. Turbo boost at any speed. Still gets 33mpg.

Not all that Bad
Reading all the reviews on the car I'm a little surprised. But I noticed most of them come from the wagon or v6 model. Then again I've had this car for only 6 months. It performs fine. I do have a problem with the abs module. But my brakes work fine for now. Its a German import. The parts are known to be expensive. That is a given and known fact that most people know, its no secret. The car is smooth and has plenty power for a 4 cyl. Good hwy mpg. The seats are a little hot. And engine displaces a lot of heat. But that doesn't make it a bad car. The high octane thing is annoying. Octane booster still helps even with 91 octane.
Poor Man's Audi
There's no better sedan for the money. I was going to buy an A6, but after checking out the Passat and the Audi side by side at an auto show, I decided to save 10k and get essentially the same car. Compare this interior with anything under $50,000- seriously. It will make you want to cry if you have to drive a Taurus or Malibu, and for the record, I'm a Ford fan. The build quality is superior, and I've had precisely zero problems in 3 years. A truly great car!
Never Again
I was so excited when I first bought my 1999 Volkswagen Passat. My joy disappeared after the frist few months. So many things have gone wrong with it, the hood release broke after only a few years, the ABS control unit is shot, the heated side mirrors worked for less than a year, the stereo system stopped functioning properly after less than three years (sometimes I can change stations, sometimes I can't and speakers go in and out)...I could really go on and on. The outside looks great. People are always surprised when I tell them how old it is. They say it looks brand new and my reply is, "yeah, but it's a piece of junk!" This car as been the biggest frustration of my life to date--enough to swear off VWs for life!
