This car is so cute. i wanted to sleep in it the first week we got it. Early on week took a 1,000 mile road trip. It was wonderful. I was surprised how little road noise there was. The car is now over three years old. It works perfectly. I have moved to a hilly area and would prefer a little more tourque in the higher gears. The body has held up well. The interior has done well but then I had the seats covered from the beginning. Overall, it is a fun car. It still competes well with the new models. I will probably keep it another 4 years (50,000) miles before buying another VW. PS This is our 4th VW.

I've had no serious problems with the vehicle, very satisfied. Great: value, ride, performance, comfort & reliability. Surprising versatility with hatchback design - carried lots of stuff that looked like it wouldn't fit. Only nuisance problem has been the oxygen sensors - hopefully rectified with the recent recall & repair.

After owning the car for less than a year the entire engine had to be rebuilt. The car has been in the shop enough times for me to drive all almost all of the dealership's car in different colors. After owning the car for a year and a half it was in the shop for about a month. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CAR!!!

I love driving my Bug, however I have had many problems with the electrical system..The windows have been fixed 5 times, the gas door has been fixed once, the Oxygen Sensors have been fixed twice, the trunk won't open with the electric switches, and the CD player won't work. However, I have had no problems with the engine. I would not recommend others to buy this car because of the annoyances of the problems.

At first we loved the car, looked great, roomy and drove nice. However, during the first year we developed Nothing but problems with no help from the dealer. Suspension problems, engine noise, cd changer was replaced 4 times, window broke, rubber coating in the interior is peeling, thermostat went bad, plastic console broke, seats have mysteriously stained. Service has been horrible. I cannot recommend VW to anyone. See www.myvwlemon.com - I am not affiliated but they helped me solve some problems. Do not buy this car.

Bought the car new. It's cute and fun to drive, but we've had way too many problems with it. It burns at least a quart of oil every 2000 miles. The gas tank door release has been replace three times (we allways keep a screwdriver handy to pry it open when it breaks. The interior finish is pealing. The center console broke and we've had a number of other interior problems. I'll never buy another VW.

I am a new drvier and student and I absolutley LOVE this car. It is very practical for my busy life, and fun to drive! It holds all my sports equipment when I need it to, and when I fold up the seat I can load in my friends and get to where we need to go. I havent had any problems with the car and absolutley love it. And I have been reading other comments and seem to think that maybe it is the user and not the car. I have also noticed that people seem to be having problems with the manual trans. Mine is an auotmatic and it is going just fine.

Pros: Great if you are considering the car for just two people, Nice head room and leg room. Attractive, I have had a lot of people stop by and compliment my car. Never had this experience before with other cars. Easy drive and park because of small size, Helps if you are living or commute to big cities. Decent mileage. Cons: Too little space in the back seats if you have extra riders. Cup holders (Yr 2000 model) are terribly placed. Cant fit in a medium size drink!! I have had frequent problems with engine "check" indicator turning on often. Heard of similar complaints from other owners too. Over all, a great second car for a small family!

This vehicle is very stable on the road, it has quite a power range in many gears, so that I can frequently skip gears if I am up to speed. I owned several VW Beatles years ago, and this car looks reminiscant to the early modles but handles like a Porsche. The acceleration is a joy as it moves one right into position in tight traffic.

I've had my Bug for a year and half and had only heartache. I thought a Bug would be a good choice as my aunt had her '78 Bug for 17 yrs and was in still great running condition when she sold it. I was disappointed to find that this high reliability no longer exists in the new Bugs. To begin with the sensors had to be replaced, and the seatbelt covers. Then the oil pan sprung a leek, the axle bent, the cd player broke. Now my driver's seat no longer stays locked as it should. The sunroof visor is now off track and to top it off my air filter is now over heating the car and causing it to die and need a jump start. I can't run the air at all. I've thrown over $4000 into the trash for this lemon car!

Took it in the next day after purchase to service the driver window because it didn't want to go up.The interior melts in the sun.Switches in the car fall off, like window switches. Cupholders detach therefore, i have a big orange juice stain on the passenger floor.Replaced both headlights at least once every year, very expensive, due to labor.VW made it difficult for customers to do themselves.Head of car hit pavement going over bumps.Forgot how many times I took it to get something fixed or replaced.AC filter needed to be cleaned within the 1st year and VW charged me for that. Hubcaps fell off in the 1st year of ownership.I hate this car.Even my Sentra from the 80's treated me better.

A lot of bang for the buck. I am a 6 foot, 240 lb male and have to say that the bug is the most comfortable and roomy car in its class. There's plenty of head and leg room up front. This is the most enjoyable aspect of my experience thus far, but don't think for a minute that it ends there. The car has been extremely reliable and I've found it quite a blast to drive. The 5 speed manual transmission has plenty of pep and is quite comfortable cruising at 90mph.

Noisy. Slow. Unreliable. Cheap interior pieces. Grossly overpriced. You'd think I was talking about a Hyundai? Nope. We're talking about the "new" Beetle, which is a more miserable experience than the "old" Beetle. Every emissions control piece has failed. Switches break. Bottoms out in car washes. Recalls. More interior rattles than cars 1/3 the price. Of 10 cars, this is the worst I've ever owned.

My bug is a problem free vehicle as long as I perform all of the maintenance exactly on time. It knows when something is late and will then cause problems. Local repair places won't deal with it however. www.newbeetle.org has a very active community that has taught me much about the car. I also have a Vag-com from Ross-Tech Industries to read my car's computer and save trips to the dealer.

My only problem with the car was when it was two days old. I had an electrical problem where the windshield wipers would go on, the emergency flashers would activate, and myriad other electrical impossibilities. It took 3 weeks to get it back to me... problem; a bad ground in the headlight. Since the day I got it back, it has been problem free. I really enjoy the spirit the turbo GLX displays and only now, after two years, have come to drive it a little more sensibly. My two biggest complaints are the useless cup holders and the reception on the radio, which is really bad on the AM side.

This is a terrible car! The worst I have ever heard of! It breaks all of the time. It keeps on getting recalled. Also, every time a headlight goes out, I have to take it to a dealership and pay someone $80 per hour to have a mechanic install the new headlight, because you have to have a special tool that not even my regular mechanic has. It cost me $50 to have a $5 headlight installed!

I've had this car for 2+ years. I have had no problems what so ever! The car has been reliable and I have averaged 27.5 mpg around town. The turbo is plenty fast and reaches speeds in excess of 120 mph with ease. The after market for this vehicle is huge if you like to costumize your car. I have tuned my 1.8T for 200hp 240 tq with no problems what so ever!

I purchased a 1998 Beetle only to have BIG problems with it. By 50,000 miles I had replace 4 headlights, 6 driving lights a brake handle, 5 window switches, 5 inside door handles, 3 radios and a set of brakes and rotors. Then the trouble really started. Two radiator fans, engine fuse box, air conditioner conpresser, computer and more. So, I figured it was just the first year of production, surely they worked out the bugs! NOPE! I got a 2000 Beetle and still had the minor problems plus a new clutch at 30,000 miles.

My parents bought my bug for me when I turned 16. I was so excited when I got it! But soon I started to hate it! So many things have gone wrong such as I have had to get a new clutch, thermostat, headlight, taillights, window motors in both Windows, plastic parts in the car are always breaking and etc. Taking it to a VW dealership is crazy because they charged me almost $400 just to look at it not to mention that the parts are very costly too! Overall its a cheaply made car! I would not recommend this car to anyone else!

This car is my nightmare. I hate it so much. I have it since January and I already spent $3,000 fixing it! I'm so tired of all that happened with it. And I'm broke obviously. Do never ever ever buy a Volkswagen whatever model it is that has more than 4/5 years. I'm from Portugal, and there I had a Renault twingo, you probably don't know what it is, but its way cheaper and way better than this thing! And my car was from 1994! Shame on you Volkswagen!

If you had asked me last week, I would have said the Beetle is a great car. But Fri, my 2000 1.8t GLX with 26K miles broke down - burned clutch. Clutch should last (with normal driving) until 50K. I did research today and found that the 1.8t clutch is expected to only last 20K-30K. That is POOR ENGINEERING DESIGN. I can not afford to replace the clutch for $1600 (quote given) every 2 years. VWOA was no help. I've had clutches last more than 80K in past (Ford).

Our Bug has driven well but constantly has warning indicators that go bad - first the airbag light and now the check engine light. The worst part is that every time the dealer fixed them, the problem recurred within 24 hours. Now we cannot pass the emissions testing simply because of this issue!

I fell in love with this car the first time I test drove one three years ago. I purchased my car this past May and though it's been back to the shop a few times (as can be expected for a used car), I've had no problems with it at all. My bug is very reliable and always starts, even on frigid PA mornings. The only complaint that I have about it is that I can't really do much of the mechanical work on it myself; it has to go back to the dealer. I can't wait untill I'm able to afford the convertable! I will definately buy another Volkswagen!

bought used in 2002, I'm so disappointed. I've literally watched my car disintegrate around me. I'm a fastidious car owner and keep my cars clean. I've had electrical issues, the interior has been disintegrating since the day I bought it used. The window switches break, the weird rubber dash coating scratches easily, the vinyl interior is coming away from the door, hatchback won't close properly, fog light bracket broke, water pump melted, the suspension's shot after 7 yrs normal driving, speakers are starting to crackle after normal volume levels, the emergency brake rusted thru within 3 yrs,the brakes stick and wear the pads down. The car is meant to be looked at not driven on a daily basis

I have had this car for 2 1/2 years and finally selling it. I enjoyed the car. Wasn't quite as reliable as you might expect a car under 3 yrs old, but it is a fun car to drive. I had no major mechanical issues, just minor things. I considered buying a '02 TurboS, but instead bought a '03 C230K. Will be sad to see my car go, it was a lot of fun drive. The 2.0 (2.slow) has some pep, but you would expect better gas mileage. Roomy, fun to drive, and retro styling is very cool!

We bought our 2000 Volkswagen Beetle new and we take care if it. The check engine light has come on every few months since we've had it. Notable fixes include, MAFS (x2), sensor (~one month ago) and it is on again. At $80 just to find out what is wrong, it gets expensive. Also, the passenger window wouldn't roll up, the door switches are broken, and the armrest latch busted. VW service wants $800 to change two brakes, and an arm and a leg for everything else. Don't waste your time. I've had two other good experiences with VW but this car was a mistake. AVOID THIS CAR!

Buying a 2000 VW Bug is a bit of a gamble, you can get a wonderful car, or a unreliable lemon, so its best to get your hands on a 2003+ model. I have had a myriad of electrical failures / hiccups with my Beetle, and I get the feeling that this wouldn't be so dire if I had a better dealership. I've also had the problems with coolant pumps, engine speed sensors, the fragile window switches and more recently the HVAC controls. Also, some of the interior trim chips/wears very easily. Yet I still can't hate my car, it's a good car for driving around town, gets a lot of attention, feels well planted on the highway, is very tough chassis-wise and it's generally pleasant. But it could be so MUCH more rewarding

I love my Volkswagen New Beetle, and I am thinking about buying a new one when I graduate from college this May. My parents and I bought the car used almost a year ago, and I have few complaints so far. I love the car's styling - very distinct and has a nice, techno feel. It offers a lot of luxuries that most cars in its class do not. Overall, it is pretty reliable, too. I have, however, had one very significant problem: my A/C system just failed, and it had to be replaced. I have an awesome independent mechanic, though, and he fixed it for about half of what the dealer quoted me.

We are nearing the end of our 3 yr lease term on a 2000 Turbo New Beetle and I couldn't be happier! This is without question the most unreliable vehicle I have owned in the last 12 years (out of 8 vehicles). I have owned 2-Chryslers, 2-Jeeps, 2-BMWs, Pontiac and now this junker...what a mistake. Problems: too many O2 sensors to count; catalytic converter; dead car (only to start mysteriously within 1 hr); gas cap cable; emergency brake cable; coolant loss (where did THIS go?); etc, etc. 2-yrs and 24K miles on the warranty...should have been a message at time of purchase: VW KNEW THIS ONE WAS A STINKER! Buy American!

I've had electrical problems galore with this car, to the point where they have replaced 4 sensors, and now finally the entire electrical cluster. The A/C broke. The power windows, and ABS system have malfunctioned. P.S. I only have 30,000 on the car.

This car is great for what it is. A fun, cute car perfect for one person, maybe two. I have a two year old who has only know this car and loves it still, but it's starting to get too small to be a family car. Still I've only had good things come from driving it. I hate to see it go. My only complaints are that it's hard to see the front of the car, because of the design, so you really have to get used to it and drive by instinct instead of sight. And the side panels are wide and create blind spots. But it's only caused me to be more careful.

I was excited when my wife and I bought her brand new VW New Beetle turbodiesel. I've never had a worse car in terms of mechanical failures. It had problems with the power windows, A/C, etc. I was unhappy every time it broke, including needing a new manual transmission with only 30,000 miles on it. Some of the cost was covered by warranty. I sold the car recently on eBay. Now I'm happy.

My car had a fair amount of miles on it when I purchased it so I assumed that maintenance would be a bit more expensive. Little did I know that everything on the car self-destructs at 50,000 miles. The interior is made entirely of plastic that breaks without notice (window switches, glove compartment, and arm rest compartment). Even the plastic brake light switches affiliated with the transmission release break (I've replaced FOUR in one year!)! Watch out for this car! It's been in the shop about once per month in the 14 months that I've owned it.

I would love this car if I could keep it out of the shop-the price of repairs could have afforded me a much more expensive car! I am getting out VW this year as they have refused to help. Other people I know have much better response from their cars and their manufacturers!! I see other people have the same citrus experience!

Nothing but problems since day 1...you can't have the sunroof open without cracking the windows because it creates this really annoying wierd noise. It eats oil like no other...had the engine replaced at 78K miles...Thank God for extended warranties because of all the crap that's gone wrong with it - O2 sensor, MAF sensor, drive belt, airbags, computer chips, headlamps ($65 each), wiper blades ($25 each), water pump, thermostat, coolant housing. My recommendation - DON'T BUY....well that's unless you're thinking of buying mine.

Given all of the problems we've had, I still like my car. The New Beetle is great to have around town ... great styling, easy to maneuver in crowded parking lots, reasonable power. The key problems we've had, however, are with the electrical system. We've had to replace a CD harness, ignition switch, side airbag harness, among other things. I'd get another Beetle, but definitely would keep my fingers crossed about the build quality.

This is the most unreliable car I have ever owned! If it could go bad or break it has. I first bought a 1998 New Beetle because of the looks, it had so many problems I got rid of it within one year. I figured that by the 2000 year models, they would have the bugs worked out, WRONG. Same problems as the 1998 model plus some. I can't believe it, what a piece of junk. It is so unreliable I will not let my wife drive it, I am afraid she would get stuck out somewhere. The dealer and VW of America are NO help. Never, Never again, no more V.W.'s for me!!

I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THE BEETLE. THE OXYGEN SENSORS, REAR BRAKES, WIPERS, DOOR LOCKS,BATTERY, ALL WERE A PROBLEM BEFORE THEIR TIME. THE DEALER HAS BEEN GREAT AND HELPED RESOLVE PROBLEMS, BUT FOR A NEWER CAR THEIR ARE WAY TO MANY PROBLEMS. I WILL BUY AN INFINTI NEXT, SOON....
