Preventative maintnance from dealership does NOT prevent big problems
The 2006 Jetta is certainly fun and comfortable to drive, but is just a big plastic peice of junk. Let's first start with the plastic bottom plate (covering the entire undercarrige of the engine). The only function I can see for this part is to deter you from changing you own oil (containing about 16 star screws).. This car has had all oil changes and inspections by dealer ON TIME.. At 63,000 miles, check engine light came on and a visit to the dealership came back with a $2000+ engine coolant system repair. $1030 for the fans and an additional $1000 for all wires, connectors, and sensors, $340 for CV boot (reportedly cracked and leaking) on front axil.
Typical German Engineering- Good and Bad
This is my daughter's car, and to be clear, we bought it used in 2012 (70k miles) for $6k, so I didn't and don't expect miracles. Drove great, like most good German vehicles, but in my opinion, just like my wife's Mercedes, there always seems to be funny noises in the engine randomly that turn out to be pricey repairs. By 90k miles: Replaced transmission ($3K) Water pump and tension pulleys $1500 Fuel pump Headliner came unglued, droops down in back seat Typical hazy headlights, we live in the country and the night time lighting is poor on this car. Spent $200 to get headlights re-glazed, that worked for almost a year, switched to high performance halogens, still poor visibility at night CV boots/ joint- $1k heat blanket (Inside engine on the hood) $300 Brakes 2X $800 each time. Sadly someone hit my daughter broad side, on the good side, she had no injuries, so the car did it's job protecting her!

Audi for VW price
This car is incredible. A true sleeper, the turbo motor responds well to simple mods (intake, downpipe, tune) but has plenty of power stock. The 6-spd is one of the best I've rowed thru. The interior just oozes luxury like a high-end Audi. The steering feel (and the wheel) is phenomenal. Brakes are great. The handling is the best- fling this family sedan into a corner and it will throw the apex into a headlock, it's incredible. Comes standard with all the luxury options but you can't option extra like phone Bluetooth, pwr seats, etc. Still an awesome deal and a true sleeper!
It’s not the German VW
Bought this 2.5 Jetta new over 32kCND in Canada in 2006. First class maintenance with VW dealer and paint looks like new. Most of the drive on Hwy and no drive on manual mode. The fact is the transmission slips at gear 3, 4 and then 2 at 192k km (120kmiles). It’ll cost too much to rebuild or replace the transmission (VW quoted over $6kCND +tax replace). I expected to run this VW 250-300k km but only 190k km. So, it’s almost no value now. It is a good looking small VW. Pro: Looks like very well made car even after 10 years. Con: Loudly drive, too much bumping on Hwy. Overall: cost, small, vibration

Turbo Jetta
I traded in a 2004 GTO for for a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0T and am not missing the GTO at all. The fuel economy is amazing (avg. 28 city / hwy), the performance isn't too far off the GTO and the insurance savings is great. The bi-xenon headlights are a must (pkg 2). The DSG auto is a little different when taking off from a stop, but the quick shifts make up for it. I have put 1,500 miles on mine so far and have no complaints.
