German Car with Some Problems

Overall, a good performing car but...... It seems to have a lot of mechanical/electrical problems. Have had for 65K miles and have enjoyed it. At the beginning, the interior got some sort of "cancer" whereas the membrane on the interior plastic would "peel off" leaving a nasty residue. VW knows all about this and claims the new cars don't have it. Otherwise, the same as I hear from other users. Windows fall down and don't go back up. "Check Engine" light on for no reason, and weird electrical problems. After car is off Extended Warranty, I plan to dump like a hot potato since repairs would be EXPENSIVE.

Can't afford to drive it

This car has got a beautiful interior, nice looking, body not rusting, but my wife and I are scared to take it anywhere. It sometimes starts and sometimes not. The mechanics can't find the problem, this gets expensive. All repairs on it are expensive. I'm a 200 lb man and not much room for me. I have a sore back and this car is very uncomfortable. My old beat up Dodge van is fine. I'd never buy another VW. It's not dependable. We have put so many repairs in it already. I will ride my Harley any day, much more reliable

My 2nd Review, 3 years later

I did my first review in 2002, ony had a few problems. After replacing my MAF (they are cheap in price, because VW recognized they are a faulty part), had my O2 sensor replaced under recall, I had to get my temp sensor replaced. Now, with 64k, it seems to be pretty reliable, still waiting for my windows to fall, luckily they haven't, those would be covered under warranty also. It burns oil like there is no tomorrow, but overall, it seems that the replacement parts are more reliable. I have a VW mechanic as a friend and he says that the new sensors that get put in hardly ever come back. Hopefully that is the case, other than that, it is still an attractive, and maybe now a reliable car.

Electronic hell

The "master computer brain" died and the car refused to start. Part had to be flown in. Then an air flow sensor malfunctioned and required replacing. Now there's another sensor malfuntion that my dealership told me to ignore. I guess they're designed not to work.

I've had various minor problems...The check engine light (which they discovered a faulty emmissions sensor). However its the minor things that plague my car. The front panels located below the headlights have disappeared, the cup holder, the arm rest and glove compartment broke. I did purchase the extended warrinty with Auto guard and everything was paid for. The only thing I had to pay for was new brakes.
