As a midsize pickup, the 2025 Toyota Tacoma is the smallest truck in the carmaker's lineup, slotting under the full-size Tundra. It comes off its first full redesign in a very long time. As the overhauled Tacoma enters its second year, we don't expect much to change. It should continue to come in a wide variety of configurations and trims to suit different needs and budgets. Off-road capability is a particular focus for this latest Tacoma, with the TRD PreRunner, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter trims all being tailored to specific kinds of terrain.
Full-size trucks have gotten huge in the last decade, far exceeding what many truck shoppers need. The Tacoma scales things back to a more manageable size, making it not just easier to drive but also more economical. Meanwhile, it still has plenty of capabilities for work or play, and the engines introduced for 2024 seriously increase the Tacoma's reach. The base turbocharged four-cylinder and the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain produce significantly more power than the outdated engines from the last generation and are more fuel-efficient.
Toyota isn't the only manufacturer that's making a big return to the midsize truck class. Its chief rivals are just as new, including the recently redesigned Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and Ford Ranger. If off-roading is your goal, the Jeep Gladiator is an excellent alternative as well. Read our test team's Expert Rating to see how the Toyota Tacoma stands out in a competitive field.
Toyota hasn't released official information on the 2025 Tacoma as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's Tacoma we suggest going with the TRD Sport. It offers a good mix of on-road comfort, off-road capability and features for a reasonable price. It's only available as a crew cab with four-wheel drive, but you can get a short or long bed as well as the option for a manual transmission.
[Editor's note: The following unofficial information is based on last year's Tacoma. We expect the 2025 model will have a similar lineup and we'll update this section once we have complete information.] The Toyota Tacoma is a midsize pickup available in either a two-seat, two-door extended cab (XtraCab) with generous storage behind the seats or a five-passenger, four-door crew cab (Double Cab). The extended cab comes with a 6-foot bed, while the crew cab offers a choice of a 5- or 6-foot bed. From there, Toyota offers the Tacoma in eight trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro and Trailhunter. Keep reading for our breakdown of the Tacoma's powertrains and standard and optional features.
The base SR base trim comes with a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine that produces 228 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. It comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive with low-range gearing is available.
Most of the Tacoma's other trims come with a more powerful version of this engine. It generates 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque when paired with the eight-speed automatic. Power drops slightly to 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque when paired with the available six-speed manual transmission.
Topping the engine lineup is a hybrid powertrain that Toyota calls i-Force Max. It pairs the turbocharged engine with a hybrid battery pack and an electric motor to increase output to a lofty 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. It's optional for the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited trims and standard on the TRD Pro and Trailhunter.
