To set the record straight , I have owned 5 Tacomas. One was away back in the 70s , but the modern Tacomas were 2009 , 2012 ,2015, 2016. I found the first 3 to be all pretty much the same, except as the years progressed the electronics became better with each truck. The gas mileage on each truck was almost identical for the first 3 modern trucks combined 16.5 mpg. I never reached 20 mpgon any of them , city or highway. Thewinter months the mileage went down to 14-15 mph combined. I have owned 11 trucks in my life . Of them,6 American trucks , all needed to have work done under warranty( as much as $3000 worth ) . None of the Tacomas have needed anything done under warranty ( not counting a replacement for bad weather mats). The 2016 is great . A lot of people have criticized the engine for being sluggish and the transmission constantly shifting. compared to the 2015 , that is true, but I have realizedthat my mileage is almost 25% better with the newer 3.5 engine and 6 speed transmission. I am getting and average combined mileage of 21mpg, reached an alltime high of 24.7 on a trip last week. If I want better performance I use the 6 speed manual shift and it feels like a sports car, but use the 6 speed automatic for mileage . I have noticed that the truck has plenty of get up and go when you jump on it going 65 mph and wanting to pass. it gets up to 85 very quickly. As I mentioned before the electronics have developed as the models progressed. The JBL sound system in my Sport model is crazy good. Loud but clear. The new backup alert has saved me several times from backing into someone or something. Same can be said for the alerts in the mirrors when a car is beside you in your blind spot. I love the style of the new truck and the beefy look it has . I get compliments all the time on the appearance of the truck. With all the combined factors , I think I have the best truck of all the Tacomas. Maybe I am just lucky with the mileage, but the rest of the features make it a pleasure to drive. 10/14/17. I now have 21,000 miles and still love the truck. Mileage has remained about the same. Happy about my purchase 4/16/2018 I have had the truck for over 1 1/2 years .. I did take it in for a technical service concerning the shifting ( or lack there of ) at freeway speeds going up large grades. The truck would drop down into 4-5 gear and almost redline before shifting into 6th gear. I took it in under warranty and the problem was fixed with a computer adjustment. The mileage has stayed about the same but winter driving is at 15-17 mpg, but that is in large part due to a remote start and letting the truck warm up in cold weather. I still love this truck and hope to have it for many years. I am now at 28,000 miles 04/17/2020 I now have 58,000 miles on my truck. I still love the truck at this point. I have taken it in for a frame rust check under a service bulletin. No problems so far. My mileage has gone down some but it is due to putting on A/T. tires for winter driving. I have had no real mechanical problems with the vehicle since purchase.. I am hoping to keep this truck til I croak. Time will tell if that happens Update. April 2021. I still think the truck is great. I now have 68,000 miles and have had no real mechanical problems, just routine maintenance. Mileage has gone down slightly ,but that is due to running Lt truck all-terrain tires for 6 months of the year. I still get compliments all the time from strangers about how much they like the truck. See no reason to get rid of it any time soon 4/19 2022 My mileage is now 89,000 miles. I recently had to buy a new battery which lasted almost 80,000 miles and 5 1/2 years.. Also it finally needed new tires for summer travel. The originals lasted almost 65,000 miles. Very happy with tire and battery longevity. I had an alignment with the new tires and it drives like a new truck again. I am thinking about putting on new shocks ,struts this summer, as well as tuneup and coolant change. I really have not had any unexpected repairs for the past 5 1/2 years. It is nice to have no payments for the last year. Now I can catch up on normal routine things. How do I feel about the truck now. I still like it alot. I am not use to having a truck this long. I would put so many miles on them in 5 years that I would trade them in. I still may in a year or 2 and buy a new hybrid if they are within reason. I am more than satisfied with this truck. Very dependable. Will see what next year brings 10/20/2023 The truck now has 111,000 miles. At 100,000 ,I changed plugs, flushed and filled antifreeze, and put on Rancho 3" lift kits on front and back. They are adjustable for heavy loads or light. Very comfortable ride. I still change out winter and summer tires every 6 months. Mileage is averaging 19.8 in summer and 16.5 in winter. I haven't had any major problems with the truck that weren't normal wear and tear. I think someone backed into me in a parking lot, so I need to have my rear mirrors and backup sensors adjusted. Not cheap but required to be able to use. I am thinking about switching to a smaller truck at my age of 71. I may look into the new Stout that is suppose to come out in 2024. I could get use to 45mpg in their hybrid. I have to actually sit in one to see if my 6'2" fat ass frame could fit into it comfortable. If that does not happen ,I am still very happy with no car payments and my current truck. 4/23/2024 I am now at 117,000 miles. The truck is running great and have had no big unexpected problems arise. That is why I bought my Tacomas. I recently had my first tuneup and added performance chip to the truck and I noticed a better response in the pickup of the engine.. This truck is still turning heads everywhere I go . I have had more compliments on this truck than any of the previous models. Then again , I have had this truck longer than any of the others. I keep doing little cosmetic thigs to make it look a little different , so I don't get tired of the look Since I swap out radials and A/T tires in fall and spring, I set the trip mileage at each time . I now get 17.2 in winter and 19.8 during the summer. Those are numbers I can live with. Still thinking about the Stout in the future, but not sure if I can get by with no 4 wheel drive and a 4ft bed, during the fall hunting months I still like this truck a lot, and I am certainly glad for it's dependability. may be time for new seat covers, and front seat lifters for added comfort driving , as recommended by other drivers. Getting to be over 70 , I am thinking about installing some running boards in the near future , just to make getting in and out of the truck after the lift kit, a little easier

I have always wanted a Tacoma, well my dream finally came true. I had a Ford F-150 that ended up getting totaled. I bought a new 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport 4 door short bed. I read as many reviews as I could find on them. I had a few misconceptions in the back of my mind when I went to drive one. The one complaint was the transmission shifting too much when you climb a hill, etc. I do notice it downshifting if it's in 6th gear or something, but it's nothing that really bothers me. If you need too, give it some more gas. Someone mentioned the seat being too low. I am 5'9" and it is not too low for me. Maybe it's low to the floor, but if it was any higher, I would be in the roof. I am slowly getting use to the technology in these new vehicles, it's pretty amazing. My F-150 was a 2006 and I thought it was fancy. I do have a tad of a problem getting in and out of it. I put nerf bars on it, but if I step up on them, then I have to squat way down to get under the steering wheel. If I don't use them then it can be a fairly high step, but I'm working on it. It rides nice and seems pretty stiff. It is a 4X4 and I like the way it rides. I have a 800 lb Polaris 600 4 wheeler. It fit in the back of the truck with the tailgate down, no problem. It had no power issues hauling it around. I think it has good power and acceleration. As mentioned in my title, this is my first Tacoma and so far I really like it. It is taking a little getting use to since I downsized from a full size truck. Mine has a wireless phone charger. I have a Samsung S6 with wireless capability. There appears to be a problem with either this system or my phone. It charges then cuts out, then charges more. My wife put her Note 5 on the charger and it had no problems. I will keep playing with it before I take it back to the dealer. I am just trying to give people an honest opinion on this new truck from an owners perspective. It only has about 550 miles on it, but I like it more and more each time I drive it. Well, this is my 1 year 10,000 mile update. I have gotten use to my truck and even like it more. I am happy with my selection and pleased with it's performance. I look forward driving it every time I get in it. I'm getting about 17 mpg. I can 20 if I'm on a trip and probably 17 around town. The ECT button is a help if you don't want it to change gears as often. I am very pleased with with my purchase and look forward to many years of dependability from Toyota!

An Honest Review From A New Tacoma Owner

Let me start off this review by saying that I have never owned a Tacoma before or a truck. Also I have had my Tacoma for about 10 weeks now. I felt it was necessary to write a review to defend this truck. This is a great truck and I would recommend it, but lease it till they work out the bugs. First off, I'll start off with one of probably the most important questions, the mpg. I average around 20 mpg, doing about 60% city, 40% highway. If you do a lot of highway driving, my mpg meter has gone as high as 26mpg, as long as you don't drive like a jerk, you should get decent mileage. But when you buy a truck you're not buying it for the mpg, you buy it for versatility, otherwise go buy a Prius. Moving onto performance and ride quality. In terms of performance, I will admit acceleration can be a bit sluggish, especially when you need it. However, I find that if you turn the ect pwr button on or put it in sport mode, that does seem to loosen up the transmission a bit for better acceleration. It's no race car, but it still has ample passing power. In terms of ride quality, it's relatively smooth, but when going over bumps it gets pretty rough, so ride quality is so-so. And to add to that steering is pretty responsive. In terms of the interior, I love it, it's very simplistic but very nice and clean layout. I have cloth seats and they're very comfy, and the infotainment center's touchscreen is very responsive and user friendly. In terms of sound system, I had heard Toyota speakers were garbage, but to be honest they're actually pretty decent. Certain genres of music can be on the quieter side and require you to really crank it up. But overall, for the non-jbl's they still have pretty decent bass. Last but not least, I'd just like to add that, the backup camera makes parking the Tacoma even easier, as it's nimble size makes it easier to get through tight spaces. The design is definitely a big improvement in my opinion. Overall I give it 4 stars, it's a great truck, but still has its short comings, hopefully when my lease is up they'll make more improvements on the little things. Hope this review helped any future buyers!

Vibration Nation

The engine is weak compared to the 2nd Generation Tacoma. The transmission shifts erratically, even after the electronic transmission "learns" your driving behaviors. I'm averaging 17 MPG gas mileage, despite the 18-20 MPG advertisement. Worst, the 2016 is plagued by several vibration problems. First, a driveline vibration/shudder on acceleration. This was a vexing problem with the the Tacoma since 2005. And Toyota's Chief Engineer Mike Sweers claims they completely eliminated this problem in the 2016. Nope. It's still there. Now add to the 2016 a strong buzzing vibration that transmits through the steering wheel and gas pedal on acceleration. This wasn't there on previous Tacomas I've owned before 2016. The buzzing traverses through your skin and clothes (not hyperbole). It's annoying on street driving; but it's downright ridiculous and dangerous on highway driving, when you're exposed to it for long periods. Toyota's response to all of this has officially been "these are normal and characteristic; we're sorry you don't like it." So, they intentionally designed vibrations into the truck. Don't be fooled by the "it's a truck" excuse. I've owned many trucks, including Tacomas, and a normal truck doesn't do this. Period. Overall, very disappointing.

Great vehicle for a love/hate relationship

Scott, Atlanta, GA, 04/11/2018

I waited 18 months before reviewing my 2016 Tacoma to be totally fair. First, the good: It has a great design, a little more aggressive looking than the gen 2 (I was a gen 2 owner for 7 years). The interior is laid out much better, it needed an update badly. The same tight, truck ride is is still there which is a plus for me. "Car" seat position which I don't like but I was prepared for that. I have the off-road which has added many 4x4 extra goodies including "crawl" and various traction options based on terrain. Off-road capabilities and clearance are still top-notch. I particularly love the newer sport shifting mode with the automatic....and you're going to need it, because... The bad: The engine, oh, the engine. Why the engineers decided on this anemic 3.5 Atkinson cycle engine is beyond me. The old 4.0 liter was vastly better. This thing upshifts too quickly only to immediately downshift again at the slightest grade. To avoid it, you have to use sport mode, the ECT button, or drive it HARD, or a combination of all 3. So, any gain in mileage is immediately lost. Plus, when the engine switches from Atkinson cycle to Otto (normal) cycle, it feels like a "shift" but it's not the transmission. So it can feel like you have 12 gears and not 6. If you are at all sensitive to power bands, this truck will drive you nuts. I've learned, reluctantly, to live with it. Really drive this thing before you buy it. My other gripe is a come-and-go buzz in my left front tweeter. They'll never find it without ripping the entire dash apart, so, again, I live with it. Lastly....drum brakes in the rear, still?? Toyota claims it's a better off-road choice. I call BS. Bottom line, a great truck but not without some pretty major quirks. Choose wisely.
