Prius forever
I took delivery of my 2004 Prius, package 7, in April and continue to be amazed with the mileage I can squeeze out of each tank. My best so far has been 524 miles averaging 59 mpg. To get the best efficiency out of the hybrid engine you definitely need to change your driving habits and allow the car to coast by easing off the throttle. The ride is exceptional especially when it kicks into electric mode, eerily quiet. I still look forward to each drive and only wished I had ordered the NAV system.
Practical but Pedestrian
A bit unstable, but low drag and a fairly quiet ride. Even minor acceleration elicits a strained whine from the engine. Real world driving won't get claimed mpg (I get 40-45). Fine interior overall. The seat comfort is fair, front visibility excellent, rear visibility poor with severe blind spots. The "dashboard" strip beneath the windshield is great (reflects on windshield though). The center-mounted display screen is in theory a good idea, but boring and annoying as configured. The interior room is very good, and trunk space is fair. The finish of the car isn't bad for a car in this price range. It is a practical car, but not very fun to drive.

Like this car, but have had problems
I was one of first in my area to purchase this model. For the first 18 months it was a great car, although the display needed to be replaced. Then it broke down on me (computer failure) at 18 months (15,000 miles). The computer was replaced, and immediately my MPG went down significantly. My 54 MPG highway went to 44 MPG highway for the same route (same seasonal temperature). My local MPG went from 41 to 35 MPG. Dealer thought the software recall/upgrade would help but it has not. Others seem to report this problem. Dealer has not offered any solutions. Aside from these problems, I have enjoyed this car, but I want my great MPG back!
60,000 miles and going strong
The car is a technological marvel in a very practical package. Bought new, it's been very reliable for 60,000 miles. It's no sports car, but is faster than it seems because the CVT is so smooth that your speed builds without your noticing it. Lifetime avg. 49.9 mpg driving smoothly, 53 mpg at steady 65, with or without the AC running. Not quite so comfortable or quiet as our old Camry, but still very good. Build quality is very impressive. No problems to date. Definitely the best car I've ever owned. Love the hatchback layout. There's lots of room, but the rear seat is too narrow for three across unless one is a child.
Number 1!
For the price, the Prius buyer gets the most value for almost any car sold. The build quality is outstanding; there is not a flaw on the vehicle. Aside from that, everyone wants to know what the car is and they want to drive it. I'm hoping to get a good 15- 20 years out of it. (No, the battery doesn't explode at 8 years or 100,000 miles because the warranty ends.) Like Toyota's chief Prius engineer said, "this is not just a great environmental car; this is great car, period."
