I got the car in late 2003 brand new. If you keep up with oil changes and tire rotations you'll be able to drive it forever. It's got well over 100,000 miles on it and I've never had a problem with it unless you refer to a headlight bulb and battery I had to change almost 5 years later, other than that, no complaints.

Breaking in car - new discoveries

Bought Matrix new. Have 21,000 mi on car today. Mostly city driving with occasional road trip. Beginning to see minor degradation on interior moving parts - the "cheap" is revealing itself. Out-of-control acceleration happened to me 2 times. The accelerator just slams to the floorboard and won't let up. The first time in 70+ mph traffic - the second time 45+ traffic. Terrified me. Panic! Had to yank emergency handle and turn car off. It is a real experience and the dealer can't explain. I think it's a defective chip in the master brain of some cars.

210k miles, and no major problems. Catalytic converter went bad at around 140k. Other than that, I've only spent on tires, brake pads, and regular oil changes.

I love this car. I wish Toyota had not stopped making this model, as I would definitely buy another one. The only repairs have been normal upkeep, batteries, tires, wind shield wipers, and lights. No big problems. Excellent heater and air conditioner. The only thing I have been unhappy with are the Toyota recalls. The last recall was for something to do with the air bags. I took it in last year and had this repair done. This year I received the same recall letter stating that last year Toyota had replaced the recalled part with the exact same part. They have to replace it with a part made by a different company. I think that Toyota should have been able to figure this out in less than 2 years.

Great hauler/commuter

I got the matrix certified used in 2008, and never had any problems with it. I'm at 90,300 miles and it still runs great. It has great cargo capacity for home improvement projects. I've hauled anything from a 55" led TV in the box, to 600 lbs of ceramic tile, and it works like a champ. Good acceleration, good gas mileage. Like others, I have a tiny complaint about the small compartment under the shifter not staying shut, but other than that and some random rattling at times, it has been wonderful. We also have a 2004 corolla, and have experienced nothing but the best quality from Toyota. We're happy Toyota customers, who will be grabbing the 2014 Highlander as soon as it shows up.
