New to the Corolla Line

2016 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl CVT)

For my age, in the lower 60s, this is a nice conservative looking car. I'm new to the Corolla line and for years I've admired the new look. I bought one. I like everything about this car except for the stock tires. TireRack rated these low rolling resistance stock tires as one of the lowest in ride quality and it feels like it, i.e. some road noise. However when these tires wear out, I'm looking to buy some premium low rolling resistance tires that will make everything about this car top notch. As a scientist, I'm just looking to go from point A to point B with affordability, reliability and best fuel economy in mind.

Not the new civic.

2016 Toyota Corolla S Plus 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl 6M)

Got an incredible deal. Absent the deal, I'd have gone with the civic. Got the S PLUS for about 3000$ less than the civic lx. The corolla is exactly what is expected. Nothing more, nothing less. Acceleration is horrible. Noticeable difference from my old 14' civic. Night and day from the new civic. Handling is actually very tight and smooth. The cabin is quiet. Having that extra gear (6) is nice. Makes highway travel less noisy, and obviously more efficient. Will not get up many hills in 6th, but then again neither does my automatic v6 van without downshifting. First few days of driving yielded about 35-36 mpg in mixed Hwy/city. (35lbs in tires) Definitely not pushing it yet. I find the seats comfortable, unlike some of the other reviews. I am 6'5". ???? I've always driven the base model civic, so all the bells and whistles are fun to have... I guess. I'm sure I'll learn to appreciate them. Only problem I have with the car is the lack of power. It is slow! Pretty sure I can beat the car on foot the first 10-20 feet! Update After 3 yrs. 165k miles. No problems at all. Just oil changes. Tires. And brakes. Incredibly reliable car. Did develop lower back issues due to lack of lumbar support. Easy fix with a 10 $ cushion. Toyota makes a great product. Wanted a new corolla but the market was too much higher than the civic. So back to the civic. For now.

This Corolla S Really Hugs the Road...

2016 Toyota Corolla S Premium 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl CVT)

It was a choice between the S Premium and the LE Premium but I knew I wanted a Corolla! I've been driving Corollas since 1992 and it has been my favorite model of all the Toyota cars. I also owned a Camry XLE for the last four years but didn't like how it handled in the New England winter weather; too much car with not enough traction control. If you want a more cushioned ride, go for the LE model; but if you want to feel the road and have more control of the handling, go for the S model. I chose the S Premium because I wanted to upgrade to the luxury of heated SofTex seats, moonroof and an awesome Entune Audio System with Hands-free Phone capability.

impressions after 2k miles

Pro's: Good fuel economy though very speed, acceleration and wind sensitive. Features and reliability reputation are great for the price. Seat height adjustment very useful for short/tall driver transition. Con's: LED headlights on low beam are cut off by "eyelids" which can limit how far they illuminate ahead in hilly terrain. Steering requires frequent tweaks with stiff crosswind. Entune system setup/use with iPhone not as obvious as it should be.

It does it's purpose very well

This car does EXACTLY what it designed to do...that's to be economical. After 1000 miles.. we learned that being great on gas is all it's good for. Do' not expect great comfort in log trips.. 2.5 hours is about tops for seating comfort.. anything longer than that.. you need to upgrade to something with more bolstered seats. The driving performance is par for a 4cyl Eco-saver. But the steering is surprisingly tight, and handles the corners quite gracefully. Speed above 85mph you will notice air starting to get under the car and the feel of the car sticking to the road starts to fade. Around town driving places this car at the top of the list for sipping on fuel. But, please know you must have patience while in traffic...for this car will NOT jet you in and out of traffic because of sloth-like acceleration. And please, please avoid road rage.. because the horn sounds like a fisher-price toy horn.. so don't embarrass yourself by honking and giving off explicit excerpts. In all the wifey enjoyed it's fuel conservation.. and the daughters liked it's cute style and practicality. It's a great car for city life, and a great car for the child..IF they travel less than 1hour...
