2021 Camry XSE 4cyl. Acceleration

Geoff, 06/26/2021

For some odd reason, I notice that the new XSE 4cyl. Engine is very sluggish from the start, and first gear sounds like it’s slipping before it goes into second gear. I had a 2018 SE that seemed much more responsive, when I gave more gas from the start!! Car is brand new, so I know their isn’t any mechanical problems with it, but just was wondering if anyone else has seen a difference?

Toyota penny pinching on safety features

Just replaced my 2018 Camry XSE with the newer 2021 Camry XSE. To my deep disappointment could not find Toyota Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) on a new car, although it was a standard equipment on a previous one. This safety feature was extremely helpful in tight spaces, especially when parking backwards or against the wall. Now it is a part of an expensive additional package that many people don't really need. Shame on Toyota for penny pinching on previously standard safety features.

GORGEOUS car!

I've massively upgraded from a '96 Avalon with this car. There's so many features that I'm learning about and didn't realize the car tech had came such a LONG way that it astounds me! Well beyond WORTH the purchase!

Some glaring issues that Toyota needs to correct

I’ve had my Camry for over a year and so far I’ve logged 15.5k miles on it. I’m just going to list some pros and cons. Pros -The fuel mileage is excellent. Sometimes the trip mileage on the highway is near 40mpg and there are rare times when I can get over 40mpg. -Very good acceleration, especially up hills. -Naturally aspirated engine. People who keep their cars for a long time can appreciate this. Gasoline Turbos can sometimes lead to other engine problems…. See Ford for details. -Passengers say the interior is comfortable and suitable for long trips. -The Radar Cruise Control is decent…. Not perfect, but okay as long as the traffic keeps moving. -LE model has a soft suspension. The Camry handles okay. -I’ve had no mechanical issues so far. Cons -The Radar Cruise control will cancel out when the traffic slows down between 18mph to 20mph. Toyota needs to implement a slow speed follow for rush hour traffic situations. -The fenders and quarter panels are almost pop can thin. I already have a few dings on my doors thanks to careless neighbors. -The paint is paper thin and scratches easily. I would recommend getting a Camry that has a color like Gun-Metal grey that doesn’t show off paint problems. -The transmission is mostly smooth but sometimes it fumbles between gears, doesn’t shift into the correct gear right away, and other times it downshifts or upshifts an extra gear too far. The transmission is tolerable but it needs work. -The drivers seat is awful. I have to use a wedge type seat cushion because the bucket seat setup is at too much of an angle, even if I set it as flat as can be. -The driver’s side blind spot is hard to see. -Fuel Economy decreases of the Cabin air is set too high or if you go past 65mph. You should still get 32-34mpg if you have the air on full blast and you’re driving at 75mph. You’ll see fuel mileage at its best if the air is off and you’re driving at 60-65mph. -The 10k oil change is ridiculous. I change my oil before 5k, even if I have to do it myself. Some people claim Blackstone labs this and that, but I’m sure the oil in a broken down Ford F-150 with the 5.4l 3v Triton will pass the Blackstone lab test with flying colors. The fact is some engines don’t handle a little bit of dirt in the oil too well, and I’m not going to push my luck with the untested A25A engine that uses light oil. The A25A engine uses low-tension rings, which are more prone to gumming up with dirty oil. This can lead to oil consumption and in the worst case cylinder wall wear. The A25A engine is a lot more complex and more expensive to fix than it’s predecessor the 2AR engine. Oil is cheap and shops aren’t scamming you because they don’t make that much money off oil changes. -Cheap Bridgestone Ecopia tires. I had these on another car and they don’t handle too well and they’re prone to going flat after 20k.

2021 Camry TRD vs Q50 Red Sport 400

Jason R, 02/15/2021
2021 Toyota Camry TRD 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl 8A)

I had a 400hp Infiniti Q50 for 3 years and loved the performance of it. However, I recently bought the 2021 Camry TRD and I love it. It handles like a go-kart and has amazing technology. I would NOT trade my TRD for another brand new Infiniti Q50 (even my beloved Red Sport 400).
