Used 2023 Toyota bZ4X SUV Consumer Reviews
Smooth and Quiet, Toyota Familiarity, Poor Value
I own the 2023 Toyota BZ4X Limited FWD for more than two years now. I have mixed feelings about my BZ4X. It's my first and only EV I have ever owned. I'll start with the positives. I like how smooth and effortless power delivery is. It's easy to merge into traffic. I also like how the controls are very familiar for anyone who's owned Toyotas for a long time. If you drove Toyotas for many years, you can hop into a BZ4X and figure it out almost instantly. I've been getting around 4.0+ miles per KWh most of the time which is really good. Sometimes, I even get above 5.0 miles per KWh. I'm glad to say that after more than 2 years, I didn't have a single issue come up. The car works like clockwork just like any other Toyotas I have ever owned or at least driven. There are negatives too however. The problem in general is lack of value for money for the Limited trim I got. I'm noticing too many cases of cost cutting. There's too much hard plastics and overuse of piano black on the center console. It's also ironic that Toyota chose to go crazy with the two toned exterior including the wheel cladding, but the interior is so bland. Did Toyota get their B design teams to work on the interior and exterior designs? The horn sounds like that from the Corolla's. Features like power folding mirrors, front passenger power seat, and memory seats are also missing. Mine's even only has front door smart key unlocking / locking. The BZ4X also needs a rear window wiper and washer. Toyota's infotainment system and app is still buggy and very unpolished but that's got to be across the entire Toyota / Lexus lineup. Toyota really desperately needs to get more engineering talent onboard to improve their infotainment system and app. Basically.... I should not have to put up with all these shortcomings at $50K on the Limited trim with many of the options added. Toyota is either needs to put in some more luxury or they need to lower the MSRP at this high of a price point. Is 200 hp good enough? Yes, 99% of the time it's more than plenty for regular driving. No, if your goal is to race other EVs. In fact, I'm driving with ECO now. It's crazy how my BZ4X is eating up the tires already. I'm already easing off the "go pedal" to save my tires. The only time I feel wanting more is if I'm trying to do high speed passes quickly. The instant torque and smooth acceleration is already huge step up coming from a gas car. Is the charging fast enough? Yes, if you charge at home overnight or at work. No, if you do road trips and need fast DC charging. I would not even take this on a road trip. 90% my driving is in town and I drive my BZ4X most of the time. At the time I updated to this review, I'm aware that the 2026 BZ is coming out. Looks like that will have lots of improvements. Hopefully, their MSRPs will be reasonable too.

first ev that looks like a regular gas suv
Update after 6 months and 14k . Still love my bz4x limited and wont trade it for any other car under 50k , electric or ice. Extremely comfortable, drives like a performance car and looks good. Range gives 230 without ac and 180 with on. Got used to living with that range, charge at work for free and installed chargepoint at my house just in case. Charge takes about 3 hours for 100 miles or so

Not for road tripping at all
The Bz4X AWD Limited is a nice car. It drives like I expect a Toyota to drive, and for daily commutes, it's great. This is a really good first EV for Toyota loyalists who need a good commuter car. However even if you accept 10-80% DC fast charging in an hour, after 2 cycles of charging that amount (about 110-120 kWh) in 24 hours, any further DC fast charging is throttled to level 2 charging speeds. This "feature" is intended to protect the battery's longevity, but it's not explicitly listed anywhere, and discovering it the hard way sucks. For people who never intend to drive more than 400-450 miles a day, and mostly just do shorter commutes, it's a nice car. Just hope to never need to drive further than that in an emergency, because it will be tortuous beyond that point.

Enjoyed Until Winter Hit the Range
The stylish exterior more pleasing than the dull Tesla appearance; and, the range certainly could benefit from the hyped numbers Tesla used for bringing in value. And, all has been reasonable until the available range kept dropping down a couple of miles after each L1 charge during cold weather. Still an excellent choice as my daughter’s daily commute and “dad” takes care of all the details. EV mindset adjustment is necessary in today’s world and Toyota quality is present, as expected, and a 10-year battery warranty is definitely a plus. All the Tesla models offer are a moving value point due to arbitrary price adjustments from the manufacturer lead; and, since 3 of those models are in top 10 categories for issues, much prefer to be inside the Toyota.

We love our BZ4X
Our BZ4X Limited FWD has one pedal driving aka Regenerative Braking. Not sure why this Edmonds review says it doesn’t. Anyway… We love the car. We drive it from Los Angeles to Lake Arrowhead and back with me, wife, two kids, a dog and a heavy load of luggage and large toolbox, on a full charge and return with 10% left. I installed a 240v charger at my house and it charges fast. Everything feels high quality. The JBL sound system sounds great. The lighting is fantastic. I personally love the futuristic looks. The sky roof is awesome. Feels like I’m driving a car from Robotech. This is my first EV. We didn’t want a Tesla… OH and it’s an easy car to wash and vacuum as well. An R2D2 thumbs up from me.

Not a road trip EV
The good.... it handles very well, better acceleration than most gas powered cars. Its reasonably quiet. I'm a toyota guy so the interior and electronics were a lot alike. The not so good... Charging at home, I get close to 7kW consistently. Fast charging, it seems Toyota has limited to 30kW so a full charge can take hours and hours. Range is the disappointment. I have the AWD Limited version and get 2.6-2.6 M/kWh or 160-170 miles range through the summer. I mostly do highway driving and have never been above 3 M/kWh. The other nit is lack of charge planning in the car itself. Finding a charger requires a phone or pad. I'm a bit concerned about what my winter range will be. I've got a 55 mile one way commute each day. Should still be ok unless its in the teens out. But still, I was expecting about twice the milage/range.

Absolutely love the Bz4x
Not sure why this car gets hated on it does everything it's suppose to . On a full charge I get around 370 kms . I picked up the Bz4x with the $9000 government grants bringing 5he car down to 45k . 5hat is not bad value people will say the Tesla model Y is better but the Model Y goes for 70k here in Canada . Overall the Bz4x is a great vehicle .

Never ICE again!
I purchased a BZ4X because of Toyota’s history of reliability and haven’t been disappointed. In the last 4 months covering 9000 miles it has performed admirably and only been in the shop for a tire rotation. I don’t think I can ever go back to an Internal Combustion Engine. The BZ4X is quick, clean, and quiet. I drive it to work every and plug it in when I get home. It charges overnight and is ready to go again the next morning thanks to a level 2 home charger. I say all of this as a true owner (5 months). I love it. Thanks Toyota!

electric car
I have been driving this car for a month and I am very satisfied with it, of course, I have only used it in the city and I have not tried it outside the city yet, but even though I have tried the Tesla car several times, I I am very happy and satisfied with buying this car. Very soft and comfortable car with many features.

Bz4x
SUV was quick off the line, and fun to drive. Other evs that go from 0-60 in 3-4 seconds are not practical and burn tires and wear components. Where do you need that type of acceleration in day to day driving and where do you go to do that except to the race track. The car is quiet, smooth, and home charging is great. Toyota is reliable and so far I would recommend this car To anyone. At least test drive it, you’ll see for yourself, and save a lot of money.
30% Less range in cold weather!
I live in Colorado and I've owned this vehicle now for 3 months. When the temperature dropped to 25 degrees, I received 30% less range/miles on a 100% charge! This is something that Toyota and their dealerships are not being honest and upfront about which is extremely upsetting. I am currently in the buy-back process with Toyota as I will not accept a vehicle that does not perform as promised. The vehicle is supposed to provide 228 miles of range on a full charge at 100%.

Very Dissapointed
The BZ looks very cool and handles well. Acceleration was crisp and braking was solid. The screen is very nice size. We have had several Rav4s and the BZ4X cannot even come close to the quality of our current RAV4. They made everything as thin as possible to cut weight, even the door handles feel cheap. Closing the doors sound cheap and the seats are thinner that our current car. Range is very low for a vehicle that size. The ride was stiff and a lot of road noise. The unit we drove was a Limited, but the interior was very lackluster, nothing special at all. After our test drive we felt our Rav was a much more substantial vehicle and would not consider buying or recommending the BZ.

Don’t Purchase (if I could give no stars I would)
Charge time is triple to 4x advertised time frame (manufacturer “advertised is ideal conditions” & “read the fine print”) Range - apparently after spending all this money on a vehicle the expectation is you can’t use any options I.e. heat, AC. Radio etc. It was a nightmare with this car for the year I had it and best part the minute you drive off the lot you lose half of the money you paid for it. So disappointed in the dealership and more importantly the manufacturer

The bz4x in my opinion is toyota's biggest mistake
The car is a complete failure, with its low mileage range, bad charging ports, and slow chargers. Driving at high speeds on highways will decrease mileage very quickly.

Don’t do it
First run for this car, needs to evolve, it’s clunky with apparently cheaper battery set up
The best car
So far i love everything on this car

Not a car that you will love
Many cost conscious material was used, missing new technology, charging problems, and overall cheap craftsmanship.

Not happy to own one
Bz4X is a beautiful car, drives well but it's really not for long trip or highway at all if you have to drive more than 65 mph your battery starts draining faster than you would expect it's not as convenient according to the manufacturers it doesn't charge as fast as it should it does create more problem just by keeping the car My suggestion don't even go near busy for x not worth it of the price does vehicle maybe 12 to 15,000 the max Toyota need to re-look into it and recall all the vehicle and pay the owners double to make it up for that mistake what they have done.
