More in common with a Lexus than Toyota

It's a Lexus, minus the "L" on the front -- which drops the price by at least $10K. It's a joy to drive, the gas mileage is fantastic for a car of this size, and this car can GO. I have to be careful when driving because it's very easy to push it past 90 on the highway without even thinking about it -- the ride is that smooth. This is a car that will never annoy you.

Great Car

We just returned from a round trip from Kentucky to Sun City, Az. The car was loaded heavily for our three month stay. The overall mileage going and coming was 29.96 mpg. We have been Lincoln Town Car owners for years and the seats of the Avalon fit our bodies better than the Lincolns.

Concerns about quality

We have owned two Avalons previously and liked them a great deal. The 2006 XL we purchased gives us some concern. The transmission hesitation when you want the car to move quickly is a real problem. In addition, after backing out from a parked postion and then moving forward there is a low rumble in the rear. Other than this, we like the quietness in the interior, roominess, and looks, especially with silver pine mica.

This is my second Avalon, the first was 2000. I assumed this year's model would offer the same high quality performance as the 2000 model. Wrong! The transmission seems to shift very harshly and often. The wind noise is excessive and the engine noise sounds like that of a much cheaper auto. The leather used on the interior seems of a lesser quality vs the 2000 model.

Now have 6K miles on it, but battery failed at 1500 miles leaving me stranded (that's why the low reliability score). Outside of that I am very satisfied with the car. Only complaint is that the car has HID headlights but only on low beam, and high beam is very poor. My previous car was Nissan Maxima (04) which had terrific HID lights and it spoiled me.
