The Gran Coupe is the four-door variant of the BMW 4 Series, and it's set to get a small update ahead of its two-door coupe and convertible counterparts. Visual changes include a slightly tweaked grille design, though there's still no missing those enlarged kidneys. Around back, the 4 Series Gran Coupe's taillights have the Laserlight signature BMW recently used on the M4 CSL coupe.

Overview
The Gran Coupe is the four-door variant of the BMW 4 Series, for those who want the engaging driving dynamics of a coupe but the practicality of a four-door sedan. The 4 Series is a little larger than the BMW 3 Series, and while the back seat is a bit cramped, its hatchback design allows you to stow large items in the trunk. You can also fold down the back seats to create an impressive cargo area. The 2025 4 Series Gran Coupe gets an update ahead of its two-door coupe and convertible counterparts, with tweaks to its drivetrains, exterior styling and infotainment system. Read our full Expert Rating to see if the 4 Series Gran Coupe is right for you.

Edmunds spotlight: What's new for the 2025 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe?
There are a handful of small changes inside and outside the Gran Coupe, starting with the powertrains. Both the 2.0-liter turbo-four in the 430i and the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six in the M440i have added a new 48-volt hybrid system. That boosts the M440i's output to 386 horsepower, while the 430i stays at 255 hp. Visual changes include a slightly tweaked grille design and new Laserlight taillights. The Gran Coupe's infotainment system gets the latest iDrive software (8.5), which has a steep learning curve but is packed with new features.
Competitors to consider
The Audi A5 Sportback (and sportier S5 Sportback) is a four-door luxury hatchback that's similar in concept to the 4 Series Gran Coupe and worth checking out. Otherwise, you'll likely end up cross-shopping against traditional luxury sedans such as the Acura TLX, BMW 3 Series, Genesis G70, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Check out our test team's Expert Rating below for our complete test of the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8/10
How does the 4 Series Gran Coupe drive? We tested the 430i version, which is the base version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe. At our test track, it sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, which is an average time for a small luxury car with a base engine. For more fun and personality, you should definitely get the six-cylinder engine. Otherwise, the transmission shifts smoothly and quickly, and pulling away from stops and driving at low speed is comfortable and easy. Around turns, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is stable and secure. Emergency braking power is also impressive, but the brakes are grabby at low speeds and require a delicate foot to slow smoothly.
Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the 4 Series Gran Coupe? Despite looking like a low-slung sport sedan, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is surprisingly comfortable. The optional adaptive suspension dampers help the car ride comfortably in all drive modes, especially Comfort mode. It's also quiet and does a commendable job of insulating passengers from the outside world. The seats have firm padding, suggesting the seats will require a lengthy break-in period before they become truly comfortable, but multiple adjustments allow you to find an ideal sitting position.
Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The 4 Series Gran Coupe's cabin is a pleasant place to spend a lot of time. The driving position, as you might expect from a sport sedan, is great. You sit low down in the car and the seats, while firm, are supportive. Even the back seats, which passengers might expect to be cramped, are roomy enough. A 6-foot-tall passenger can sit behind a 6-foot-tall driver and still have knee room to spare. The biggest gripe we have with the 4 Series Gran Coupe is its coupe-like visibility. The side mirror blocks much of the view out of the driver's side window, and the car's blind spots are large.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? The massive central touchscreen looks great, and the interface is so intuitive that the traditional iDrive knob down by the shifter seems almost superfluous. If you'd rather let your phone take over that screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto perform flawlessly. Our test car also lacked the upgraded upgraded Harman Kardon audio system, though the standard audio system is strong enough that it wasn't a huge loss.
Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Gran Coupe features a roomy liftback cargo area instead of a typical trunk. The liftgate opens wide, so the opening itself is akin to a giant mouth, swallowing everything in its path. It's far easier than packing a trunk. Storage for small items is less impressive. There are the requisite cupholders in the center console, though they can't fit larger bottles. The door pockets are quite small, and the glovebox and armrest storage are also smaller than we'd like. Got small children? The rear seating is roomy and has easily accessible anchor points to help with safety seat installation, though getting a bulky seat through the small rear door openings can be a pain.
Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? We tested the 430i, which gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's respectably fuel-efficient for a small luxury sedan. On our standardized test route, the 4 Series Gran Coupe just beat the EPA's estimate, giving us 28.9 mpg. Overall, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is pretty efficient for a luxury car.
Value
7.5/10
Is the 4 Series Gran Coupe a good value? The 4 Series Gran Coupe can get pricey but its mix of practicality, everyday comfort, and excellent build quality almost justifies its price. It's better to drive than the standard 3 Series and offers more storage space that makes it an even better daily commuter. BMW's warranty on the 4 Series Gran Coupe is solid, with standard and drivetrain warranties stretching for four years/50,000 miles.
Wildcard
8/10
The 4 Series is either extremely interesting or awful to look at depending on your personal tastes. That said, there's little doubt this BMW presents a distinct form on today's roads. Taste is subjective, but the 4 Series is certainly different, and BMW should get credit for that. We wish the 430i's engine was more powerful, so those seeking fun-to-drive thrills in this body style really need to consider the more powerful M440i model. That said, 430i owners won't feel snubbed, and the 4 Series is certainly more fun than the regular 330i sedan.
Which 4 Series Gran Coupe does Edmunds recommend?
We think the 430i provides the best value in the 4 Series Gran Coupe lineup. Adding all-wheel drive is an option on this base trim now, too, which will satisfy buyers in colder, wetter climates. Among the available options, the Convenience package and Driving Assistance Professional package are well worth getting.

2025 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe First Impressions
•4/24/2024
What's under the 4 Series Gran Coupe's hood?
The base 430i Gran Coupe uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine with 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant includes 48-volt mild hybrid technology, which allows for more liberal use of the stop-start system, and gives the 430i supplemental off-the-line boost for better acceleration.
The uplevel M440i Gran Coupe also incorporates mild hybrid tech, but applies it to a larger 3.0-liter turbo inline six-cylinder, for a total output of 386 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. BMW says this Gran Coupe can sprint to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, or 4.3 seconds if you opt for xDrive all-wheel drive.
Regardless of engine, the 4 Series Gran Coupe uses an eight-speed automatic transmission. EPA-estimated fuel economy numbers are still TBD.
How's the 4 Series Gran Coupe's interior?
Despite the four-door body style, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is best suited for two people. The rear seats are a little tight, and the sloping roofline impedes headroom. But hey: At least the Gran Coupe design includes a hatchback rather than a sedan's traditional trunk opening, making it easier to haul larger objects. You can even fold down the rear seats for added versatility.
On the tech front, the 4 Series Gran Coupe upgrades to BMW's iDrive 8.5 software. A slightly updated version of iDrive 8, this infotainment system now has a row of fixed buttons along the bottom of the screen for commonly used functions. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also included.
How much will the 4 Series Gran Coupe cost?
Pricing for the 2025 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe won't be released until closer to the on-sale date this fall. That said, because the changes are so minor, we don't expect the MSRPs to change too much from the current 4 Series Gran Coupe. Look for the base 430i Gran Coupe to start right around $50,000 — or perhaps even a touch lower. The M440i Gran Coupe should command somewhere around $63,000.
Edmunds says
If you can get past the offensive schnoz design, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is a nice-driving, well-equipped four-door that offers an added dose of functionality thanks to the liftback design.
