Not a happy Camper

2006 Toyota Avalon Limited 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

Have owned several Toyotas in the past including a Corolla and a Sienna van. So naturally when it came time to replace our old Acura Legend, the Avalon sprang out as the logical choice. My biggest regret is not doing more research on this vehicle before purchase. From day one it always had a nervous shifting transmission and rather hard seats. It accelerates really well and is rated at good gas mileage. Too bad it has never acheived what the sticker says I will get. Have never seen 22 in the city or 31 on the highway ever! Using a good old fashioned calculator I typically am getting around 20-21 mpg in surburban driving and 26-27 on the highway. Road noise is high and the exterior is bland.

Undependable, too expensive, too LOUD!

Very sad to have had this car six months. Several mechanical and electrical problems, but the worst of it is the VERY HARD seats and the loud interior. I drive on some rougher blacktop and the car is NOISY. I'm also picking up flecked paint on the front and the unprotected doors are getting chipped at the supermarket from other car doors!

Traded from a MB E-class. Every bit as comfortable and has been rock solid. Gas mileage runs between 25 and 30 consistantly. Exceptionally comfortable as a cruiser.

Tire Pressure

Sir/Ma'am: I already did a review-- "Why Look Elsewhere" on 1/27/06. I'm even more impressed with the Avalon Limited now than I was at first. What I'd like to tell current owners and prospective owners is: DO NOT go by the tire pressure on the info plate on the car. I have Michelin 215/55/17 tires and the car info plate calls for 32 lbs---checked with a Michelin dealer and he said that the "CORRECT" pressure should be 40 lbs in these low profile tires. Too low tire pressure causes premature wear. So, no matter what brand tires you have--check with a reputable tire dealer to ensure you have the correct tire pressure. I hope this helps. Bob

May be the best sedan for the price . .

Though other automakers may offer a model that beats the Avalon in one or two areas, taken as a whole, factoring in power, ergonomics, features, build quality, reputation for reliability, and fuel economy, this may well be the BEST 4-door sedan under $35,000 on the market. (A Lexus 430 is better, but though it’s pushing twice the price it’s not nearly twice the car.) As to my actual experience, there was a little “jerkiness” in the shifting initially, but by 1500 miles it had smoothed out to near CVT levels. I’m getting 25+ mpg on regular gas in what I’d term “hill country suburban” driving, excellent for a sedan with performance rivaling what passed for a “muscle car” in the late ‘70s.
