2016 Outback 3.6 Great car for the money

I purchased my 2016 Outback 3.6 in November of 2015. I've only put about 2500 miles on it at this point, June of 2016, but really like the car and would buy it again. It has been problem free, the Eyesite/Starlink work well, same for lane departure warning and Blind spot, Super easy to get in and out of, really happy with it. I just have a few complaints that have to do with features, not quality. 1.) no central locking feature for door locks, my 2002 Toyota Tundra has central locking, at over $38,000 for my Outback should have central locking, 2.) The power passenger seat does not have the same movements as the driver seat. 3.) no heated steering wheel 4.) Does not have Bi-LED headlights 5.) no secondary buttons for radio, to many steps to go through touch screen to get between nav and radio. 6.) Stereo is not that great for an upgraded stereo (Harman/Kardon). 7.) would be nice to have cooled seats as well as heated 8.) No lumbar adjustments for passenger seat. 9.) does not offer front and rear sensors. 10.) more exterior and interior color choices. I know these things most people would probably consider not needed, but I do and the central locking for safety reason, never know what stop light or sign you may be at. This is a car I would buy again and I hope Subaru will make changes and add some, if not all the items I think it should have. Just so it's here, I average about 21 mpg, but I live at a high elevation, and drive up and down hills a lot. Like the extended warranty they offer as well, got the 7 year / 100,000 mile warranty with zero deductible.

Great Car But Found NEW PROBLEM!!

Update 2020 07 02 -- We are still very pleased with our 2016 Outback however, we found a new problem buyers should know about: THE KEY GETS STUCK IN THE IGNITION. Recently, when turning off the car, the key would not turn completely in order to remove it. My research says there is a sensor that detects when the car is placed in Park, and once detected, it allows the key to be removed. If that sensor fails, the key will not turn to the point it can be removed. I have called several dealer to price repairs. A couple tell me to bring the car in for diagnostics and they will figure it out. At other places the repair cost ranged from $350 to $800. My research also shows this problem has been around for at least 5 years. So why Subaru has not addressed this, is beyond me. Whether it is in newer models, I don't know. There is a way to get the key out. Just put your foot on the brake and grab the gear shift handle. Press the gear shift button rapidly a couple times and see if that works. If not, pull the gear shift down to drive and then push it back into park. The intent is to trip that sensor to recognize the car is in park. It works, but is annoying.

Johnny Cash-black on black Outback

The above ratings may have been rated higher if I had enough miles on my car to properly assess them. I have just 500 miles and have not actually had a chance to experience what some of the questions want ratings for. I was driving a 2003 Vibe, this is 2015. I loved her(my Vibe), no complaints, no mechanical issues, but....it was time to move forward and treat myself to a new vehicle(she had a new owner within 24 hrs of listing). The problem, no vehicle spoke to me until...I test drove the Outback, MULTIPLE TIMES, over a year period to finally make my move. I did spreadsheet after spreadsheet, comparing mpg, insurance, specs, tire size, safety features, read reviews, etc. of my narrowed down search of about 4 different cars by different companies. I ended up ordering a 2016 Outback with all the bells and whistles, including the 3.6 engine. I LOVE it, it has nice and smooth acceleration and it drives solid. I was unsure how I would feel about the CVT but find no complaints at all. I did decide to purchase the 3.6 vs the 2.5 because I did not like the CVT and the 2.5 lag while test driving on the highway, accelerating on the entrance ramp of the highway and passing. As mentioned above, my spreadsheet statistics meant I was only going to put an extra $100+ a yr into my gas fund by going up to the 3.6 vs the 2.5. For those of you who eat out frequently, that means you might eat out 1 less time as a family for the advantages. It is presently fall, my winter will be upon us soon so I can see how it drives on the snow and if the driving ability matches all of the reviews I read previous to buying my car. I ordered the black on black because I did not like the look of the black colored wheel arch molds and cargo rack when looking at purchasing the white Outback. I did not order the tan interior, although I think it looks VERY SHARP with a black exterior because many reviews, including conversations with various dealerships, made mention of the tan leather taking on colors from blue jeans, etc. I plan on keeping Johnny Cash for 7-10 yrs, I wanted a no hassle interior (no regrets, my car looks very sharp). I love the concept of the luggage rails pivoting out upon the need to use them. I carry many items on my rooftop but do not like the extra noise and depletion of gas mileage by having a fulltime rack on my roof as I did with my past cars. This concept is waaaaaay cool! Should you need a longer roof line to fit your Thule box you can switch the rails to different positions so they provide a longer roof line. I ordered the Eyesight and love it! I especially like the cameras, the side mirror warnings and the adaptable cruise. I have not driven in conditions that allow the fog lights to "do their thing" on curves but the concept sounds promising. I will revise my review as I put more mileage on my car. Don't hold your breath though, on a good day I may only put 10 miles on my car. After a few road trips this winter I will be able to better assess. All I can tell you is, everytime I get into my car or look at it I am totally geeked. I made the right choice.....sorry Grand Jeep Cherokee and Honda CRV you just didn't speak loud enough to me. If you are in Metro Detroit, Michigan, I highly recommend Al Serra in Grand Blank. They will work with you, not pressure you, not trick you and make your purchasing experience smooth. I checked out 3 other dealerships, some of them 2x's. I was so unhappy that I was willing to fly out to the east coast to buy my car, until, I found Al Serra. Areas of improvement: Passenger seat-no lumbar adjustment Heated seats-does not reset to "off" when car turns off Dealership All Weather Mats- less than ok, I ended up buying WeatherGuard and love them Heated Steering Wheel-no option Small Glove Box Subaru site-no ability to purchase seat covers, yet their motto is pet friendly. This makes you needing to go off-site in order to purchase. 2017-18 Fall....I have owned the car for 2 years now. My evaluation is still close to the same as my last eval with few adjustments. I wish the car was a tad bigger, closer to an SUV but still love my vehicle. We just did an 8 hour drive and both of us felt like the front seats could add more comfort for road trips. My mileage is better than what was predicted by Subaru. Road noise is ok but after being in our Buick Encore where they have "Bose noise canceling" in the cabin area,I have become more sensitive to road noise. Also, the vehicle only recognizes 1 phone. If you share vehicles in your family that means 1 person doesn't have their phone sync.

I only have a couple hundred miles on the car, but this is everything I hoped for. I have previously been a VW, BMW, Acura owner and this vehicle is my favorite so far. It provides a perfect blend of utility, comfort, safety and economy. I don't live in a hilly area, and don't pull weight so the 2.5i is plenty of power, and I prefer the few MPG you gain. I also went with the PZEV... a few hundred to have peace of mind that I'm doing my part in polluting less. No complaints with the car at all, I'm very happy with the purchase!

Stepped outside the box on this vehicle and bought the top of the line. Absolutely love this car. I is very comfortable with 10 point driver seat adjustments. Wish I could raise the passenger seat but only moves back and forth. The safety features of the EyeSight are really great, so glad we opted to get this. The dash is well designed. Only downside is on rare occasion there is a glare from the screen but only on rare occasion. Four cylinder has really has good pickup.

I decided for my third Subaru I would get it with all the bells and whistles. I was one of the lucky ones who got one with a bad steering column and its been down hill since. I am on the second radio and the navigation still has problems. The rear hatch has been looked at three times and it still decides on its own when it will open or close. The answer my dealer has given is when the power hatch won't respond just hold the button down and it should become a manual hatch. How convenient. I want to know if I hold the ignition button down will the price of 3.6R I bought become the same price as the 2.5 and where do i get my refund? If you want to feel the "Love" save your money and get a base model. Edmunds wanted my updated review so here I am again. My dealership worked very hard to fix all the issues I had on the car. I stopped counting after the third radio swap. The rear hatch still had its ‘maybe I will open’ attitude and it had developed a wonderful hesitation in throttle response when it first stated up. In the end, even with all their efforts of the service department, the best thing to do was put the car out of its misery. I traded it in for a sweet 2018 Crosstrek 6 speed with basically nothing on it. I pretty much went from one extreme to the other with trim levels and I couldn’t be happier. This is our 6th Subaru so my issue isn’t with the brand, I just had a poor example of the Outback. It did hold its value quite well even with all its problems so that was positive.

First the wife and I love the way the 2016 Outback looks. We have had the car for only one week now. We test drove the 2.5 limited first around the test track, our dealership has. We got out of the 2.5 and right into a 3.6 limited, once more around the test track, what a world of difference between the two engine's. My concern was merging into highway or turnpike traffic, with 4 adults and luggage. We ordered the EYE-Site package, for the extra money cant beat all the safety features. We keep our cars for at least 10 years. Before even test driving the car's, I went into the Subaru service shop and spoke with two mechanics. I asked them if they would purchase the 2016 outback, one told me he has a 2015 outback and pointed to it in the parking lot. The other mechanic, let me know that he had a 2011 outback and would have a 2016 if he could afford it. Both told me if I keep cars for 10 years, to order the 3.6 engine, if I can afford it. Took 9 weeks for our car to be built and delivered, to the dealership. After all the research we did, I feel confident our new 2016 -3.6 Tungsten Metallic Limited, will be around for the next 10 years and hopefully enjoyed every mile driven.

I opted for the special order R3.6 with the H6 engine and every option and trailer hitch. The H6 engine and special CVT make this car very different from the 2.5. Highway performance is amazing. Merging and passing are easy. This car can cruise at 80 mph with no trouble. I don't recommend you do so but to know it can is a comfort. The extra 200 pounds for the engine and CVT makes a great difference in the ride. Very quite. My wife feels very safe and secure in the passenger seat. Plenty of cargo space. No recalls. Previous car was a 2006 Toyota Highlander. Was not impressed with the 2016 model.

Near perfect except seat comfort

This is my 2nd Outback. 1st being a '13 which I traded at 80k miles due to seat discomfort & it did use some oil. The '16 is improved in many areas. Now at 21k miles. While the driver's seat is much better, it isn't flawless. The upper back support annoys me. It seems many car manufacturers think they have to angle the upper portion of the seat forward. While some brands maintain a nice straight seat back. (I notice on many Ford's & a Mazda 6 I drove). At 6' 207lbs., this creates a pressure point on my spine & bugs me after longer trips. I wish subaru would collaborate with Toyota or another brand who understands seat comfort better. The headrests ratchets but still too eager, I flipped it backwards like I did on my '13. (normal aging promotes forward neck posture enough being forced by modern day cars). The hi beam illumination on my '13 were way better on than on my '16. I almost think the '13 had better grip in deep snow but had only 1 experience in the '16 where it seemed only the front wheel spun in a turn position in deeper snow. Still could use auto door locks and automatic unlock by pulling interior handle as my Dodge Intrepid had this way back in 2001. But I only point out my gripes. Everything else is great. 4 Cylinder power is plenty, CVT is superb. Steering response is great. I can cruise above 80mph with ease. Update: Now 45k miles. Just put new Michelin Premier LTX. Mpg increased to 28mpg + with 80mph my cruise average. Car is great except seat comfort as I stated before. Maybe a shorter person wouldn't notice as much. Road in a Ford Fusion this week and its seats were great. I have cracked windshield from a stone last winter in a passenger top side. But glad I didn't replace because just got another. If it were not for my seat gripes I would continue driving. Subaru find someone to help you understand seat comfort. They don't get int. Think I will look into something else. Maybe '18 Mazda 6 or give the new Prius a try.

The Outback Ain't what it used to be

Abe, 04/17/2018
2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited PZEV 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl CVT)
7 of 7 people found this review helpful

I bought this car new, top of line, with all options, Eyesight etc. I've now driven it for 28 months. Its the 4th consecutive Subaru Outback I've owned. Its one of the most disappointing cars I've ever bought. Here's the quick list of buyer-beware issues, none of which the Subaru dealer is at all inclined to help me address: 1) Th gas mileage sucks. I get between 19-22 mpg on summer roads, perfect conditions. I've tracked the mileage and fuel in a spreadsheet since purchasing. The car has an EPA rating of 27-34 mpg. My last outback got 27. 2) At 20k miles I started hearing a bobbling noise in the front suspension, both wheels. Dealer insists all is fine. Googling shows its a common complaint. 3) at 20k miles the factory tires were shot. 4) the CVT transmission is awkward at best. Try to do a quick K-turn and it leaves you waiting in limbo in the middle of the street while it tries to find a forward gear after reverse. On a hill? You'll slide backwards for a second or two before it finds a gear. Driving at idle speed? It jerks and coughs. Dealer says this is all normal. 5) The Electronics system/Starlink is miserable. Navigation is not useable. Phone connection launches programs like Pandora, even if I dont have an account and cancels my phone calls mid call to launch it. etc. 6) The Eyesight system is unreliable. Fast approach a stopped object? Sometimes you get a warning, sometimes you don't. Cross your fingers. But 20% unreliability = 100% no trust. 7) the battery dies, all the time. I park, I sit in the car on a phone call for 30 min, car is dead. Dealer says its because the FOB is too close. If that's true, that's a bad design. Apparently cannot sit in your own car unless it is running. Google shows many complaints but dealer says nothing is wrong with battery. Overall, my sense is Subaru cut major corners to bring this car in at its pricepoint. I wanted the price point, but I also wanted the Subaru I knew over the last 20 years. I would have rather been priced out for the quality than misled into a lemon.

Update: Subaru response better, but not problems

I had a rear wheel bearing go out at 50,000 and they fixed it under warranty with no problems. It's the issue with the screen on the dashboard that has me frustrated with Subaru's response. My screen developed wavy lines at about 35,000 with are visible even when the car is off. In sunlight they make it so you can't read the screen. I took it to my Subaru dealer and they said it was on all of them and normal. Both my sisters and two friends have Subaru's and they do not have the same problem. I took it to Subaru Corporate and after sending pictures the guy said he had never seen that. I had to go back to my dealership for verification and again the dealership said it was normal and if they replaced it , it would do it again. It's a $1600 repair and Subaru Corporate said they would give me $1300 towards it, so they admit that is isn't right. It's too bad Subaru won't stand behind their product anymore, I was an advocate for the brand for many many years but it's time to find a new car company. Update: My woes continue. The motor on the lift gate went bad(60,000 miles) and they wanted another $1200 to fix it. Subaru Customer Service stepped up and had it covered, but the problem ( noise and stuttering lift) resurfaced again and the dealer wants $350 to replace the hinges ( I must have abused them?) on a car with zero rust. My wife opens the lift gate maybe 2 to 3 times a week so that shouldn't be the problem. Subaru Customer Service is looking into the issue. This is our second Outback and last, because my wife now hates the car. Update: File under, you have to be kidding me. My latest escapade is the key wouldn't come out of the ignition. It was a defective part in the shifter and Subaru did step up and fixed it for free. My sisters both have Foresters and have had similar problems. Update: Really? The window on the passenger side front won't go down from the drivers main control on the door, but will go down when you do it from the passenger seat. Go figure.

We haven't bought a new car in about 10 years, and took this purchase very seriously. We basically wanted all wheel drive in something that would get good gas mileage, and after a lot of research the 4-cylinder Outback seemed to fit the bill. We've had it for 2 months, and already have 3500 miles on it. I have to say I love driving this car. The ride is great, great handling, the seats seem to be comfortable as we have taken 4-hour drives in it. The electronics are probably more than I would have wanted, but the options came with the power passenger seat and sunroof I did want. I use the cruise a lot, and the adaptive cruise option is neat. The only problem so far with the car is mileage. One reason I chose the 4-cylinder was EPA highway of 33 mpg. So far I'm only getting about 29. I've asked about that, and the Subaru dealer told me it would improve over time. We'll see. But I would recommend the Outback to anyone.

feel very safe. get eyesight! too many safety features to pass up on. don't have time to list all of them. in adaptive cruise control you don't have to adjust if there is traffic, car will slow down and resume on its own. also, car will stay in lane by itself. there is an eyesight package that many salespeople and dealerships are not aware of called package 14 which includes eyesight, blind spot monitoring, and power lift gate without adding other costly options. cloth interior looks ok but not practical. get custom seat covers

I have now had the Outback for 7 years and its going strong! Aside from routine maintenance, the only problem I've had was a wheel bearing going out 2 years ago. First time I've ever had this problem with any car (including two previous Subarus). Not sure why but it could have been from some unnoticed trauma to the car rather than a defect. The car still drives like it did when it was new, though.

We love this car. We were in crash in our 2015 Outback when a woman pulled in front of us(failed to yield) and the front end of our car was destroyed. The car was totaled. My wife and I had injuries, but nothing life threatening. The 5 star safety rated Outback safety features saved us from serious injuries. Based on this, and the fact that we really liked this car, we have bought a 2016 Outback with all the same safety items. I would also like to add that Joe Amore of Subaru International of Merrilleville, In did and excellent job in finding us a new Outback with the extras we wanted

Still lots of power to merge on to freeways, zip over the Cascades, and handle off roads while camping, and fishing. I will give you my cons: The only major one is the Navigation system is worthless. Would not pay money for it, but it probably bundled with other features I would want. I will say some of this could be my like of understanding, but it sure is not intuitive. I use my iPhone and connect it as my audio source. The problems I have are trying to put in an address is very difficult, and it will not allow a customized address while you are driving. My wife has tried. We give up. Minor annoyances: The locking button to lock/unlock tall the doors, is not lighted. All the other driver side armrest controls are (mirrors, windows). Now how many times do I adjust my mirror in the dark. Never! How many times am I trying to unlock the doors in the dark. ALWAYS! Please light up the locking switch. The plastic interior side panels seems to scuff and scratch easily. Otherwise I am very pleased. I do recommend this car, apart from the navigation system. I have only had this Outback 2 weeks so cannot really speak to reliability, just going on what Consumers Reports and Edmunds reviews. I really like this vehicle. I traded out of a Honda Pilot I have had for 10 years and really liked the ride, storage, seating, comfort, and style, but gas mileage was poor, and my Children are adults so we do not need that big of a SUV. That said we backpack, fish, camp, kayak, ski, etc. so needed a vehicle that could tow light trailer, do forest service and gravel road, snow and mountain passes. Went of the 3.6 engine for towing, lost some gas mileage, but like the extra acceleration when needed. Does as well as my pilot. The ride with the 18" wheels, and suspension is delightful, smooth and handed the rough spots well. Comfortable seats, love the eye sight features. The mirrors that adjust at night keep me from being blinded in the sideview mirrors. The navigation is really nice and the satellite radio has been a surprise I did not expect to enjoy as much as I do. It handles well, steering give me a feel of the road without being annoying. The braking is fantastic, so smooth and even. I look forward to many adventures with this vehicle and hope it lives up to its safety and reliability ratings. Buying the vehicle was no hassle. Did it through Edmunds, the dealer beat their suggested market price by over a $1000. Up front pricing, relaxed, no pressure, got the color, features, and better price. That was amazing. Dealer and Subaru corp. seem very interested in customer satisfaction unlike some other make I have had in the past and have never bought again. Go Subaru

With aging parents and growing kids to transport, I had completely outgrown my 2005 Honda CR-V. It was a nice car and served me well, but I was ready for a change. I was looking for a Crossover or SUV with similar or better gas mileage and driving experience. Nothing against Honda, but I'd ruled out another Honda because I was ready for something different. Other SUVs like the Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue and Dodge Journey caught my eye, so I test drove and enjoyed each. However, after doing the research on those models, I just wasn't sold on what they had to offer. Their rear visibility, blind spots and safety ratings were a concern, especially on the Rogue. Too, coming from a CR-V with All-wheel drive, I wanted to keep that feature without having to pay extra for it. So, when I finally got around to doing the research, then test driving the 2016 Outback, I was sold, almost immediately. The quality of the build, interior materials, front seat legroom comfort (for a tall guy like me - 6'2"), quiet cabin, nice ride and feel, short turning radius, unobstructed view, ease of use of the infotainment center and many other thoughtful appointments made me an instant convert. And, the CVT works great, too! In some ways, it's hard to believe that a thoughtful guy like me made the switch so quickly. To top things off, Stivers Subaru of Decatur Georgia did an excellent job of addressing all my questions, to make the transition seamless! I purchased my 2016 Subaru Outback, 2.5i, Limited, in Twilight Blue with black/charcoal leather interior. I LOVE it! Since I made the switch, I've received many favorable comments from friends and neighbors about how it looks. They're very handsome vehicles, and there aren't many in my area, yet! Those who've had the opportunity to ride in my Subie were very pleased with the experience. I know I've made a good choice, and now, I'm looking forward to many happy years ahead behind the wheel of my 2016 Subaru Outback!

Had a 2010 Nissan Rouge with 140k miles when the CVT transmission went. NOTE: Previous vehicles were a Lexus and Infiniti - now more value conscious. Narrowed search down to: Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Toyota Highlander, and the Subaru Forester. When looking at the Forester I drove the Outback and was sold immediately. Post two months of average use and one 1,500 mi. road trip, its actually beat all expectations. EyeSight rocks! Came loaded with everything except the keyless entry - still have to put the key in which is a minor annoyance. Have the green exterior with light color cloth seats which I'm somewhat concerned about keeping clean. Cargo space and access (to) are exceptional. Front seats are very supportive. Cargo and back of the back seat protective mats come in handy. Am looking at purchasing the black plastic wheel arches. Tips: Spray glass cleaner onto a cloth rather than directly onto the inside of the windshield so as not to get any cleaner on the EyeSight cameras. Have Subaru tech walk you thru EVERY button and its use - they can be "quirky". When using the UBS cord with your phone, don't expect to keep the cover closed - it'll really crimp (the cord). Don't attempt to run it on empty nor "overfill" when fueling. The performance information provides all that you'll need. Can't wait until the first snow!

we are very happy with the 2016 Outback. Ours is fully loaded with EyeSight. I love the adaptive cruise and use it on the highway all the time. Lane keep assist can be annoying sometimes, especially through construction zones while passing a truck, it wants me to stay in a lane and pushes me too close to the truck. Outback is very comfortable, super quiet, great seats, very impressed with overall luxury feel. lot of soft touch materials in the cabin, some plastics look a beat cheaper tho. Ride is nice, acceleration so so, but it's SUV with a 4 cylinder, so that's expected. Gets a good gas mileage. i made 480 miles trip without a stop going 80-85. Very impressed.

The factory battery was replaced under warranty after stranding me two times. Was told by serviceman the factory battery was not strong enough. Why did it take two strandings to get a better battery? Should be a factory recall. I overheard another customer in dealership waiting room that if she has another dead battery, they would replace it. I asked why she had to be stranded again to have her battery replaced. Subaru knows this is a battery issue. Battery died a 3rd time after stopping at a drive thru fast food place. Traded it in fir a Rav 4 hybrid as soon as I was able.

Edit: Final review, trading the car in tomorrow. I have absolutely no complaints about this car at all. I have driven it nearly 150,000 miles without any issues. Many oil changes, a handful of set of tires, a few other consumables, maybe five car washes and one transmission fluid change. I didn’t exactly follow the maintenance schedule but I did not experience one single problem. I would keep the car if I didn’t need more towing capability. Not one problem over 8 years. I towed both slightly over the hitch weight and occasionally slightly over max weight as well. The car easily handles spec,, although trailer brakes make a huge difference. Installing a trailer brake was a pain. That should be a factory option but is not. This car continues to impress me. I purchased this car based on the size/fuel economy. I never thought that I would love it, it was to be an economy cruiser. The ride quality is good but a bit harsh. The upside is you feel in control in all circumstances. The 2.5 is far from powerful but is always adequate. The highlight of this engine is the fuel economy. I am getting a combined 28 mpg in mainly below freezing temperatures and short trips, hardly a recipe for great mileage. The two chances I have had to take the car on long trips have provided over 35 mpg. 35 on the first and 38 on the second. I have had the opportunity to drive in snow and I'm pleasantly surprised at the cars ability. I believe the stock tires are not the best but will use the up before changing. I would highly recommend this car to anyone who values economy and capably above appearance, because in the end this crossover is a wagon. One year of ownership update. The car has been spot on per my initial expectations. Great economy crossover. I doubt there is anything available that can provide nearly as much space and deliver the same or better fuel economy. It has been 100% reliable but that should be the norm. I did have to have my drivers seat fixed but only because it was loose and making noises from time to time. Everything about the car just works well. Nothing all too impressive but no disappointments either. I would purchase it all over again at this point but probably go for the leather interior. 2.5 years of ownership update This car continues to be a solid little gas saver. This summer I began towing a pop up aframe camper with ease. The thing still gets 20-24 miles per gallon while towing. Absolutely nothing bad to say about this car. 4 year update: Still a great car for the money. I have nearly 80,000 trouble free miles on the car now, roughly 8000 miles towing a ~2200lb camper. I still have over 30 mpg average. Very happy with the economy of the car.

2015 Outback Reliability Terrible

Adam, 09/01/2016

In March of 2015, my wife and I purchased a brand new 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5 Limited with eyesight for use part-time at our SC house. Considering that we have only put about 3,000 miles on the vehicle in about 1 1/2 years it has been a huge disappointment. First the gas filler door wouldn't open and the first and second recalls didn't fix the problem - the third finally did months and months later. The windshield cracked in half - another recall. Another recall for the taillight bulb that made the eyesight worthless came a few months later. The first weekend I drove it I couldn't get the car to restart about doing an errand for 10 minutes. I had to call my Maryland dealer to tell the SC dealer that there was a TSB on the issue. Now after numerous check engine light issues that went away on their own the check engine light comes on and puts all the other warning lights on. Apparently this was due to driving through a large puddle after a two hour rain. This storm had no effect on our Volvo that drove through the same storm and puddles. Now, even after dealer service the light comes back on with all the other warning lights. Can you say Toyota?

Love this Subaru 2016 Limited that we purchased 6/30/2016. Roomy, handles well, great interior and technology features. Already taken it on one long road trip and also to the beach...so nice to have all that extra cargo space for our gear. Passengers loved the leg room and their comfy seats. Only thing I can negatively mention is that road noise is not as quiet as my BMW but few cars would be. I am VERY happy with my purchase of this car and look forward to many years of enjoying my Subaru.

Previous Subaru was a 2010 2.5 Outback and while aI loved the car amazing in the snow and off-road I always found it a little sluggish when loaded with the family especially notaceable in the mountains. When replacing the 2010 We decided to to go for the 3.6R. We have had the car 2 months now and I am stoked with our choice. The 2.5 was a great car but the 3.6 is not only a great car, its fun! The performance is exceptional I love driving it. If you enjoy driving I would highly recommend the bigger motor.

I traded the car in March 2022 for a Lincoln Corsair. I was due for change and the current vehicle was immediately available. While it is more luxurious, I miss the larger cargo space and abundance of safety features of the Outback. After six years I had no trouble with the Subaru except for the need of rear brakes after only 30,000 miles. I may own another in the future. I still rate the Outback as an excellent car. Having had the Subaru Outback Limited for a year I'm enjoying it more as time goes by. This car has so many positive safety features, I.e., Eyesight, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, etc. It alerts the driver of possible road icing on cold days. If daydreaming at a traffic light it alerts the driver that the vehicle ahead has moved. The ride is smooth and handles road bumps with ease. Acceleration is amazing for a four cylinder vehicle. Steering is very responsive. While not as luxurious as my former Toyota Avalon, the interior is stylish and attractive, however the driver's seat is not as comfortable as I have enjoyed in previously owned vehicles. There's ample rear seat legroom, and the reclining rear seats provide passenger comfort for long rides. Overall I am very impressed with the Outback. With the rear seats folded down, there is plenty of room for hauling things. I've become a devoted Outback owner. As to reliability, that remains to be determined as the vehicle ages, but I'm optimistic given Subaru's overall record and my experience over the past year. Now, two years and 14,000 miles after purchase, I am enjoying the Outback more than ever. With the rear seats folded down, I am amazed how much can be stowed in the cargo area. Great vehicle. Four and one-half years and 30,000 miles into ownership, I'm still enjoying this vehicle. It has been trouble-free and still looks and rides great.

This is the 3rd Subaru wagon I've owned since 1980. I had forgotten what an awesome vehicle the Subaru is. When I decided to move on from my mid-size Ford SUV, I searched diligently for a replacement and finally decided on the Outback. I had forgotten what a wonderful vehicle the Subaru is. Safety is at the forefront of the design & the "Eye sight" option is a definite winner. The all wheel drive & its ability to take a little tougher terrain than a paved road are excellent-one of Subaru's legendary qualities. In addition to safety, the interior has been highly upgraded. The leather package in the Premium level is second to none. The leather is plush and has a soft, buttery feeling to the touch, not hard like my Ford. I would like to have a little more user friendly system for the voice commands but only Ford has the Microsoft Sync system which is the best. But I did not buy my Outback for the voice command system. All things considered, the 2016 Subaru Outback is a winner and I anticipate getting well over 100,000 miles out of it with only routine upkeep & maintenance!! GO SUBIE!!!!!

I purchased my 2016 Outback in March. I notice the roof rails on the car when I purchased. They didn't sit flush to the car. Showed the service department. Subaru technical support was called in to check roof rails. New set was ordered, put on car, worse than one that came on car, took back to dealership and said I wasn't satisfied. They called Subaru again, they said send to body shop, that was done, still not fixed. Was given 800 number for Subaru and told to get work order number. My car has been in shop 3 times and not fixed. The dealership has offered to give me a trade in value, less that purchase price. I do like my Outback, but I'm wondering if they know what to do to get this problem fixed. If you have a 2016 or 2017 Outback, or looking to purchase, please check out the roof rack. Was told Subaru is aware of this problem, please notify your deal ship and Subaru. This is a Subaru problem, not deal ship, let Subaru know you know this

First of all, I think the 2016 Outback is a great vehicle. It has lived up to my expectations and I highly recommend it. Very comfortable, well designed and the eye sight system is great. My only issue so far is the famous Subaru customer service that I have heard so much about with glowing reviews. I haven't had that experience. When I got the car the Nav maps weren't working properly, so the dealer swapped it out for another infotainment system from a demo on the lot. So far so good, except that I didn't get the advertised 3 yr SiriusXM traffic subscription. I asked Sirius about it and they said contact Subaru. I contacted the dealer and they said contact Subaru customer service. I contacted customer service and they said they would research and get back to me in 48 hrs. It's been almost 2 weeks and no contact. I e-mailed them several days ago and no response. This is not a big issue, but i am disappointed after all I have heard over the years about Subaru customer service. Hopefully I won't have any serious problems down the road where I need their help. This is an update on 12/1/2016: The issue with the radio subscription has been resolved. It was a matter of talking to the right person and coordination with SiriusXM. In the meantime we have almost 16,000 miles on the car and have nothing but compliments. Took it from Texas to Montana this summer and it performed very well with a combined 31 mpg for the trip. The seats were comfortable and the Outback did very well both on the highways and mountain roads. Highly recommend the Outback. The words that come to mind when describing the Outback are comfortable and safe with plenty of space. This is an update to my previous review. Now have over 20,000 miles on it and the gas mileage has remained steady at over 28 mpg in mixed driving and 33 mpg on the highway. I think the power is adequate for my needs and it is very comfortable and quiet to drive. The all wheel drive system makes me feel safe on the roads under adverse weather. No issues whatsoever with the Outback and I was able to successfully update my maps using the complimentary updates offered by Subaru. This is my second update after 30,000 miles. The Outback has done great in trips from Texas to Montana and Colorado over a couple of summers. No service issues other than I had to replace the tires after about 26,000 miles. I still highly recommend it.

Navigation voice control does not work. Navigation maps are not detailed enough. Once an address has been entered to the system, there appears there is not a second screen showing turn by turn directions. To complete the technology this vehicle offers, it could use both front and rear beepers. The cross traffic sensors are good but do not pick up stationary objects and there is no warning in the front, especially for parking or close encounters. Hopefully this SUV will offer a reverse automatic stop and 360degree cameras by the time my leases runs out. Besides the navigation, this is a great vehicle for the money. Especially impressed with eyesight and all the technology that came with a single reasonable package. The V6 motor is strong and both quiet and smooth. I have no regrets replacing my leased 2013 RX350 with this SUV and I especially like the savings.

I have had this car for 14 months and it has been in the shop more times than I can remember. A basic list of features that don't work: Navigation interface, starlink interface, USB functionality, to finish off the tech cateagory the touch screen is very slow and glitchy. Eyesight system dumps a sever amount of braking power way too fast while on cruise control, which shifts down completely if the cameras don't work. The liftgate will jam and refuse to open even with no cargo making contact. I could go on an on about what all is wrong with this vehicle mechanically. Hose lines are getting wrapped around small motors around the car, the AC has was completely rebuilt week 3 and now requires full replacement and recharge. I have chewed through 3 batteries and Subaru can't find a power drain. I am getting rid of this vehicle asap before i am injured in operation. The recalls have been extensive and at no end, received another yesterday.

2016 Outback Issues.... now gone

I purchased my 2016 Subaru Outback in September of 2015 and sold it after Subaru stated the loud noise was “normal” operation. Love my new car with no issues and it is not a Subaru. We even got ride of or older outback. Reasons are: After about 5 months a strange noise started to occur from the back of the car for which I thought was the muffler. The noise was intermittent so the dealership could not diagnose the problem but told me to premium gas, fuel additive as it could be engine pinging. Finally they did hear the noise and stated it was very loud evaporator pump for which they were going to replace. After picking up the car, I find out that they did not service the car and only added insulation to try to cover the noise as Subaru stated that I am too "sensitive" and no one else is having the issue. This noise has waken my baby up from a sleep, made people come outside from their camping trailers where fans were on to heat, but again I am too sensitive and am hearing this. To this point there has been no resolve, I have been lied to by Subaru with repairs not performed as instructed and now loosing thousands of dollars if I have to get rid of the car. People like the look of the car and the features for which I agreed with but tell them my issues and they have moved onto look at other cars.

If you live in the mountains, the 3.6 would certainly be the better choice but anywhere else, the 2.5 is going to be perfectly adequate and everything else about the car is darn near, perfect.

This is my first Subaru. I like the safety features like the eye sight. The all wheel drive is great. But after spending $33,000 for car, I was disappointed in some of the cheap materials used. The molding on the rack on top of the vehicle has come loose and after taking it to the dealer while under warranty, they said they can't fix it. I had to replace the tires at 24,000 miles at the recommendation of the dealership, and had to replace the battery at 25,000 miles. There were a few times that the battery died on us and had to jump the car to get it started. I took it to the dealership while under warranty, and they said they needed to reprogram the computer as it wasn't charging the battery on short trips. They said that was a starting point. That didn't fix the problem and I got the car back into the dealership but it was a week past the 3 year warranty running out. They told me I needed a new battery. The service advisor stated that he wasn't a fan of the batteries and tires they put on the car at the factory as the stock battery was only 300 cold cranking amps. For $150.00 they would put in a 500 amp battery. I complained that the problem started while it was under warranty and it was only a week past the 3 year warranty and asked if they would work with me on the battery and they refused. (I also purchased the car at this dealership brand new) It's a shame that they have all the safety technology in a nice car, but they use cheap tires and batteries. I guess the the people at the dealership are unaware of the old saying, if a customer is happy, they tell 5 other people, but if they're unhappy, they tell 25 other people!

We owned this car for a week and it has been recalled for a steering column defect. Subaru did the right thing with the recall and they gave us a rental car, but it has been four weeks and they keep saying we are waiting for the part. I hope this review draws attention to the problem. Follow up--It has been 25 days since our defective car was taken to the dealer. They told me it would take a week to 10 days to fix this. The car is now repaired. After 4 weeks I called the dealer and mentioned I posted on Edmunds. That seemed to get their attention and the car is fixed. THANK YOU

Just got back from Tahoe and the safety features are great . The lane assit helps on the curvy mountain roads. If you want more power up mountain roads get the 3.6 engine . Rides smoothly 👍🏽

Had my Outback just two weeks when the vehicle was recalled for steering problems. My dealer (Troncalli Subaru, Cumming GA)) was very proactive in resolving this - called us the morning of the recall and gave us a nice rental car to keep until the car has been fixed. Bad problem, very nicely handled.

2016 Outback Limited with Eyesight and Navigation. Four Cylinder. We just completed a long trip SW Florida to Morganton NC, to Phoenix, AZ then back to Florida on I-10 E to I 75 S. Really like the 18.5 Gallon gas tank. Gives us a lot of range. Comfortable feeling when driving on some of those roads out west with gas stations few and far between. I agree most of the previous contents so I will not repeat. RE 4 cylinders vs 6. We did not feel deprived at all for lack of the 6. I would not buy the 6 just for the pickup but if it rode better and quieter, I would definitely consider it. Starlink was useless to us on the trip. We listen to talking books downloaded from our library to a cell phone. We then use bluetooth to listen on car radio. Starlink would not work in that situation. It seems now that give a 3 year subscription to Sirius radio. That is good if only to stop the annoying calls and e-mails from them if you do not renew. We only got a 30 day free trial. Generally like the Nav except that I detest the fact that the Voice Guidance cannot be turned OFF. I anything that is dangerous because when travelling at speed on an interstate at highers speeds by the time the voice tells you to take a turn in xxx feet, it is too late to do anything about it if you rely only on the voice. Looking to buy another one so that we have two. Our older 2007 Toyota Avalon Limited runs well but lacks the safety features like eyesight, backup camera. It does have the dynamic cruise control which is almost never used because it it not smooth like the Subaru's. Will probably buy the 2017 Touring which inclueds what we like as standard. After reading some of the other comments, I will also evaluate the 6 cylinder to see if it does ride better.

6 years on and Outback now has 89,000 miles on it. Still no major issues and I’m very pleased with the vehicle. Awesome in the Pacific Northwest snow & rain. Gets about 26 mpg city & hwy.

I had wanted a Subaru Outback for quite sometime. I finally decided to get one. I figured the 2.5L would be adequate for my needs; and it is if you’re already off the line and going. Off the line however, it’s super sluggish. Could use more low end off the line torque or a low pressure turbo charger. Around 30,000 miles the dual zone HVAC system stopped working entirely. Thankfully it was converted under warranty. Since then, the power windows work when they want to. I’ve gone through 3 batteries, and every time I bring it in for service I’m told the charging system is just fine. I’m going through tires every year and a half on highway only. I’m on my 3rd set of 65,000 mile tread life tires, and am averaging 19,000 miles yearly. Oil changes are $85 through the Subaru dealership for the 0W-20 full synthetic— using the same 0W-20 at my Toyota dealership for my Tundra (which uses 3 more quarts of oil) is about $30 cheaper, PLUS free tire rotation. Frustrating that service is so expensive. I won’t buy another Subaru. Too expensive to maintain and too many issues.

Just after my 36000 mile warranty expired, I began having trouble getting the key out of the ignition when I stop. Happened at least 50% of the time. I went online and saw others are having the problem. Took it to the dealer and they said they had been seeing these complaints for the last 4 months. While they were willing to work with me on the price, they were not willing to fix a known defect at no charge. Subaru does not stand behind their product. These cars should have been recalled and fixed. I am very disappointed with Subaru. They do not stand behind their product.

It needs a little more pep, also it takes time for the gears to kick in,It is an amazing car. I should have gotten the 6 cylinder. I never ever had a problem with the car just changed the brakes and battery and tires. It is super reliable. It handles great in the rain and snow.

2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl CVT)

I've had my 3.6R for just over a year now and have about 15000 miles on it. I've been on long drives over the Sierras down to Mammoth 2x and drove in some nasty conditions this winter (did you see the record snowfall this year in Northern CA?). I've owned a Grand Cherokee Limited and also have an MDX. The Subaru dominates in terms of traction, confidence, and obviously in mpg (even with the 3.6R). I had a 2002 2.5L in the past and the upgrades Subaru has made over that model is noticeable. The 3.6R is not lacking in power. The HK stereo system is solid and bluetooth streaming my spotify app never fails. I've used the XDrive in the summer offroad and it just grips into the dirt/scree. Love the folding crossbars and ease of access to ski racks, cargo box, and bike rack. The only complaint I have is the gas pedal is a little sensitive coming out of first. Also, while you can deactivate, the various eyesight warning systems are a little annoying for this experienced driver. I've had the system brake on me a couple times while parking at about 5mph going into the rising sun...must be a glare or something. With that said, the eyesight works....possibly too well to a fault. Bottom line, I needed a utility vehicle with power, storage, comfort, and the ability to get me through chain controls and big pow days. The Outback hits all the marks.

2016 Outback Premium with Eye Sight

I went for Eye Sight in lieu of Limited with leather. I still have power rear gate, heated front seats, dual climate zone, etc. as they come with the Eye Sight package for Premiums. I don't like the leather much anyways. Hot in summer, cold in winter. I love the car. The only thing I don't like is the CVT transmission. When you shift from R to D, it takes literally 2 seconds before it engages. It's not instant like a normal transmission. It can be an issue when you back up on a busy street. Check that out when you test drive. It's not as bad for me though. I think I'm getting used to it. UPDATE: It's been 6 months since I bought the car. We drove to Toronto and came back. With the adaptive cruise control and other eye sight features, the long haul was so easy. I'd definitely buy another Subaru in my next purchase.

The only beef I have with my Outback is how it takes a few seconds for the transmission to engage when going from reverse to drive, and the acceleration is a little abrupt. Otherwise I am loving it. The ride, gas mileage, performance, comfort accessories etc are all great. It's a lot of car for the money.
