Underrated Car

I think the knock others give any Legacy with the 2.5 engine needs to be challenged. I have found that I have plenty of power and can't understand why there are those reviews that call for more. It simply makes no sense. I have all the get up and go I'd ever want. The car is comfortable, quiet, and loaded with technology. The EyeSight system works flawlessly in every way and the interior is nicely appointed, giving the impression of a much higher priced luxury car. In fact, within the last couple of months, we rented a so-called "luxury" car while on a trip to the west coast. Our Subaru is a far better car in every way. I love the steering responsive LED headlights, and I love their auto dimming/brightening capability as well. The Harmon-Kardon sound system makes listening to media a total joy. The only knock is not having an extra inch to take the front seat back. I'm a big guy (6'4') and could use just a tad extra, but still, compared to competitors' cars, I can get in and out with much greater ease. The ride is quiet, braking is solid, yet not abrupt, and the AWD gives it superior handling characteristics.

Great car for a great price

I tested the new Camry, Accord, and Sonata before deciding to purchase the Subaru Legacy. There were many reasons that included overall value, safety, performance, and reliability. In addition, the Harmon-Kardon sound system is superior to all of the other offerings. While I am still breaking the car in, I am getting better MPG than I anticipated, and the safety features give me great security while on the roadway where no one is paying attention anymore. I was told that the base 2.5 engine was not very energetic, but I have not found that to be the case. The base engine is very peppy and I have no problems merging into traffic in the DC metro area.

If you are shopping for a classy, updated, contemporary sedan, look at the 2018 Subaru Legacy limited. I’m coming from a 2015 Legacy which I liked very much. This 2018 Legacy has a much tighter suspension and quicker handling. It has good acceleration quite acceptable for everyday routine driving. I was also impressed that road highway noise has been reduced over my 2015 Legacy. However, I am really disappointed with the seat comfort. The seats are extremely hard so be prepared for back and leg pain on long trips. I did not pick this up on the test drive unfortunately. It was discovered on my first hour long trip. About 30 minutes into the trip, my rear went numb all the way down through my right foot. The leather looks very nice, but buyer beware of the hard seats. Update: 2019. After driving this car for a year, the seat is more acceptable/comfortable. I’m being very critical, but I wish there was less road noise on the interstate. Braking is great. I like the eyesight feature. Pretty nice care overall.

Surprising 4 cylinder

Edmunds rates the 4 cylinder engine as Con. I disagree completely. Based on the Edmunds review I wanted the 6 cylinder. However, after driving the 4 cylinder I found the power as good or better than my previous VW with a 200 HP turbo 4. This Legacy has plenty of power even on the highway accelerating from an on ramp. The CVT transmission is amazing as it can actually be shifted like a normal transmission. A few days ago I was driving on a straight road at about 40 mph and at least five car lengths behind the car ahead of me. Suddenly the car in front of me stopped and slowly turned into a strip mall it almost passed. The car had no stop lights or directional. I was paying attention but before I pulled my foot off the accelerator the Eyesight System stopped me before I hit that car. After driving the car for several months now, I have additional comments on the 4 cyl Boxer engine. The poorest acceleration is between 40 and 60 MPH. That said, if you find yourself in this weak area trying to accelerate into highway traffic, simply downshift one gear using the paddle shifters. This will provide plenty of merging power.

I bought this car two weeks ago. I was hesitant to buy a Subaru because they are all over the roads here. I test drive the car, and the dealership treated me very well. After this, I knew that the Legacy V6, was the right car for me! I’m loving this car more every day that I drive it! I make excuses to drive this car as much as possible. Pros: -fast and instant acceleration. -quiet inside even with V6. - absolutely beautiful loaded interior with comfortable seats and pretty blue lights. -infotainment Center is easy to use and has STARLINK . -security system included. -elegant exterior -AWD included. -Subaru is a great company and very customer service orientated. Cons: -Remote start only runs for 15 minutes then shuts off. Haven’t figured out if I can change this. -CarPlay skips on occasion. Both cons are not faults with the vehicle itself, which is why it gets 5 stars.

I <3 my 50th Anniversary Legacy

I thought I wanted a Premium, but I hated it when I test drove it. I wanted to check out the 50th Anniversary Legacy model, which most closely compares to the Limited models. One may intuitively think that the Premium is better than the Limited based on the name, but when one takes note of the differences, it is clear that the Limited is superior to the Premium. Compared to the Premium, the Limited handles better and it is a quieter ride. Additionally, the Limited's interior has finer appointments for passenger comfort that rival a Camry or and Accord. Also, the Limited offers more safety features than a Premium. Compared to other brands' mid-size sedans, the AWD and Eyesight technology make this car worth it! While the engine's horsepower is frequently criticized by speedway motorists, really... what do you need more than 170 horse power for when driving in suburbs and cities during rush hour? It works for me in all weather conditions and promises a safe ride. If love is what makes a Subaru a Subaru, try the Limited models and fall in love with a Subaru! Update 1 Year from purchase follows: so a little more pickup and go acceleration would be nice; there were recall issues with the radio that took too long to resolve; gas mileage could be a tad better—wish they had hybrids. Moreover I still love it.

2nd Legacy...probably not my last

Bill M., 01/15/2018

So my first Legacy was a 2015. Leased that one since I never had a Subaru before and wasn’t sure I would like it. Well I did and decided to buy my next one (can’t beat 0% financing). On paper this is the perfect car for me. Live in North Idaho now and needed AWD. For the price and features I don’t think there is a better value out there. For a fully loaded 2.5 Limited Legacy with Eye Sight Pkg for around $30k....is not bad at all. They did enough with 2018 Legacy compared to 2015 Legacy to make me feel I got a better car than the 2015 I traded in. Some of the new features I like in the 2018.... LED lighting (including headlights), auto high beams, lane keep assist, 8” screen, Tom Tom navigation, new multimedia interface, CarPlay, 2 usb power ports in the rear, rear braking assist, predictive guide lines on the reversing camera, better blindside notification, tire pressure monitor showing each individual tire’s air pressure, stitching on dash, smaller steering wheel with updated controls, overall updating of interior and exterior. Some things that I didn’t like in the 2015 that they didn’t change in 2018.... the tires that come on this car still suck (especially in the snow), location of front usb power ports can be a pain to hook up a power cable, seats could use some more padding. I am getting a over 30 mpg in mixed spirited driving...not bad for an AWD car in my opinion. Handles pretty good but is better with better tires. Acceleration is surprising decent for a four liter. Safety wise, I don’t know of a car with more safety features at this price point. If you are looking for an AWD car with pretty much every safety feature available today, that gets good gas mileage, is a great value with a pretty decent look to it.....this is your car in my opinion, just change out the tires.

I can't say that I planned on buying a Subaru. I've enjoyed my Hondas and Toyotas and even a couple of Hyundai Sonatas over the years. To say I was excited about the new Camry re-design was an understatement. My only hesitancy was my love of the new Civic design. Then, after reading, and reading, and reading all ABOUT the cars, I went an looked at them. I don't want to knock the other guys, but my excitement about the Camry had a wet blanket thrown on it. The Hondas were still in the running, but on a whim, I decided I should "look" at the Legacy. I always viewed it as a rather boring and mundane design. Nothing special to attract me to it on the outside. My nephew had bought an SDI and "tripped" it out. My niece a Legacy. The exterior did not attract my attention. Reviews concerning the acceleration concerned me because, even though I'm in my late 50s, I like acceleration. Instantly! So, turbos with their turbo lag were not the panacea they claimed to be. Plus, living in New England, AWD was an added benefit (though an impact on gas mileage). So what about the review!! Well, I test drove a Legacy (Limited mind you) and loved it!! The fit and finish were superb for a non-luxury sedan. The interior materials are superb. The layout of the instrumentation is nearly flawless. Apple Play, Android Auto...nice - get the hint Toyota. Roomy cabin and trunk. Naturally aspirated engine. Great sound system (Limited). Like the Eyesight. I've never been this pleased after a purchase. I ALWAYs find something wrong that makes me wonder if I made the right choice. Not this time. My only nits. 1) Be nice to have a USB port up by the Eyesight console so I could cable to a dash cam on the passenger window. Or...have a built in dash cam (front and rear). You have the cameras already. Store the images and make available to the user. 2) Have a "mute" button on the steering column for the radio so I don't have to listen to 1-800-KARS4KIDS - and one that takes me back to live broadcast 3) maybe I'm missing something but is there an "off" for the radio?? If I push the power switch, radio shuts off but when I turn it back on, it resumes from where it left off in the broadcast. So I DO have to listen to 1800-KARS4KIDS unless I hit the fast forward!! 4) I might suggest somehow moving the tuning knob to the left side along with the power knob. Why? So driver doesn't have to reach so far. Also, with touchscreen next to knob and with the "reach", I often find my knuckles hitting one of the touchscreen buttons while I am trying to tune with the knob. 5) And finally, I did "ding" my new car by backing into my truck (placed in a different place by my wife). I backed into it from an angle. My alert sounded last second and did NOT stop me :-( like it did one other occasion when I approached a 3 inch patch of snow on the ground. Argh. Not sure if this "angled" backup sensitivity can be improved upon but I now have a small crack in my bumper. These "nits" are very small indeed. I love this car. Handles well. Audio is great. Tight finish. Perfect suspension. Decent gas mileage. Average acceleration but not sluggish. I would highly recommend it.

After a disappointing experience with a $33K Volkswagen, I decided to change brands. Not an easy decision, as I had been a VW loyalist for over 30 years. I've always liked Subarus, and nearly bought a Legacy in 2010. I did research before going to drive the car. I knew all about the supposedly annoying CVT and underwhelming 2.5 boxer four. My initial test drive impression made me doubt what the reviewers had said on these two topics. The CVT is exceptional. The smoothness and the programmed "shifts" that mimic a conventional automatic really do make the transmission a pleasant experience. After six months and 12K miles, I prefer it because of the smoothness. When I need power to pass or merge, I use the paddle shifters and instantly have the power I need. On the subject of power, it is true that the 2.5 boxer four is slower than most other cars. But power is not the reason that I bought this car. Because I drive around 20K per year, I needed a car that was comfortable. A car that would not leave me with a sore back or feeling tired after driving a long distance. It had to be safe, reliable and able to cope with bad weather. It had to deliver good economy. The Subaru Legacy fits all of those criteria when bought in the 2.5i Limited trim with Eyesight. Much has been written by other owners about the space, comfort and safety of the Legacy, so I'll just say that I agree with them. It's fantastic. The economy has been a huge surprise. My last VW, which was lighter than the Legacy and did not feature AWD, got lower mileage on the same routes. The EPA mileage estimates are very realistic. 36mpg on the highway is very possible. My only complaint is with the interface on the new Starlink entertainment system. There are well documented bugs in the system that cause random lock ups, loss of functionality and other issues. Internet forums for Subaru owners have multiple posts describing them. While I have not had the same amount of issues as someone that I know who purchased an Outback with the same system, I have had the navigation fail during a trip to inner city Philadelphia. Not fun. I have since obtained a software update from my Subaru dealer and it seems to have fixed the issues. But again, that is my only complaint. I went so far as to email Subaru after driving through some pretty heavy rains and discovering just how well AWD works on wet roads (if you've never experienced it, you'll be amazed). I told them how pleased I was with the car. Not only did I receive an email reply thanking me, but Subaru sent me a $50 roadside assistance kit with a hand written note saying "Welcome to the family." Now that's service! I spoke to my salesman about this, and he has heard similar stories from other owners. There is a reason why Subaru has outstanding satisfaction scores and owner loyalty. You owe it to yourself to look at the Legacy instead of just giving consideration to the Accord, Sonata, Camry and Passat. None of them can match the uniqueness of the Legacy and the Subaru experience. UPDATE: I have had the Legacy for four years now. The car has been completely reliable. It now has 80000 miles on it. Service costs have been very reasonable.Drivability in bad weather continues to be outstanding.Average mileage in mixed driving usually falls around 30 to 31MPG. On longer trips the car can still achieve 36MPG. I bought an extended warranty that has only been used twice. The driver's seat frame broke, causing a terrible squeak. I am an average sized person person so this was curious.. More recently, the blower motor in the ventilation system failed. The warranty fixed that at no charge as well. The materials in the interior have worn very well despite the high mileage. On the exterior the only item that seems to be aging is the headlight covers. The tops of the the lenses are beginning to get cloudy. I continue to be very pleased with the car, and I plan to put even more miles on it. I recommend Subaru's regularly regularly to my friends and family.

If you are looking for a well-optioned, all-wheel drive vehicle with a good amount of technology and safety features for under $30,000, you should seriously consider the Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited with the EyeSight and Navigation package. The safety features are extraordinary as demonstrated by our salesman during the test drive with the forward collision braking and rear brake assist. The options are competitive with higher tier brands plus this model has REAR HEATED seats--not many mid-level luxury brands offer this until you pass the $55k price point.

Get the 3.6r!!!

George, 05/28/2018
2018 Subaru Legacy 3.6R Limited 4dr Sedan AWD (3.6L 6cyl CVT)

Three words: engine, engine, engine! My 2015 Outback was a refined and capable truck that was let down by its asthmatic 4-pot. It was loud, slow, unresponsive, barely drivable in the winter before the engine warmed up, burnt/leaked half its expensive synthetic oil every 3000 miles and had a cylinder knock at around 2500 rpm. Junk! The six-cylinder engine transforms the car into a luxury experience. Honestly it drives like a Lexus or Audi in the limited trim. It feels twice as fast and twice and responsive as the 2.5 legacy/outback (better transmission with the 3.6), and all the while the engine is whisper quiet at cruise and around town. When you do goose it, you get a nice low-end burble from the boxer H6 engine where any v6 would sound coarse and raspy. This engine is Subaru’s best kept secret in my opinion, one of the last delicious holdovers from the company's pre-recession push to be Japan's BMW and make crazy performance trims of their family cars. It will be sad day when they discontinue it and stick their loud, laggy “two-point-O-tee” engine from the Ascent in the next generation. Apart from the 3.6 engine there are many other reasons this Subaru is the best-kept secret of the midsize sedan market. First, it’s a slow seller for a company used to chronic supply shortages, so dealers are willing to let these go cheap to score more SUV allotments from the factory. Second, the full time all-wheel-drive is a godsend even if you never go off road or in snow. I have never screeched the front tires…ever…even when flooring it to make fast left turns across oncoming traffic; this car takes fast corners and abrupt maneuvers like it’s on rails. The all-wheel-drive also gives the car criminally smooth acceleration. I’ve driven much more expensive cars whose designers need to sit in this sedan and take notes because it advances from a standstill like a magic carpet. Drive this and then drive the v6 Camry/Accord/etc. and they will feel like porpoising wrecks that want to torque-steer you into a bush. Third, the Legacy has the best midsize-sedan interior and certainly the best Subaru interior. The designers took a page from the Volkswagen playbook and created a clean, symmetrical, timeless aesthetic out of materials that feel solid and don’t rattle/creak, all without copying VW’s tiny infotainment screen and bad UI. The front seats are comfortable enough for road trips yet easy to shift around in when navigating busy cities. The back seat headroom is admittedly not the best, but people under about 6’2” will be fine and Subaru makes up for it with tons of legroom, heated rear seats and rear USB charging ports. The doors are also well laid out for taller people like me, even with the seat back almost all the way the B pillar is never an obstruction to entry, nor does it impact the rear passengers like in other cars. Complaints? Apart from personal preferences there are just a few niggles that everyone will find annoying. First and foremost is the music auto-play, the radio starts blasting every time you turn the car on OR off without setting the volume at zero. This is a feature in all new Subarus that nobody I have talked to likes and it should be axed accordingly. Second, even the closest setting on the adaptive cruise control leaves a gaping chasm of space, which every manic rhode island driver proceeds to fling his or her Nissan Maxima into without warning and make my car hit its own brakes to make room for the next guy. Third, in a similar vein, the warning lights and correlated bings and chimes are a hazard because they come on prematurely and usually mean nothing. Let some air out of the tires because the dealer inflated them way over the recommended psi? Tire warning light. It’s cold outside? Cold weather warning light (not kidding). Quarter tank of gas left? Fuel warning light. I actually ran the car out of gas once partly because I was an idiot, but also because the warning light usually means nothing and is ignored accordingly. These are small grievances though in a fantastic sedan that I will buy again in a heartbeat if given a chance. H6 engine or not, I hope Subaru doesn’t follow Ford off a cliff and kill off the Legacy because of the current crossover fad. Even if it isn’t as popular as the Outback, the Legacy is an important brand ambassador because it makes a compelling feature and value proposition to midsize-sedan shoppers who would not otherwise consider buying a Subaru.

I just purchased a 2018 Legacy 2.5 Limited with Eyesight, Navigation, LED steering responsive headlights, and exterior dimming mirrors, and I love it already. It reminds me of a 2012 Camry I used to have, but has a better ride and improved safety features. So far it has been comfortable, quiet and smooth. Visibility is very good all around, and I find the engine power to be more than adequate. Braking is sure and steady. The safety features are helpful yet unobtrusive, and the interior is very well made. I thought that the front seats could use a smidge more thigh support, but I think they're pretty good nevertheless. Most people should be able to find a good seating position using the 10-way power adjustable seats. Phone, navigation and other entertainment features seem to work well, and the controls are good. The handling is slightly better than my Camry, and the steering feel is fine. Storage is excellent, with numerous cup holders, and the scissor trunk hinges allow additional room and access. This is no sports sedan, but I think it will be a comfortable and reliable car for years to come.

Great car for the money

I had to move from a sports car (370z) to a sedan to accommodate my growing family. I looked at several options and settled on the Subaru Legacy Sport. I chose this trim because the features to price ratio fit my budget. The extra cost for the few features I would get in the limited or limited 3.6r wasn't worth it to me for a daily driver. While many reviews say the car is underpowered, the 2.5 boxer is in the range of similar cars (albeit the lower side of the range), I have never felt it lacking for daily driving in traffic, which accounts for 90 percent of my driving. The ride is very smooth. There is a bit of body roll, but it holds the road well, even when I push it a bit. The interior is very roomy, and the large trunk space is free of obstructions, allowing for decent cargo hauling. I can fit comfortably in both the front and rear seats, though taller people would probably have a headroom issue in the back. The full-time all wheel drive is a great feature - My wife's Nissan Rogue has it and handles well in the winter, and I expect that the Legacy will also be a decent car for inclement weather. For my favorite features, I am torn between the infotainment system and the Eyesight system. The basic infotainment system of the sport has Tom Tom navigation and a host of other features that work great, but Android Auto is a very good too. I tend to use Bluetooth for short trips, and Android Auto for longer drives where I want to use Waze or be able to use the car's screen to change music, etc. Eyesight is impressive, and getting those features at under 30k (about 20k less than luxury brands offer similar features) is great. The adaptive cruise control is very smooth and can handle stop-and-go traffic, and lane keep assist and departure warning come in handy. Looks-wise it is a little generic, but still has nice lines. All in all, I find the 2018 Legacy Sport to be an underrated car that makes a great family sedan.

Just about 400 miles on my new 2018 Legacy and I love it! So far, so good. Everything seems great. I'm expecting this to continue. Our Legacy is a very nice looking sedan; twilight blue is the color we selected with a gray cloth interior. The sound system is fabulous! We love the clear quality of the sound whether it be radio, CD, or Sirius XM. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

5th Subaru (but NOT our last)

Traded in my 2015 Subaru Outback Limited in January when lease ended and spotted a 50th Anniversary Legacy, which immediately changed my mind on another Outback. This IS the best vehicle I have ever owned ( along with my wife’s 2018 Legacy), in my 55+ years of vehicle ownership. First trip from metro Detroit to Traverse City and back got 29.9 mpg even though the Legacy wasn’t even broken in yet! Comfortable, easy to drive, improved navigation and eyesight systems all add up to a car that I WANT to drive. This is our 5th Subaru but will no be our last!

I must be overly captivated by the strengths of Subaru Legacy. Those include smooth highway ride, quiet, great visibility, spacious and comfort. Best in class AWD should make it a very safe vehicle as well. What makes the vehicle not appealing to you potentially? Acceleration and wheel handling aren’t exciting yet entirely sufficient. I read the car makes an annoying sound when the acceleration pedal is pushed down all the way. I disagree as I find the sound not annoying at all. Final comment: this review points to my appreciation for the car’s strengths. I expect there are similar cars to love and also forgive their particular weaknesses.

After my wife's 3 Outbacks, I picked the Legacy as our 4th Subaru, Premium with EyeSight package. It's no frills car for my work appointments. It has the same smooth purring car engine vibration which I love and the drive is very comfortable and roomy for a family with kids. Buy something else if you want a sports car and don't complain about the acceleration, it's totally fine for passing and getting on the highway. I can't wait to drive it in the snow.

A Good Car Made Better

Took a 2018 Legacy Premium lease late August. Aside from a small software problem Subbru has promised a fix for soon, this is a much, much better car than the 2104, and quite a bit better than the 2011 we liked more than the 2014. Fixes: 1) much less tiring steering feel, 2) much quietier, especially the drivetrain & transmission 3) seating more comfortable, 4) ride/suspension vastly improved, and 5) a bunch of small but important interior feature/comfort changes. The most dramatic improvement was the highway mileage; our last trip at 74 mph on a pretty hilly NYS Thruway was 39+ mpg for the 250 miles - pretty good for a pretty good sized AWD car. That is about 33% better than the about 30 mpg for the 2014. City mileage is just a little better. To be redundant, Subaru made some very good and important changes.

Subaru Legacy worth the Buying

I had a Toyota Camry Hybrid. Living in the northeast, I felt it necessary to have the AWD. The Legacy is compact, comfortable, rides beautifully and was worth the money. I especially like the adjustments of the driver's seat which can be raised and has an adjustable back support. I've only been driving the car for six weeks and sense that the hybrid is slightly better on gas. Other than that, I'm pleased with the purchase and will feel safer when winter comes and I need to navigate hills in snowy weather.

Legacy

Our second legacy.. 3.6 ( 6 cyl ). Could not be happier.. Roomier and more comfort than our neighbors Honda plus the 4 wheel drive and the more modern safety items... eyesight works great but will take a bit of getting use to... drift in a lane and you get a gentle tug back from the steering wheel... Best is that a deer jumped out on a back road and the car braked... I think we might have still hit it (it just got out of the way) but by then we would of hit at 5 or 10mph not 40... the 3.6 is not a super mpg engine.. only about 20-22 around town but hits 29-30 on our road trips to the grandkids ( and our neighbor with the honda claims he gets more like 35-38 ) but for all the noise the reviews make it that computes out to a few hundred dollars a year.. if thats the price for 4WD thats cheap. very big trunk, remote start cuts out after 10 or 15 min ( but car is warm in winter, cool in summer by then ) Only complaint is that there are no factory bike racks... have to go with add on... Our last legacy really held its value. Always a buyer for 4WD cars here in northeast.

Make sure to look Very carefullu at the hood. 8/10 2018 Legacy (doesnt matter what trim) had hoods that were miss aligned. Unfortunately I did not see this until after I left the lot. My Legacy was particularly off (lifted up by over half an inch on the passenger's side of the vehicle). After I found it and brought it to the attention of the dealership they have been tring to fix it. I bought it back in February. I had to take it back to Subaru 5 times (2 hour deive for me) before the issue was fixed. I was also told that this was a known issue. Subaru...they are just apparently ok with having dealerships and customers spend weeks and months of headache to figure out this known issues on their own.

Updating NAV maps is tedious. Harman AUDIO - needs more power and WHY is volume a scale of 1 to 38 ?? Which should you hear - map turn info or radio?? Voice command - if phone on bluetooth and you try to FIND something it prompts "Call Walter Smith ( or whatever SOUNDS like your search -walMart') I didn't say CALL I said FIND ! SO have to turn OFF bluetooth. NAV only saves about 30 ?, 50? items then Memory is FULL - CRAZY. My $100 Garmin holds about 500. Eyesight - twice has stopped me when not needed. Guy in front taking left - I see him, he's turning - but Eyesight stopped me in road - luckily no one near me because no need to stop ( unless he didn't move). It was doing it's job, BUT unexpected stop in traffic has happened and unable to move for a few seconds.

Love the car but HATE the cruise control

We bought the 2018 Legacy because we think Subaru has safe vehicles. We also have an Outback and we are very happy with it. Unfortunately, we did not realize the cruise control had been updated and advances and decreases in 5 mph increments. This is very dangerous trying to get the cruise set at the speed you want rather than watching the road. We have complained to Subaru and were told if enough complaints they might do a software update. We are even considering a different car that does not have this type of cruise. We like the car and it gets great gas mileage. We just wish that not just Subaru, but other auto manufacturers would go back to the basic cruise control that only increases/decreases 1 mph.

If you live in an area that showcases the four seasons, this car should be high on your list to consider. There are more than a few other "sporty looking" cars that I could have chosen- but those 45R wheels that look so cool in the summer don't really help much in difficult weather. The Legacy has one of the best infotainment setups you'll ever find. Head and shoulders above entune, to name one. The tech in this car is something else. The layout and menu response is fantastic. One of the few cars that will give you three years of navigation built in....not 90 days. The Subaru driver assist (lane change, cameras, safety, etc) is top shelf. With regards to the power plant- if you live out in the desert, or a place with lots of open roads and little to no traffic, then you'll probably be less than thrilled with what the Legacy offers up. However, if you're in a more populated area where commutes are a pain and traffic lights abound- does it really matter if you don't have 350 horses at your disposal? Look at all the reviews for the Legacy and you'll find that generally the only "con" is a weaker engine. Well it's plenty capable of moving you around just fine. Earlier models of the Legacy labored more- but the 2018 seems to have been tuned/tweaked enough to address many of the previous shortcomings. More torque in the low range, and a smoother shifting engine made it a non-issue for me. Cosmetically, the interior layout of instruments is nearly flawless, but quality of materials...fit and finish could be better. If this was a 30k plus car- then I would have a problem. Comparing the quality to those of other 25k and under cars- and it's what you should expect. There is give and take in a car of this price range- and when you remember you're got Subaru's AWD system to get you through just about anything...well then a little plastic here or there is OK with me. Having said that, I do love the cloth and stitching on the Sport model seats. Really stands out. Some of the fabric around the door area or floors is a bit more less desirable. The Sport model is based entirely on looks- there is no boost in power or suspension. It's quite a beefy look though- the front is very aggressive in design and one of my favorite areas on the car. 19" wheels, yet they are not low profile summer slicks so you don't have to be concerned with what to do when winter arrives. Overall, a fantastic car to own, given the right circumstances as I laid out above.

It's hard to compete with the price point of Subarus when you live in a snowy region and want AWD. Admittedly, I wanted a Subaru but fell for the Legacy because of the improved exterior styling of the 2018. The acceleration is below average for it's class but I'm not drag racing so it's okay. The ride is always smooth.

A step up from the Ford Fusion

Robert V, 01/19/2019

This is a company car for me and have been driving it for about 6 mos and 15k miles. Previous I had a 2014 Fusion SE for 90k plus miles. Compared to the Fusion the ride is better, the engine noise is less agricultural for a 4 cylinder. The CVT tries hard to be a real 6 speed auto. The on center feel is not as good as the Fusion, and seems to wander more. It might be the OEM tires. For similar money the Legacy is a step up with heated seats, nicer entertainment, quieter and smoother ride than the Fusion. Driven in snow the AWD is good but the factory tires are poor when braking and turning. If I owned it I would look for better 4 seasons tires. I have had a loaner Outback from the dealer and if you are looking for more cargo space and increased clearance it appears to be identical inside go for it. Mileage has been around 32 on trips and the large tank will get you far. If buying an Outback I might go for the 6 cyl but in the sedan the 4 is more than adequate. This car has the "eyesight package" which at times can be annoying, adaptive cruise works great , lane keeper will bounce you back and forth until you are sea sick.

I love every single bit of this 3.6 R limited. It is precise in steering, safe, comfortable and Powerful. Its CVT is responsive and performs amazing. Gas mileage in city is great, having a V6. I love the navigation. I had hard times with Voice Recognition for a day. It turns out that it runs smooth whenever you say the Province/State name in full rather than abbreviated. For example, I live in British Columbia, which we call BC. When I said BC in the command related to the address, VR did not work. When I switched to saying XYZ, Street name, British Columbia (in full), the navigation worked without any issues. Back seats are lovely. Mine has 4 heated seats and a heated steering wheel. I love that. Not to forget the friendly Eyesight. I like how safe the car is. My final comment is: this is by far the best ever car I have owned. I owned 3 SUVs and a Mercedes (C-class) before. Nothing is as good as my 2018 Subaru Legacy 3.6 R.

Too Many Issues

I’ll start this off positive. This car drives and handles wonderfully and I love the power it has for a family sedan. Not to mention, all of the safety features. However, if I had to do all over again, I would get a model without all of the tech. Within a year of owning the car, i noticed it would throw codes related to how hot it was outside and the head unit was just a mess. The Bluetooth would connect and disconnect randomly or would show it was connected and not play anything. It shut off completely and froze during a 5 hour road trip one time. Only thing it would do was randomly flash an irrelevant thunderstorm warning. It also left me stranded due to the gas gauge reading incorrectly. This was a recall and was fixed. The head unit issues had a software update that supposedly fixed all of the issues. It didn’t. It still has all the issues, but it doesn’t happen as often aside from adding a glitch in the navigation where the visual says go left but vocally tells you to go right. The most recent issue I have is my driver side window has a mind of its own and won’t close until you have pushed the button 30 times and then will only go up an inch at a time and the auto feature will just quit working.

I have owned this car for one year, I have got to drive it for about 5 months of that, It has been a frequent shop monkey, round one( was in the shop for a week) in the shop, a squeaky and popping driver seat which resulted in having the whole seat base replaced. round 2 ( was in the shop for another week) in the shop was for another squeaking and popping seat and also a loose driver seat which resulted in another seat base being put in the car. Round 3 ( was in the shop for 2 weeks) for another squeaking and popping and loose driver seat, Also radio head unit glitching out which resulted in a another seat base and the Engineer of Subaru being called, The radio needed to be updated and that fixed that issue. Trip number 4 to the shop ( las in the shop for 2 more weeks ) Squeaking and popping seat Also the heated seat went out number 4, This resulted in the field engineer coming to the shop and taking a look at my car, Engineer stated that the seat needed to be greased an lubed. Once I picked the car up that fix lasted till I got maybe 5 miles from the dealership. Trip 5 to the shop ( another 2.5 weeks with to car) Seat issues again squeaking and popping and loose, Field engineer was contacted again and they finally put the seat out of a 2019 Subaru Outback in my car ( outback and Legacy are exactly the same interior) This fix lasted about 3 weeks. Trip number 6 in to the shop, ( 3 weeks with out car) Seat issues again , squeaking and popping and loose seat, Field engineer was contacted again and the dealer was instructed to install a new seat base in the car . Trip number 7 ( 4 weeks with out car) to the shop, More seat issues, Squeaking popping and very loose seat. Engineer was contacted and another new seat was installed in the car. Trip number 8, this one was a doozie, (total time in shop was 3 months. ) The seat was giving problems again, the front end suspension was making a squeaking and popping noise, the Chrome trim around the radio and gear selector was flaking and pealing off, the sunroof was leaking and the radio head unit went out. The seat was replaced in the car again, The radio was replaced the trip was replaced the sunroof was replaced and the while front end suspension had to be redone including the steering rack. Lucky Subaru is making the car right. But boy has this car been one more headache, Love definitely did not make this Subaru a Subaru. So mu advice to anyone looking and considering one of these I would definitely think twice before making this jump and purchasing this car.

Everything from comfort down to performance value. This car literally has it all, you get a wide range of options using the dash panel just above the steering column, and the main screen using a wide range of options for entertainment, and navigation. The mini dash panel has a unique option for cruise control that is built into the steering column, and allows you to never have manually adjust the speed or slowness of the vehicle. The driver seat lets you adjust to how comfortable you want to drive from a tall person to shorter persons perspective. The mirrors give you good angles to be aware of your surroundings. The climate control system is bar none with front and back heated seats. Now, let's get to the engine performance, some in the reviews here say it takes 9+ seconds to go from 0 to 60 MPH. In a pigs a**, I was able to achieve 0 to 70 in less than 4 seconds. Where do you get this is the slowest car? Maybe a 4 cylinder engine, the 3.6L V6 isn't a slow car by any means. Not to mention the symmetrical AWD this car has that is known to be better than Audis AWD system. You really can't go wrong with this car.

My vehicle is a 2018 Subaru legacy limited. It has a 3.6 engine and all the trimmings. I only have 10,200 miles on it but it is eating up the antifreeze everytime I use the heater or air conditioner. I just got back from the dealer and they found nothing. I don't think it is dripping like it is supposed to when driving. I highly recommend all Subaru owners keep an eye on their antifreeze use. At the dealers all they do is top off the fluids. They topped it off then it dropped to low on May 27th. Then last week it was below that. They didn't find any leaks today. I fear it is like my Buick that I got rid of. Their antifreeze is turning out to be just like Subaru's. You can't use anything else but yet it is what is destroying the engine. Then they have the nerve to end the lawsuit. It is really like Really? They are still selling this acidic crap that is destroying engines and the lawsuit is over ? Really? Now I have to keep an eye on it for the next 6 months until the lease is up. Does anybody else have any antifreeze/ transmission problems? I think it starts with the antifreeze except people don't know until it/s too late. My family used to own a car repair business until my father died.

I have 2018 Subaru Legacy 2.5 L. The car had a broken transmission at 177700 km; it is awful for a car broken transmission before 200 000 km because of the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Basically this transmission 2 in 1 like usage of manual and automatic but the gear system concept works as similar as a bicycle chain operating system. Easy to broke and hard clutching when the car is loaded to chance vehicle’s torc power especially accompanied 2.5 L weak engine power when the car was loaded. The transmission might not fix or rebuilt because the cables and chains inside you have to completely replace it. A new transmission is $10500 plus $1500 labor the car itself was $28000 plus tax that’s mean the dam transmission almost half price the car and Subaru is a very rare market portion in Canada so that finding any used part pain in the ass. It took me a week to find used transmission and 2 weeks I had been waiting for installation, Subaru part and service department so bad about customer service. As a final do not buy Subaru or CVT transmission

after a couple of years, the major flaw in my legacy remains a big problem for all back seat passengers--adults cannot fit in the back seat. the sides slope so far in where they meet the roof sloping down that no adult of any significant height can sit there. my daughter is only 5'10" but her head hits the roof in back unless she tilts her head toward the middle. such a STUPID mistake. i wish i had test driven it with someone in the back seat. i would NOT have bought it. now it's only good for two adults in front and children in back. That's $26000 down the drain.

Smaller than other sedans on the market but definitely has a lot of get-up-and-go! Lots of convenience features like heated seats & mirrors, lane assist, auto eyesight-assist brights, lots of cool features and runs great. AWD is always a plus and of course Subies last forever so high hopes for this one

Do your due diligence

2018 legacy owner, less than 2,000 miles. I am upset that I received a letter from Subaru that my CVT transmission's warranty has been extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles, what ever come first. I bought this car thinking I could get an easy 200,000 miles with regular maintenance. Guess I was wrong. After 100,000 miles the $5,000 repair, if needed, will be on me. Should be a recall! Why was I not told this was an issue when I made my purchase? This is a known issue that was not disclosed. I would not have made this purchase had I known of the transmission issues.

Infotainment system & CVT

I love this car, excellent overall build quality, but the CVT could be a fatal flaw. Like others, I received a warranty notice about the CVT issue being covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. These are pretty generous warranty terms so it's acceptable. Everything else about the car is fantastic. I just wish the trunk opening was wider. Only other gripe, which is common for any vehicle with touch screen infotainment systems is this; there is no way to clear notifications on the screen without reaching over and touching it to clear. If they remapped the built in speech assistant button the steering wheel, this would completely solve the problem and get rid of a useless and non-working piece of technology. Other than that, I'm very happy with the car after 2 years of ownership.

Over the 6 years that I owned the car, there were no major mechanical issues. However, the electronics were no good. Too many failed sensors (TOMS, window sensor, etc.) and the radio was a mess.
