2010 Forester
We purchased our 2010 Forester in Febuarary 2010 when our daughter was born. We mainly purchased it for safety and reliability. The vehicle was fun to drive and handled well. We were disappointed that the a/c compressor went out and even after being replaced continued to make a grinding noise and would quit blowing cold off and on. Dealership never was able to fix it. Also found that the seats were uncomfortable and fit and finish were lacking. We traded it off on a toyota, which we have owned several of and never had service problems with. Would not reccomend the forester.

I had turbo blow at 81.000 miles -$2.500. Variable valve sensor done at 82.000 miles Power steering rack replaced at 95.000 miles Valve cover gaskets done at 98.000 miles Power steering pump leaking at 99.000 miles.

Second Forester
First one went 180,000 miles, then head gasket leaked. Decided to trade in. Did the RAV4, CR-V, Forester loop, and returned to the Forester. The dealerships were the most professional of any brand. I will take it on long dirt roads for fishing, and love the better clearance. No longer a "small" SUV! At least not on the inside. My priorities are value, reliability and gas mileage. Two out of three ain't bad, but I haven't taken long trips yet, so maybe mileage will improve. It's got a miles-per-gallon display, which is nice. Same giant moonroof. Styling is sharper, and I'm glad they didn't slope the roof any more.
Horrible transmission
It seems that any time I change speeds suddenly, my car revs up and feels like it's stalling. The first time it happened, I was on a major highway and went to pass in the left lane when suddenly the car revved really high (as if I threw it into neutral and stepped on the gas pedal) and wasn't moving! I saw a car coming up on me in my rear view mirror and thought, "that's it, I'm a goner!" Just today on my way to Subaru for the seat belt recall, as I pulled out onto the highway, the car revved to 5 and it felt like the gas pedal was stuck. When I slow down to make a turn at a corner, the car jerks when I put my foot back on the gas. 3x back to the dealer; they say that's how this trans works!
Crash!
My 2010 Subaru Forrester just suddenly accelerated upon being put into reverse to back into a parking spot. If anyone had been behind me they would have been killed. My car jumped a curb, ploughed through some gnarly bushes and landed on the back end of an Audi parked in the lot behind it. My foot was not on the accelerator and the car mat was not caught on the gas pedal, 2 excuses Subaru has given when this has happened before. When the car landed on the Audi and couldn’t go anywhere it was still revving at top speed. NEVER buying another Subaru. Found out by checking online that this has happened many times before. Never addressed by Subaru. I never got in that Forester again. Now drive a Chevy Equinox and very happy with it. Edmunds just asked if I want to update my review. My update is I still will never drive another Subaru. Still love my Equinox. Updating again 2020 - Still love my Equinox, not ever buying a Subaru. 2023 still feel the same. 2023 update - Equinox still going strong. I think I am now a Chevy girl. 2024 update - No to Subaru, yes to Chevy. No complaints with my Equinox. 12/24 update - 7 years of loving my Chevy Equinox. 7 years of thanking God no one got killed in that Subaru death box. 2025- Equinox still going strong. No to Subaru. No no no.
