Reliable,just keep checking the dipstick.
158000 miles, bought new. Replaced head gasket last year. Still burns 1 qt per 4000 mi, but doesn't drip. Heat shields have rattled at idle for 6 years. Not comfortable for big men. Still gets 26 mpg. Very reliable.

Fun to drive go anywhere vehicle
I agree with everyone about rattles. There is some issue with interior finishing that causes minor rattles. For me it's far from annoying and dealer will fix it. Will post the output after fix. For now I just pump up the music and enjoy the ride. Trust me, get a manual if you want to enjoy driving forester without sacrificing money with the XT. Cornering the vehicle and driving over rough roads is pure pleasure. Went on a 400 mile trip and I was least tired. You won't even feel the fatigue of long trips. It handles winding roads exceptionally well. Down shift to 4th and it will take up any hill incline on freeways. Hill incline assist is nice. Looking forward to winter's driving on ice.

Great package that needs just a bit more
I have had my Forester for 3 months now. I love it; didn't think I would as much as I do since I changed over from a BMW. It drives a lot like a sedan, and it's sure-footed and reliable. The customer service has been great as well. The seats are comfortable and the road visibility is good. The rear seats are even more comfortable, and the giant moonroof is awesome. I also like the sports mode and the ability to manually shift gears - very useful for me and for saving on the brakes when going downhill. And the price? What a great value.
Beware
Bought a Subaru because I thought they were supposed to last forever. Everything was fine right up until the warranty ran out at 60,000 miles. Then brakes and exhaust needed replaced. Spark plug wires needed replaced. At 80,000 miles the head gaskets were leaking oil and needed replaced - $1,800. At 130,000 miles the transmission coolant lines into the radiator were rusted out and I had to replace the radiator and lines. Spark plug wires needed replaced again. At 165,000 miles the head gaskets were leaking again along with the transmission lines again, and it needed a catalytic converter, exhaust pipes and both mufflers. Estimate of over $7,200 to repair (and that is with a couple of hundred kicked in from the dealer). Needless to say, I have a very large lawn ornament now. Won't trust Subaru again.

Rattles like a Soviet-made piece of junk
After 6-7 months of research, I bought a new Forester 2.5X (basic). It is a compromise: will use it as a family car + getting to trail heads via back roads. After 3 weeks and 600 miles on asphalt, it started rattling at relatively low speed, like 20-40 mph. The last time I had a car rattle like this was when I was much younger - and it was a a small Soviet-made piece of junk, much different from a cute new Forester. The service department reduced the rattle but it is still there. They gave me a replacement Forester that rattled at least as loud as my own. The rattle completely spoils the joy one expects form a new car. In addition - relatively poor gas mileage in a city (we drive it gently)
