Great basic transportation
I have had my crosstrek for about four months now, I have the six speed manual premium addition. I think this vehicle should only be sold in manual. It’s slow I knew that upon purchasing it and anyone complaining about that should have realized that off the gate. It’s not horrible slow it’s just not a fast car. I love it it’s quirky like how Subaru used to be and it’s fun to drive. Only thing I will say is I have been driving manual for 15 years now Subaru manuals are a whole new world very touchy, but it takes like a day or two to get used to then you will be fine if you are an experienced standard driver.

Good Basic Subaru
As my title says... the base model Subaru Crosstrek is a good, basic car. We've owned several Subaru's previously - Foresters, and Outbacks - but this was the first Crosstrek. And if my wife would not have been involved in an accident, and our Impreza would not have been totaled, and we did not need a car RIGHT AWAY, we probably would have gone with a Forester. The Crosstrek is fine, but the base model is, well, a base model. The acceleration is the Crosstrek's worst feature, simply because there is very little. For highway driving, where you need to merge quickly into traffic, you need to find just the right window of opportunity, you can't just floor it. It is good in city/suburban driving though, and hopefully, it will be good in the snow. All in all, though, for a reliable, 'nice' car, the Crosstrek serves its purpose.

Loving Crosstec
Best SUV out there. I took some of the other SUV cars out for a test drive prior to purchasing my Crosstec Subaru and all I can say is it beat the competition hands down. Nothing handled has well or was as comfortable on the road. The fact that Subaru holds its value is a great plus has I plan on holding onto this vehicle for a long time. I've never had a vehicle that seemed to be so comfortable and hug the road that it makes driving even more enjoyable. I can't sing its praises high enough.

Bummed
The engine had to be replaced at 44000 miles. Then it was like dominoes falling- computer, radio, struts- I'm wondering what is left and where I will be when it fails. The dealer is fixing it, but the reason I buy new cars is for peace of mind which I have now lost. I might have gotten a dud because most Crosstrek owners haven't really had issues but my faith in the brand is gone.

First impressions
I've had the car for about a month. I have to dig hard to find complaints. I couldn't get the car's garage door remote to learn my garage door unless I used an actual remote clicker. Also, I understand that a problem with the factory holes for front license plates is Subaru-wide. The ones pre-drilled do not fit U.S. plates. It's not a big deal until you have to put on your permanent plates and learn the hard way (unless your salesperson gave you a heads up) that you have to buy a bracket separately. Other than that, it's been a great ride so far.

Excellent car - no regrets!
Bought our Subaru Crosstrek in December 2017. We'd had a 2004 Pontiac Vibe that just rolled over 100K miles, and while still in pretty good shape, didn't want to wait for its age to show (mechanical failure etc), hence our decision to go with the beautiful Sunshine Orange 2018 Crosstrek. And what a fantastic car it is! Overall, it drives like a dream, handling feels solid, brakes are great, and has a roomy and stylish interior. In our research, we'd read about the lack of acceleration, and put it to the test during the initial test drive and found that with its healthy 152 hp engine, there was really no problem with its rise to the challenge. (People need to remember, this is not a sports car, but one that is fully capable of taking what you can dish out.) What really sold us was the array of safety features that Subaru is well-known for, including the all-wheel-drive and airbags, among other things. I feel very safe during adverse weather - unlike my old car, I have never slipped or slid in heavy rain or snow/ice. We live in a hilly area, and needed something durable and reliable such as the Crosstrek. Very pleased with our purchase! The only real gripe here - and it is a minor one - was getting the onboard Android phone hookup to work properly. After some finagling with a few different cords, all worked out well.

2018 Crosstrek
This is my second Crosstrek. I bought the first one the first week they were being sold. My daughter is driving that one. This new model is even better. The ride and noise level have both been improved significantly. Not a fast car, but it keeps up with traffic. After having the car several months, I can say that it is not slow.

Owner for one year - Love it!
Love this car. Always drove smaller sedans, but decided to upgrade to a slightly larger car. This car was a great choice. Love that its not too big or long but still gives you that slightly higher driving perspective, sense of security and roomy interior. The AWD is a great plus and did well in its first winter in NY. Gas mileage not bad and I average about 31 mpg. Apple play is real nice to be able to put google maps on the screen in front of you. Less distractions and no dropping cell phones while driving. This is probably one of my favorite features of the car. Only minor thing I think its missing is a digital readout of your current miles per hour when driving.

Eyesight is a must - great vehicle
This is my first new car and it's been great so far! Extremely quiet ride, smooth yet solid suspension, and Eyesight is AWESOME! Keeps you in your lane, but will disengage if you resist at all and the adaptive cruise control is awesome. I love the premium trim, but the only thing I do wish I had are the LED headlights with steering response and auto highbeams. The boomerang Daytime Running Headlights look aggressive, but I can't stand the wheels that come with the Limited. I love that they got rid of most of the chrome, especially on the grill, and the wheels look great with black highlights. The major downside to this car is the acceleration. It's not awful by any means, but it would be nice to have a little more get up and go for getting on the highway. The zippiness and handling make up for this, though. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a versitile crossover with off-road capability, plenty of storage, and great tech.

Not a Subaru worshiper!
Well, we have had our 2018 Crosstrek Premium for about 4 months and 5000 miles. First the good. Overall its a good car, runs well, easy to see out of, lots of space for a smaller car, seems to shift ok with the CVT, gets good to great gas mileage, fit and finish seems good. The bad or questionable. NO SIRIUS radio on the premium package. I know, we knew that up front but the hassle of a separate radio unit with wires running to the center console is just plain stupid these days. I would gladly give up the paddle shifters for the built in radio. Why paddle shifter for a daily driver type car? The layout of the controls is confusing and not intuitive. The display of the gauges and lack of a digital speedo is also a drawback. Handling seems to be twitchy. I find myself over correcting with a very minor amount of steering wheel input. Probably a performance type thing like the paddle shifters but this is a daily driver not a road course competitor. Storage also seem to be laid out haphazardly with no thought to modern items like easy to access usb ports or large bins that are not odd shaped. Its hard to fit things in handy places. That being said it is a solid car and it's a Subaru. I'm hoping for a long productive life. Or If I get frustrated with no Sirius radio I will trade it for the next level. I guess "premium" isn't what it used to be!

Disappointing purchase
This is a very difficult vehicle for seniors to enter/exit. The 2.0 engine is under powered and the OEM tires so noisy on the freeway that I replaced them immediately. I have owned 2 previous Subarus (Foresters) with fantastic service life and I find their present offerings are living off their history. My new Crosstrek spent two weeks in the shop shortly after purchase while the service department struggled to solve a leak problem with the drivers side window. I am now in the process of attempting to sell a $32000.00 vehicle with around 2200 miles on the odometer at a huge personal loss. I will say the Eye Sight System works fantastic and is a great safety feature.

Great car, smooth ride, comfortable
The Crosstrek is a great little car with that reliable Subaru feel. Comfortable riding. A perfect size for the small SUV class. Power is OK, it could be increased, but in conjunction with the CVT transmission it is a very economical vehicle. Suspension seems to be adequate. Long distance rides have a smooth ride to it, good leg room. Can't wait to try this winter. Having the base model they really got cheap with it, no extra features that you get with some of the others in the same class. Technology always seems to be lacking in the Subaru's, there is only one power port hidden under in the center console. An auxiliary port in the center arm rest box (why there?). There are no additional USB ports or power ports that are useful. Only a single power port for the entire car! Nothing in the back seat area or in the cargo area. The only major complaint is the fact when you turn the car, a warning comes up on the radio, this prevents all controls from being used and if the music is a little loud, it is stuck till that way until the warning message goes away, 6 to 8 seconds sometimes. Wow! Overall, I really like the vehicle and would recommend it to anyone thinking of getting a small SUV.

First time Subaru owner
I just recently hit my 1500 mile mark since owning the car. The interior is great, has enough hatch space for my need, whether it’s groceries, or packing for a camping trip or going tailgating. Features of the car are great, love the eyesight, adaptive cruise control and the steering responsive headlights. The gas milage is amazing as well. The info system can be a bit touchy when connected via usb to a smartphone. While I know I did not purchase a sports car, the only issue I have with the car is it’s slow acceleration from a dead stop to about 25 mph. It makes crossing a highway or other situations where you need to get going quickly a little more frustrating. In and after 2nd gear the acceleration is as expected; not fast, but fast enough to pass on the highway of needed.

Third and last Subaru
The electronic steering on the highway over 50 mph has no feel of the road. It pulls the wheels on the slightest imperfection on the road. This makes the ride very uncomfortable and dangerous. Also, a/c blows hot air when getting on the parkway or when passing another vehicle. However, city driving was great and the reason I originally purchased the vehicle. Traded the vehicle in after only 6 months. The is car is gone at a great loss to me, notice the reviews are not as good on the newer cars anymore.

NOT starting x 2
6/11/2020 I probably will not find this site again. WE PURCHASED 8/4/18 the limited cross trek 2018, because the dash screen was about 2 inches BIGGER, and the unibody construction for safety. For the two of us it is just right, but does seem shy on acceleration, but does PRETTY well on hills. Our Honda crv just lugged down to almost stopping We have better gas mileage than the HONDA, and I feel if there is a problem, the service dept will take care of us, as well as Subaru. RE NOT STARTING: we have had two issues with this: 10/13 at 2500 miles. had moved the car from garage to driveway, came back in about 15 min, and WOULD NOT START , and the weather was sorta warm, and sunshine. I pushed the start button x3 with a clicking sound, all the dash lights lit up, and the dials for odom and tach turned abruptly to the right, and the green light was on the push starter, then nothing . It just would not started. Towed to Subaru and nothing found. . Then, today 12/4/18 , we had driven it to a parking area, about 1/2 hr later came out, and started, moved it about 10 min to another location, and in about 1 hr , and temp cool, the green light came on, and same thing all the lights on dash came on, the hands moved to the right but this time not a sound. Finally it did start. This time about 3600 mil. Service will see if there is a switch in the brake, or starter switch. When I called to the dealership , there was indication that with all the electronics the battery gets drained and needs some kind of boost. I have no clue what thaT means. If this continues is this a problem with the 2018, what do we do about it, and will Subaru buy it back. We drive about 50-75 miles a day, and gently. If this is a problem Subaru needs to evaluate and give us peace of mind. updated with capital letters today 6/11/2020 1. My wife is about 4 ' 8" and has trouble reading the peddles. I have addressed this Subaru, and they have noted it, but they need to take action. She can not reach the peddles in the 2019 models 2. Since my initial comments, we changed to a closer dealership, and get just as good a service 3. end of 2019 it was beginning to rain, came to a stop after the freeway, started up and heard a pop, not a car problem but something in the road. It hit on the left driver wheel bounced to the Right side and took out a triangle panel that is behind the wheel and attaches to the frame. Costly but had to be done as it could not be balanced 3. mileage about the same 4. The other day drove 17.6 miles, stopped for 10 min, and heard whir sound and then to a medial appointment. My wife said the lock unlock buttom on drivers side kept going off an stopped. The locking switch mechanism -actuator , I don't know was replaced under warranty soon after purchase, and about 6 months later the drivers door, after many trips to the dealership. I had returned to the car an realized the passenger side was not locked. 5. so far no big hiccups, easy to drive, but hard to wash with a rack 6. I woudl never buy a rack that is attached to the car with purchase and paid for. It turns out it was not a normal size and they had not cover that would fit. 7. We feel we have very safe car, pretty easy to drive. 8. I have had squeaks in the front seat, like the leather is dry where it means the side housing adjacent to the dor. UPDATE 12/12/2021 1. both front seat cushions and leather replace under warranty 2. back up camera with HEAVY rain, vision obliterated and you can not see to back up. NEEDS DIFFERENT ANGLE 3. heavy forest fire smoke the front eye sensors can not see at 20-200 feet, A SAFETY ISSUE the eye reports not working 4. HEATERS: two trips to dealership, noted about 5 miles from home, no heat, very little air flow at 69-70 temp , fan at level 2, and dash full arrows up and down traveled from downtown about 15 miles with no heat and no air flow Nothing could be found except replaced a valve returned couple weeks later, fiberoptic to vents, clear, symptoms travel 2-10 mile sometimes with heat at above settings, stop to do errand, start home no heat and very little air flow, and with hi heat and high fan some heat and air flow finally foreman took for drive discovered noise, motor behind the dash replaced, d/t making noise 5. We had to buy Continental tires and they are terrific but don't get fooled by the flat area on the inside of the tire that is normal 6. hood too high for my short wife 7. in winter we have had a sudden burst of windows steamed up and nothing would control to defrost 8. It seems we have had too many problems for this car, and the acceleration is still slow

I thought my Crosstrek was the best, but!
I purchased my 2018 Crosstrek Limited, new. It had 311 miles on it. I loved it. I thought it was probably the best car I owned. I loved the design, the power, the supposedly great mpg, etc. Then at less than 1000 miles the car stalled while merging into traffic. I noticed we got nowhere near the promised mpg. I was having to take it into the shop every month to have something replaced because of yet another recall. I was involved in multiple lawsuits not of my own making, where Subaru claimed they'd extend our warranty due to this problem or that problem. Then it suddenly started accelerating for no reason, the RPM gauge going into the red for no apparent reason. Suddenly the great all wheel drive which had been a very impressive thing in the begging began to fail, the car couldnt drive in a straight line. The MPG got worse and worse, probably due to the sudden acceleration that keeps happening. Sometimes I get less than 10 miles a gallon in this car, which is insane. I could keep going with everything that's gone wrong in this car, but the main issue is that Subaru cannot fix it. They can't figure out what's wrong. Because my computer crashes so often in this car it doesn't store engine codes the way it should so they can't figure out what is going on. My once dream car is now my worst nightmare. I'm scared to drive it and I've driven some clunkers in my day. I would steer clear from a 2018 Crosstrek. They're too expensive to be such a crappy recall prone car. I paid over $35000 for mine because it was fully loaded and supposedly the resale value was better on the Limiteds. Well that's a lie. If you really look into it, only the resale of Outbacks are high. The Crosstrek doesn't hold its value. The most recently estimate on resale I had recently, was $20k in perfect condition. I've had my car for a year and I've lost more than $15k in value and the interior and exterior is in perfect condition. Do your research before purchasing.

We LOVE it!!!
We absolutely LOVE this car...couldn't be any happier!!! We have a one-year-old and were looking for a car that was safe. All of our boxes were checked with the bonus of being able to go on family adventures anytime we like and we feel safe doing so. Thank you, Subaru!!!

Spunky little car, this is…
So, after 3 years of ownership, I can say I love this little car. Coming out of a Golf hatchback, you miss those 40+ HP/torques with this Crosstrek but the car makes up for it in eagerness to move. While hindered by a CVT, in daily commuter duty it’s inoffensive and isn’t much of a thought while driving. When pushed, the engine is a little buzz and can at times sound like a canal boat when the engine is being lugged, but overall this model year has a good solid engine and drivetrain. I have personally ditched the OEM tires after a spate of flats to BF Goodrich Advantage T/A all seasons and only notice a slight growl due to the more aggressive tread pattern and no real difference in fuel economy. I am averaging 27mpg in the city and I can get 35mpg on the highway doing 75+ And this car will cruise all day at this speed with nearly no effort. Mountainous roads or steep inclines will need to either flog the engine or use the paddle shifters to keep the transmissions fake gears in a higher rpm and ratio range for the climb. I have affectionately nicknamed my Crosstrek my little mountain goat. Sure footed and confident. Cargo capacity can sometimes be an issue, but that’s only when you’re Costco shopping with a lot of bulk items. Normal grocery runs will be no problem what so ever and brining 3 friends along with your adventures will all be in comfort thanks to ample head and leg room. My trim level is the Limited model without the Eyesight system or moonroof/sound system package. I have the upgraded 8 inch touchscreen stereo without embedded navigation. The system did require two upgrades via the dealer and improved the responsiveness of the UI. Apple CarPlay works wonders and voice recognition is superb. Upgrade to the Rockford Fosgate system, your music will thank you for the added bass and richer sound. The standard sound rom 4 speakers is good but wants for more. I have had a good number of recalls on the car, more than I can count. First model year of the redesign had some strange faults but the dealer did fix all of them, even when they had to perform them multiple times such as the ignition coil reprogram/replacement. One annoyance I have is the cars rather anemic sounding horn. Swap it out ASAP for something louder, at highway speeds I don’t think anyone can hear it. I’d complain the car is underpowered but Subaru has already addressed it by offering the 2.5 liter boxer engine as an option and standard on upper models. My car was before this upgrade and having been loaned a 2021 for a day, it’s worth it. It is what the car needed. 2023 review update: The car now has 45K on the odometer and still runs like a champ. No strange noises, no strange issues with the car, just an overall solid vehicle. The direct injection engine is prone to requiring a deep cleaning of the carbon build up, but once performed will solve any black cloudy-smoky rich start ups first thing in the morning. Fit and finish, the cars paint still looks great, living in the desert southwest it has resisted fading being in the direct desert sun. All panels are still rust free and no bubbles in paint. Interior is where I’ll start to have issues to note. The drivers side visor will not stay in its retracted to the ceiling position. It slightly moves down but stays put. An annoyance. Also, there is a tear in the leather seat on the drivers side bolster. Other than that, seats are still comfortable. AC and stereo still work, however I am getting a buzzing sound to my AC blower motor and a check at the dealer confirms it needs replacement $(400). Only one suspension part has worn out, sway bar end, and it was replaced ($279). Fuel economy is still fantastic. With automatic AC controls set for hot weather outside, 27 city, 37 highway is still observed. As for random options, steering responsive headlights are still functional and useful, X Mode is a help in sandy off road conditions, seat heaters are a must with the leather seats in winter, all weather floor mats are still holding up very well, remote start is also working as expected. In summary, I am still happy to call the 2018 Crosstrek my everyday vehicle. Ample room for 4 adults, comfy seats, all weather adventuring has never been so attainable and pleasing. It truly is the mountain goats of small suvs.

Superior Subie
Just purchased the new 2018 crosstrek limited with eyesight. So far it seems a wonderful car. Very safe, comfortable ride, and it feel very sturdy. We purchased this for my wife, and now I may be a big enough fan to trade I my beloved Tuscon and get a Crosstrek also! I think we are Subaru fans now.

My favorite of all my vehicles
I own several cars including a 2016 Toyota Highlander, 2016 Ford F150, 2016 Nissan Altima and the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. I often drive 400 miles (RT) to go skiing and my favorite car to take is definitely the Subaru Crosstrek. It's fun to drive, safe, great in the snow, quiet and absorbs the bumps really well and my favorite part is I can get 40 miles per gallon with highway driving. There's something simple, yet refined about this car that just makes it a pleasure to drive. I bought it for my son's primary use, but constantly "borrow" it from him to take to the mountains. My only wish is that I bought the color I wanted (flat blue) instead of the color the kids wanted. And I wish I had the leather seats since I have a dog that sheds and we like taking him with us. I agree with Edmunds the acceleration is not great, but it's sufficient. Was surprised to see Edmunds have something negative to say about the fuel economy - it's really impressive for an all wheel drive car - or any car for that matter.

Dream car turned nightmare
For years I drove a 98 Forester and loved it until one day the body rusted away from the frame. I always wanted a Crosstrek so I panic bought a brand new 2016. It was nice but didn't have all the features I wanted and I knew the redesign was coming for 2018. So after 1.5 years of having the 16, I custom ordered a 2018 Limited the moment I could. I got the car with 11 miles on it and it was amazing. The noise reduction from the engine between the 16 and 18 is incredible. Eyesight and adaptive cruise control really are lifesavers. MPG was amazing (between 36 and 37 city driving). As you can imagine, since I custom ordered the car, I took the best care of it I could but after a year of ownership, the nightmares started. I discovered several paint chips (already rusting) on my hood and by the pillars along the windshield. Took it to the dealer only to be told I must have done it somehow. First they claimed it was my snow brush, the same one I've used for 7+ years on 3 other cars without issue. Then they said I must have laid some lumber on it and scraped it up (impossible based on the angle of the chips) and quoted me $2k to fix it. I wrote Subaru and they very generously covered the cost and repainted the damaged areas. 1.5 years later, I have 0 new chips in those areas so I'm convinced I received the car with those chips and unfortunately didn't notice them right away. Over the next 1.5 years, it's had 5 recalls and a list of other problems: 1. The main being with Apple CarPlay. I use it for navigation when I travel and it would randomly crash. Crash as in, completely closed my navigation and cleared my directions on my phone. I'd have to pull over, retype the address, and start again. Sometimes it would work for 5 minutes, the next it would be over an hour. Took it to the shop 5 to 10 times, always to be met with "No one else is reporting this, can't reproduce it on command, we can't do anything." They had me try different ports, different cables, and a different phone, and it would always crash. Finally, I took it in and a different mechanic was there who tried his Android phone and it crashed instantly. They determined it was the USB port, replaced it under warranty and I haven't had an issue since. 2. Fan blower would randomly make a high pitched whirring sound when the heater was on. One of those decibels that would slowly drive you insane. They did replace that under warranty without much issue. 2a. After having the blower replaced, there's been 2 times the blower didn't turn off even though the temperature control was completely off. No amount of turning the heater off/on fixed it. The next time I drove the car, it seemed fine so not sure about this one yet. 3. Before a trip, I had my brakes checked and paid for a "Brake Safety Maintenance" (~$70) to clean some rust off my brakes. Soon after, my brakes started making a weird noise. I took it back in and they said a piece of rust fell off while driving and not to worry about it. Just under 2 months later, my brakes started making a terrible sound after braking going down a hill. Turns out both my front rotors had de-laminated and were replaced under warranty. I rarely drive my car (work from home), so I am unsure how my brakes went bad that quickly, especially since I just had the "Safety Maintenance" done. 4. Keyfob and remote start batteries died after about 2 years. I know this is a small issue but still annoying. As I said before, I rarely use the car and the average keyfob battery life is 3 to 4 years. Also fixed under warranty. 5. MPG is now down to 32-33 with the same tires it came with. No changes in my driving style either so not sure where that 3-4 mile loss comes from. I'm quite positive I've forgotten something for this list. I've been in the shop at least once a month over the past year. Something I think shouldn't be the case when a car is less than 3 years old. Other general complaints are the cabin and trunk size. It's great for getting groceries but that's about where the list ends. My golf bag barely fits without doing this weird angle/dance with it or putting the seats down. Forget about trying to fit anything larger in the car (like a washing machine). It also severely lacks power and you can really notice when you have a few passengers or some weight in the back. Maybe my expectations were too high, I just got a bad car, or other peoples cars haven't started revealing it's issues yet but I am not sure how this car has such high ratings. I can officially say this will be my last Subaru for a while.

Excellent for an old man
The car is very tight ,plenty of power , excellent handling, just works well. I am 74 and find it an excellent stable mate for my large suv. When out and about in Northern Pa hills I find I take it rather then my larger Pilot. It may be the best car I have ever had and that is a lot. Driven it 6500 miles over 8 months.

Not powerful enough, air conditioning awful
I owned a 2005 Outback for 12 years. Wish I’d kept it! This Crosstrek gets great milage but you give up a ton of power. I bought in cool weather but now that summer is here I find that the air practically shuts of at traffic lights or when accelerating. Not much better than my daughters old Honda Fit as far as the air and power goes. Take it out on a hill and try passing someone before you buy if you are used to a more powerful car. I’d give up the milage if I’d done more research. I’m glad I leased and I can get rid of it in 2.5 years. Never thought I’d say that about a Subaru. Update- after 1 1/2 years. Still the power/air issue of course, I’m averaging around 32 mpg in normal driving (more on road trips) and that’s great milage for AWD. I’ve driven several different SUVs in the last few months and ALL except mine have had power lift gates. This is another thing Subaru hasn’t done so far. Still not planning on keeping this car or buying another Subaru at this time.

Low powered piece of clunk
We’ve had the crosstrek for the past year and we still talk about how poorly the car is built. I always liked Subaru, but this will be the last subaru I would buy. The acceleration is horrible and I can’t easily pass cars or merge into traffic with this car. The mileage is 21 or 22 mpg, in the city and nowhere close to the 28-32 range. The car drives ok and the gears switch noisily and almost grinding as I try to drive uphill. The drive has improved from the beginning, but still not the best. The steering felt loose in the beginning, but now we are used to it. I really do not understand why people give 5 star ratings to this car. The only good thing about this car is the cornering. It drives well in corners especially in a rain due to all wheel drive. It does feel safe during a rain storm and the car doesn’t slide. The radio turns on automatically when the car starts which is annoying. Plastic parts seem to come loose in the driver area and I am not sure what it’s for. Styling is poor and you can even see wires hanging out from the rear view mirrors. Overall I would not recommend this car. There is a cult following and people seem to love their Subaru, but I am not sure why. I want to sell this car and get something with better fuel efficiency and power for Texas roads. I used to work for an American car company and I feel some of their lower priced cars are better than this crosstrek.

Seriously? You don't trust us with the radio?
I am just getting used to my 6-speed manual Crosstrek. Apparently, there is no shut off for the radio. Dealer tole me to just turn the volume all the way down if I didn't like having the radio turn on immediately upon starting the car. NO POWER OFF FOR THE RADIO. Are you kidding me? I traded this cr in. I did not like the pick up on the manual transmission. I cringed when merging on highways.

Can't decide whether I love it or hate it
I love the look of the car. I love the interior. It handles great in the Colorado snowy winters and I love the 'sunshine orange" color. The leasing company gave me a great deal. However, it only has 4 cylinders (I didn't realize that meant less power and pick up than my old car.) But the real issue is the stereo. The CD player adds 2 second pauses between tracks no matter how the CD is formatted. Try listening to symphonic pieces/jazz/operas/jam bands/live bands with that setting. It kills the flow of the music. I've called the hotline about this, visited the dealership several times, and emailed several people and keep getting either a blatant disinterest or a chipper "That's just a feature of your stereo." And my iPod can't be played on my USB jack either. If you love music, bring a CD with you when you test drive the car! Also, the stereo stays on after you turn the car off so I've left the car running more than once. Lastly, it has too many safety features and beeps and alerts but I turned them all off. My next car will be a 1970 Chevelle!

!
The Subaru Crosstrek is a safe, reliable vehicle. I got it in Red, got the fully equipped Limited because I do not want to have to buy a new car for 10 plus years. The whole car buying experience was a nightmare, and I did my research mainly online. Three months later I am still getting e-mails and phone calls from dealers. I bought the Crosstrek because it has a good, solid reputation and I will not need to subject myself to car sales people for at least 10 years!! It is a beautiful car. I love the heated seats, wish it had a heated steering wheel. Overall the car is a genuine pleasure to drive. It has plenty of speed when needed, with ample cargo room. I do wish I got better mileage. I would highly recommend the Crosstrek. I think I look absolutely fabulous in my venetian red Crosstrek!!

Still Love It,...after 1 full year
I loved this car right after I purchased it and still love it after one year and 16,500 miles. I drive this aggressively in town and on the highway and NEVER lack for power. I came from a V6 and V8 sedan and suv respectively and cannot understand what others complain about with power. I live in the suburbs of Chicago and have no problem merging in traffic or passing cars. Yes, from 0 to 60 miles per hour it is no race car, but once you are driving from 30 to 75 miles per hour, no problem. This car is amazing in the rain or snow plowing though the bad roads. Excellent on MPG with 25-27 in town and 36 to 39 on highway. After driving this car for a year, I continue to enjoy it and would highly recommend it to anyone. The interior is the best and recommend the 8" screen on the limited model. I have the black leather and love it, but also liked the all black cloth in some I test drove. Accessorizing this think is a blast,...2" hitch for bikes, cross bars for roof box and window deflectors all useful and make this car more fun. One of my most favorite cars ever!

Not Impressed with the car quality
We bought the 2018 Crosstek brand new, but had problems from the time we had it. After 1 year (2019) we had the car service by dealership and told us we had to buy a new battery as the original battery does not charge. Since the car was out of warranty due to mileage (my son drives it to the Thompson, MB as he works there). Then after a year again last December 2020 the car won't start again, we brought it back to dealership and now they said the Alternator needs to replaced and battery. We paid a total of $1100. I know the car is out of warranty but my point is the Alternator was a DEFECTIVE PART from the get go and should have been replaced at no cost. I thought Subaru pride itself with building reliable and quality cars, I am totally DISAPPOINTED and will never go back to a Subaru.

Wait, what a Subaru not getting a PERFECT SCORE
Yes, that is correct. This car, although practical is NOT comfortable at all. The seats are hard as a plank of solid wood. For city commuting its ok, but for a road trip NO WAY. It has no lumbar support to boot. The back seats are no better. I cant wait for this lease to be over. Gas mileage is not what Subaru advertises. Im lucky to get 19-20 mpg in the city. On the highway I got 28 mpg.

Do Not Buy a Crosstrek!
The infotainment system does not work. Even after a firmware update. Bluetooth fails to connect reliably. USB is better, but still flakey. The $70 Pioneer Bluetooth stereo system connects to every peripheral I have. 80gb hard drive Ipod? No problem. Ipod shuffle, easy. Bluetooth from 3 different phones, no problem whatsoever. Subaru's Harmon Kardon system? Nope. No older Ipod. Ipod shuffle? Barely. Bluetooth? Ha ha ha ha. Half the time the stereo just says hands free loading. Pathetic. Remember, this system is integrated into the car. It's not as easy as a quick replacement. I got a huge run around from the tech at the dealer in Prescott. Telling me that there were no problems with the stereo, and the update was not that big of a deal. The entire unit has been shutting off completely for some people. Safety issue there. Especially if it affects the adaptive cruise control if your car is so equipped. Read the other reviews. Research the class action lawsuit being brought about people being out of a infotainment system for months. Next, the horrible top out of the suspension. A bang so loud you think a gun went off. Nope, just an "offroad capable" car having a suspension system that was not designed to ever have the tire drop out from under the car (think big hole) with scaring the life out of you. Not a great thing while trying to concentrate on the road.

Solid
SUBARU cars are not flashy but functional. A little spendy compared to other compact mini SUV on the market. But safety, handling, and reliability are above average. May be the limited could have come with more gadgets. The 2018 is rides well. Seats are ok for short term use but most cars are like that, except Volvo seats.

Okay, but...
My 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Ltd. is so cute and rugged-looking, but after a mere 11 months, the Starlink system has malfunctioned twice, resulting in my having to do a factory reset to it, and completely locked up once, not allowing me to adjust the radio, use the navigation, or use anything on it. Dealership can't replicate the problem, so therefore can't fix it, but tried doing a reset on the entire vehicle, that also didn't help. I also don't like that the locks don't lock automatically once the vehicle is in motion or upon putting it in drive. Come on now... This is 2018-9! Cargo cover is VERY difficult to get in and off. After only 17 months in my lease, I'm really hesitating keeping this.

Terrible
This is the noisiest and most uncomfortable CUV's I've ever driven. I just ended my three-year lease on a 2018 Crosstrek Limited with Eyesight, and my lease couldn't end soon enough. The engine noise and road noise inside this car are almost unbearable. It's so loud its almost impossible to have a conversation with someone inside the car with you. The only way you can hear the radio while driving is to turn the volume all the way up because road noise is so loud. For a dainty four-cylinder engine, I don't understand why it's so loud. In the hot summer, when I would have the Crosstrek idling in my driveway with the A/C on to cool down the inside of the car for a few minutes, or in the winter with the heat on for a few minutes, I could hear the engine from inside my house. It sounded like an airplane was in my driveway. The seats are extremely uncomfortable. Front seats and back seats are very thin and offer no support. It's like sitting on cardboard. Anytime I drove for more than 30 minutes my legs and back would be in pain. The seats are also terrible quality. I'm 5'6 150lbs, and after three years of light driving (I only put 16k miles on it during my three-year lease) the driver seat looked like it had been driven for 100k miles. Subaru Eyesight is a joke. The system would disable every time there was heavy rain or snow, which is when I needed it the most! I regret paying extra for the Limited model with Eyesight. Other major annoyances about the Crosstrek are the embedded navigation - It's terrible. It could never find half the addresses I would look up in NYC. It always pinned my home address in the incorrect location, like five blocks away from where my house actually is. I can't even tell you how many times the complete center console system froze up on me while driving. None of the screen functions would work, so I'd have to pull over to turn my car off and then wait at least 20 minutes for the system to shut down and then restart my car. You can't switch between radio station presets and SiriusXM presets and there's only like 12 total presets allowed. No power liftgate on this CUV, it's not even an option. A power liftgate is standard on pretty much every other CUV out there. No rear vents for A/C or heat for your back seat passengers. No dual-zone climate controls for front seat passengers. All-weather rubber floor mats slide all over the footwells. There is nothing that keeps the rubber floor mats securely in place. No remote start option. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Why would Subaru put paddle shifters on the Crosstrek? This ain't a sports car. City driving gas mileage is not great. No auto-locking doors when you shift into drive, or drive above a certain speed limit. Too many other annoyances to list. I do not recommend the Crosstrek. If you're paying close to 30k for a new CUV then there are much better options out there that offer more safety, comfort and convenience options that you just can't find on the Subaru.

3 years later - still think highly of this car.
The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek was my first Subaru experience, and after 3 years of ownership I continue to be impressed with it's safety, comfort and fuel economy Too bad I designated it to be my son's car, because I'm always having to ask him if he needs the car. The Crosstrek is easy to navigate in crowded parking lots, and practical enough to take on a road trip. My trips up to the mountains and back have netted just under 40 mile per gallon! The car is quiet and the stock stereo sounds very good. Yes, the acceleration is on the slow side, but it's really not bad unless you're the type who wants to race someone onto the freeway - I'm guessing most Subaru owners aren't the type. Lastly, the safety features including the eye sight, blind spot monitoring and the fish eye lens back up camera really help you feel safe. I've already avoided a rear end collision thanks to the eye sight feature that will help you break when coming upon a sudden stop in traffic. Recently I added a tow hitch so we can attach a bike rack. In 3 years I'm happy to report I've only had to change the oil 3 times - twice by myself - the placement of the oil filter helps make it easy. My one regret is the my Crosstrek was not made here in the US. With that said, I am a very happy Subaru owner.

Indepth Road Test
Overall, the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is an outstanding vehicle. Tight build quality inside and out; excellent fuel economy. Very comfortable interior, excellent safety features. I do not agree with the Edmunds review regarding slow acceleration; seems plenty peppy to me (perhaps less so with a full load on); I also disagree regarding handling; seems very crisp and precise to me - in fact, it was one of the first things I noticed about the vehicle - handling was very impressive compared to other vehicles in it's class that I test drove. I have driven this vehicle over 20,000 miles in town, over highways and in mountainous regions, with no complaints. My review has four stars rather than five because of three minor, but annoying issues. First, despite all of the safety features in this vehicle, the doors do not automatically lock (the vehicle that I traded for the Crosstrek doors locked at 5 mph). This is safety 101 in my opinion. Can't believe Subaru left this out. Second is the sound system, which is nothing special - passable at best. Glaring omission is the fact that is no CD player. At this price point, you get cheap about a single disc cd player??? Finally - again - the sound system. The radio automatically comes on when you start the vehicle - extremely annoying!!! If I want the radio on, I'll do it myself, thank you. Minor annoyances aside, the Crosstrek has been a highly reliable, versatile, well built vehicle. Update: November, 2019: It's been 36K miles now. Other than routine maintenance, there have been no problems at all. My biggest gripe remains the sound system, which SUCKS! And no CD player. And the baloney of automatically coming on remains extremely annoying!

Reliable
I love this car - it is dependable, roomy enough for my needs, and I have had no mechanical problems. I drive A LOT! I have 135,000+ miles in 3 years. Handles great is snow and on inclines. My only complaint: loud cabin noise, especially when using the Bluetooth phone.

Good but some faults
Overall, my 2018 Crosstrek is a good vehicle. The power is a little weak as has been commonly noted. But this is fine with 36-37 MPG on the highway to make up for it. The annoying problems are electronics. The radio is always on when you start the car. Turn the radio off and it still comes on when you restart the car. And with all the "Love" and safety advertising the DOOR LOCKS DO NOT LOCK WHEN YOU DRIVE OFF. There are no settings for this. An incredible oversight. This would be a deal breaker next time. Update three years out: The Crosstrek continues to be good overall, but the electronics remain annoying. The latest is sometimes the alarm will come on when you unlock the doors using keyless entry. And a radio update. Not only does it come on when you start the car {when it was turned off}, if you are using a usb key with recordings it defaults to the radio on start up. The dealer also sells Chrysler products so they must assume that all cars are junk and unfixable. No more Subarus - back to Honda and Toyota.
