If you want a reliable car, go Saturn

I purchased my Saturn in '97 used with around 68,000 miles on it. I'm not one to keep up on regular maintanance but the car performed great anyway. Fun to drive! If I wanted to pass someone on the road, I just dropped down a gear and was gone! Many "fender benders" that would have been costly if not for the dent-free body. Ran the car from NC to OH with the oil cap off (unknowingly) and the car never skipped a beat. The most reliable car I've owned.

Super Car for the Money

1995 Saturn S-Series SW2 4dr Wagon

Very reliable, inexpensive to own and operate, great in snow, slush, and ice. This is one of the best looking wagons on the road, and is much less expensive to own than any Honda I have known. Here in central Maine, at the foot of the Maine Mountains, this car has been a great car all four seasons.

My only new car was a dud!

I loved the concept of Saturn. These were supposed to be smartly designed cars with some revolutionary concepts like plastic siding that was resistant to dings. I also liked the idea of a low flat sticker price that was non-negotiable. I started out a fan and was tempted to drive to the annual Saturn picnic. I'm glad I didn't. The car probably would have broken down on the way. Of all the cars I could have chosen to be my first new car, this was about the worst choice I could have made. Almost immediately, the drivers side window would drip on me as I drove. I took the car in multiple times for this and they never resolved the issue. Apparently, they had removed the rain gutters this year and it presented a design flaw. The car also burned oil like a maniac right from the start. The thing was gutless too, although it did get pretty good gas mileage. It finally blew a head gasket at around 80,000 and I traded it in for a used car. I don't think I got more than a few hundred for it.

Beware of Defect!! Flawed Engine Block!!

Saturn released defective engine blocks that resulted from a flawed casting mold, and that may result in a cracked cylinder head if you are one of the unlucky ones. DO NOT BUY A SATURN FROM 1994-1996!! What's worse is that Saturn did not notify consumers of the defect until 3 years after the defect was discovered. They did come back and provide a warranty for the defect up to 100K miles, but this is not the carburetor we're talking about here; it's the heart and soul of the car . . . THE ENGINE!! My cylinder head cracked at 130K - I've heard from many others who have experienced the same problem. Run away!

Bought this 95 Saturn SL2 used from a local dealership in 1999 for $5000.00 and it is the best money I ever spent on a used car. I drove the car myself for about 2 years before my eldest child got her license, then she drove it before it was passed down to my youngest. Other than maintenance, really haven't had to spend too much money on it. Unfortunately, my youngest son drives this car like he's Michael Andretti and hasn't been the best with regular oil changes and now the engine is shot. But this car has been so reliable and economical/efficient to drive he's looking to replace it with another Saturn..sure hope he's learned his lesson about regular upkeep/oil changes!
