Runs like a Top!
I've owned the convertible for twelve years, bought it used in '99. I love it but it's starting to show its age. I've had it repainted and put a new roof on it. But it survived three accidents, two front and one side very well. It's a very heavy car but it has always had brake problems. It just doesn't want to stop and the brakes on the back wheel lock up. The car also leaks and the resulting water has destroyed the gauges. The air conditioning now has a leak and doesn't work but what do you want for a car that's 20! And it still runs really well. I know it will get me where I am going .
It just keeps puttering along
I love this car. It has lasted for the past eighteen years and it has no problems what so ever. it performs well in all weather and I love the color. I hope that it can last another 20.
Great Buy
ive had my sunbird for about a year now, and it has yet to break down on me. it is my first car, and i would not trade it for any other model out there. it had a problem when you would accelerate it would bog down but it was a simple fix by buying a new air regulator. the interior isnt the best but an easy fix. the engine is BEAUTIFUL! soon i will be swapping it out though for a new Turbo. I love how this car is very customizable. their is a couple ground effects kits that i look forward to buying. i have installed new audio, wheels, bass, undercar lights. this car is totally reliable if you dont mind paying a little bit here and there. also if you have the time its a great buy.
miss this car
Bought my red LE two door with the 3.1 V6 and a 5 speed trans. Got good gas millage with it. Always 26 minimum. The car died in 2001 with 174000 miles on it. The body was rotting away. The trans had a bearing going. The engine blew a head gasket. I drove it for 10 miles with no water. Amsoil kept it going. Cracked the block. I junked it. Only thing I did was maintenance, brakes, tires and all 6 fuel injectors. As the car got older, it got better mileage. When it died, it was getting 33 to 35 just driving around. I miss that car.
Sunbird satisfied owner
My 'bird Gt has treated my well it has 170000miles on the original motor with no rebuilds. It doesnt burn oil and still beats new cavaliers and sunfires and almost any honda. The fuel millage is ok. The ride it rough, but i love driving this car. The 3.1 5speed combo is great.
Worst Car that I have ever driven
I bought it at a police auction for $500, but was a huge mistake. I had to tear apart the engine and replace the crankshaft, a piston, bearings and head gasket. A year later the car started smoking and I had to get new valve seals. A couple of months later the oil light kept coming on and I had to bring it into a shop to find the problem. The oil sensor was bad and the part was $10, but the labor was over $200. Two months ago when I came home for the summer, the engine started making a high pitched scraping sound. I had to replace the timing belt tensioner and there was no more noise.

Best car to own.....
not reliabile
I got my poniac because I really liked the outside look!!! I have had my 91' poniac 2 door coupe for about a year 1/2 now and i have to say I haven't had any major problems, but i constantly keep having minor problems. I never can go far because I never now if it will make it there and back!!! I have had problems with the fuel intake, running hot, battery cord, fan doesn't want to kick on, airconditioner fan doesn't blow, can't unlock the left door, radio doesn't work, and a whole bunch of interior problems-lights never want to turn off and cheap, cheap, quality inside!!!
It Won't Die
I purchased this sunbird with 154,000 miles and it still runs extremely strong with 164,000. I don't take it easy either. Everytime drive freeway over 90 passing everyone and has great pick-up! Regular maintence throughout cars life is the culprit for performance. Great look to car, real sporty in appearance. Only complaint is that I'm having brake problems, but very understandable for age. Only dissapoint is that I never got as my first car.
snubird gt 1991
i baught my 91 sunbird gt in 1991 i like it verry much espechaly the 3.1 engine lots of power :) i put 4shocks and 1alternator in this car since i had it now i have 213 000km on it and it stil does 120mph :P the only thing i dont like on my car is the interior design its poor
Gardner Sunbird
This has been a great car. Its been treated well and its payed me back. Never any problems. Car remains original with exception of top/tires/ belts etc.
I love it...
It's an overall great car. If I could actually afford to fix the couple of problems with it, I would be able to keep it for a long time. But how things are going now, it seems like be searhing for a new car in a few years.
Pontiac Conv. fun to drive
Note: I owned a 1991 V6 sunbird convertible, these come stock with 4 bangers so it performed better obviously. I loved this car, I would've never given it up, but was forced to when someone ran a stop sign and totalled it. Very nice car though I miss it.

Power yes!! Reliability no!!
This car is great fun to drive, but it seems like every time I would go for a rode trip it would break down. At 195,000 km I've gone through 5 alternators, 3 starters, 2 set's of shocks, a water pump and many other things are just falling apart.
181k miles and still running great!
I met my wife that time she had that car. I used this car driven daily. I currently have 181,000 miles on it. common maintenace, replace waterpump and timing belt twice in same year. interior design was good, but there's a flaw on igniton, gets stuck, would not able to take key out. at 174k short on wiring to wipers and headlight, when lights turned on, wiper washer goes off. interior light stop working, but overall itis reliable, as long taking care of it, change oil, etc.
Loved my First car! Had it 17 years!
I loved everything about this car. If I could have kept it I would have, but it was slowly falling apart, such as the vinyl. But certainly something to not complaint about considering it's very sporty design (interior/exterior), terrific dependility, the best fuel mileage (upwards to 48 mpg) I thought it was comfy until I drove my second car, a BMW 5 series. Even though I didn't 'need' my Sunbird, I kept it because of the great gas mileage and total efficiency. It was totally fun to drive when I go it eons ago, and still very fun to drive up til I gave it away.
Excellent car for the price
I bought this car for $200 in summer 09 and subsequently spent another $1000 on parts to get it in a more reliable running condition, and put new tires on it today. This car is pretty fun to drive, its small and easy to park, has great acceleration when you need it, sporty gear selector if you shift down past drive. For a car that's 17 years old it has held up remarkably well. Mine is the White color, and has no oxidation to speak of. Some rust where the door meets the frame, but that's about it. I'm very satisfied.
Lots of problems
This has been the most unreliable I have ever owned. The thing shakes, rattles and groans. Always ahs something that needs to be fixed. But, when I put the top down, all is forgiven. Ride is horrible and power is low for a V-6. Seats are uncomfortable.
Old sunbird V6 vs. New sunfire V4?????
Does anyone know the horsepower in the '92 Pontiac Sunbird with the V6, 3.1L? I am trying to compare the new (2002) Pontiac Sunfires ecotech engine (4 cylinder, 2.2L 140 horsepower) with my Pontiac Sunbird with a V6, 3.1L Thanks a bunch!
Dependable Workhorse
I purchased my Sunbird new in 1992. This car was primarily driven to and from my place of work in heavy traffic conditions. It's fuel injected four cylinder engine coupled with a five speed manual transmission provided plenty of power and made driving fun. I replaced the altenator on two occassions and the timing belt once. I still own this vehicle after eleven years of solid service. It still gets great gas mileage and looks great.
For the most part, very good!
Bought it with 16K mi in near perfect condition. Sideswiped in an accident, and it was never the same again. After a series of inept body and engine mechanics, 60K miles, and the accident, it's so-so. Body is still fine. Engine, with the proper plugs, is pretty good. Before the accident, I LOVED it!!! Except for the seats. Not too comfortable for long drives. Okay for highway driving, otherwise mileage isn't great, but it's pretty heavy. OTOH, if it weren't heavy, I'd probably be dead. My big lesson - find a GOOD mechanic. One that doesn't know what he's doing will ruin your engine.
SINCE NEW
I'VE HAD THIS CAR SINCE NEW AND HAVE ONLY HAD TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH AT 88000KMS. IT'S DROPPING A LITTLE BIT OF OIL NOW BUT THAT'S UNDERSTANDABLE SINCE IT HAS 140000KMS ON IT. IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL 4 BARREL EXHAUST PIPES. HANDLES WELL AND WILL STILL OUTPACE, OUTSTART MOST OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD. CAME WITH A 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANE, V6 3.1 DOHC. SPORT PACKAGE.
Very Nice Inexpensive Transportation
My Father in Law bought this car used in '92 and had NO TROUBLE at ALL with it. I inherited it with 100,000 miles and have put an additional 36,000 on it. It sat for about a year before I got it and I replaced the timing belt, alternator and the rear axle. (was sagging, we figure it was fatigue from sitting so long. Was only $500 including labor) Has been a great little car, great on gas and has never failed me ... use it to drive 300 mile round trip once a week and around town. Rides a little rough and suspect it could use shocks but at 136,000 miles it's un
Sunbird = bang for buck
If you're looking for a car to have fun with the 'Bird is it. Shares many parts with the Cavalier, and you can find parts for them anywhere! Everything's straightforward and easy to work on
Poor workmanship
Car started having problems 3 months after purchase. It had 28,000 miles on it when bought and by 40,000 miles it needed a new tranny and had a blown head gasket. The interior was poorly designed as it was constantly coming apart. Driving was fair at best with a 2.0 4 cyl engine that had no power and it had very uncomfortable seats.
Average all around
This was my first car, and it was already 8 years old when I got it. It served its purpose until I blew all the head gaskets. At the ripe age of 16, didn't know you had to maintain a car with oil and water.

Wonderful car to drive in Florida and for the summer
I loved this car
This is the best car that I've ever owned. Wow, I wish that I had hung onto this one - nice reliable ride in a solid car. Good looking too!
