Why get something more expensive
I have driven a Nissan Altima and a Nissan Maxima which I still own. These 2 cars have proven to be very reliable while they offered a lot more options for the money (more value). I don't understand people who buy a Honda Accord instead of a Maxima. They probably don't do their homework before buying. For me and my family it is Nissan...nothing else. And to prove my point, my son just purchased his first car...a brand new Nissan Sentra EX R which he chose above such competitors such as Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Tiburon.
Maxima is good
I bought this new and have been VERY pleased with it. I had the Check Engine soon light go on early in its life and they replaced some warranty part, all else went well until recently. Air bag light went on, spent $34 and found that there was no problem. The check engine light went on again and I ignored it and has since turned off. No other issues. I just replaced the Michelins
99 Nissan Maxima SE Limited
I have really enjoyed my Maxima. It's got one of the best, if the not the best V6 there is (or was in 1999). I've only had minor problems with it. These problems were: Air Blower in car makes a whistling noise, drivers seat creaks a little, and the micro-chip keys can be erased if put on the counter in a store like Target or Walmart (which then requires a tow($75)and key re- coding at Nissan($40). I never had any major problems. Overall, it's a great car that I'm going to keep even after it's paid off.
mostly a great car
I bought this because I got a good deal on it. It has been a great car overall. I have had only a few problems that seem to be common for this car. I had the Oxygen sensor go out at 40,000 mi., tires prematurely needing replaced at 25,000 mi., and my cd player is dead. Not bad compared to most cars. I just got spoiled with my Toyota that I had previously.
Maxima SE 5-spd
Bought my SE 5 spd for a steal. $13,500 and it looks brand new. BOSE system is great. Big, easy-to-use knobs/buttons. My 1993 SE (209,000 miles w/ original clutch!) had the BOSE but its faceplate was half the size. Auto climate makes you wonder what you ever did w/o it. Leather is in great shape and two power seats is what you usually see only on high-end luxo cars. I wish Nissan had opted for a built-in antenna. The power antennaes always seem to develop a problem. I agree with the previous post...the SE is a BMW 5-series for a lot less money. I'll check back in when my 1999 duplicates my 1993 and crosses the 200k mile mark!
Great car for your money
I have purchased the car a year ago.I have 34000 miles on it, and I drive this car to it's limits everyday, very fast, and very harsh. The whole time I owned this car, the only problem I have is with the gears on the car, are always late on shifting, other than that the car has not given me any problems, and is very fun to drive.
O2 sensors are a pain
Bought it in 02 when it came off a lease. I put new BF Goodrich tractions on last year. Even at 6 years old, its fun to toss around. The standard 120 watt stereo(made by Clarion for Nissan) is nowhere near the BOSE but is OK. Dealer service was great. Glad I bought the extended warranty as I've replaced two O2 sesors and need a third already.
This was a god choosen car 4 me!!!
I looked all over for the perfect car around $10,000 and this was god's answer to my prayers. This car has room, power, looks, and class. Every chance i get i want to drive it but on the other hand, i don't want to put a ton a miles on it. This was the only car that had an awesome rating (along with the subaru sti). So my advice to anyone looking, find on that has be taken go care of and enjoy it until the wheel s fall off!!! Remember i prayed for the perfect this car!!!!!!
Still Strong
I've been driving this car for 30k miles per year for 5years and I have only done the brakes twice and have replaced the clutch at 80k. It's really and ideal car for the type of driving that I do, and it still looks good when it's cleaned up. I'll sell this to my niece next fall and she willquite likely get another 50k out of it before any major maintanence is required.
Mad about Maxima
I always look forward to driving this car. I love the way it handles. I joke around about this car wanting to take a road trip because it feels like it's anxious to go! Am amazed at how quiet the engine is while idling. Plus, I love the body style. I think I'm in love!!
Its ok
I bought this vehicle used in 2003. with 43,000 miles on it. Its the SE model and it has every option in it. Very good V6 smooth till this day amazing! I have changed the brakes, tires, coils, spark plugs, alt., AC compressor, belts, and I'm probably gonna end up bringing it in again for coil wires or something with the xpark plugs because the car shakes bad when accelerating. But overall I love the car, I just gotta keep taking care of it.
Good Car!
This was my second Nissan Maxima SE. I had no problems with the vehicle. I truly recommend it. I only had to replace the brakes, tires, and battery once. Very good car. I am looking to sell it now and buy a new one.
Cheap original parts
I am the original owner, soon to be 4 years. The car is good, no questions about it. Main source of the problems - cheap and low-quality original parts that owner is responsible for. Tires wore out in 30K, clutch in about 48K of highway driving!!! A lot of people I know have the same problems: Nissan produces Maxim cheaper by pushing extra maintenance over owners. Beware!!!
RELIABLE CAR, MINOR MECHANICAL PROBLEMS
my experience with this vehicle so far has being very good. no major mechanical problems; except for a "Bad COIL" that caused the check engine light to appear in the instrument panel. transmition feels very smooth no problems there. noise ratio outside to inside very good.
Top Notch Car
I bought this car in 2006 with 150,000K and I now have 190,000 with virtually no problems. Replaced the struts and the starter but other than those repairs the car has been fantastic.
Great Car
My 1999 Nissan Maxima is a great car. I bought it about two years ago and have not regretted it. I had the notorious problem with the coil packs at about 68,000 miles along with the knock sensor. Those repairs cost me about $1,300 and recently I had to replace all four tires again and replace the front struts because of a front-end issue which cost me about $1,200. For some reason the car eats tires but its most likely due to my driving habits. Driving the car is still a pleasure. It has quiet road manners and excellent performance. The engine is still quiet and serene, but will rocket off at your command. Just replace the oil when your supposed to and use premium gas and the Maxima will not dissapoint.
99 Maxima GXE 5 speed
Bought this car new in 1999. Nine years and 200000 miles later, still as fast and fun to drive as day one. Still has original clutch. Getting 22 to 24 mpg highway at 75 mph. Oil change every 5k miles. Black paint showing its age as well as some bumps and rattles. Replaced ignition packs and 3 oxygen sensors 2.5 years ago. Exaust pipe hangers rusted at 180K so put on new pipes myself. One axle shaft at 192K(boot failure) Normal maintenence, brakes, plugs I have done myself. The car not good in snow with all season radials. If you live in snow area, invest in 4 snow tires. What a difference. This is the best car I've owned.
1999 Nissan Maxima SE 5-speed Manual
5-speed manual. Lots of fun with the 5-speed, although friends with the automatic haven't complained too much about performance. Fair amount of body lean in corners, but with the right tires and judicious use of the gearbox you're always under control. Great ownership eperience the whole way.
Take it to the 'Max'
Leased my Maxima GLE on a whim on my Birthday in 1999. I knew as soon as I fired up the silky V6 and drove down one particularly rough section of road, I had to have it. It's cushy yet fun to drive in the twisties, though it won't be confused with a sports car. This car's forte is silent running and comfy cruising. The Bose system is amazing. People have said the styling is non descript, and I tend to agree to a point, but blending in is good, especially since the car loves to run fast; I've found myself well in excess of the 65 MPH limit and not being aware. Sometimes I'll go for a drive just to listen to the Bose and feel the response and smoothness.
One of the best values out there!
I drive this car very hard and have not had a problem with my max. Bought an extended warranty with the car, big mistake, it was a waste of money. Only items that need replacement were belts (85k)brake pads(35k and 75k) and the battery(87k). The pick-up this car has is amazing considering the engine output. Handles well and the transmission is relatively smooth.
I have mixed feelings about this car.
I had put 17,000 miles on this car,it has 67,000 miles on it so far. Problems: 1)Nissan Ignition Immobilizer system failed(car would not start)($ 140) 2)Fake interior wood trim started to deteriorate due to ultraviolet radiation from the Sun($ 235 online). 3)Rough idle,I will probably have to replace ALL the six fuel injectors which cost about $800. My parents own a '99 Suzuki Esteem and a '99 Honda Accord EX V6 for more than two years and NEVER had a single problem with them, that's what I call reliability.(The Honda Accord needs no major maintenance until 100,000 miles).
Love It!
This is my third Maxima and they only seem to get better every time. I can't wait to see what the next body-style has to offer.
Fun Reliable Sedan
This car is fun to drive especially since I have the 5-speed model. I've had it for almost 3 years now and it has been great. It is very reliable, it has good amount of power although more horsepower wouldn't hurt. Overall good car I did not have to do any maintenance yet all I do is change the oil every 3,000 miles and the car runs perfect. Currently has 126k but it will run for much longer.
3rd Time Wasn't a Charm
This Nissan was my 3rd product, and it will be my last. Although nothing major went wrong, little stuff did. Examples, engine is so heavy, I had to replace all four tires by 20K miles; found out just before the lease turn in that I had had a bad throttle from the first day I drove it off the lot and it wasn't covered under warranty; a 35K miles, the trunk is already rusting.
Very pleased
Owning this car has been a very good experience. Very comfotable ride, good acceleration, good responsiveness. The interior is a combination og wood grain and black leather which never failed to impress anybody that got in my car. I recently was rear ended by a full size ram truck and the car took it pretty well no real damage past the trunk area at 8-10mph. Good family sports sedan.
my car
very nice car to drive and own. Highly recommended for everybody who wants a highly dependable vehicle.
Great car
very happy with it. 2 problems that nissan knows about but will not fix is the ignition coils and the rear calipers stick....
Excellent Sporty Sedan
My first four door car after owning sports cars then a Nissan Sentra SE-R. Bought off E-bay with 40,000 miles and extended warranty, didn't need the warranty, now at nearly 80,000 and literally nothing has gone wrong with the car, not even a bulb out. Got it because I wanted more room, practicality than my Sentra SE-R drove a 5-speed Maxima and it felt like a SE- R with a little more room, power and torque. Plan on keeping it for a long long time, little to fault with this car
oxygen sensor
Only problem I have had is faulty oxygen sensor. Have had an emmision problem in models 1992 and 1996 and now the 1999. Dealer Hyannis Nissan refuses to correct problem because over warranty even though I have complaind about problem before warranty ran out. Excuse was that their computer was down until recently.
Simply Remarkable
I was looking for a Honda but the resell value was too high so I purchased the Maxima and I have not regretted it since. With nearly 150,000 miles the engine still sounds new and it performs incredibly well. Incidental maintenance becomes an issue as the car gets older i.e. alternator, cylinder, plugs, but major failures seem near impossible. If you have a choice this is the best pre-owned car value on the road!
Wow! I love my Maxima
I bought this car at 83K miles. After about a year and a half it now has 120K miles. This car is amazing and I love it to death. Reliability is fantastic as I have had virtually no maintenance costs w/the exception of oil changes, etc. I get a lot of compliments about how smooth the ride is. Some people dislike the styling of these Maxima's, but I love the car inside and out. It is fully loaded w/every option but traction control and everything still works perfectly and in tip top shape, despite being a 6 year old car. This is the best car buying decision I have made and it's a blast to drive. I plan to keep my Maxima until at least 200K miles, when I will likely go buy a new one.
a good compromise
Good compromises: it's spirited yet soft and peppy yet docile. Backseat and trunk more useable than some of its competitors. Engine pulls hard and sounds good throughout most of its range although top end thrust is lacking. Auto has a hard 1-2 shift when cold. I found the steering wheel more comfortable/responsive than others. Interior looks great although there are a couple of rattles/squeaks (easily fixable, but still). Overall I'm pleased and wouldn't be considerably happier (for what I was willing to spend) without two different cars. It can either comfortably haul around four people or I can play.
best car
it is the car for all family i sugseged to person want agood car buy it
Great Buy
I bought my Maxima GXE used in '03 with 29K miles, and it was the best used car decision I ever made. It is now at 152K miles and still going strong. It has never needed a major repair. I change the oil myself every 3K miles with Pennzoil 5w-30. Repairs includes: CV boot replacements X 2, two O2 sensors, Brakes Pads front & back X 2. I replaced the radio with Sony deck with CD and Ipod wiring located in glove box, installed remote staring and door open unlock system, new speakers front and rear, Chrome wheels and had front bumper, hood and front quarter panels repainted.
What happened to Nissan and Quality
This is my second 4th Gen Nissan Maxima. Fun to drive in a 5 speed, a true wolf in sheep's clothing. I sold my 95 for a fully loaded 99. Since November 06, I've replaced the ignition coils ($600), alternator ($200), brake calipers ($200), a new clutch ($800), starter ($250) and NOW, gearbox/tranny work (proven factory defect) ($1000) - all in the last 6 months. The coils, tranny, and starter should at least last 10 years or the life of the vehicle. Similiar so should the alternator. This vehicle is NOT reasonably durable.
A Very Good Car
So far the car has been reliable, no major problem except that the Anti Theft device needed to be reprogramed once. I like the car, good power, good interior size and look good, with the Sport Package. I'd buy another.
best car
built well. very few repairs if any. comfortable. hugs the road. smooth drive. pretty. presentable. roomy.
Good to Excellent
I think that it is a fun car to drive. It has too much road noise. The seats could be a more be comfortable. The leather is very durable and has upheld very well. I have not had to perform any unscheduled maintenance. The sound system is wonderful.
Martin
This car is dependable you can get up with confidence that you will get where you are going. The car has exceptional turning ratio for excellent manuvering in tight spots such as parking or making a u turn in a limited area. The interior is durable and with minimal care will maintain a fresh look for years. The only short fall I find with the body is the exterior is of soft metal that is easy to ding if touched by another vehicle door.
Best car I've owned
I bought this car in 2000 with 14000 miles on it. The guys at the dealership put 3000 miles on it before I bought it. When I saw it had a 5 speed 6 cylinder engine, I bought it right away. Now with 130000+ miles on it it still runs good as new, with no major problems to report. The only problem I have ever had was a sensor that needed to be replaced & routine maintenance. I just bought an SUV and I didn't have the heart to trade the Maxima in. Hopefully I'll get another 100000 miles out of it!
Great Car
Great all around sedan. Plenty of power and has a comfortable interior and rides very smoothly. One of a kind sedan.
The Best I ever had
I've always admired the Maxima being a car that have some looks to it and come with a stick(Camry, Accord). Someone once told me that it is better to getting a stick in a I4 and automatic in a V6. They are wrong. This car has a lotta bang for buck. It is fun to drive and it takes corners like a dream. This car one of the best FWD V6s for the money!!
ReliableEngine/Trans,thats where it ends
Bought this car w/118000 on the clock w/out concern about reliability. In the past 3 1/2yrs, the engine and trans. have lived up to expectations (161500). However, I've had to replace the alternator, 2 oxygen sensors, knock sensor, starter, tie rod, oil pressure switch, belt tensioner, two axles. I know w/this kind of mileage there is an expectation to replace parts, but this seems excessive. Now I'm looking at having to replace the front struts and rear bushings. What prevents me from putting this car out to pasture is the engine/trans, quality/look and user friendly interior as well as the leather seats, moon roof and the Bose sound system.
Too soon, but I have a good feeling
I just bought the Maxima. I had been looking for a low milage 99 or 00 and found this 99 three weeks ago with 36,000 mi. One test drive and I bought the car 10 min. later. How could someone give up this beautiful little car it is in perfect shape?
A car you'll be very happy with!
I bought this car a year and a half ago with 22,000 miles on it. I have since put 15,000 miles on it and it has been fantastic. The car is solid, runs hard, especially when you take it above 3000 RPM and handles very well. I've had to replace brakes and tires too which seems to be common. Other than those items the car has been very reliable. For the money, style and performance I agree with most others, this is a better car than a Camry or Accord.
Loaded Sedan for the Price of a Hyundai
Why buy a brand new piece of junk when 10k will get you a low mileage, fully loaded Maxima packed with V6 power? I recently auctioned my 2003 Toyota Tundra off to the highest bidder on eBay to get back to something more my speed, and the Maxima fills those shoes. I opted for a bright red SE Limited Edition, which adds the leather interior, Bose Stereo System, and a few other extras. This engine is smooth! I make up errands to run just to drive the car. This is truly affordable luxury and sporty sophistication. Original sticker price on my car was over $29,000.00 and I picked it up for just a hair over $10k.
worth every penny
i bought my max a 99 se gle combo a yr ago its the best model you can order every option is installed and i have put 48,000 hard slave driving miles on it everyday. and the speedo doesnt lye nissan says it tops out at a max speed of 149 mph and i can vouch for that! guys like it girls like it better so what are you waiting for go get yours !!!!
Japanese BMW
Mating the 5-speed with the V-6 engine brings this car to life. I have only hit the rev limiter once, but what fun! This car is fun on the mountain roads and loves to rev. The suspension is a little soft, but comfy. I installed aftermarket spring and shocks. I got mine used with 54k and now it is pushing 120k with no major issues. Runs best on high test gas and gets the best mileage with high test. I get 24 overall. If you can keep the speed to 60-65, doubtful, it will return over 30mpg. Best car I've ever owned. Still solid after 120k.
Great Car also very nice looking
I bought this car two years ago, with about 85000 miles on it, and the only maintenance I did on the car was to change the oil. The car is so smooth, like it just came out of the factory. If it wasn't for the dashboard, you would think it is a new car. Accelaration so smooth, highway driving is amazing, the only down side is when you make american stops the automatick transmission stays on second gear. Other than that it is a great car.
Maxima, best car for the price
This is a wondeful automobile. Nissan has the best engine going. Smooth performance. No service issues and the most reliable car I've owned. This is a great sports car feel disguised as a sedan
