Great All Around Car!

The Sable (Merc version of the Ford Taurus) has been found to be a safe and reliable full-size, mid-price, passenger car. I bought it as a "first car" for my 17 year old daughter during her senior year in high school. It has ample style and power; plus plenty of room to move a kid into a dorm room 200 miles away. I fully expect it to satisfy her vehicle needs throughout her college years.

Been a good car

Had 51,000 miles on it when I bought it, 116,500 on it now. Power steering pump replaced a couple years ago, front wheel bearings needed replacing at 105,000, and having trouble with the heater now (think maybe the heater core is plugged). It also needs an exhaust manifold gasket at present. That's about it other than normal maintenance like brakes, battery, etc. Been a good car, like the styling, rides and handles decent, runs good, has always started even at well below 0, gets dent gas mileage. Can't complain too much really.

Not a bad choice dependable comfortable

I got this low mileage car with fears of why it was available, but I must say it has really performed. The interior is nice, has lots of extras and the ride itself is smooth. This is a very dependable car and I would recommend it to others. The key is getting one with low mileage and was well maintained. The trunk space is huge, and stereo system very good. The engine and transmission are solid with the exception of the hidden radiator and no way of checking it. Suspension is fine. Not the best on gas however. There are really no complaints here. A good investment.

It had 118,000 miles on it when I bought it in 2004. In one year I have replaced the battery, steering pump, back brake calipers, rotors, tires, spark plug wires, O2 sensor, coolant over flow bottle, rack and pinion $900, and the engine light is on now and the car surges because another sensor has gone bad and its like having a car payment every month. My Windstar was worse. My family has owned Ford cars for more than 50 years and they all had electrical problems. Once the engine light comes on it never shuts off. I've had it!!!

There is one major drawback, gas gas gas consumption. Otherwise this is a solid investment if you purchase this car with low mileage and car fax proves that it was not driven into the ground. If the car was well maintained and has clean background, this is indeed a great car to have.

The 1999 Sable LX, with full leather

I have had zero problems, none whatsoever, in the four years I have owned this car. It is solid, very comfortable, a good performer, and everything works perfectly. The only drawbacks I have noted: the car is a bit jiggly on rough pavements, and the engine (the DOHC) is sort of unrefined compared to the Camry or Accord.

this car is AWESOME! My wife and I just bought it. I love the peppy dohc v-6. The only problem that we have found is that the flip over cup holder interferes with use of the ashtray, and the trunk is massive, if you can get anything in it due to the small opening. The leather interior is the most comfortable i've ever sat on. I drive limos for a living and this car feels more luxurious. Overall we love it!

This is my 15th car I have owned. It has been the best performer of all. I looks and performs very well. It is comfortable on long trips or short trips to the store. I have owned Ford, Chevrolet, Plymouth, Toyota, and Isuzu vehicles. None have performed or been more reliable than this Sable. I'm sorry they are being discontinued.

It's been a decent car for the most part. We've put over 80,000 miles on it in 4 yrs. The problems have been the cooling system, the brake rotors, and the heater core went out a year ago. And why Ford put independent rear suspension on it, i'll never know, just extra struts to be replaced! The wind noise is right on the edge of being tolerable. However, I wouldn't be afraid to go cross country in her right now! A person could do worse.

End of year model had factory dual exhaust & dual overhead cam V6 and 16inch chrome aluminum wheels and stiff suspension. After 62,400 miles it has been nearly trouble free, Replaced the master cylinder at 49,000 & idle control valve at 46,000. Runs very good easy to start and handles good. Original brakes lasted for 49,000 miles. Nice road car and looks great. Tune up is not needed until 100,000 miles. I really like the car.

Another Ford Transmission Problem

Steve--Midlothian VA, 07/20/2006

I am the 2nd owner of my '99 Sable (owned it for almost 4 years). It has only 70k miles on it, but it already needs major transmission work. It slips, or neutrals out momentarily, when starting from a stop. Ford, this is a safety issue, not just a value issue! No car should require a transmission rebuild at 70k. Additionally, the ABS light comes on intermittently, the brake pedal groans a bit, then sinks slightly to the floor. The dealer says his diagnostic computer can't communicate with my car's computer, so he doesn't know what's wrong or how to fix it. Makes me feel like I own a FIAT ("Fix It Again, Tony"). Now I understand why so many people switch to Hondas and Toyotas.

This is the worst car ever. I hate this car. The windshield wipers go off practically non stop without you even touching the dial. They are especially worse whenever I use the turn signal, and they'll go off about 10 times every time I turn. The transmission is iffy, it misses all the time, and is very jerky. It probably needs to be fixed! The brakes need to be serviced again, I already had them replaced once. (I've got about 120,000 miles on it). It's got some nice features inside. I like the power seats, and it's got awesome AC. But there is nothing worse than driving down the road with your brakes squealing and wipers going off like crazy. Don't buy one!

Got this car as a hand me down from my mom, which she bought used. The engine is solid, however the transmission can be suspect at times. Currently have 147,000 miles on it, with only wear parts being replaced, as well as the speed sensor at 145,000. Mileage is not amazing, about 20-24mpg city highway. Great highway cruiser.

I bought mine 6 years ago with 28,716, it now has 195,000. The tranny can be hard to shift when parked on a slope, but it has held up. The car's engine is solid and has been no problem what so ever. The wipers go off every so often. I have had problems for the past two years with the fan not blowing heat when on high, maybe crud in the lines again. It can really be hard to get anything in that trunk opening and folding mirrors would be nice also. The car has had its share of problems with stuff that has failed but never all at once and only a few hundred bucks, nothing that would break the bank. Junkyards, good auto repair shops, parts stores and plus any maintenance I do keep it running.

Purchased the car used with 50K, now has 85K. Has 24 valve DOHC engine which is preferable and peppy. Gets low-mid 20 mph in commuter driving and mid-high 20 mph on road trips. Best mph has been 29 and worst 20. Good drive train and suspension, rides well on all road surfaces/at all speeds. Has a tight body but some moderate road noise. The only issue I've had is with the rebuilt front disc brakes which is more of a parts supplier/mechanic issue than car issue. Great handling and fun to drive car. Bought it for commuting but found it was a good over the road car too.

Bought this car with 12K miles on it 10 years ago. Now has 120K miles on it. Overall, I am satisfied however my concerns are, the cooling system needs tobe flushed every 18 months to clean out the heater core, the windshield wipers come on buy themselves, the cruise control works sporadically, and the ABS light comes on when it is very cold out. The really big issue was when the brake lines rusted out last summer while my 19 year old son was driving. The brakes failed and he ran into the car in front of him. I thought the car had been well maintained, but it seems no one had checked the brake lines. I understand rusting brake lines are a common Ford issue.

Oil changes every 6,000 miles with filter changes every other 12,000. Driven every day for business. Over the road Salesman start and stop traffic, with alot of highway miles.

First brake job @ 68K, oil changes every 4K, high mileage user, car keeps running like a charm. This is Sable #3 for me. This is the first to have problems, although under extended warranty. 2nd Transmission for some reason, never had problems with the others. Good gas mileage on the long trips, many times hauling a LARGE trunk full of "stuff" and 5 people of normal size. Great family car that's still fun to drive with 24V engine!

I usually drive about 300 miles a day, and with the Sable, I never get bored. Great performance, I feel safe, it's comfortable, and reliable. I drove 2000 miles to North Carolina and back, and she made it just beautifully. I love my car, and with oil changes every 5,000 miles instead of 3,000, I never worry about being that poor girl broke down on the side of the road!

This is the first Sable I've ever owned, and I purchased it new. After having a horrible experience with an Escort, I was very leary about owning anything of the Ford or Mercury Division. I love this car. The trunk is unbelievably large. The 24V DOHC gives it great zip and go. It corner great and handles wonderfully in bad weather. My only negative experience was having to replace both back brakes including calipers and rotors this past summer with about 40,000 miles on them.

Its no wonder rental car companies buy these. At 19,000 miles, i love it. I drove it to New York form Orlando.Past 25,000 miles, starts to show minor wear and tear(engine rattling).30,000: Brakes arer bad, i keep on bringing it in for brakes until the 40,000 mile mark.Did brakes 20 times(no kidding).Guy at the dealer told me to sell it before serious trouble happens (told me all of the cars are junk).43,500 miles: engine revs to 5000 RPMS when shifting from first to second gear.44,000:I look at camarys, brakes are mushier on camarys than on my sable (drove several camarys). I finialy trade it in for a Hyundai Sonata Do admit sable was very comfortable though.

First car I bought new when I was just out of college. very impressed that I could afford leather and a moon roof for $23,000- tax, title, license all included--- and 0.9% financing to boot. test drove a pontiac grand prix and couldn't see out of it Sable is a good buy for what you get. Good on tires- first set went to 65,000 miles... got the same mileage out of original brakes as well. Would recommend car to anyone looking for a good used car (provided the original owener took good care of it, of course).

We are just about at 70,000 miles and never had any major repairs. The car is much faster than compatible modles and the LS trim makes the car look real sleak. Don't be afraid of buying as sable! However, never buy one with a trailer hitch as the tranmittions are not designed for towing. Stay away fromt the 3.8 Liter motor because of head gasket problems. I have leather seats, sunroof and climate control and a compatible Toyota Camry would have been a lot of thousands more. Why pay all that extra money.

I bought the car with 84k miles and I'm impressed. The Duratec engine starts easy in the winter and has ample pep. I get about 22.5 mpg on average (after tune up), which could be better I think. It's comfortable, quiet and roomy. No problem driving in snow. Huge trunk but the opening could be bigger. Its rather susceptible to cross winds when driving at highway speeds but otherwise smooth and solid (no rattle). The heated mirrors clear ice/snow build up pretty quick. Plenty of room for 3 kid seats in the back.

This is my fourth Sable/Taurus wagon, and I'm shopping for a new one now. The earlier models were plagued with transmission problems, but at 98k, the transmission on the '99 is doing just fine. I only do required maintenance. The only problem I had over the last four years was an intermittant electrical problem; turned out to be a loose battery post. Anyway, nothing but praise for this old workhorse. I load the back with forklifts, I carry my bikes on top, it's my restaurant, and dormitory.

In almost 4 years of use and 37000 miles, besides oil changes and tire rotation Ive only replaced the battery. The car is very dependable and the leather seating is as comfortable as they come. While many criticize the exterior design, I still enjoy looking at its style from front to back, especially the sides not being your typical flat sheet metal style as on most imports. Hope to get another 4 great years from it but just might get another new Sable before that with the price being one of the best values on the market.

My '99 Sable LS wagon replaced a '96 Explorer with the V8. The Sable's horsepower is only 5 less than the Explorer. Since I do not tow anything, I did not miss the difference in the torque. The cargo capacity is not far off from the Explorer. The car is comfortable. I have made several road trips of at least 500 miles; all in comfort. The LS bells and whistles (options)are icing on an outstanding cake. My wife still prefers an SUV but has no qualms about using my car when she needs to move people and/or stuff!

Though it has been a good car overall it seems ford needs to take the time to redesign their transmissions. Since I bought the car I am now about to put the third transmission into this car. At a cost of about three thousand dollars per transmission, I have put more into it than I have payed off. one transmission had lasted 108,000 miles, and the other has die at 181,000. I have had a lot of trouble with the car but by far the most serious has been the transmission, which if you talk to any ford dealer mechanic they will tell you it is a common problem.

Just bought yesterday with 90k miles on it and have to say I'm impressed so far. Some minor age related issues such as lock actuators have either knocked themselves loose or don't function and power steering needs looked at as pump was replaced but didn't solve the issue. Some common issues with this car but drives nicely otherwise with the 24 valve dohc in it with smooth shifts. Hope to get a few miles out of this car with minimal maintenance.

those darn windshield wipers!

I got this vehicle 13 years ago at 47,000km.... I'm now around 190,000km and had no major repairs! One tie rod end got fixed a couple years ago, and the brake pads obviously got replaced. One thing that bothered me from the start, was (what reviews warned about: electronics) the windshield wiper goes off at random, intermittently going on and off.... it still does that sometimes, but WAY less now than when I first got it. Also seems to have some sort of power drain, because I went through a bunch of batteries, until a mechanic suggested to use one of those maintenance chargers. Now I plug it in once in a while to top up the battery, and haven't had to buy one in years. Before that, a Lordco employee looked at it for me to see where the power drain comes from, and since then I have no horn! Just had that looked at, and found out Ford does not make this part any more, they are not available and would be expensive to replace (it's the coil thingy inside the drive shaft, so not an easy fix). Other than that, I love the car seat adjuster and heat/air conditioner. It came with a radio/CD changer in back, but that gave up the ghost within the first couple years. No more CD's or tapes. It's not the greatest on gas, and worse of all, in winter it swims around when it's slick on the road.... it's not heavy enough, or rear wheel drive. I feel quite unsafe to drive long distances, and wouldn't take it up to a ski hill. On the whole, though, this vehicle has been starting faithfully, and never let me down! Everybody warned me about getting a Ford, and they all went through more cars in that time than I!

The QC at ford stinks. The wagon has only 64000 on it and a landry list of reparis. Starting with half shafts, then warped rotors, then the 3rd brake lite flew off, then the vacumn system failed (this means your car will start but not move, fun). Also before the vacumn failed the Service light came on and the yo-yos at the dealership couldnt find the problem. Now the RF window is poping out. What a hunk of junk, my real feelings are R rated!

At 64K miles the transmission went out. It was a bad bearing on the pumpshaft which took out the torque converter. That cost $850. At 87K miles a friend wanted to buy it. I told him to have a mechanic check it out and drive it for a few days. Turns out the head gasket was blown. I had no idea. It never got hot and since you can't actually see in the radiator, and the little bottle stayed full, nobody caught it. We are now pround Camry owners.
