Best Car I've Ever Owned

bigcarsrule, 07/20/2013
1999 Mercury Grand Marquis GS 4dr Sedan

Bought my '99 Marquis with 65K on it. Now has 275K and never left me stranded. It did require a tranny rebuild at 130K ($1800) but it and the engine run perfectly with just regular maintenance and small expected repairs that are dead cheap compared to other cars. Still my daily driver at the 14 year old mark with 23 mpg in half city, half highway miles. I've gotten 29 mpg with cruise set to 65. Don't let the laughably adolescent "official" review deter you from buying. If you want a comfortable, reliable, and economical car with plenty of room for people, groceries, or other stuff, don't miss your chance to get one. (BTW, with Nokian snow tires, these are the boss in winter).

I still love this car - been driving it 18 years. Although it's old it still performs well, gas mileage ranks up there with most new vehicles. Rides pretty smooth and I could fit another car in the trunk (hahaha). Full size normal use spare (where else can you get that?). It's super easy to clean, visibility is good and no wind noise.

i have changed the intake fuel pump. but, yesterday i changed the front shocks and the alternator. it was the one the car came with 11 years ago. that's a long time. i recommend the monroe sencra-trac on the front and back. don't buy a alternator from autozone they don't know a damn thing. had to take the alternator back the new 1. had to replace it. but the car rides damn good, has 305 hp, and really good mpg. when it is time to get another car, no doubt MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS! Autozone awful!

Good solid comfortable car for the whole family. I'm only 25 years old and people say that I drive an old man car but so what. With a V-8 that gets 25 mpg and all the power in the world, I can't complain at all. Smooth, smooth, smooth!

Almost perfect, but Ford went backwards

I switched from a 1993 Grand Marquis to a 1999. Quiet a step backwards. Not only is the gas mileage "worse" (EPA rating and in real world), many little items don't make sense. The AutoLamp feature is nervous, comes on in shady places already. The rear defrost button is invisible while steering, located on the left. No cupholders in the rear. Cupholders in the front block climate control. The ride is almost perfect. Safe, reliable and not too expensive to maintain. Overall, a good vehicle.

Awesome Mercury Grand Marquis

I'm a 21 year old and this is my first car I ever bought and let me tell you it's an awesome car. Now I see why cops and taxi cab drivers use them. I've driven these kinds of cars since I was 17 this being the 3rd one I've driven and first one I've bought and owned. I've driven a 95 model and another 99 model that my father owns. This car only has 37,500 miles on it right now. It had 27,450 when I bought it for less then $7 grand. I have the GS model but I have leather seats. It rides and handles really smooth and has good pick up for it's size. It's not no Mustang or race car but it can keep up and has the power when needed.

Brought it brand new in 1999. Currently have 150,587 miles. Had the intake manifold replaced and recently a tire rod and now on its 4 set of tires. Otherwise the car has been reliable, comfortable safe ride. A/C works well still cold. My only concern is the stability of the under carriage on rough rods. the vehicle sometimes feels as if it loses contact with the road surface at highway speed. Mileage is appx 250 miles to a tankful highway/city driving. Also the fender above the front tires is rusting. Seems to be a common problem with this car.

Solid Car for the Money

The Grand Marquis is what most cars today aren't: spacious and functional, not "hot" and gimmicky. It's drive is very smooth, expecially on the highway. It's a true 6-passenger car, unlike other pseudo-"full size" cars that don't come close. Its huge trunk gives you a lot of flexiblity, as long as you're careful not to injure your back (it depth makes for a hazard if you're picking up something heavy). The interior could use some refinement, but not (we hope) at the expense of a price increase, since VALUE is what makes the Grand Marquis compete.

This has been a great car. I bought it used with about 40000 miles on it and now I have about 100000 miles. While it is not an exciting car to drive it has proved to be very reliable, it uses no oil between changes, handles very well for a vehicle of it's size. I commute about 20 miles to work about 75% interstate highway and I am averaging about 20 mpg, on long highway runs I have gotten as high as 26 mpg, but can usually count on about 24 mpg. If hope to keep this car another 10 years and when the time comes find another slightly used one.

Gas Mileage Poor????

papasmith, 03/18/2011
1999 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 4dr Sedan
4 of 4 people found this review helpful

I am not sure if others who are complaining of poor gas mileage have a different engine or what in their GM but, in my case, this car gets excellent gas mileage for its size. On road trips, my GM will get 28MPG and a bit more. This is with around 120k. We have not have the car tuned or anything else to enhance gas mileage. This is no hype or exaggeration. Now, I know that it is listed to give 22MPG Hwy as the official number. That might be true when it is new but, once it is broken in, the MPG shoots up. This is a very comfortable and reliable car for the most part. This why they and Crown Vic are popular as taxis and cop cars.

I have a 1999 grand marquis. I have had it for a year. I have had to change air springs, fuel pump twice, fuel pressure regulator, shocks, tires, ball joints, window motor, and intake manifold its my own dam fault I buy car as is. But, it has more power than most cars. Its fast and rides so good. I'm gonna get a 2002 model. But the Mercury will be the only car I own. I wish I had traction con, abs 2. The 02 has everything I want and need. I hate gmc and all imports. Ford all the way. I'm n process of buying a 2002 marquis. Thanks 2 all y'all out there.

After having my 1994 wrecked I found this one in Florida. After many miles the only major thing I had to replace was the intake which spewed antifreeze into the oil & caused it to run rough. Original mufflers lasted 10 years & pipes are original. Great mileage (people always say to me it is a gas guzzler when it gets the same mileage as their V6 foreign cars!) and put performance chip along with K & N filter on myself.

Car owned by senior female, ( kept in garage) and in pristine condition. My concern is depreciation because of age, not condition of vehicle. Convenience of entering the vehicle, room, trunk space, comfort, ease of driving and service are the reasons I have chosen a Mercury LS for my last 3 cars. Safety, of course, is also a major issue. I like the rear-wheel drive feature.

It has been every thing I thought it would be, extremly comfortable with plenty of room and power. I will definetly buy another one. I have always owned Park Avenues and Buick Electras but I am sold on the Grand Marquis.

My car has slightly over 36,000 miles on it. I just had to replace the fuel pump for the second time, imagine with only slightly over 36,000 miles. I am 76 years old, I had to have my car towed yesterday in 90 degree heat. It cost me over $540 for a stinking fuel pump for the second time. I have contacted Mercury via phone, both the 800-521-4140 number and the number you get when you join their user club or whatever it is. They won't do a thing, they won't let you talk to anyone who can make a valid decision. You get to talk to phone-flunkies answering flunkies and that is it. Some support, I have owned my last Mercury.

Never had any major problems and hope too keep driving for at least another 57000 miles and why not! Still get compliments on this car and offers to purchase it from me.

Basic mix of 1970s design of large rear- wheel 4-dr car with updating of firmer suspensions and more efficient engine is attempted here. This car is an excellent alternative to the SUV with 24mpg on the freeway with Town Car like ride and confort. Great ride on the interstate but marginal on mountain roads. Drawback is overall quality in fit and finish. Dealers are very good to respond to quality issues but warranty is expiring soon, oh well. The perfect car for me is the style and size of the Grand Marquis and the qualty of the Camry. PS.. the big trunk is great!

I bought this car with 85K miles on it because I wanted size and safety. That is what I got. It has been very reliable so far, except the lighting control module went out. So, my interior lights go on and off all day by itself. I had to take all the light bulbs out of the interior of the car or my battery would run dead. Also, the keyless entry doesn't work. It gets exactly 18 MPG with combined city/hwy driving. That's too bad considering gas is not $2.00+ per gallon. The car is very confortable, but score a "zero" in the fun factor rating. So, if size and safety is important to you, this is a good car for you.

I bought my mercury Grand Marquis LS a year old with 25000 miles on it. It was our alternative to another minivan or SUV. So far it has been great. It gives an incrediable ride and performance is outstanding for such a large car. 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds. So far im very happy with my Grand Marquis except for one problem. After a hard rain, the car sometimes stalls unless at high RPMs.

It will not nickel and dime you with repairs. This one has and excellent paint job with a half rag roof. Looks very sporty.

the accessories are very unreliable. My car has been back to the dealer about 12 times in the 3 years I've owned. Bad speed control; bad keyless entry pad; bad AC (twice); windshield wipers have been worked on at least 6 times (replaced 5 times) and they still stutter across the windshield. Almost no storage room in passenger compartment. When drinks are in the drink holders, you can't access the AC controls. Rides rough for such a large car. Inadequate leg room in the back.

I have had this car since it was new. The ONLY things I have done to it are tires, belts, hoses at regular intervals and a new battery. I have had gas mileage as high as 29.8 MPG at turnpike speed of 80 MPH. Dependability, great gas mileage and a luxury ride! I have bought another one! Consumers Reports Magazine rates the 1999 as a Best Buy used car. I agree.

I've had only one problem with my Mercury since 1999. I replaced the Idel control motor. A $89 part that took longer to drive accross town and pick up than to replace. It is the ideal family car. 27 miles to the gallon on the highway! More trunk space that you can imagine. Once you own one you will never buy a tin can again. I have replace the tires a little early on the wifes request. Outstanding car.

The Mercury Grand Marquis, 1999 vintage, is/was a very stable, low maintenance car, with excellent road manners, reasonable gas mileage, and a lot of room. It is like having a mid sized pickup truck in terms of rear seat and trunk capacity, but with 25 mpg highway mileage and a luxury car ride. I have 225,000 miles on it and have never had any substantial engine/ transmission or other problems. I would love to see this vintage of car eventually become a classic.

It has a couple of dings that came with it but it still runs and drives great.

I've owned this car since 2001, bought it with 32k miles. It is a very reliable vehicle. It has the best ride, unless you like sportier/firmer ride quality, and is large enough for the whole family, even on vacations. It is a Park Lane Edition, equipped with all options except for a CD player. One can really work the deals during the negotiation of these car purchases!

I bought my LS used 2 yrs ago at 70k and now have 130k with no repairs whatsoever. I love the gas mileage - I'm getting 24.6 summer and 22.6 winter with about 60%hwy and 40%city driving. Even at our mile-high, there's plenty of power in the small V8 to accelerate up hills. I easily and inexpensively bought a Ford OEM radio/CD player to replace the std cassette player. I found the driver's seat didn't fit me well until after I took out the lumbar support and put more foam in the upper back and seat bottom. I also found that I have to brake with my left foot or the awkward right leg position causes pain. I'm 6'2" and 270lbs.

I've only driven boulevard cruisers for the past 25 years. This one’s a bit too stiff and there isn't nearly the room I'm used to. I compare this to my '94 Town Car, and it just doesn't stack up. Not enough rear legroom, and even the front seems a bit cramped. That said, it sure beats the heck out of any import in it's price range for room, size and comfort. We bought ours used in October 2002 for $12,000 out the door with 30K one owner miles on it. That's what I call bang for the buck! Been flawless as long as we've owned it. However, if I had it to do over, I'd look at another 92-97 Town Car instead. Well worth the few more dollars.

The car now has over 55,000 miles on it and has only been in for warranty service ONCE and that was for a minor repair to a headlight lens cover. It gets 29 mpg on the highway and averages 24 mpg overall. It's quiet, powerful and rides well on all types of roads. Nice going Ford, it's a terrific car.

Well there is one minor problem which they have so far refused to fix and I'm talking to Ford directly about that. They tell me they will fix it, but when? Its already out of warrenty and still promise, but have not done it.

I am a bit younger than the average Grand Marquis owner (37)however I needed a car that could swallow a lot of highway miles effortlessly and this vehicle does just that. Bought an LS with the performance package (alloys, dual exhaust, digital dash)two years old with 28K, just rolled 75K and other than front brakes and an oil change every 5-6k it has been excellent. I recently developed a small oil leak at the head gasket however I believe this is a fluke for this model as it appears rare.

This is my third Grand Marquis, and by far the best of all. They just keep getting better and better. I always put over 100000 miles on them before trading, with no major problems. Also, I get the dual exhaust model, as it adds a few more horsepower to the already peppy 4.6L.
