I bought a used 2002 S430 in November of 2012. It was $11,000. I immediately had an issue with the air suspension which leaked and I had Peter, a local mechanic (SilverStar Motors) who specialized in Mercedes fix it. He is much more reasonable than the dealership but the repair was $1400. He warned me the car has a history of expensive issues. I replaced the tires with ContiPro fro $600. I did not have any additional issues until recently it was side-swiped on the street and the driver mirror was tore off. The parts alone are over $1000 and I'm looking at 1300-$1,500 with labor and paint. To pile on my check engine light came on and the car has a bit of a shake and rough idle. We will see.

My sad experience with my S600!

The air conditioning had to be replaced 5 months after I bought it. The entire dashboard went out (i.e. no speedometer, no dash lights, no signal indicator lights). The engine kept running AFTER the car was turned off and the key taken out of the ignition. The hydraulic system failed leaving the car sitting 6" from the ground. Replaced battery twice in 30 months. GPS is archaic - not user friendly and half the addresses are not in the system. Have to buy add'l CD-ROMs to go all over the U.S. The mobile phone with the car is not digital and the dealer said it will cost $1,100 to upgrade to a digital phone.

I purchased the car new and picked it up at the factory in Germany in 2001, so I had the car probably way too long. I loved the style with the Sport (AMG) body kit and wheels in Alabaster white with tinted windows. It still looks better in my opinion than most of the later designs Mercedes foisted on us which is why I kept so long. However, not without great cost. I kept all receipts and spent approximately $14,000 on repairs during my tenure with it including a transmission rebuild and complete air suspension replacement. Oh, and it only had 105,000 miles on it when I sold it today for $3,100. It had many issues when sold: 3 of four soft door closers inoperable @$400 ea; one inoperable door lock @$800; leaking valve cover gaskets @ $600; inoperable remote trunk opener @ $600. The exterior and interior were perfect, the car had never even been through a car wash, having been owned by one obsessive owner who is also a car nut with six other equally cared for vehicles. In comparison, my wife got a 2002 Lexus SC 430 a retractable hardtop convertible also in late 2001and we have put only $1,300 in repairs into that car. The comparison tells me a lot. She still loves the car and plans on keeping a lot longer. This was my fourth Mercedes over the past thirty years and the maintenance history on all was pretty much the same story as this last car. Needless to say there are no more Mercedes in my future however long that may be. Makes a Genesis G80 Sport look pretty good!

Straight talk on heavy repair costs

The bargain price of today hides expensive repairs. It has design flaws: cup holders, knee hits seat warmer, ugly center console. It has known leak issues and electrical issues. It has air suspension issues. Auto door locks and trunk flaws. Don't forget the untreated metal that rusts from the inside. Watch for rust around tire wells all up and down sides. Rust quote was $2700. The gorgeous slick design holds water. The car is now 11 so expect collapsed engine mounts, catalytic converter rattles, drive shaft flex disk...So you can plan on buying it for $6-7K and putting 6-8K into it and you will get a beautiful smooth powerful ride that originally cost $80K+ and the engine will go to 200K mi.

Bought this car new. Thought I would keep it for 10 yrs. Or 200,000 miles. It might last but the repair bills after 100,000 miles is way out of line. Had many problems with this car. Front end work, gear selector replaced, auto doors repaired, all items you would not expect to break, could not lock doors, many other items. I made the mistake in keeping this car too long. I have had many Mercedes this was the worst for repair. Do not think I will be buying another one.

Since purchase it has been a blast to drive. Hopeful the balanced engine translates into long life as that is the only way I am every going to get my money out it! '03+ S55 probably faster due to supercharger, but I could not stand to even think what a supercharger would cost down the line. Really enjoy the machine, great ride/fast ride. I confide I still don't feel like I "fit in" an S55 but hopeful my ego will catch up with the wheels.

The overall quality of the MB 220 series has suffered from the lack of pride and attention to details that MB engineers had on previous marques. My experiences range from 4 leaking valves on the brand new car,off centered pulley, faulty command system, leaky air suspension, steering wheel that extends itself at some strange times. Most of the problems were fixed by the dealer and MB, however, they make you feel like that you're taking advantage of them. My god! I'm just trying to get problems that should not have been there in the first place.

I have had nothing but problems. Sure better not trust it on a trip. I have sat in a hotel room one week and looked at the wall while the car was in the shop. Navagation gave out on another trip . Plans were made for a trip this week but this time I never got out of town. All lights were on. I was in the service dept instead of leaving. This has been going on from the day I brought it home. Almost 2007 and only less than 35,000 miles. I am solving this problem.Talking to Lexus. Plans in the making for a 2007 LS 460 so I can travel again. I have driven nothing but a Mercedes and was a die hard lover of the car.

All throughout my life, my family has only owned MB cars. I grew up around them so I know about their great ride, fantastic style and reliability. My first car was a C230 and I got an SLK after that. I traded in for a 2002 S500 sports package and it was the biggest mistake. four days after I drove it out the lot, the air suspension dropped so the car was sitting on its tires and had to be towed and the repair alone cost $1400. After that repair, the brakes had to be replaced for another $900, two weeks after, my HID headlamps went out which costs another 500 bucks. In addition, the alternator started to act up at 70k miles and costs $900 to replace. The biggest disappointment!

Mercedes and people overrate this piece of junk. You seriously pay only for the star. THe day I bought the car, the cupholders would pop out, and the sign said "ACTIVE BODY CONTROL TOO LOW- SEE WORKSHOP!", okay. The next day, my front armrest wouldn't open (dealership wouldn't say anything), so I could not access my mercedes Motorola V60 phone. (they ended up damaging the leather, alas, they wouldn't fix it). I am now scared to turn on the car

I adore my Mercedes. Bought it late 2001 till now, 2008, 7 years and the biggest thing done to it are new tires, besides that, completely reliable! It was a S430V (apparently according to the salesman it's better in some ways) with some lovely upgrades (bi-xenon headlights & washers, Nappa leather, wood & leather steering wheel and shift gate). The transmission is still silky smooth, and the air suspension has not failed once. The engine is not the most powerful but still quite nippy. In general; reliable, comfortable, and I absolutely adore it. Merc's dealer network is very friendly and helpful (at least at my dealer), but they charge you for every single little thing!

The 2002 S430 is by far the best luxury car we've ever owned. We had a 2000 740i for two years, and we were very disappointed with the new 7. The new 745 looks like a Dodge Stratus is about the most confusing car I've ever driven. The S-Class is a much better luxury car. It has a classy design, fabulous interior, and all the bells and whistles you would expect for 80K.

This is a wonderful car that has its problems. Like everyone else I have found the COMAND system difficult to use. It can never be used while driving because it is so complicated. Another gripe is that there is a large blindspot because the passenger side mirror is obstructed by the A Pillar in many driving positions. The car is so easy to drive, and you never hear the engine. Also the power is smooth. Finally the interior is wonderful spacious and comfortable. Also the trunk is practicle. My only problem was when I got a flat tire and had to pay 500$ for a new tire. Also the remote battery dies quickly, but the dealer will happily replace it. In general this is a great car.

Definitally wait for next years (2003 S500). They are going to redesign the horrible COMMAND system, and upgrade the materials in the cabin. There are too many flimbsy plastics for a car like a S500. Power is pretty comparable to an LS430 or Q45.

So many blind spots, cheap made, very little leather and I want even get into the problems I have had. I am ashamed of the poor excuse for the navigation, no one told me about the 10 cd,s you had to buy.Bought all while traveling and then the whole system gave out.Plastic bumpers?

I purchased a 2002 S430 with low miles and all the bells and whistles (still learning how to operate them). I love this car! It's definitely a beautiful car that gets a lot of attention, no matter how old it is! I am a previous Infiniti owner and I don't know why I didn't buy a S430 sooner! So far, I don't have any complaints on the performance. However, I will get a chance to test the limits once I take it on a long road trip. We'll see what happens!

I just purchased my 2002 Mercedes Benz S430 in L.A., and 3 hours later, i found out that my key would not lock/unlock the doors. Worse, i could not open my trunk! So now, i have to lock/unlock manually by pushing up each locking switch on each door.(the inside automatic-locking button won't work either) I really should have gotten (for a lower price) the Lexus LS430 ultra-lux. But if you like the outside/inside style and the name, go ahead. But I do like the outside styling and the interior room (and rear legroom)

Great vehile however here are my objections: NO Pass-through for skis. In this day and age there should be a pass through the rear center arm rest for skis or golf clubs etc. There should NOT be an up charge on the 500 series for rear seat heaters. When you pay more than $80,000 for a car the rear seat heaters should be included. Needs one DVD for navigation s¥ßtem not 7 cd's

I hate this car. It is so stupid. I regret not getting the BMW 745Li or the Lexus LS430 Ultra lux. I have had nothing but problems since I brought it home. Either the controls don't work or the car won't start. Some times the car feels like locking the door when it feels like it. It has a mind of its own. Even the GPS turns off by itself. COnsidering I paid over $81,000 for this car, I am extremely disapointed. GOOD buy Mercedes, next time, I am heading for Lexus!

I had nothing but problems from day 1. While it is one of the best looking cars out there, I had component problems regularly. Breaks were replaced twice inside 15,000 miles, computer board replaced, electrical problems, noise and loose parts creating noise in the cabin, bas sensors not allowing to put the car in gear and much more... The car suffers from many problems caused by cheap or poor quality components used in the build. I hope MBZ will fix their problems for the future - for now I can not wait to finish my lease and get into a reliable Lexus !!!

This is the best of 14 new Mercedes that I have owned, and the worst as far as problems, has something to do with my servicing dealer (not the same as seller) When you fill out a poor satisifaction report on a dealer they are informed of you name. Beware!!! they will get even, through no loaner available or excess charges, This may be my last mercedes because of them

This is my second S-class. As with my first , I cannot find a better vehicle. Considering that this car costs over $80,000 to buy, the dealer support is unsatisfactory. I have tried two dealers in my area and I find that their Service Departments have no clue as to customer service. One department misplaced my vehicle for one hour at time of pickup, but did not complete the repairs- they did not tell me- I had to read the work order. The other dealer was to call me when a part came in and never did. One month later , I went to their parts department and purchased the item which I installed myself.

I onwed this car for year and half. Nice performance but it had engine oil leak, driver sit, mirrors, CD changer circuit breaks down, panic button never worked. This is the car made me never get a Mercedes again not for 84 grams.

Wonderful car with a lot of interior space, convenient features and Keyless Go is a really cool option that lets you not use your keys, it's like a credit card, very neat.

This car has been a huge disappointment. The car has had problems since day one. It continues to have problems on a regular basis. Command Center failures for the first 18 months, radio, phone, airmatic pump, faulty warning indicators, steering three times, battery discharge (4 visits to fix correctly), both front windows quit working, numerous trim and molding problems, numerous electrical problems. This is not what I expected from MBZ. This is clearly the most expensive car and the worst performing car I have ever owned. Dealer also struggles to get repairs right the first time. Seems too sophisticated for their mechanics.

is the best handling sedan ever drive, especially when driving with a stiffer suspension and change gear manually. However, the sitting positions are not as pleasant as previous model.

This car is the most expensive and lousy car in my life. I am (was) a loyal Lexus owner, and I decided to break away from the Ls430 and switch to the prestigious S-class. The biggest mistake in my life. The day I bought the $80,000 car, the power seats did not work, GPS freezes . (not to mention the worst GPS system in history. ) the power trunk closer and doors did not work, sunshade not going down, the brake pad and ABC had an light on the display the pick up speed is slow, The only good thing on this car is the style/ride. After the experiences with this car, I will never get another benz
