Overview
When the opulence of Mercedes-Benz's flagship electric SUV — that would be the EQS 580 SUV — feels a bit too common, buyers of uncommon means can reach for the 2024 Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV instead. With a base price nearly $50,000 higher than the top Benz EV, the Maybach delivers on the promise of its vaunted nameplate. Massaging rear seat footrests, acres of rear legroom, a mini-fridge, Champagne flute holders: The Maybach EQS is for when you're ready for someone else to do the driving — full time, preferably. Electric power, and plenty of it, distinguishes the Maybach EQS from its gas-powered V8 GLS counterpart.
According to GeoTab’s data, if the observed degradation rates are maintained, the vast majority of batteries will outlast the usable life of the vehicle.

Am I Ready for an EV?
EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work
If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station
Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more
About that GLS gas-powered counterpart: The electric Maybach is a thinly veiled "because they can" exercise, but it will resonate with specific buyers. First, it's more powerful and faster than the twin-turbo-powered GLS. Mercedes says the electric Maybach can dash from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, about a half-second quicker than both the GLS and Benz EQS 580 SUV. Mercedes says the Maybach's range is 280 miles, nearly the same as the EQS 580 SUV's 285-mile range. Mercedes also says you can add about half of that in 15 minutes of charging and up to 80% battery capacity in 30 minutes, so time spent admiring the optional silver-plated Champagne flutes from the rear heated loungers can be kept short.
Competitors to consider
Despite its palatial extravagance and womb-like serenity, the Maybach EQS 680 SUV is a fairly ordinary EV underneath. If you're not after the chauffeur treatment, there are several luxury electric SUV alternatives such as the Porsche Taycan Turbo or Turbo S. Neither try to seal off the world outside; on the contrary, they make the road come alive with Herculean power and speed, zipping from 0 to 60 mph in as few as 2.4 seconds. While the Taycan isn't an SUV, its two storage spaces combine for more cargo space than the Maybach's meager 15.3 cubic feet. The forthcoming Cadillac Celestiq promises to be an intriguing ultra-luxe rival, although each will be built by hand in extremely limited production, and we expect it to cost nearly double the Maybach. If it's just a high-luxury SUV you seek, gas-powered options abound, including the Aston Martin DBX, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus.

The Maybach EQS SUV exists in a world by itself. If you want all the luxuries of an ultra-high-end SUV but demand an EV, this is your choice. It's not perfect, but the Maybach EQS SUV does all of the things you'd expect a Maybach to do while still offering a great EV experience. It's a solid first step for what is likely to be many electric products from the brand.
How does the Maybach EQS SUV drive? At our test track, the Maybach EQS SUV put down some decent numbers considering its massive size and weight. We achieved 60 miles per hour in 4.1 seconds. That's slower than many other luxury EVs we've tested, but the Maybach's 649 horsepower is plenty to get you up and moving when you need it.
As expected, the around-town driving experience is sublime in this vehicle. Four-wheel steering helps the Maybach feel less cumbersome at low speeds and reduces the turning circle by quite a bit. There is effortless power with almost no noise coming from the outside world — just silent propulsion while you are cruising along inside one of the most comfortable interiors ever produced.
Comfort
9.5/10
How comfortable is the Maybach EQS SUV? The Maybach EQS SUV is supremely comfortable. It takes full advantage of near-silent EV propulsion and provides its occupants with a serene driving environment. This comes with the Maybach-specific driving mode, which optimizes comfort for backseat passengers and keeps things as smooth as can be.
Backseat passengers have an experience unlike anything else on the road. Independent climate controls for everyone, massaging seats that recline with a footrest — the list goes on and on. The cherry on top is some of the best noise control of any cabin in a car today.
Interior
9/10
How’s the interior? The Maybach EQS SUV interior is sensory overload in the best way possible. The back seat especially is a sight to take in with every comfort feature imaginable. Most functions in the car are controlled through screens, and while the number of commands is overwhelming, everything is pretty easy to figure out after a few tries. Rear passengers are treated to huge space, including automatic leg rests. On the passenger side, you can recline the seat to stretch almost completely out.
Up front, the driving position provides a great view ahead, with lots of adjustability for the seat and the wheel. Visibility is good in all directions with large windows all around. There are running boards to help you get into the SUV, though for taller people it's easier just to step over them.
How’s the tech? All Mercedes EQS SUVs now come standard with the new dash-spanning Hyperscreen. We were already fans of the previous 12.8-inch tablet display but, hey, upgrade! The Hyperscreen is a lot to take in, and for some it might feel like too much. In either case, Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system is also one of the best for voice controls and personalization capabilities. There are a lot of menus and settings, but most buyers should be able to learn the system without much trouble. The Burmester 4D sound system with Dolby Atmos is phenomenal.
As we've come to expect from Mercedes, the EQS SUV's advanced driver aids are excellent. The adaptive cruise control and lane centering systems operate smoothly and can be used in almost every situation. We experienced no false alarms in our testing.
Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Maybach EQS SUV is a bit compromised when it comes to storage space in the trunk. Because the rear seats are pushed back to offer more legroom, the cargo area is only 15.5 cubic feet. That's about half of what you'd find in an EQS 450+ SUV. The Maybach GLS SUV offers a bit more at 18.4 cubes. That said, there is small-item storage all over the Maybach EQS SUV, including between the two rear seats with the extra center console.
There are child safety seat anchor points in the second row and there's so much room that a rear-facing seat won't bother anyone, but we don't really see Maybach owners having child seats buckled in the exec-status second row.
How are the range and efficiency? The Maybach EQS 680 SUV has an EPA-estimated range of 280 miles. In our Edmunds EV Range Test we observed 368 miles, which is a massive overperformance. It did 31% better than the EPA figure and was much more efficient in the process than expected. The Maybach used 36.8 kilowatts of energy to travel 100 miles, about 16% better than advertised (EPA estimate of 44 kWh/100 miles).
For road trips, the Maybach has a DC fast-charging capability of up to 200 kilowatts according to Mercedes. We recorded a peak power of 211 kW, maintaining an impressive average power of 175 kW over the duration of charge from 10% to 80%. This, combined with the EQS SUV's efficient energy use, means it is one of the best luxury SUVs for quickly charging and gaining range for long trips.
Value
8/10
Is the Maybach EQS SUV a good value? With an as-tested price of nearly $200,000, the Maybach EQS SUV is one of the most expensive EVs on sale today. That said, it's actually quite the bargain compared to Rolls-Royce's and Bentley's options. It's also true that this is the only game in town for an ultra-luxury electric SUV. As you'd expect from a Maybach, the build quality and interior fit and finish are among the best of any car on sale today.
Mercedes offers the same warranty as it does with other EQS SUV models. That's four years/ 50,000 miles of coverage and a 10-year battery warranty.
Wildcard
8/10
The Maybach EQS SUV is one of the most comfortable ways to get from point A to B on four wheels. Whether you're driving it every day or being shuttled around and using the back seat, the Maybach EQS is wonderful through and through. It lacks the outright personality of the gas-powered Maybach options, but the EQS SUV still delivers on everything you'd expect from the brand.
Which Maybach EQS SUV does Edmunds recommend?
With just one trim level, there's not much to recommend. But what fun would a stock Maybach be? In that spirit, we'd take our EQS 680 SUV and add the mini-fridge to keep the cheese and caviar cold, the folding tables to enjoy said delicacies on the move, and the Nappa leather upgrade to better sleep off our digestive indulgences.
