The 2023 EQS SUV impressed us with its high levels of comfort, luxury and technology. On top of that, it has plenty of range. This big Mercedes is expensive, but overall we think it's justified considering all of the features and refinement you get.

Pros
- Premium luxury interior
- Competitive range estimates
- High levels of comfort
- Decent third-row passenger space
Cons
- Smaller-than-average cargo capacity

What's new
- The EQS SUV is a new all-electric three-row luxury SUV

Overview
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is the largest all-electric vehicle in the carmaker's lineup. This three-row luxury SUV is similar in size to its gasoline-powered GLS equivalent, but its styling is shaped with greater emphasis on aerodynamics. The rounded corners and sleeker shape contribute greatly to the EQS' efficiency, helping it to achieve between 285 and 305 miles of estimated range, which is comparable to its few rivals.

Inside, the EQS SUV delivers everything you'd expect from a premium luxury SUV. The layout is similar to other electric models in Mercedes' lineup, with a large tablet-like infotainment touchscreen attracting a lot of attention. There's also the optional all-glass dashboard Hyperscreen that adds a definite wow factor with its futuristic aesthetic, but we suggest skipping it because of its distracting reflections. Excellent materials quality and a sturdy construction are defining Mercedes characteristics and are on full display here too.
Of course none of this comes cheaply, and the EQS SUV is one of the more expensive all-electric SUVs with a starting price above $100,000. That's almost $30,000 more than the GLS, making it difficult, if not impossible, to recoup that premium in fuel savings over many years. Most EQS shoppers will be more motivated by driving an environmentally friendly vehicle anyway, and two years of free 30-minute charges on the Electrify America network can certainly mitigate that hefty starting price.
There aren't many rivals in the three-row EV class, and each has its own niche and personality. The EQS should appeal to those seeking ultimate luxury, while the Rivian R1S gains a following with its impressive off-road capabilities. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model X opts for novelty with its awkward rear gullwing doors. There's also the smaller two-row BMW iX for those who don't need as much space. And Kia's intriguing EV9 will be in showrooms by year's end. But if you need to shuttle six adults around in pampered luxury, the EQS SUV is the most well-rounded choice in this limited group.

8.4
out of 10
We drove the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8/10
How does the EQS SUV drive? We tested the base version of the EQS SUV, which is the EQS 450+. At our test track, it proved to be pretty slow by luxury EV standards, needing 6.3 seconds to reach 60 mph. But there's still enough power here to make routine driving stress-free, and the more powerful EQS SUV 450 4Matic and 580 versions are available should you want quicker acceleration. We were also impressed with this SUV's easy-to-drive nature as well as its relatively nimble handling and strong emergency braking capabilities.
Comfort
9/10
How comfortable is the EQS SUV? The EQS SUV is supremely comfortable. It takes full advantage of near-silent EV propulsion and provides its occupants with a serene driving environment. Our test vehicle had the optional Acoustic Comfort package that includes sound-reducing windows, and we highly recommend getting it. Ride comfort is another strength for the EQS. Our test vehicle was pretty unfazed by bumps and ruts on the road.
Three-zone climate control is standard, but four- and five-zone (with the optional third row of seating) systems are available. The climate controls are pretty easy to use, and airflow from the vents is excellent.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? The EQS 450+ SUV we tested did not come with the brand's big Hyperscreen layout, but we think the standard 12.8-inch tablet-style screen is still a great interface. Most of the controls are digital, which is not our preference, but there are a myriad of shortcuts that allow quick access to settings you might regularly change. For its size, the EQS SUV offers good all-around visibility thanks to a commanding driving position, which is augmented by a crisp surround-view camera system.
Occupants will find more than enough space to stretch out, especially those in the back seat. The EQS is available with a third row, which our test SUV did not have. Getting into the EQS is just as easy as it is to get comfortable thanks to wide opening doors and no obstructions. We would recommend you pass on the optional running boards. Our shorter drivers didn't find them helpful, and our taller drivers routinely clipped the boards with their shins.

Technology
9/10
How’s the tech? Our test vehicle, an EQS 450+, was not equipped with Mercedes' new dash-spanning Hyperscreen but instead had the standard 12.8-inch tablet display. Our team was split as to which system they preferred but even this basic system offers bright, impressive graphics and plenty of useful shortcuts. Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system is also one of the best for voice controls and personalization capabilities. There are a lot of menus and settings, but most buyers should be able to learn the system without much trouble. Even the standard 15-speaker Burmester audio system impresses.
One nifty feature is the available dashcam. It's nicely integrated into the windshield and allows for in-car playback as well as the option to save to a flash drive. As we've come to expect from Mercedes, the EQS SUV's advanced driver aids are excellent. The adaptive cruise control and lane centering systems operate smoothly and can be used in almost every situation. We experienced no false alarms in our testing.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? The EQS SUV's cargo space is average in size. Behind the second row of seats is a decent 31 cubic feet of storage. For comparison, the BMW iX offers slightly more at 35.5 cubes. But with the second row of seats completely folded, and which lie almost flat, the EQS can hold up to 74.2 cubes. It's worth noting that if you opt for the third row of seats, cargo space behind those drops to a paltry 6.6 cubes when the seats are in use. On the upside, there is a lot of storage space for small items in the cabin, especially for front passengers.
Got small children? The EQS' doors open wide and allow for good access to the rear seat for easy safety seat installation. The car seat anchors are also easy to access under leather flaps.

Range and Efficiency
8/10
How are the range and efficiency? The EQS 450+ SUV we tested has an EPA-estimated range of 305 miles and a consumption rate of 39 kilowatt-hours of energy for every 100 miles of driving. That range estimate is pretty good for an SUV of this size, and we found the EQS 450+ can even go farther. We drove the EQS 450+ SUV (with the 21-inch wheels) a total of 360 miles on a single battery charge in our real-world range test. It also consumed slightly less energy than its EPA's estimate, using only 35.3 kWh/100 miles. An all-wheel-drive version of the EQS 450 is also available and has an EPA-estimated range of 285 miles.
The EQS SUV is equipped with a 9.6-kW onboard charger for 240-volt at home or Level 2 charging. That's a bit underpowered for a luxury EV, as most have a 11-kW charger or more. For road trips, the EQS SUV has a DC fast-charging capability of up to 200 kW, which Mercedes says can get you from 10% to 80% battery charge in a respectably quick 31 minutes.

Value
8/10
Is the EQS SUV a good value? Even though its closest competitors undercut the starting price of the EQS by tens of thousands of dollars when new, the EQS SUV still manages to seem like a good deal. How? It's not just the amount of standard equipment you get — you get a lot of it — but the impressive levels of fit and finish that is quintessential Mercedes. From wheels to paint to interior trim and upholstery, there's also a decent amount of customization on offer that you can't find in most of its rivals.
Warranties are fairly standard but Mercedes does back up the EQS' battery with a 10-year/155,000-mile warranty. Roadside assistance is included, as are two years of free maintenance. As a small bonus, you also get two years of complimentary 30-minute sessions at Electrify America fast chargers.

Wildcard
8.5/10
As an electric SUV, the EQS is a refreshing change from the norm of speed first and luxury second. The EQS, even in its entry-level 450+ guise, checks all the boxes you expect from a big Mercedes. It's supremely comfortable and blends modern technology with traditional luxury appointments in a way that few other electric SUVs can match.
2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV trim level differences
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is a four-door electric crossover with two rows of seats standard and an optional third row. There are three power levels to choose from: the single-motor rear-wheel-drive EQS 450+ (355 horsepower, 419 lb-ft of torque); the dual-motor all-wheel-drive EQS 450 4Matic (355 hp, 590 lb-ft), and the dual-motor AWD EQS 580 4Matic (536 hp, 633 lb-ft). Compare the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV trim levels in-depth.
Which EQS SUV trim does Edmunds recommend?
The entry-level EQS 450+ has plenty of power to satisfy the majority of drivers, and we'd also suggest the all-wheel-drive 450 4Matic for those in turbulent-weather regions. Likewise, the base Premium trim comes very well appointed and gets our recommendation. If you desire a feature from the higher trims, there's a good chance it's available on the lower trims as an option, so there's no fear of missing out.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV EQS 580 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
We have been enjoying our EQS Suv for just over a year now. We love the comfort it brings to your drive. The EPA rates our 580 4matic at 285 miles but we regularly get 310 to 320. We have solar panels, so all our miles covered are basically free electrons from the sun! Great massage seats. Terrific surround sound system. Room for 7. Fun light show inside and out. The only negative is … getting a fast charge if you want to take a trip. Not enough charging stations yet. It’s a great car. Highly recommended.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV EQS 450+ 4dr SUV (electric DD)
This 2023 MBZ EQS 450+ SUV is superb! The 450+ is the bottom of the trim lines for the EQS SUV's and you get everything you need and more. No one builds a coach like Mercedes and this car is no exception. Sumptuous appointments, seats that cradle your bottom like pillows, a dash-to-die-for...and last but NOT least...in 4 charges my last charge gave 387miles of range, driving in ECO, with … no appreciable loss in power. This car is MSRP sticker range rated at 305 mile charge range. That is a considerable difference from the sticker rating.
The ride is dreamy, creamy smooth, and I have had the Tesla, the Jaguar I Pace, and even a Bolt. For a curb weight of 6K lbs.+/- it is amazing how effortlessly is reaches cruising speeds in ECO mode. If you want the high torque speeds, in the Sport mode it does 0-60 in 6.1 secs: More than enough for me (AND the CHP), to enjoy.
What a next generation 'grill', near Limo leg room in spacious back seat row, and without the 3rd row 6/7th seats (optional) you could put a Holstein calf in the rear cargo space.
I think I'll get over 400mile EV range out of my next charge.
Cruise Car of the decade for sure!

The Best SUV: Smooth, Sophisticated, Luxury

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV EQS 450+ 4dr SUV (electric DD)
I have owned 4 Acura MDXs. I felt it was the best value for an SUV and I never experience any problems in the years that I owned them. The first 3 were leases and the last one was my lease that I purchased and owned for the last 6 years.
At 48000 miles and 6 years I told my wife that is was time for a new car. I did not want to buy another MDX. My neighbor has a Lincoln Aviator and I … thought that was a potential replacement for the MDX. I took it out for a test drive and loved everything about it. So it was on my short list.
I look at the Genesis GV80 but I couldn't get past buying and servicing my next luxury car from a Hyundai dealer regardless of the reviews and aesthetic. I really like that car.
Then I read about the Mercedes EQS SUV and how much they depreciated. So I went to my Mercedes dealer and took a CPO EQE 350 out for a ride. I have never driven an EV SUV prior to this and I was shocked and surprised on the refinement and overall luxury of this car. I still was not prepared to buy new or lease so I waited for the perfect time to purchase a used one.
We decided that the EQE was too small and looked for an EQS. After missing out on several amazing deals by mere hours I found one in Miami about 4 hours away. My wife and I took the trip and traded in our white 2019 MDX for 2023 Mercedes EQS 450+ SUV. Black exterior with sable grey interior. It also had the highest trim, the Pinnacle Trim, with every option except the hyper-screen.
The car had 18,000 miles and the remaining factory warranty. The original list price was over $120k and we purchased it for $47k. The had just marked it down from $55k. It was an amazing deal. This is the best SUV that we have ever owned or driven in. My wife absolutely loves, loves this car. If you can find a similar deal I don't believe you can find this amount of luxury and refinement for this price anywhere.
100% enthusiastically recommended and endorsed.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV EQS 450 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
We looked at many different EV’s. The Mustang Mach e was fun and a nice rig, we just wanted more high tech features, but worth a look if you are in the market. The Tesla Model X while the critics love it we did not, rough ride on the Midwest roads, road noise was bad, the infotainment system is quirky for anyone coming out of a common platform like our BMW X5. The buying experience at … the local store was less than desirable. So enter the EQS, fit, form and finish was superb, quality of materials well above what we looked at. Using the infotainment system and tech is a breeze. Ride is superb with seat comfort above and beyond anything we have owned in 40 years of ownership, and owned about all high end cars and SUV’s . Dealership experience was amazing! Ours is loaded up and we activated the dash cam system and the performance enhancement. The sound system makes me feel like I am at home with my MAC system. Range exceeded the published numbers as we have done over 300 miles. I know it is pricey, ours was over $122k but this justifies when you consider all aspects of the SUV, the old adage “ You Get what You Pay For”
