Over-engineered cars are not reliable
The 2001 C240 is a solid ride. Looks good,is safe,but not dependable! I am at the delearship every other month. Everyone there knows me by name. Where do I begin? Locking problems with the keys, then locking problems with the cpu. The leather de-laminated from both doors. fuel pump had to be replaced at 42000 miles. rear brake lights not working,defective SAM card. Front directional not working, defective SAM card. finally car will not start when engine is warm, the timing chain-cam sensor is defective! Most repairs were not under warranty, and averaged 800 dollars per event.
Excellent road car, poor reliabilty
Car driven all highway miles. Excellent engine and drive train. Quiet interior, low wind noise. 32 mpg w/ 6spd. Solid handling and tracking, supurb braking. Very high frequency of maintenance and expense compared to previously owed Volvos. Parking brake failed 3x, climate control 2x (and never the same as new), teleaid 1x, CD player 2x, both rear coils cracked 1x, strut bushing replaced 3x, fuel line clogged 1x, keys 1x, turn signal harness 1x, light harness 1x, oil level sensor 1x, ignition Lock and Steering Lock 1x, ELT connector 1x. The amount of service necessitated selling the car. It is a huge dissapointment as the car is a joy to drive.

WORST PURCHASE EVER
The car LOOKS great on the inside & outside, but other than that it's the worst purchase ever. I've never had so many issues from a car than this one. This was my first & last MB purchase. The issues I've had: taillights constantly go out, seats don't move anymore, ac/heather no longer work, belts broke, catalytic converter, the list goes on.
With the good, comes the bad
I bought my C240 used thinking Mercedes had a good reputation for cars that would last. Found out the hard way, maybe it used to be like that, but not these days. It was a comfortable car, good build quality, good materials, but too many problems. In the yr that I had it: $350 for the CD changer, $300 for the auto climate control control unit, $350 for a MAS air flow unit, $60 for a new MAP sensor, $850 for a windshield for the auto intermittent wipers, $200 for a lower strut, $100 for sway bar end links, $1400 for new struts, $700 for rotors and pads. Paint chips easily, rear package tray fades, dash display fades out in the summer heat. I got rid of it before something else happened.
Love-Hate this car
I bought the car in 2008 with 50k miles on it for $11,000. I traded in my 1998 Cadillac deVille for what I called my "German Experiment". The 2001 C320 has some very nice features. It handles well on the highway and the engine is bullet-proof. There are so many little things that have gone wrong. The power seat controls, the air damper that controls the vent/floor air, the rear window shade, a $900 gas pump, the 6-CD player, and more. The single-most bothersome problem is the paint. Soon after I purchased the car I noticed very small rust bubbles on the door panels and front and rear fenders. Over time they have grown to be large rust spots -the size of silver dollars and larger. What a disappointment! These are certainly not the Mercedes Benz of the 1970's and 80's. I recently went back to a Cadillac and will probably never purchase a Mercedes again. This German Experiment has failed.
