The 2024 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the largest sedan in the storied carmaker's lineup, measuring just a bit longer than the all-electric EQS and over a foot longer than the new E-Class. Historically, the S-Class has been a showcase for the latest luxury and technology features from Mercedes, though in recent years the EQS has been approaching flagship status. The big news for 2024 is the debut of the high-performance AMG S 63 E Performance variant and its unique hybrid powertrain. No matter which model you choose, you're guaranteed luxury in abundant excess.
Hands-free automated driving is becoming an expected feature in some luxury vehicles and the 2024 S-Class will be one of the few Mercedes vehicles to follow suit. The Drive Pilot system is not only hands-free, but it also allows the driver to take eyes off the road and use the central infotainment touchscreen. There are some notable limitations, though. It will initially only be available on select highways in California and Nevada and only at speeds up to 45 mph. More roadways in other states will be added, pending evaluations and approvals. Speeds are also expected to increase when Mercedes deems it appropriate. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Drive Pilot is that Mercedes will assume liability when the system is active.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been the standard-bearer of luxury for decades, but it's not the only big sedan to be considered. The Audi A8 and sportier S8 are also worthy alternatives, as is the BMW 7 Series, though the S-Class still holds an advantage with its old-school opulence. If you're seeking a healthy dose of performance there's also the Porsche Panamera, and if you're looking to make the leap to an all-electric vehicle, the Mercedes EQS, Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air are solid choices. Meanwhile, the Genesis G90 represents a more affordable and flashier substitute.
To get a more complete luxury experience, we suggest stepping up to the S 580 model. Its V8 engine has plenty of power and is also smoother and more refined than the six-cylinder variants. If you'd like to leave a stronger impression on rear passengers, we'd also upgrade to the Executive Line for additional amenities.
The 2024 S-Class is available in four trim levels: S 500, S 580 an S 580e plug-in hybrid variant and, later in the year, the AMG S 63 E Performance. An even more luxurious Mercedes-Maybach S 680 is also available, though it's reviewed separately on Edmunds. Keep reading for a rundown of the S-Class' powertrains and its most significant features and options.
The S 500 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six (442 horsepower, 413 lb-ft of torque) while the S 580 gets a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 (496 hp, 516 lb-ft). The S 580e uses the S 500's turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six paired with an electric motor, which together produce a combined 503 hp and 553 lb-ft. The 28.6-kWh battery is estimated to offer 46 miles of electric-only propulsion on a full charge and can be replenished via DC fast charging. All powertrains come mated to a nine-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive.
The AMG S 63 E Performance sports a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that is paired with an electric motor that is mounted atop the rear axle (791 hp, 1,055 lb-ft combined). Its 13.1-kWh battery should offer around 20 miles of electric range.
