This car is great -- I've owned Honda, Mercury, Nissan, Pontiac -- and I can say this car beats them all. It's extremely reliable, with most repairs only due to a car accident in which some idiot slammed into the side of me while he was exiting a gas station. Because of that accident I had to get both front-wheel bearings replaced (and of course the entire door replaced). Outside of that (and general maintenance), I've had to do the following repairs: • 28,000 miles: new brakes/rotors front-only ($375 for 2) • 49,000 miles: 4 new tires – 18” winter ($1,000) + replace LF wheel bearing (warranty) • 53,000 miles: fix corroded/leaking rear pipe exhaust ($90) • 64,000 miles: RF wheel bearing ($350) • 71,000 miles: replace AC hose ($220) • 78,000 miles: repair muffler flange ($142) • 83,000 miles: new brakes/rotors both front and back ($750 for all 4) • 98,000 miles: replace the CA07-20-370H Vacuum Tube ($180) • 102,000 miles: spark plugs ($330 for the 3.7L engine because they have to remove the block as 1/2 of them are under plenum) Technically things like brakes, spark plugs, and tires fall under general maintenance, but I thought I’d list them to show how expensive some of the ‘general maintenance’ is! And the wheel bearings needed replacing due to the accident I was in. So if you remove all these items, the true repairs have only been $90 + $220 + $142 + $180 = $632 total over 100,000 miles. And honestly, it rides extremely well even to this day. You can read about performance and handling in other people’s reviews – I don’t have much new to say about that. I like that it looks sporty, has a bit of punch (with the V6 engine), and drives OK in the snow (with snow tires). But reliability is just as important to me. And the small things add up. Like the fact that I have never had to replace headlights, only replaced the battery once (at 50K – though I’m about to replace it again), only had to replace front brakes twice and rear brakes once, and no other major repairs outside of my accident…it’s seriously night and day when compared to every other vehicle I’ve owned. Those other cars always seemed to have something going wrong with them and were constantly in the shop – especially the Mercury Sable and Pontiac Grand AM. Bottom line: Great car, some maintenance is very expensive, but overall doesn’t need a lot of repairs even up to 100,000 miles. If you want something that looks nice, handles well, and is reliable at a reasonable price – you won’t go wrong with Mazda.

Excellent car with only minor issues

Purchased our car new. I did all of the maintenance (brakes, oil etc) and was only at the dealer for recalls and once for a dealer diagnostic for an alarm issue (2017 going off randomly). I replaced the two front door locking mechanisms that had gotten water in them over the years. The car has 130k and is still in super condition and rides and drives perfectly. So good in fact I gave it to my daughter after purchasing a 2018 Mazda 3 touring for myself (February 2019). The recalls were for the rubber buttons on the door handles, the dashboard that got soft in the sun and the the front sub frame (mine was almost rotten through)that was replaced in January of 2019 at the full expense of Mazda. Mazda even paid for a rental for over two months. Very happy experience.

Bought used with 8K miles. 6sp Manual fun to drive but could be geared taller. Very close ratios, do not use all 6 in normal driving. But if you want to thrash it, it's fun. Impressed with trunk. Headed on trip in old minivan with 5 people, but it broke down. Switched all people and gear to Mazda and went on 3Kmi road trip. Immense trunk swallowed luggage with ease. Got up to 33 mpg @75 mph. Enough room in back to prevent fratricide. Came back from that trip very happy with vehicle.

Exterior design is very attractive. Excellent handling, good pickup from the 4cyl engine. Could be better on the fuel economy but not too bad. Ride is well controlled but it can be a bit busy. Decent room inside, good design to the dash board. Interior quality is a mixed bag. Some parts of the dash and doors are very high end but other parts are cheap feeling. Leather quality is decent, if a little stiff feeling, but it smells good though. Xenon lighting is excellent. I would suggest this car for those who like spirited driving, if you drive it softly it may leave you a bit cold.

Fun sporty Mazda with lots of features

My wife bought the 2009 Mazda 6i loaded with leather, sunroof, Bose stereo, everything but Navigation. She loves the car and finally understands why some people are "car people". Lot's of interesting features (a switch to adjust the headlight aim, auto wipers, ac, lights, and locks. The car now has 43k miles and has only needed tires and brakes. It has never broken down, the interior and exterior are perfect. I would like the speedo to be larger with easier to see numbering (hard to tell if you are going 75, 72, etc.), and would like the gas mileage to be just a bit better. At 75 mph, the tach is showing about 2,500 rpm. This all said, the ride is comfortable and firm, seats are good. Update: The car now has 58k miles. I forgot to add that the red lighting for the buttons is hard to see at night. I wish they were white like other cars. Still very dependable. I just did rear brakes recently and it was very easy. The car is holding up very nicely and has yet to have any repairs (besides a battery, tires, brakes and normal oil changes).
