Renegade is Cute but Loaded with Problems

2015 Jeep Renegade Sport 4dr SUV 4WD (1.4L 4cyl Turbo 6M)

We have just over 13k miles now on our 2015 Renegade Sport 4x4 with the 2.4 liter engine and the 9 speed auto tranny. It had quality issues from the start and we simply do not have much faith in it. We also own a 2008 Jeep Commander that has been an excellent vehicle both on and off road. Our Renegade has suffered from wind noise at the driver's door since new. The transmission is sluggish. It has randomly died in traffic for no reason (guessing electronic issues). The door locks work most of the time but not always. The brakes squeal when moving at slow speeds or in reverse. Since it is built by Fiat in Italy, parts take forever to get if they are available at all. It is a cute little car but not one I would really recommend to someone who hasn't bought yet. The Renegade is more Fiat than it is Jeep in my opinion. I would be very hesitant to take it out into the mountains of Colorado (where we go in our Commander) for fear that it might not get us back out. If you want a Jeep, go with a Wrangler or maybe a Cherokee. I would recommend passing on the Renegade...I would if I had it to do over again. Update: Now at 19.5k miles, our Renegade is in the shop for the 4th time with continuing wind noise and window/door trim issues. The dealer appears to finally be taking it seriously now that we have opened a case with FCA and are discussing our options with a lemon law attorney. If they fail to repair it this time, we may file it as a lemon and see if we can force FCA to buy it back. We would trade out of the Renegade into a Wrangler in a heartbeat if the dealer would give us what is owed on it. Unfortunately that is likely going to require legal action. If you are considering the Renegade, I would encourage you to seriously reconsider and go with an actual Jeep and not what is in reality a Fiat. The Renegade is cute to look at but it is poor quality and riddled with problems. Update: Now at 27.5k miles. After last update, and a total of 7 times in service, the dealer finally figured out that the driver's side window was malformed/warped and that was causing all the wind noise/trim issues in the driver's side front door. They replaced the window and the wind noise was solved. No other major issues to report. Upgrading our star rating to a 3. Wish we had a Jeep dealer within 50 miles that knew the definition of customer service. Our local GMC/Chevy dealer (which is absolutely outstanding) takes care of most of our maintenance needs now. Update: 40k miles now and we are out of warranty. Fingers crossed. Not much new to report other than the radio has issues periodically. To reset it we have to disconnect a battery cable. Just one more quirky thing on the 2015 Renegade.

2 Months into ownership. Here are my thoughts -- The Good - I took it on some tough terrain and it did excellent the short overall length made maneuvering easy and fun. Went up and down some crazy steep angels (to the point that I thought I might tip it) without any problems. Love the interior look and feel. I have also got quite a few comments from men and women about it which is always nice. Lots of headroom ( I am 6' 5" and have the mySky and still have plenty of headroom). Plenty of room in the back seat for 8 and 10 year olds. The Bad - don't open the the sunroof portion of mysky when there is morning dew... you will get wet (it just poured in). With both parts of the mySky off going at highway speeds you will need to roll down the windows at least halfway or there will be significant rattling of the center bar (portion in between the panels). The gas tank is small and the fuel mileage is just OK so frequent fill ups are a the result. I have had the 4 wd out of service light come on once (turning on and off the vehicle made it go off but it concerned me a bit). Conclusion - This is my first Jeep and I am still having a lot of fun with it and would buy it again if I can to do it over. I did test drive the latitude (really different feel, try both there are different animals) and would say Trailhawk or bust on this one. The Trailhawk however is priced at the upper limit that I think Jeep could pull off (not a lot of extra value).

Tight, secure, easy to get into and out of

I'm 76, wife is 70-- we picked the Renegade Limited as a nice compromise between the Chrysler 300 (which I'd prefer, but find it hard to enter and exit) and the German Smart car (which was a little too small and not that easy to enter and exit). This Jeep Renegade Limited proved very easy to enter/exit, and the luxury features which I love are there too. I've owned sports cars, so I can appreciate thr Renegade's tight and responsive handling-- full throttle on a curving freeway on-ramp lets you feel the g's, but the Renegade gives a secure, no-slip road hug. Have owned for 16 months now and continuing to find nice features usually found only on more expensive vehicles-- like the back-up camera and collision warning system, awesome navigation/entertainment console, remote start, anti-theft festures, the list goes on and on. My wife says she feels more secure and safe in the Renegade Limited then any previous car-- airbags everywhere, seats that hold you surprisingly comfortably, and seat backs that would actually prevent whiplash due to position of headrest. I would not limit this model as only for young adults... this old fart is really liking his Renegade!

I loved the car at first, but I've had nothing but trouble with in the first month of ownership. Constant electrical issues have had it in the shop three times. Door locks failed and ignition system failed and had to be replaced. Car was towed twice to dealership. In shop total of ten days. Beware of Fiat product bearing Jeep label. Beginning to think I made a very expensive mistake in purchasing this car.

I actually have owned a 2015 Renegade 4x4 Latitude since July 2015. It has been a joy to drive. I've put over 17K miles on it with no issues. I love the features and the interior design is fantastic. It has a quiet and smooth ride, and performed flawlessly in the snow. I've driven it on several road trips of 5+ hours with complete comfort, and the tech features, electronics really make it feel upscale. The instrument panel has the feel and look of high-end camping gear. And I regularly get 40+mpg on the highway, averaging 33 mpg on the long road trips. I love this little Jeep! SEPT 2016 UPDATE - My Jeep Renegade still performs flawlessly at 31K+ miles. People are pleasantly surprised when they get inside. I truly look forward to driving my Jeep every day.

I've been reading these reviews and honestly I had to chime in. I have a 2015 Latitude 4x4 with the 1.4 turbo 6-speed manual. I have about 10,500 miles on it so far, have had it since February 2016. I've had it to the dealer two times so far, but only for oil changes ( I choose to change the oil every 5k miles by choice...but that's me). These reviews that people are putting out here are terrible, it's like they didn't test drive the vehicle. How could you not notice that the vehicle doesn't fit you well, or "blind spots"? To me this Jeep is a fishbowl, with big windows all around, so I don't know what blind spot they are referring to. I love this little Jeep, I'm getting 31+ MPG combined and have had 0 problems so far. Also as far as fitting in the vehicle, I'm 6'4" and I don't have a problem. That's about it, don't let the reviews here scare you off somehow...it really is a great little vehicle.

researched before I bought, lots of things the salesman had no idea about yet because it was so new, but I knew. Love to drive it, people love to look at it, I actually have the 2.4L 9 speed auto 4x4 Latitude but that was not an option in the drop down only the limited had it on my choices here so I picked the limited but I actually have the latitude. I wanted a trailhawk but the reviews turned me off with the interior noise, rougher ride and gas mileage so I fell comfortably into a latitude. The design is awesome inside and out, interior is convenient and roomy for a small suv. I got the sand color and love it, lighter in person than on the web site.

I had a rocky start with this vehicle but I’m glad I powered through the first few months. It was completely dead 2x having to tow it to the garage. (Paid for by the dealer). Was pretty upset being that it was a brand new car. The problem turned out to be really minor. The battery had a bad connection. It had been checked before but the service supervisor took over and found the problem. Since the problem was finally uncovered and fixed I’ve had no problems at all with my Renegade. Plus all expenses were covered by the dealer. For me it was just inconvenience. So let’s call that a little blip. Buy one! They are great!

This car had good to very good reviews, so I purchased the trail hawk edition, and so far its been a generally positive experience. The Jeep corporation however, has limited this car with a few 'buts'. The car has decent gas mileage BUT it needs frequent fill-ups due to a small gas tank. The engine is fine for the car BUT the transmission is terrible, shifting into higher gears rapidly and giving a feeling of being underpowered. The only good news on that is the gears can be shifted manually from the shifter and that works well! The insturment panel is basic and informative, the Sirius XM radio is terrific....BUT the bluetooth took some time to program for and did not work that well? Finally, the off-roading ability of this car is excellent. We took it in the sand at Cape Cod National Seashore and it took on the sand dunes with no problems! I'm a bit apprehensive about trusting Jeep because of poor reputation for reliability and trade in value, BUT I would say we're off to a good start with no big problems so far.

Let me get this out of the way first: if you want a Wrangler for the specific purpose of off roading...buy one. If you want a car with more comfort at the cost of some off roading ability...save your pennies and buy a Cherokee Trailhawk instead. My wife has one, and it is superior in every way to my Renegade with the exception of the price. Now, will the Renegade do very light off roading/two tracking? Yes. Is it really comparable to one of the bigger Jeeps? Not in my experience. With that being said, it's the best thing out there that is a daily driver that can leave the pavement for under 30 grand. The car is pretty nimble on the turns, but it's not particularly fast, nor is it particularly good on gas mileage. However, through inclement weather conditions (including Michigan snow) it handles quite nice, so I consider those an acceptable trade off. The front seats are roomy enough for two big guys, but don't plan on putting anyone in the backseat. Overall, this little Jeep is definitely worth a look, and frankly any negative about it can be said for every other mini crossover in the segment (small back seat, lack of cargo space, small engine etc). If you are an outdoors type on a budget the Renegade just might be your next car.

After owning a Subaru wagon for many years, we want to get something different and with more style. Subaru is just SO boring! Another thing is, we don't want a CVT. We love the Renegade for the following reasons: 1. The styling - It's flat out posh! It's very well put together and it has a lot of thoughtful touches throughout. 2. Comfort Level - This has one of the widest cabins and the leather seats are very comfortable. The suspension is very good and manages to dampen all the potholes we have in the Northeast. 3. Convenience Features - it has all the bells and whistles without the premium price. UConnect is great and I love the bluetooth setup and backup camera.

I'm LOVING my Jeep Renegade! I bought a yellow Trailhawk and it's been so much fun to drive! It's super comfortable, I've had no problems connecting my iPhone and am able to easily make phone calls via bluetooth. I'm really enjoying how smooth the ride is and how quiet things are. I can barely hear any road noise. The hill assist is fantastic, as I sometimes get stuck at a red light on a very steep hill. I never roll back now. There's plenty of head room, which is nice because my husband is tall. I'm getting the same quality gas mileage as my 2013 Rav 4 I had before my Renegade, which I'm happy with. I have not had a single electrical malfunction or engine problem (knock on wood!). I really don't have any bad things to say about it. I'm very picky when it comes to vehicles and I seriously haven't been able to come up with one yet about the Renegade Trailhawk.

Best "Domestic" Cross-over available.

dougiew, 09/14/2015
2015 Jeep Renegade Limited 4dr SUV 4WD (2.4L 4cyl 9A)
24 of 27 people found this review helpful

I never owned a domestic vehicle and never thought I would either, until I saw the Renegade. I took a test ride and that's all it took for me. For reference, I owned 2 Honda, 1 Toyota, and 1 VW in the past 11 years and they were all brand new. I was looking for a AWD/4x4 vehicle for the nasty winter commute here in the Northeast and occasional camping trips. My shopping criteria was a short list: Good fuel mileage and some mild off-road capability. Only a handful of small SUV fit the bill. My choices were between Subaru XV Crosstrek and Jeep Renegade. I am not going to write much about the Subaru but all I am going to say is... under-powered and lack of details, compared to the Renegade. Interior- Unlike most domestic vehicles, there a lot of details in the interior design, such as illuminated cup holders and center console. No squeaky panels, no saggy seat cushions, no one-piece dash or one-piece door panel. Seats are as comfortable and supportive as my 2008 Passat. Forward visibility is great, similar to driving a Cube/ Soul. Road noise is minimal considering it as a SUV. The instrument panel with built-in LCD screen is very informative with intuitive lay out. I was able to get used to in within minutes of driving it. Infotainment system with touch screen is very intuitive and easy to navigate while driving. I love how the car can stream music from my phone via Bluetooth without touching my phone. Sound quality is also impressive considering it is just standard equipment on a "entry level" vehicle. Exterior- Paint quality is good. On-par with all my previous vehicles. Plenty of design details. I love the overall design of the vehicle. Engine- Relatively quiet for a "domestic" vehicle; it roars quite a bit under hard acceleration, in a good way. I know, it's an Italian Fiat Multiair engine! Plenty of power to pass other vehicles on the interstate. Transmission is probably the biggest let-down of the vehicle. There is a noticeable lag and hesitation in gear change under "spirited" acceleration, however, it's smooth enough and tolerable. Performance- Agile would be the best word to describe its performance. Steering is accurate and nicely weighed although lacks feedbacks of a sport sedan or luxury crossover. Body-roll under spirited driving is well controlled... especially considering it's a JEEP! I have not yet driven in snow yet. However, I drove it off the dealership lot in pouring rain. I got the chance to push it a little bit through some back roads in heavy rain. Not once I felt the traction control or ABS kicked in, and the vehicle didn't slide during sharp turns. Body panels did not make any rattling noise on rough road surfaces. Fuel economy- In the past 300 miles, I was able to achieve 27 miles average. I was getting 30mpg on the interstate around 65mph. I would expect gas mileage slightly improve as the engine breaks in. Not as good as the Subaru but the Renegade does have 40 extra HP and 400cc bigger engine. Overall- I am very impressed with how Jeep come out with such a great product. It's a perfect blend of ruggedness, performance, comfort, and style. Let's face it, we all want a Wrangler at some point in life but can't justify the fuel efficiency, comfort, or practicality for everyday commute. And Jeep finally gave us a perfect compromise. Trade-in value and reliability are the only 2 concerns I have at this point and only time will tell.

From H2 to Trail Hawk

Robert Vonch III, 07/13/2015

First off don't judge the size of this Jeep by the outside. When my wife and I first got on the Jeep lot, we both looked at each other and said that's too small! But once inside this thing is a roomy beast. Lots of leg and head room for those both tall and wide, seats are amazing and grab you comfortably. The ride is smooth with minimal body roll on the corners. It is a 4-cylinder so don't expect v-8 thrust but paired with the 9-speed auto transmission it does its duty. We had been searching for something to replace our aging Hummer H2 that was not another cookie cutter cute ute or some boring suv from the import giants that are more like cars. Also a consideration was price and off-road capability, the Renegade was right on point and addressed all of these in the Trail Hawk edition for us. Since bringing ours home, we have averaged 30 mpg and coming from the 6 liter H2 was a breath of fresh air on the wallet! The technology is also great with 2 USB ports, 2 LCD screens, a true 120v home outlet, Bluetooth, backup camera and oh yes a full-size spare with matching wheel! Yup wheel and all! The little Easter eggs are cool but get a bit cheesy like Ciao Baby! Spider by the gas filler. We have not taken it truly off roading yet but it did handle some good deep water during the flooding we had in SW Missouri recently. The off-road dial is very easy to use and intuitive and with the Trail Hawk you can go into 4wd low and lock the differential that is nice to have. I did not get the removable roof panels as I really don't use removable tops or moonroofs anyway, just another water failing point. If you are looking for a small good looking capable SUV that's fun to drive then this is for you! If you like white walls and vanilla ice cream, then look to the same old boring ute's like CRV, Rouge, Soul, etc. all of which will look very nice stuck in the mud...LOL!

Ok, this is not your Honda CRV. I've had 4 CRV's and 2 Accords in 35 years. They were boringly dependable and just that. When i first saw pics of the Renegade I knew it was a matter of time. I am a firm believer of poaching good ideas who needs to reinvent the wheel so to speak. I love my new (3 weeks) Renegade TH. I knew it would be different than the CRV, it is not a vehicle for someone with a glass butt. Here are my takes on some ways to make it so much better. Replace that driver seat, copy the Buick Regal seat why don't you, this is a sure weekly visit to the chiropractor. That rear view camera needs to be cleaned up, copy what the CRV does, clear, wider and closer angles so practical. Also, put a women in on the interior design section, no places to put coins. There is easily a couple spots up front for this. And some storage nooks in the back into the sidewalls and a cable net to secure stuff, you left the hooks for it but no net and on a $31000 car just do it. Love the full spare tire. The navigation needs a lot of work. Why does the road map show both sides of the highway choked with traffic when only one side is busy? Why did my iPhone disconnect from the bluetooth within a week? Why is only one fog light on at a time? All the chatter about the lack of pickup in speed honestly if you need to go 0-60 in 4.3 seconds buy a Porsche, this is a Jeep dumb head. The seat fix is the first thing Jeep needs to do, the rest should be on the front burner.

Where do I begin...

When we purchased this Renegade in May we were ecstatic. Then the problems began, the moment we drove it off the lot. A coil burnt up in the motor before we could get a mile down the road. It took them a month to repair the coil because Italy kept sending the wrong parts. Then the window seal was broken and we could not figure out what the noise was for the longest time! I took a week for them to repair that. Then the computer has been going hay-wire, telling me that I need to service my four-wheel drive (That has never been turned on), my power steering needed to be service (It didn't even have 5,000 miles on it), my transmission needed to be serviced (we had barely had the car for 5 months, I also drive like a grandma). And last but not least, we locked the car at Wal-mart and it decided it wasn't going to unlock again. Thank God we don't have key less entry or we probably would have had to call a friend to come and pick us up. I'm extremely disappointed in this car considering I've been begging my fiance to get me one since the concept for it came out.

I went for the TrailHawk as it had the 4 wheel drive system I wanted. The lower/other models did not. I can only speak for the Trailhawk and I think it's great. The only complaint is the the transmission on the highway hesitates and shifts gears a second or two too slowly.

We wanted to buy our daughter a cute but dependable car. We bought a 2015 Jeep Renegade with less than 100 miles. Before it even reached 1000 miles the brakes were squeaking. Finally around 1500 miles we had the front brakes totally replaced. Not more than 2 months later we had to take it back for the back brakes to be totally replace with only 500 additional miles on the car. Now, three months later, we are getting ready to take it back because the electric locks will not work. On all three occasions the service department says, "Yes, we've been seeing a few Renegades with this problem". So much for dependable.

Engine Seized at 1200 Miles

Bought the car on November 28th, 2015. On January 5th the engine seized. Had it towed to the dealership that day and they had no one to work on it until the 13th. They spent the day tearing it down and the next day was when they found the issue. Supposedly a bearing was spinning in the engine and caused it to seize. They ordered my "new engine" on the 14th and informed me my engine was scheduled to be put in on the 25th. My husband went to check on it the 26th and the service department had told me the wrong day. My engine is supposed to be put in on the 29th. I am a week away from a month of not having my brand new vehicle. I made a request for repayment of the loan payment for January. They will not even consider it until I have the vehicle back in my possession. This is the second vehicle that has had to be towed back to the dealership after roughly a month of owning it. The first was my husband's Rubicon with a cam shaft position sensor issue. I will never own another Chrystler product again.

Update 12/21/2016: Still happy with the Renegade! It has 6000 miles on it now--purchased new in May 2016. Only issue so far has been a loose wire to a running light--intermittent (3x) dash warning over 6 months of driving. Took it to the dealer yesterday, and they say it's fixed--no warnings driving home. The Renegade has been my daily driver, and mpg has exceeded the manufacturer's estimate and mine! In mixed driving it reliably gets about 33 mpg, and recently averaged 43mpg on a strictly highway trip. On the return trip, we crawled home in bumper to bumper Los Angeles traffic--trip should have taken an hour and 10 minutes but took 2.5 hours--we still averaged 39 mpg for the round trip! My concern was that I would be spending more on gas driving the Renegade instead of the VW Beetle it replaced--not so. My husband likes it too; he likes that it can "get out of its own way", and is pleased with the handling, convenience, comfort--so much so that he agreed to sell his aging but sound VW GTI and drive the Renegade as his primary car when I got the opportunity to purchase an E-Golf to use for my short work commute and save even more on costs. So far, so good with the Renegade! ______________________________________________________________________________________ The Renegade's size and exterior styling caught my eye when visiting the dealer to have a Ram truck serviced over a year ago. I walked over to look, and--it was quite upscale and European looking inside! I then walked around to look at the window sticker--it was MADE IN EUROPE--Italy to be precise. Was it possible that this confirmed European car driver could actually purchase an American car as a daily driver? (The Ram truck only pulls a horse trailer and goes to the hardware store). I was not in need of a new vehicle, but I kept thinking about the Renegade. Fast forward about 18 months, I looked the Renegade up online just out of curiosity to check reviews, and found huge manufacturer and dealer incentives on the remaining 2015s in stock--I thought, oh my, I can get a brand new Jeep (actually a Fiat) for about the same price paid for a new 2001 VW Beetle years ago! Another big plus for me was the availability of a manual transmission. I was sorely tempted at his point despite the VW's reliability, and headed for the Jeep dealer. Let m assure you that going to an American car dealer was quite a step for me! The first dealer did not have what I was looking for, but the second dealer did--I'd been doing all the shopping and research, and was quite sure we were going home with the Renegade, so I asked my husband to come along to look at the Renegade and drive the VW home. He was amazed at the good value and quality of the Renegade! The Renegade continues to please--30+mpg in combined driving, and the car is very willing to move--engine and manual trans are smooth! It is very quiet and roomy inside--good sized adults will fit in the back seat, and simply easy to deal with--it actually is a utility vehicle. It does not rattle or have wind noise. It has some nice touches inside like soft lighting, the seats are comfortable, and I'm really enjoying the SiriusXM radio trial. I am thrilled to not have to drive a 50 mile round trip for service since I have two Jeep dealers close by. I have not owned the vehicle long enough to comment on durability, but I believe the build quality is good. A family member who worked at a high level job for another car manufacturer looked at it and was impressed by the quality. At this point I am very satisfied with the Renegade. I keep my vehicles for a long time, drive them carefully, and have them maintained on schedule. I expect that this vehicle will last.

Should have bough a different vehicle

I come from a Jeep family and this is NOT a Jeep - the new Renegade is a flat ouT LEMON! The electrical system is as faulty as it can possibly get. Door locks went out before the first oil change - had to climb in through the trunk to get into my car. At the dealer and he said it will be 2 days before they even look at it. Asked what the issue "could be" and the look the service manager gave me was grim, then he said, "could be anything". I bought a brand new car because I didn't want used car problems. Aside from the electrical sysyem, which in itself will cause u to take a crowbar to the thing, it's noisey, sluggish, slightly uncomfortable, it handles like it's 10ft off the ground instead of 2ft, the turbo kicks in only after you have abused it into the 3,500 rpm range, the uconnect system is faulty, it has HUGE blindspots, and is overall not a good value. Also, the dealerships (bought mine at Nyle Maxwell in Austin Texas) have no - NO idea on how to fix this vehicle. It's like they don't have a clue how to fix the car at all. I swear this vehicle runs on Windows from 2000, and gives you the blue screen of death. In retrospect I should have bought an old beater or a bicycle. At least I would know what the issue is. I will never, ever buy another Jeep or Crystal er product again. Ever. NEVER. They are crooks, selling a faulty product with cool advertising - nothing more. Before you buy one of these pieces of absolute dog crap, look elsewhere. You may think you will be happy in this vehicle, but trust me in less than 60 days you will be at the dealership wondering how you got into this mess and you'll be stuck with a lemon and a fat monthly payment. Overall I'm greatly disppointed and I feel ripped off.

I purchased my Renegade in August and for the first two months it was great. Then the brakes started squealing, and I mean loudly, every time I went to back up after the car had sat for any length of time. The transmission started to go, then hesitate, before jerking forward and continuing every time I go from reverse to drive. Took it in for service and they said they did computer upgrades, but had no idea about the brakes, since they couldn't replicate the noise (car hadn't sat any length of time when I took it in). After leaving the dealer, I discovered the so-called "updates" have now made it to where my emergency brake automatically engages every time the vehicle is put into park (totally NOT needed on an automatic!!), and now my rear wiper will sporadically come on by itself when the front wipers are turned on. Now my brakes are starting to also squeal going forward and still trying to get the dealership to fix these issues. I would suggest waiting to buy this vehicle until they get all these bugs worked out. Just google "Jeep Renegade Brake Squeal" and you will see this is a very common complaint. Would really love this Renegade if it acted like a brand new quality vehicle!! Just an update: My transmission was just replaced under warranty, and now is worse then the old one! It does not want to shift into 9th gear, my gas mileage has gone from an average of 26 - to 31 mpg, down to a high of 22 mpg. Downshifts hard, doesn't shift correctly, sounds louder....I could go on and on. Fair warning, don't waste your money, and forget about a good resale value too!!!!!!!!!!

My Renegade is now back at the shop for the 4th time. They replaced the top end of my engine, transmission work, car locked me out (electrical). Now it's back in for engine and transmission problems. The dealership (Rockaway Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram) is horrible. They are now on their 3rd Service Manager in the short time I've owned this lemon. I even spoke with people at corporate and they really aren't helpful either. On one occasion the car came to a halt when I was getting on the pkwy. I almost got crushed thank God for the alert truck driver behind me. The service depts favorite line is code upgrade. I can go on about how bad this jeep , but it falls on deaf ears.

2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 4dr SUV 4WD (2.4L 4cyl 9A)
27 of 32 people found this review helpful

Let me start this review by stating that I just traded in my 2015 Trailhawk after 10 months of ownership and 11,485 miles, and I couldn't be happier! I entered my purchase back in April 2015 thinking this was going to be the answer to my many vehicle needs: 4x4/offroad capability, adequate cargo space for trips to the beach with the dog, great gas mileage for my weekly commutes to sales calls, and a reliable vehicle that held it's value for years to come, due to the Jeep name pedigree. Boy was I wrong. My problems started the evening I brought it home. I noticed the next morning after purchase that there was a puddle of clear liquid under the front of the car. I thought it was residual dripping from being washed the day before, but the dripping hadn't stopped after 24 hours. A quick smell of the liquid revealed it was alcohol based and not water. I discovered that the washer fluid pump was leaking. After a quick and unsatisfying call to the dealership, where they wanted me to make an appointing for 2 weeks out, I removed the pump myself and sealed with black RTV silicone to solve for the problem. Flash forward a few months an a couple thousand miles, and I started getting an awful screeching sound when starting the vehicle from cold. It would intermittently happen at first, but became increasingly more frequent over the next month, and eventually screeched constantly. My first trip to the dealership yielded the response of "we cannot recreate the sound, therefore cannot resolve for it". Funny that the next morning after returning home, it made the same terrible sound. A second trip to the dealership, and request of a different technician, revealed that the serpentine belt was cracked. It was replaced an the screeching went away. During this visit, they also serviced the front brakes, which made a terrible squeal under moderate to light braking once they had warmed up. Very annoying and embarrassing. I haven't event gotten to the worst part about the Jeep Renegade in my opining, which is really a two-part issue. First is the terribly small fuel tank. At only 12.7 gallons, I had to fill up twice as often as a companion vehicle during a trip from Florida to Tennessee. Really made for a slow trip needing to stop every 300 miles. The range of the vehicle left a lot to be desired. Second, and what I feel is the absolute biggest issue with the Renegade (in Trailhawk trim at least), is the drivetrain combination of the 2.4L, 4 cyl. engine and the 9 speed transmission. Accelerating at speed, passing on the highway, and overall highway drivability is the worst that I've ever experienced. You literally have to floor the accelerator to achieve any passing capability, and passing vehicles on a 2 lane, dotted line road is beyond terrifying. I can't begin to describe how terrible this motor and transmission combination is. The computer constantly tries to put the car in the highest gear possible to save on fuel, which causes CONSTANT downshifts. I can't imagine the durability or longevity of the transmission internals due to the accelerated levels of wear and tear that this causes. I could spend hours nitpicking this vehicle, but I'll spare the readers and my fingers. All told, I'm beyond thrilled that I was able to trade out of this vehicle. Unfortunately, the Renegade dropped 1/3 of it's value (as mentioned in other reviews) in less than 10 months. Be weary/cautious of this, as it does not carry the Jeep pedigree/name into it's resale value. Buyer beware and best of luck with your decision!

Before I purchased I did some research, at that time the only complaints were regarding the Automatic Transmission. I decided to get the 6 manual. I have over 12, 00 miles and no problems at all. I accept this vehicle for what it is, a $23,000.00 SUV. It did very well in the Michigan snow this year, is smooth on the highway and I have nothing negative to report at this time.

I have only had my Renegade for a few days. I have noticed no major issues. Cabin is extremely quiet. The dash display is quite helpful in terms of fuel economy, tire pressure, etc. Fuel economy for me has been good so far. The sound system is a little lackluster as I have the base Lattitude model, would have liked something with a little more thump. Seats are comfy. The ride is surprisingly smooth (it is a Jeep!). I have noticed a lot of complaints about transmission, which I am hoping to avoid with the manual trans. Speaking of, the shifting is very smooth, but the acceleration to me is a little sluggish. But it's not a sports car, it is a Jeep. I have owned several Wranglers in the past and have had no major issues with any of them. I would've purchased another Wrangler, but the prices are a little too steep for me at this time. But, I am a Jeep fan and I have been looking forward to the Renegade since it was announced. I got a great deal on my little Jinx (nickname) so I really can't complain too much. Update: Three years in and I'm still loving my Renegade. Gets good gas mileage, handles well, no major issues so far, though I did have one minor issue with the battery needing a jump. I'm up around 50,000 miles and have taken quite a few long trips with it and it has been great. I would definitely buy another Renegade.

I bought a 2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 01/01/2016 and it has already been in the shop for issues. The first issue I have had is using a DriveSense device to save money on car insurance allegedly cause the computer to malfunction. I had 304 miles and in the first month of ownership it was in the shop more than it was able to be driven. Multiple cars to Chrylser complaint line and threats of wanting the car replaced caused Chrylser/Fiat to reimburse for the first month payment as it was only drivable for about 1 week out of the entire month. Removed the computer reading device no issues. It would be thought that this information would be shared from Jeep(Chrylser/Fiat) with Esurance to advise that the DriveSense is not compatible with the computer within this vehicle. Fast forward a month or 2, I had an issue with the shifting from Park to Reverse/Drive--it felt like I was driving an old manual car doing the "bunny hop" when driving--I thought it was due to not being "broken in." After going down the interstate attempting to merge with traffic, the RPMs increased and the MPH decreased--felt like it was going to stall out. Also this happened when making corners, the car felt like it was going to stall out completely. Trip into the dealer revealed that there was a pump that needed to be replaced. Come to find out the Transmission pump and valves needed to be replaced. Thankfully this was a warranty repair. Fear of this happening when there is no longer a warranty and the repairs are going to be extremely costly. Wishing I would have done more research on this vehicle and read more reviews. First Jeep purchase and more than likely the last one.

I had a very minor fender bender within the first 3 weeks I owned my Renegade. No airbag deployment and traveling at a low rate of speed. The anti lock brakes caused the vehicle to slide as if were hydroplaning. I have been without this vehicle now for 5 months as the vehicle was so new and made in Italy. I mean NO PARTS!!!!!! Now that it is almost repaired I have learned the vehicle has to go to a dealership due to new technology in the radiator making it impossible to check the levels on your own. Also, there is a new European freon for the A/C which only a few dealerships have. This has been a nightmare and I have still been paying for a car that I have been unable to use. Jeep needs to be aware of this and make it right. I hope this doesn't happen to any other Renegade owners. Good luck if it does.

My 2015 Renegade has just over 6000 miles on it. This past week my key fob and the driver's door electronics stopped working. I can't use the key fob or the lock buttons on the doors. They all have to be locked/unlocked manually. When I called the dealership they told me it would be 3 weeks before they could see me. Today I went to turn on the car and... nothing. It clicks, the dashboard lights up (and gives me about a thousand error messages), the radio turns on but no start. Then they key won't come out of the ignition. The key won't even turn to the 'off' position. It's stuck somewhere between the 'off' and 'just the battery' positions. So, my car won't start, won't lock, keys are stuck in the ignition, AND the dealership is trying to give me the run around. Considering I've only had this car 7 months and I've already had more problems with it than I did my 7 year old Ford Fusion, as soon as I can dump this lemon I'm done with Jeep (and Chrysler).

I traded in my 2013 Nissan altima for the Renegade. I wanted something with 4x4 capability but I also wanted good gas mileage. Keep gave me over what my Altima was worth and really made a great deal for me. And I love the renegade! We recently had a small tornado where I currently live and I drove into the storm on my way home from work. Strong winds and very heavy rain - I didn't feel the vehicle sway or deter at all on the road. It was almost like I was driving on a sunny day. It is a fun car, visibility is great and overall not expensive! My car insurance payment decreased with my Renegade $22 a month! Not a lot but that adds up! If your looking for a small SUVA try it out!

Engine died on busy freeway with 4k miles. Car has been at dealership for repair for over 40 days, and still no diagnosis of the problem. One big headache! Price and features seemed great, but now I know it was too good to be true. I liked certain design aspects of the car, but reliability is horrendous, and I see now that I'm not alone in my frustration and disappointment.

We already have a '11 Jeep Liberty so I am evaluating this Jeep with that in mind. The first thing we noticed is that we FIT in the car! The outside definitely makes you think that a 6'0" person would have their head at the ceiling - not so! Jeep really made this vehicle appeal to all demographics including those blessed with height. The power on button takes some getting used to (remember that you have to press it again with the brake in to start the car if you use the remote start! great security feature but I definitely was lost for a minute when I first used it). The turn radius is FANTASTIC for a Jeep. Or a car really! The feel is that of a car - you don't realize you are going as fast as you are until you look at the dash. That could be the reason my husband set up a warning when I hit 80mph...oops. I love being able to customize the dash with what I want to see. The gauges are switched from the usual (MPH on the right and RPM on the left rather than the reverse) so that does take some getting used to. Also, being taller, the dash is not the most visible line of sight when your hands are on the steering wheel. Therefore, we have the MPH showing as the main portion of the customized dash. Love love love the Bluetooth feature. We did not get the navigation option in the car so we just sync our phones and the speakers (loud and full sound!) let you know what is coming up. I also use the crap out of the backup camera because I am the worst person with backing up. My husband is fantastic at driving and backs into our driveway every time he comes home so he only uses it to see how close he can get to our other Jeep...ugh. The only downfall of this would be the rear seating - it's cramped for an adult person especially with the cup holder seat down. Think airplane seats. But, when we have kids, it will be perfect for them. I'm a happy camper with this one!

At 125 miles, car started jerking and sputtering. Took back to dealer who did software update for transmission. One week later, loud squealing brakes. Dealer said they're fine, common with a new car. Four months later, while re-fueling, the entire capless tank housing came out with the gas nozzle at the pump! Dealer replaced part. Brakes still squaling loudly with no fix!!! Really regretful. A month after that, fuel filler door fell off. Pillar was defective and had to be replaced. Sun visor snapped off. Now, another recall issued. Brakes squeak embarrasingly loud with no fix.

I had own my first Renegade trailhawk for almost 7 months and loved her! The renegade was amazing in snowdrifts and bad snowy roads I always felt like I had control. She was totaled one morning a few weeks ago when a young lady turn left crossing two lanes into mine. I was not able to stop in time Tboning the other car around 40/45 miles a hour. My insurance agency said he has not seen one in a accident yet however this jeep got 5 stars in his eyes. My 9 year old nephew who was in the back seat and myself walked away. I did have a bruised knee from the lower leg airbag but we walked away the jeep did its job and kept us safe. I did have a few problems with her the locks would not lock or unlock however this was a quick fix and the dealership. I now am having issues with my new jeep same as the first one. This may be a once in a lifetime problem however the cap to the battery cables came off getting caught in the fan burning the fan motor. this is being replaced as we speak. Also I have notice when I back up the brakes squeak they are also looking into this on my new jeep I have had less than two weeks. My dealership has been amazing and have quickly fixed any problems I have come across which is not many. Needless to say I loved my Renegade trailhawk so much that when I had a clean start to get any other car I choose to have another renegade. She kept me safe and was fun to play with in the snow.

New model, new problems, just purchased rain guards for windows, hopefully this will stop water coming in, door locks quit working at 2800 miles, computer module needed reset, front brakes need replaced with bolts to be added, always had Wranglers and never had issues, question if this was a smart purchase but dealership (Scheidemantle Motors) have been great. Keeping fingers crossed.

We purchased the Renegade approximately 4 months ago. The vehicle had 2400 miles on it when the service passive entrance system warning memo came on. I contacted the dealership to inquire why the light would come on so early in the life to the jeep. We set up an appointment to have the system checked. We were told that there was an update on the system so the techs ran the update. Upon the completion of the update we were told that there were a few more updates an were asked if we could leave the vehicle for at least 4 more hours. We agreed. In approximately 4 hours the dealer contacted us to say the vehicle was ready. Upon arriving home the service passive entrance system warning memo came on. We contacted the dealer who wanted the vehicle the next day. Again we had the system checked and were told that Chrysler reps told the dealership to replace a dash module. We left and once again with minutes the warning memo came on. Approximately 4 days later we returned the vehicle to the dealer for the passive entrance system repair. The vehicle was tied up for most of the day for the repair. The next day my wife was preparing to leave for a doctors appointment. She got into the vehicle and a warning memo appeared on the dash that the fob was not recognized. Fortunately I left my fob which happened to work. I contacted the dealership and was told to bring the vehicle back in to be checked. We took the vehicle in and I suggested that they take both fobs an reprogram the system. We sat in the dealership for over 2 hours when the service writer informed us that the internet connection to Chrysler was down and that we needed to bring the vehicle back. On the following Monday we made another appointment for the fob reprogram. On Thursday of that week, 4 days later, the fob that I use would not allow me to unlock the doors. My fob was not recognized by the system. On this past Friday I took the vehicle in for the 5th time for the same issue. It is now Monday and the dealer still has our vehicle. I feel that the lemon law should be considered for this vehicle. The dealer is adamant about not considering the lemon law as they claim they have fixed it. During the course of our arguments about it being a lemon I was made an offer on the vehicle to have the dealer trade us out of it. I stunned to discover that the Renegade with 3000 miles on it an being in our possession for four months has lost 1/3 of its value. The dealers comments regarding the vehicle is for us to just keep bringing its back so they can swap out parts until it is repaired. We are still unsure of the vehicle. About a month ago I went to start the Renegade. I put my foot on the brake pedal, pushed the starter button and the dash changed from English to Metric. I went through the book and did not find any hints as to how to reverse the switch. I went through the menu and hit reset on the dash board display nothing. I do not trust the dealership so I lived with it until about a month later I once again went to start the vehicle. I placed my foot on the brake pedal and the emergency brake automatically set. I started the vehicle and was able to release the brake. Every time we pushed the start stop button the brake would automatically set. My wife took the vehicle to the dealership to get it washed and said something to the service writer who jumped on it immediately and spent about an hour correcting the issue. Just waiting for the next episode. We still have no faith in the vehicle. On September 1, 2016 we pulled into the garage. As always I checked the instrument panel to make sure everything was normal. All Okay. September 2, 2016 I got into the vehicle to start it, put my foot on the brake pedal, hit the starter button and the vehicle switched back to metric again. We have not had the time to spend in the dealership so we have not had the vehicle switched back to English yet. During this time though our Renegade decided to automatically set the emergency brake again for one day. Some how this annoyance stopped on its own after that one day. Our feelings have not changed about this vehicle as of yet. We have since switched dealerships. The new dealership has so far cured all of our issues. The service writer took about 5 minutes to show us how to switch the computer from metric back to English. The new dealership spent about 3 hour going over the entire vehicle, physically and with the computer and discovered many issues which they repaired. Since that visit we have had no issues. It is all in the dealership.

I have had my Renegade for about 5 weeks and have absolutely nothing bad to say about it. It is fun to drive and looks awesome. I waited 4 months for them to come out and bought mine the day it arrived at the dealer. NO REGRETS! Still no regrets! Great car for short trips or long trips! Still in love! Only minor issue - when using cruise control on highway the speed will drop 2-4 mph going uphill. My employer provides me with a 2016 Ford Escape which does not hold a candle to the Renegade. Ford makes a pathetic attempt to add bells and whistle with either do not work or work when they want to. Who's brilliant idea was it to let the car (and ONLY the car) decide when it should be in 4 WD. All bells and whistles on the Renegade work & work well!

Please, please, If anybody is interesting in this car, PLEASE stop, look for a better alternative, seriously, I purchased a Jeep Renegade Limited 2015 brand new, last Feb. 14, 2016 on presidents day weekend, today, 10 days after and with 650 miles, the car suddenly stop and the engine shuts down in the middle of the highway attempting to my own safety and other drivers safety due to a huge transmission oil leakage. In a brand new car this is totally not acceptable.

When this model came out there was no doubt in my mind I wanted it. so I purchased it 6 months ago. Since then the keys wouldn't unlock the car. Had to manually unlock and lock doors. Dealership finally fixed that. Time to time it does it again.. Now the transmission jerks and literally gives you whiplash when you come to a complete stop and go again.. Took it to the dealership for the 3rd time the guy working on it says the transmission needed to be flashed.. What a joke this car needs flashing constantly ,I waste hours at dealership.. This morning I go out to leave the transmission light is on. Very disappointed. Do your research. The cars have BIG PROBLEMS. I was better off buying a used car than brand new.. Terrible experiences. I continue to have problems the transmission still jerks when I take off time to time. I have since now encountered a new problem something on the driver floor board is rubbing when I turn the steering wheel.

Comfort is what would be expected in a small Jeep. Ride is good. Mileage is great. Storage is almost non existent. Despite other reviews, acceleration, transmission, engine performance is acceptable. Good vehicle for everyday local and highway travel. This little Jeep actually feels "solid" as compared to the soft loose feel of so many other vehicles. Would buy this Jeep again without hesitation. But mobility issues required room for a motorized scooter. Hated to give up the TH but got a Town & Country. PREVIOUS COMMENTS STILL APPLY BUT WE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE JEEP WITH A TOWN & COUNTRY TO ACCOMMODATE A MOBILITY SCOOTER.

Bought this little gem in June, best Jeep for visibility! Cargo area is smaller, but ok for my shopping needs. Easiest Jeep to drive for a baby boomer. Excellent going up steep hills and in driving rain.

55k miles and still going strong. Snow tires on again and having fun in the mountain snow in the Eastern Slopes of the Cascades. Jeeps go where others can't. Model is 2.4L not 1.4L as indicated. Unable to change it.

Good little jeep with lots of little extras. So far it has been impressive, lots of people down the car because of the transmission. Truth be told it's just different than most others out there. I have owned around 100 cars all make and this one shifts totally different. If you don't have an open mind to a different vehicle how it shifts and operates then don't buy this one. If you do you will be one of the people whom don't like this jeep. I have been happy with my jeep and it runs like a champ. I like the crawl control and the optional terrain modes. For the price it is hard to beat!

I have owned my Renegade since August 2015 and still love it! It's cute, has a little zip when you need it and is good on gas. My husband is 6ft and he has plenty of room in the front, and he has had to sit in the back once or twice and was fine. I have two boys 9 and 5 and they are plenty comfortable in the back. The overall look of it is what caught my eye and I love that it's a little rugged and cute at the same time. The only downside that I could say is it not coming with a spare tire kit. I had a flat a few months ago and was shocked that there was no spare, jack, wrench or anything! I had to have it towed from my driveway to a local tire shop. The woman there was surprised it didn't come with anything and told me if I would have tried to use the kit that blows it back up it would have messed up the tire pressure sensor and that would have cost $100 or so to fix. I hear that a lot of new cars are not coming equipped with spares anyways. I have not had any problems that everyone else seems to be having. No key fab problems, no transmission problems etc. I have noticed when I reverse out of my driveway in the morning and brake it squeaks once and that's it. Nothing else throughout the day. I have about 6300 miles on it now and overall am very happy with it!!! *Update 8/31/17* I still enjoy my Renegade. I have started running into key getting stuck. All you have to do is turn car back on, put foot on brake, reverse (or move forward) just a bit, put it in park, wait a few seconds and then take foot of brake pedal. Turn car off and key should come out. At least that is what has worked for us in the past. I am at about 31,000 miles and have noticed some rough shifting. Also I live in Northern GA and going up and down the hills/mountains sometimes it doesn't know what to do and will rev like crazy and I will have to put it over to manual.

I shouldn't read other peoples reviews....they frighten and confuse me! Ok...Driving it 150miles a day has been great. Smooth ride, Great Mileage...32.5 average daily. The worst part is the drivers seat. I'm 5'6" and the bottom of the drivers seat rubs under my knees. Never had that problem before. Had to buy a back cushion to nudge me forward a bit. Other than that, the power is good if you rev it up and don't shift too fast. If you're driving fairly calmly, then it's fine as well, just not a quick starter off the line. The turbo takes a bit to kick in, but lets be honest, I bought this for the extra room in the back over a sedan, and the decent mpg. The Bluetooth for the phone audio is HORRID! No one can hear me when I speak through the car's system, so I have to still use the speaker phone or a headset. When listening to music and Audiobooks, the bluetooth works well, and I like that it reads me a text message through the system as well. I think the 6 speed manual is the smoothest shifting transmission I've ever had. It's like butter in every gear. I read some ladies review and she ripped the shifting on the 6 speed. I can't imagine what the heck she is doing to have those problems. I drove 3 different Renegade's and they all shifted great! I like the Auto Parking Break feature. I think it should be on by default. I found it by accident a few weeks after buying the car. Much safer than finding myself squished by the car while getting my mail! (udate: sometimes the auto parking break resets itself to off---Dangerous) Visibility is good. You can't see out of the rear little windows, but the car still has excellent visibility. The price was $17020 + Tax $20,000 with everything and a full reimbursment accident policy. I normally don't get anything like that, but it wasn't expensive and will get me new car someday if the worst happens. Great experience with the car a few months in and 17000mi.

It is a Jeep, not a Corvette, not a truck , and not a mini van. I am 6'5" tall and I am very comfortable in the front seat and the back seat. It holds all the cargo my wife and I need to haul and is very reliable. The only complaint I have is I miss my cd player, but I solved that by getting a portable cd player and hooking it up to my radio and 12 volt power supply. This Jeep puts a smile on my face!
