I bought this in May 2021 with 138000 miles on it. The front tires were bald but the rears were new. The interior was perfect and it's a 4x4 because in Utah, I need that. I have read multiple reviews before buying the vehicle reading about the rotten MPG and other things. I have not had any of these issues so far. I have the Fuelly app on my phone and have been tracking my mpg. Most of my driving happens in town with some drives on the highway maybe twice a month or so. For the first 3,000 miles, I am averaging 16.6 miles to the gallon with a high of 19.5 and a low of 14. I can't complain. I mean this is a purpose-built 4x4. The ride is choppy, the seating position is high, the ground clearance is nearly 10 inches. I'd say 16.6 MPG is great. I did have to replace/repair some things. A sensor inside the transmission failed and caused a leak. So I replaced that sensor, had the computer reprogrammed at Aamco for $280. I replaced the tires for $700, and then caught up with the scheduled maintenance - fluids, oil change, etc. I also had to pay to fix the rear passenger power window. It still doesn't work well so I don't roll it down. This is a really fun car to drive. I took it up into the mountains to do some fishing, twisty roads, trails, you name it and it was great. I love this little Jeep so much. I plan on keeping it until it just falls apart completely then I'll buy a Grand Cherokee or something.

Plusses include comfort, tight turning radius, towing up to 5,000 pounds, fully loaded options. Minuses include poor gas mileage, trailer sway difficult at 50+ mph

JEEP/Liberty/2002- disappointing

This is my 3rd Jeep- bought all of them new. The Liberty is a 2002 and only has 54,000 miles. So far, had 3 batterys- two sets of tires, Air conditioning needed to be replaced, Exhaust System and Muffler needed to be replaced at 50K miles and NOW the Catalytic Converter needs to be replaced! NEVER drove off-road- looking at the miles, the truck is not driven that much at all-Well maintained, oil changes every 3000 miles. Do not understand the poor quality. Having owned Jeeps in the past I have something to compare this one with. Would like something to be done about this... Very disappointed with the rust under the Garage kept, barely driven SUV.

My Liberty is a very handsome vehicle, but they can be handsome all day long and it won't help you much if they are in the shop with something wrong, like tail lights that fill up with water, differential seal leaks, ball joint problems, A/C problems, windows that fail to go up and down all at the tender age of 4. And gas mileage that really stinks. Come on Jeep, you can do better than this.

Mechanical issues from start. Stalled, would not start, transmission slippage, major tire problems with Goodyear tires, very noisy. Dealership consistently denied problems. I now see that my problems are a common occurrence with this vehicle. Finally was able to get a dealership mechanic to admit to me that the 02 year of this vehicle has many issues as it was the first year made. At least that was validation of my problem but does not resolve my problems. By the way, dealership still refuses to acknowledge what mechanic confirmed.
