The Best SUV Ever

The original SUV was, and is the best. It's reasonably economical, quick and agile, and combines the ruggedness of a true truck frame with agility (the agility is helped by the aftermarket, stiffer shocks I installed along with slightly wider high-performance tires). And it can go pretty much anywhere. My 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4.0 has more than 180,000 miles on it - yet when I change the oil after 4000 miles, the dipstick still shows full! I've never had an engine with this level of longevity. With its NP242 Selec-Trac transfer case, in addition to 2WD and 4WD Hi & Lo it also has Full Time All-Wheel Drive - in this mode on wet pavement it's like having an Audi Quattro or BMW X-Drive.

A Great Car

If you want a plush, smooth riding SUV, don't get a Cherokee. This is my 2nd Cherokee. They have been reliable, feel solid, (feels larger then it actually is) - well, compared to the newer and very big truck-like SUVs. Gas mileage: 17-19 in the suburbs,18-21 hwy. at about 65 too 70 mph. Feels smooth, and comfortable driving on good roads - you will feel bumps on poor roads - but considering I've ruined tires and shocks with previous cars on pot-holes, etc... I don't have to worry about that anymore. Ac/heat work great, with floor ducts to the back seat. ...and it's the classic Jeep look and feel that I want

This is my 3rd one. I had a 1988 Comanche 4x4 then a 1996 Cherokee. Now a 2000 classic. I love them. They're very reliable and fun to drive.

This car is extreamly reliable. I turned over 128,000 miles with minimal troubles. Nothing costly has gone wrong with it, still on origional engine and tranny. Leaks less than 1/2 a quart of oil a month in its older age, started around 115,000 miles but nothing too costly.

My Cherokee the money pit

To begin with, when I bought my Jeep it was the dream 4wd vehicle that I wanted. But, since I left the lot I have had numerous problems with my Jeep. I bought my truck with 3 miles and at 5 miles my back rotor was falling off! Dealer replaced for some reason rather than putting the original correctly back on. Since then, I have gone to the dealer about 4 times about my antifreeze depleting every 100 miles I have to refill. Now I am having serious trouble with my oil pressure. 3 visits to the dealership has cost me about $1200 and still I do not have any oil pressure when a stop. Now I am trying to see if my situation was possibly a lemon.
