CRV Redux

Owned a CRV way back in '99, generally liked it, but boy was it uncomfortable for the long haul. All these years later I felt I needed another SUV and I'm back in one and I chose it over many competitors both in and out of its class - nothing seemed to compare for overall comfort, fit, finish, value and just plain old attention to detail. Have owned the car since March and though it doesn't show a lot of miles on the clock we have made a trip to the Outer Banks of NC, a trip to Charleston, SC and a trip to northeast TN from our home in northern VA so you can see it's mostly highway miles. Through the mountains it gobbles up hills like they weren't there and the CVT transmission is not droney as you would think especially as compared to the Fusion hybrid I traded. I have left it in "Econ" mode for most of the time that I've had it. Only when I have loaded it up with people have I switched out of Econ, and that is just to give it a little more ummph off the line - and yes the boost in performance it is quite noticeable. It does tend to be tepid off the line when in Econ. The seats are great, front and back what else can I say. I am 5'11" and 245 with a bad back and knees and I haven't howled one time about lack of comfort when I am driving. Neither has my wife in the passenger seat and she loves the fact that the front seat backs are also heated by the seat warmers. The car is very easy to get into and out of and the doors both front and rear swing wide to accommodate entry and exit. The cargo area is cavernous and the main reason we traded cars. Came out of a Fusion hybrid and the loss of trunk space was more than we could deal with. Yes we took a hit on fuel economy, but not that much and the gain in cargo and overall cabin room is well worth the trade off in economy. The only downside if there is one is that the Infotainment system is fiddly and requires your attention a little too much for my taste. A car is transportation first and "Star Trek" second. Although voice recognition works fine you have to be on your A game to remember the commands properly and this is no different I don't care what brand you drive. As far as my ratings go I have left some areas as OK/NA because I haven't truly been able to honestly comment on it, so it may go up or down. We are preparing for a 6000 mile road trip at the end of August to tour our western states. I will be sure to update at the end of the trip to see if the honeymoon still holds up. Cheers. Update Sep 29, 2018 I promised a follow up after a long road trip we had planned in late August. Here's the nuts and bolts. 7000 miles in 23 days. We started in central Virginia, winding our way across this great nation stopping for a 3 day visit in Omaha, Neb then on to Moab, UT for a visit to Arches and Canyonlands NP. Left there for Cortez, CO and a visit to Mesa Verde NP. From there to Four Corners, then Grand Canyon and onward to Sedona, AZ. After a 3 days visit there headed to Bryce Canyon NP and on northward to Grand Teton NP and Yellowstone. Onward to Mt Rushmore and Deadwood, SD then the long trek back to Virginia. I detail all these places so you can envision the terrain we drove through and know that we drove over some serious mountain ranges requiring good acceleration and great braking as well as good road holding ability. Trust me until you have experienced the switchbacks in Canyonlands and Mesa Verde you won't know what the aforementioned attributes mean. What can I say, the CRV performed flawlessly and exceeded my every expectation. Yes I left it in ECON the whole trip and it never hiccupped once not even over Loveland Pass at over 10000 ft elevation. The only reason anything passed me was because they chose to run faster than I was willing. Would the Honda keep up at 80mph most certainly and more, but 80 is my limit on public roadways and really a bit too much for my taste. The secondary roads that we were forced to use in a lot of instances were not always in the best of shape, but the CRV has not developed one squeak or rattle, nor has the paint suffered from chips and dings - there are some killer suicidal grasshoppers out there as well as blowing dust. I said in my first review that I am 66, 5'11" and 245, bad back and knees and my wife also suffers from back problems. Not a whimper from either of us. The seats are great, period. The interior room is phenominal. We tend to brake for thrift and antique stores and there came a time that I wish the car would fill up so we could drive on! It just seemed to be growing more space! Enough said, but the fuel economy in mountainous terrain, over much secondary road, crawling through the National Parks and cruising at 80mph on the interstate through Montana and South Dakota I have an indicated average of 32.7 mpg. The car now has a tick over 10k miles and its first service under its belt. I just can't heap enough praise on this car. I think they got this one right.

GAS in Oil - WOULD NOT RECOMMEND -

Update after 2 years: Dealer updated software to fix the gas in oil. I noticed gas in the oil and returned to dealer to report the condition. The dealer refused to document the condition saying this is what Honda recommends which means they don't truly have a fix. Love the vehicle but wouldn't recommend the engine. I have had 2 hondas that have lasted over 200K. The 2018 CRV is a ghost waiting to turn into a nightmare. The gas in the oil is real and regardless of Honda claiming is normal that is false. No engine can handle oil dilution without having a premature bearing surface wear problem and oil seal problems in the future. The engine life will be reduced that is a fact. No one can say by how much since the engines don't have enough mileage yet. The other downside is the oil with added gas requires the oil to be changed more frequently. I have smelled gas in the oil with 50 miles on a fresh oil change and with a little over a 1000 miles the oil level is so high it makes you want to change it. I'm afraid the earthdreams engine design will require a major redesign. Look on utube and do some searching you will find everyone is complaining. it is not an isolated event to the cold northern states. It is happening in hot Tx, Mo, Ar, Fla., Tn.... I wish I didn't buy this vehicle. Honda has no fix for the problem.

We like our CR-V

A quality vehicle. We like the steering (precise), road-ability (stable - goes were you point it and stays there), the engine (peppy and quiet), the large storage area and the "fold flat" second row. I could actually sleep in it, and I'm 5' 10". It is tight and solid, without squeaks and rattles. Nice fit and finish. Our gas mileage has been great: 25 around town and on a pokey 200 mile "break in trip" at 50 - 65 mph we actually got 34. The negatives: the front driver's seat bottom is pretty hard, and short, so the "under thigh" support is lacking, a comfort negative on a long trip. The center console is so wide it makes buckling front seat belts very tight, especially with thick winter clothing. All in all, we're quite happy with our purchase. With only 550 miles on it, the reliability remains to be seen. We also like the CVT transmission, but the reliability of the design also remains to be seen. UPDATE August, 2018: We now have 4200 miles on it. After owning it a few months we began to notice a slight, rapid vibration at 65 mph. It sort of "phased in and out" at about a 5-7 second interval. Rebalancing tires and tire rotation changed nothing. The dealership, because the vibration was so slight, pronounced it "normal" and refuses to pursue it further. My wife scarcely notices it, but it's in there and it irritates me. No factory service bulletins reflect this problem, and no similar complaints are found online. Service manager's "it's all yours attitude" has caused me to take my routine service elsewhere. UPDATE: February 2019. 6,800 miles. The 65 mile per hour vibration I mentioned seems to have mostly gone away. We continue to enjoy the wonderful "goes where you point it - hands off" stability. And it's till tight and solid, fun to drive.

We have had a Subaru Outback for 20 years, and have loved it. It has been the most useful and reliable car we have ever owned (and both my wife and I are north of age 65, so we have owned a goodly number of cars). We researched a new car purchase for over a year, and pretty much assumed we would get another Subaru (most likely a Forester, for its compact size and off-road agility). We have also owned a 2000 Jeep Wrangler since it was almost new, and have done a lot of 4-wheeling. We live in the lower part of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and get a modest amount of snow along with the rain. So, we value good traction in a rural area. But, when we finally test-drove a Forester, we found the ride was a bit stiffer than we liked, the seats were too firm, and entry/exit was a little difficult for my 5'3" wife. Then, we drove the Honda CR-V. We felt it was noticeably more comfortable. Also, it has a plusher interior, and slightly larger cargo volume. We thought it was generally classier looking. (We recognized that the Forester has a half-inch more ground clearance, and possibly slightly better safety technology, notably the rear braking feature.) We really like the Honda's little engine, which has absolutely no turbo lag, and is much more responsive than the old Outback ever was. The technology is excellent, the safety features are most comforting, the Molten Lava Pearl Red paint is very good fun; Folsom Lake Honda is excellent to work with for both purchase and service. We are gratified to learn that Kelley Blue Book and Motor Trend magazine have given the CR-V "best of class" recognition. We have kept the Subaru, but we have a new love.

Great car overall, except for gas in oil

A lot of good things to say about the 2018 CR-V. I have the EX-L model, a great set of safety features, a good amount of room, pretty good stereo. But... Infotainment center is poorly designed, Honda focused too much on getting rid of physical knobs, so nearly everything requires several clicks on the touchscreen, including controlling where you cabin air goes. REALLY? Hopefully, in the 2019, they will greatly simplify the operation, so it is less of a safety hazard operating the climate control or sound system. But the really big problem is OIL IN THE GAS. There are several symptoms that go with this: heater very slow to warm up in winter; rising engine oil levels; smell of gasoline on the dipstick, and sometimes in the passenger cabin. Honda has recalled over 100,000 CR-Vs in China for this problem, but is downplaying it in US and Canada. Getting a turbo that runs on regular fuel seemed like a real bonus. Except it doesn't run WELL on regular fuel. In fact, this may be a major contributor to fuel in the oil. I've found running premium fuel provides much better engine performance, and possibly a decrease in the oil contamination problem. If you plan to buy, REQUIRE the dealer to throw in a 100,000 mile, 8 year warranty to cover engine and electronics. Let them know you are aware of the engine problem, and if THEY have faith in the car they build, they will stand behind it with a longer warranty.

I haven't had any problems with this car. I think it's great. I don't have the fuel in oil problem that some are having. Apparently it's been a problem with a few CRVs from 2017 2018 EX models . I don't know how common the problem is. I decided to base my review on my experiences and not what I read about others. The ride is comfortable. The turbo has plenty of power for me. I enjoy the blind spot warning, brake warning, automatic rear view mirror(never had this before), and other features. The entertainment system took me a while to figure out, but it works fine with quality sound. I had a problem with the entertainment screen. It would freeze and require a reboot. Set screen sensitivity to min and started cleaning the screen once a week. No problems since doing this for the past year. Now have 23500 miles. I highly recommend this car. Now have 28000 miles. I still highly recommend this car. Now at 31000 miles.. No problems. Still highly recommend Now at 36500 miles. Still no problems. Highly recommend. Was at 44000 miles when I traded it for a 2022. No problems. The trade in value was so great I couldn't pass it up.

The driving performance on the 2018 is passable for what it is. Don't let the turbo charger fool you- it is there to help gas mileage (which is ok); the CRV has all the acceleration you would expect from a low end economy 4 cylinder; i.e., not much. What is really poor though, and was poorly represented by the dealer is the "infotainment". The navigation is terrible (eg, searching for locations doesn't really work), the interface is clunky, and the syncing with phones is shaky at best. Its a shame that they don't offer the EX-L with a much more basic (and user-friendly) sound option. For the price, in retrospect I wish we had gone with a Subaru or Toyota.

Foggy Windows and No New Car Smell

Sue, 01/01/2019

We have had our Honda CR-V for approximately 6 months. It was hot when we got the car, and I immediately noticed our windshield would fog up while driving. I naturally had the AC on, but I had to keep it set on the front vent to avoid continued foggy windows. Now that we are in winter, I find that the windows continue to fog on the inside, particularly when several people are in the car. Recently, 4 adults rode in the car and the windows fogged to the point where we could not see. I was afraid we were going to have to use an ice scraper on the inside of the windows! It was very embarrassing to have our friends see this problem with our car. They kept saying they felt sorry for us. UGH! I also noticed early on that my car no longer had a new car smell. I have had new cars before, and this was a red flag for me. Perhaps it is due to the ventilation/AC issue - I hope so. My husband experienced the diluted oil issue when he changed the oil the first time. He was surprised at how the oil "shot out" when he opened the plug. We had not seen posts on the diluted oil issue, so he figured it was related to first-time maintenance. We had a Honda Accord, which we loved, so I did not do any research when I purchased the CR-V. I trusted the company, which I now know was a mistake. Our vehicle was made in Canada. We have already received a product recall for a software update with A/C Control Unit Replacement. Hopefully, that will correct the window fogging issues. I am concerned about the bigger oil dilution problem, and I hope Honda admits to the issue and issues a fix.

As a long time Honda owner ( have had nothing but Honda since 1984, many models) we were looking forward to enjoying this car for many adventures back and forth to Florida and other places. We have put 25K on it in the first year and 90% of the time has been wonderful. Our GPS has on many occasions just died and went blank, the heat/AC controls have quit and have heard loud popping sounds under the dash as it goes blank. Its been taken to 2 dealers and left for many days at both and nobody can duplicate the issue. The fix is easy, shut the car off and wait a minute and turn it back on but not convenient at all driving down the highway at speed. And now I hear they are investigating a blown turbo and gas leaking into the oil, with no fix and Honda claims to know nothing about it.

Gas in my engine oil

Bought a new car but was not expecting these issues with this car. I understand people do not typically respond to these forums unless there is a issue that was not satisfactorily resolved. Here is mine. At 4500 miles, started looking into first oil change, I change my oil every 5000 so I look at the color of the oil and its was black with consistency of water, and about 1 -1.5 qt above the full mark. Take into dealer and they claim, "Overfilled at factory, no problem here." I told them about the gas smell, they told me no gas here, was told " if there was a problem, Honda would of told us." Investigated on line, found oil-dilution problem on Earth Dreams engine. China and JAPAN stopped shipment, Canada required Honda to do something major, not sure what. Crickets from Honda USA. Gasoline is getting into oil possibly through the piston rings from the injectors. I'm sure my oil has lost its viscosity once diluted. Engine bearing love gasoline lubrication (sarcasm here). Honda initially tried to get away with blaming it on drivers, too many short trips, no warm-ups etc... Other problems are, engine temp gauge is very erratic. Up and down. Inside cabin will not get warm even when driving a long time. Electric steering slams up again against the rack when reaching the end of turn. Acceleration sucks. Sorry Honda, you have known about this oil-dilution issue back in early 2017 and still no fix? I'll be hard pressed to buy another Honda after this. Last Honda I had had a serious issue with they also claimed ignorance. I thought it was a one-time only issue. Clearly it was a critical component failure issue. I'm not a lawsuit kinda person but sometimes that is the only way you can get their attention.

Loved the car but unfortunately after researching it Honda has a Oil Dilution problem on 1.5L Turbo charged engines. No permanent fix available yet. Dealers tell me no such problems exist and have never heard of the issue. Very dishonest salesmen at the Honda dealerships in my area. Will buy a Toyota instead.

Mixed feelings about 2018 CRV LX!!!

After reading all the negative reviews and Honda knowing about the serious Turbo issues and not having a fix as of yet, I decided to go with the 2.4L engine. Unfortunately to get the 2.4l engine after 2017, Honda only offers in the base model the LX. I would have loved to get the extra options offered in the EX model, but I absolutely refused to buy the turbo model until Honda fixes (poor climate heat/fuel-oil dilation). I think Honda only offering the 2.4l (tried and true) engine in the lower end base model is a big mistake. Happy with my vehicle so far and averaging 31.6 mpg, the seats are very firm and need some extra padding. I just wish Honda offered more options with the 2.4l!!

Don't ignore the oil dilution problems

Hope this helps you avoid the mistake that I made with this car. After reading a few reviews about gasoline in the oil in their 1.5L Turbo engines, I assumed that Honda had resolved the problem and purchased one in September 2018. Unfortunately, I'm having the same issues that so many others have reported. Honda is not being truthful (check their Youtube video where they say that gasoline oil dilution is perfectly normal), they say that it only happens in cold weather and on short drives (neither seem to be true), and their software programming fix which was first rolled out in China does was later cancelled and does not appear to be helping. They aren't fixing US CR-Vs yet, instead still claiming that there is no problem. In the mean-time, I'm changing the oil often hoping that it will help, but gasoline in the oil must be bad for an engine. It's a shame because the rest of the car is so good with great room, good features for the money.

2018 Honda CR V 4 month owner review

We have owned our 2018 CR V Touring since June of this year. Its November 2018 and we are trading in the car for another brand. Many problems with the car. Tire noise, road noise in the cabin that is unacceptable. Engine noise on acceleration that makes it sound like you have a lawn mower under the hood. Interior lights do not work. Bright lights do not turn automatically like they are supposed to and can not be turned manually. On two separate occasions we received error messages on the 2 safety systems (cruise control, land departure and crash avoidance) saying they had all failed and were inop. So surprised to have all these issues from a Honda.

Do Not Buy If in a Cold Climate

Buffalo Snow, 07/12/2018
2018 Honda CR-V EX-L 4dr SUV (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
100 of 107 people found this review helpful

I recently retired and wanted a 2018 Honda CRV EXL or Touring AWD model - brand spanking new, take me to my grave! All the reviews are great and no US reviews mention the excess gas in the oil problem - that would be the same problem that had Honda propose to recall over 300,000 CRVs in China only to be told, that's insufficient and have the sale of these turbo engines PROHIBITED! They are working on a fix. Sales of CRV tubos (and Civic turbos too!) are now allowed back into China but with stern warnings not to sell in cold climate areas. The problem is when the driver drives for short distances (i.e. just around town, not a work commute) the engine doesn't heat up sufficiently (and consequently you don't get much heat in the cabin either!). Honda is not changing anything for 2019 because the issue relates to cold (snowy, cold, windy, Buffalo, Wyoming, or mountainous type climates) - representing a relatively small area of Honda CRV sales (this is not a problem in CA or FL - but beware in the cold!). The local Honda GM would not sell me the car given the location and my expected usage. The Edmunds reviewer should have known this.

I wanted a fuel efficient utility vehicle to handle long distance commuting for a new job. Because I expect to put major miles on the vehicle, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money but still needed a vehicle that could go the long haul, be fuel efficient, and still have some cargo space area to haul stuff. Since my ex’s 2009 CRV has 200,000 miles and still going strong, I zeroed in on a new 2018 AWD LX trim with a normal 2.4L 4 cylinder. Fortunately, these reviews warned me about the problematic 1.5L turbo. Turbo’s are awesome in performance and fuel savings but to achieve that performance boost, you have to sacrifice something like longevity. It’s just common sense. I also wanted to clarify some misinformation here for some. Turbo’s use hot engine exhaust gas flow to spin a turbine that’s connected to a centrifugal pump that forces higher pressure fresh air into the engine, NOT exhaust gas! Higher pressure air means a denser fuel/air mixture and a bigger bang in the cylinder per each stroke. Supercharger’s push even higher gas pressures into the combustion chamber and are a better option but cost more. I do like my CRV-AWD and don't regret buying it. With that said, all cars have issues of some kind so here's mind. First one and a biggie for me was towing which was a huge disappointment. Honda claims 1500 lb towing capacity. So when I tow my 1000 lb trailer the engine does pretty well. However, the transmission is another issue. It vibrates like crazy at 60+ mph and shakes the whole car with even the slightest pedal. I think it's the CV belt is vibrating under the load and I worry about it breaking. So, Do Not Buy This Vehicle if you plan to tow something, you've been warned! The LX sound system is so-so because the 4 speakers are cheap but that is to be expected. The back-up camera is weak and practically useless at night, the center console is a pain, a cardboard box would be better, too much tire road noise, and the driver seat could use another half inch of padding. So would I buy this vehicle again? I'll have to say no, specifically because Honda lied about the towing. I wish they would bring back the previous traditional transmission. I'm sure it would be more robust than this CVT thing.

CR-V great or not

This is my second CR-V and I will say the tech value in this vehicle has greatly increased over the years. As it has always been, the CR-V is a very dependable and quality vehicle. My disappointment as it has been in the past with other CR-V is the ride noise; even though Honda has improved on this with the CR-V, it is still not up to where I feel it should be, more improvement needed in this category. The new turbo added to four cylinder makes for a more less strenuous ride especially on upgrades. From the stand point of gas mileage it is somewhat over rated, combined miles is suggested to be at around 30 although with very light footed driving this at present is only 26.5.

So far everything is great w the car except one thing. For me it's the way the phone is integrated in w the car. If listening to a music or satellite radio app on the phone and someone texts in, it'll drop what you're listening to and start speaking through the cars speakers what the text says. Other than that, I love the car. Coming from a Hyundai Elantra that was honestly scary to drive in snowy conditions, the CR-V handles fantastic and I get peace of mind especially w my kids in the car.

Update to this review after owning 2 years

The car was sold as previously stated. Purchased a 2004 Jeep Wrangler ragtop with 98k miles in excellent condition. Simple, basic, and functional... I've been doing my own PM because it is easy to work on. Of all the vehicles I've owned, I like this one the best and plan to take it into my retirement. Update: I sold the car with 29K miles on it. The potential for repairs and my needs motivated me to sell. Update: Driver's side seat belt does not retract; Cheap tires, on the verge of needing replacement after a year; the display / radio exhibits the same condition from time to time and I need to take the car to the dealership. /// Since this review I'm glad that Honda has at least acknowledged the "issue" and extended warranty. Presently I am having issues with my display and its electronic controls. The radio will come on from being off while traveling down the road. The display will go blank leaving only the manual on/off button working. It appears to be influenced by the cold and heat associated with the outlets in the same vicinity. I purchase my new 2018 Honda CR-V in November 2018, not realizing the apparent issues inherent with the vehicle’s engine. Surely had I known at the time I would not have purchased the car. Since December, learning of matters, I have been plugged into various sites and blogs regarding the issues on pretty much a daily basis. My drive to work is approximated 18 miles one way. Today on the travel, with the outside temperature reading 21 degrees on the car’s display, I noticed, for lack of heat, that it took the car about 8 miles to reach normal operating temperature, which is about half way on the gauge. At about 10 miles, a strong odor of gasoline filled the cockpit of the car. Looking down at the temperature gauge, it had fallen to the quarter mark. I consider driving down the road at 40mph and having the car fill will such a strong smell of gasoline a safety hazard and immediately found a spot to pull over, turned off the car, got out, opened the doors to air it out and looked under the hood where the odor remained. The drive is constant and in the country, so there is no reason for the gasoline odor or for the operating temperature drop except for the car itself. I am extremely disappointed and concerned since this seems to be one of the symptoms plaguing the car potentially leading to additional serious issues. I have just over 3000 miles on the car and purchased it because I plan on retiring soon and need dependable transportation when on a fixed income. The only thing that I’ve learned from Honda is an excuse, that it is a cold climate issue and will be addressed in those areas. I live in South Carolina where 21 degrees in the winter is not uncommon and hardly considered a cold weather climate. I demand to know the root cause for the obvious issues with the car and a fix for the long term. Otherwise I want the vehicle replaced with another that doesn’t have an engine associated with these problems or my hard earned money refunded, so that I can look for a vehicle elsewhere.

After exhaustive research on crossovers, numerous spreadsheets, etc, I had narrowed my choice down to the Honda CRV EX, the Toyota RAV4 XLE, and the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T. I ended up with the Honda and after approx 1000 miles, I have no regrets. This is a very practical car, but also quite fun one as long as I take it out of ECON mode. The turbo engine has some serious kick to merge into traffic, and then once I have merged, I put it into ECON mode. After numerous trips from Denver into the mountains for skiing, I am still averaging over 31mpg. I am still learning all the features of the amazing entertainment system. We are really looking forward to our first road trip with mountain bikes in it! The RAV4 just felt simple and primitive inside and the big 19" wheels on the Hyundai made it ride way too rough for my comfort.

We bought a house with a steep driveway. Our Accord struggled to get to the top when it was snow covered. The CRV with AWD climbs right up no problem. This is our third CRV. Only 1000 miles so far, but pleased at this point. CVT works well, and the interior is comfortable and quiet. The radio and ac controls are better than the 17 Accord we traded in, but still not quite to our liking. Would love to show a Honda engineer what we don’t like about it. Overall a very nice car. UPDATE: 7500 miles...no problems to report...still pleased. UPDATE: 13,000 miles...a minor recall for emissions issue needs completed next oil change. Walk away locking sometimes not reliable; you have to make sure it actually works. Going to complain about it next oil change. UPDATE...not pleased with factory tires on Ohio snow...great traction from a stop...not good when stopping on snowy road. Will be upgrading to a M&S rated tire. UPDATE: Replaced OEM tires with Michelin Cross Climate. Much improved snow and ice traction. Averaging 30-32 mpg. Walk away locking and Honda Sensing sometimes do odd things. Would disable the feature that rolls down all the windows and opens sunroof if I could. It’s possible to inadvertently do this. Would be bad if this happened in rain, or parking lot. Still overall great car. UPDATE:1/16/2020 Automatic braking sometimes engages for no reason. Dealer of course can find no problem. Will continue pursuing this issue. UPDATE: 7/5/2022 - 43k miles Still satisfied overall. Automatic braking is under investigation by NHTSA, so I’m not the only person who has issues with it. Shadows will cause unintended braking. Pretty dissatisfied with the dealership service department. They apparently think most customers are ignorant. I complained after a recent oil change that the tires were overinflated, according to the tire placard. The young lady’s response was “We do that because they will ‘settle down’ on the way home.” Ridiculous. Tire pressure increases as you drive the car. Also recommended turning the rotors, but not replacing the brake pads with 40k miles on them. An expensive service that would soon be repeated when the pads wear out. UPDATE …January 2023. Still issues with automatic braking activating for no reason. Driving under a bridge, the shadows set it off. hopefully NHTSA investigation will result in a recall. Otherwise, the car has been trouble free.

2018 LX AWD is near perfect

Yes we bought the base LX with the 2.4 engine and don't weep about not getting the turbo. My thought is this, the 2.4 has been around decades and steadily Hondaized (up dated and improved) and the turbo? Hmmm. Plenty of pep, there is only a tenth of a second between the two engines 0-60, A bit noisy on some road surfaces probably having to do with "ECO Bridgestone" tires and they will likely wear in a bit quieter. First tank was 31 mpg. Quality is high and fit and finish is obviously excellent. Lots of space. I don't miss all the "add on tecky" stuff in the (much) higher priced model. The EX is almost 3K above the LX. As a genuine old timer I do the speed limit and am conservative and careful and it pays off. Found that if you have it set on the ECO mode here in Oklahoma you will find the air conditioning might be a bit weak. Switch off ECO and the cooling improves! Overall this is a great car and I recommend this model over the higher priced ones with all their gizmos. Out the door at 25200 an LX with awd. By the way the CVT is unintrusive and power is right there when needed. Drive one, you'll like it. Best part is the secure stance on the road, it just feels so buckled down and well planted. A great driving experience. Update: It is three years old and only has 11k miles because it is driven locally most of the time. Around town locally 24-25 mpg. On the highway touching 30mpg. No mechanical problems at all. Not the greatest radio in the LX's but other than that no complaint. Not a slouch getting on interstates. A bit noisy inside as it doesn't get the insulation the higher priced ones get. But hey, my hearing is bad anyway at 80 yrs. Great car highly recommend. These days you don't get the 2.5 engine anymore and must take the little turbo four--to bad. Now 5 years old, just 20k miles. Local driving mpg 27-28. Highway 31-33 at the speed limit legal. Good power, great when the VTEC kicks in. Sadly you can't get this 2.4 engine in the CRV anymore, it's great. No mechanical problems of any kind. Did have to replace the battery. Did it myself. Just changed engine air filter myself and will change cabin air filter soon myself. Great car very reliable. New tires in about 10k..

numerous complaints that the interior temperature never heats up. Honda wont admit to the problem but there are many unhappy owners that can't warm up or get enough heat to even defrost a window. Very unsafe for that. Heat drops in cold climates as soon as the engine RPM drops so watch out for frozen bodies at railroad crossings. Great car if you are in the tropics. sold it off a year after i got it. Between no heat and oil migration into gas it wasnt worth keeping. Too bad it was one of the nicest riding cars I ever owner.

Severe Oil Dilution - premature engine wear

We have invested a lot into our brand new Touring, including many accessories, hoping to keep this car for a long time so even in 10 years our now growing up daughter would enjoy it as her first car. Our trust in Honda reliability was crushed when I found our engine oil severely overfilled, black, thin as water and smelling like gasoline after only 4200 miles since brand new. Thorough research shows these new engines have a serious problem of oil dilution by gasoline. This has been already reported by masses, and is the reason Honda stopped sales of CRV in China. To our surprise, Honda acknowledges the problem but has not released any resolution aside for free oil changes. And local dealerships exercise their common deniability policy as much as they can. Our engine has already incurred premature wear and I will fight to get our money back under lemon law because premature engine failures and high maintenance is not what we signed up for when buying a Honda. I will most likely never trust Honda again. Two more cons in this car: rain sensing wiper feature is terrible - not reliable and annoyingly inaccurate. And the design of interior on driver side is made where side of my knees are always hitting hard plastic sharp edges causing constant knee pain while driving.

Test drive of 2018 CRV a deal breaker

John, 03/30/2018
2018 Honda CR-V EX 4dr SUV (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
61 of 67 people found this review helpful

After a lot of research, I decided to trade in my 2013 CRV EX for a new 2018 model. Went to Honda dealer with old title, finances set and was ready to buy. All I had left to do was take a test drive and make the deal. What a disappointment! There are many great things about the 2018, but after a few minutes behind the wheel I can't understand all the terrific reviews. The biggest problems for me are that, unlike my 2013, this vehicle has annoying engine noise when accelerating and a delay and surge in the transmission. My 2013 is quiet and smooth. I know that a turbo and CVT are a different technology and to some these characteristics may not matter, but to me it's a step backward. Another problem is that in order to benefit from the lane departure feature, you have to be going above 45 mph. 90% of my driving is below 45 mph, so it is useless for suburban or country road driving. I read that the RAV4 operates at 32 mph, which makes more sense. The screen on my 2013 is set back into the dash shielded from glare. The new model has the screen exposed, making it harder to see in daytime. The test car had been driven 75 miles, and the display said it was getting just 23 mpg which made me suspicious of its fuel economy. Also, the color that I wanted (molten lava red) only comes with white seats which are impractical and are too bright and stark for a car interior. My wife loves the 2013 central console for holding her handbag, but the 2018 console is two level, closes in the area, and is not easy to use for holding a handbag. The Honda sales manager heard my reservations and offered a great deal, but I left appreciating my 2013 all the more.

At 5000 miles, had to have the oil changed because it was black. Approximately 2000 miles later- 6 months after I bought the SUV new- it almost stalled on me 3 times on the highway. I checked the oil- it was already black and smelled like gasoline. I called to make an appointment- the dealership said they never heard of this problem. They could get it in a week later. I then smelled raw gas in the cab. I called them back and dropped the SUV off for them to look at it when they could. After 1 week- I called for an update. They were working on it for two days and said they cannot find anything wrong. But they did some computer update that came out 5 days ago for the stalling issue. He then told me that the black oil wasn't an issue- but they changed it anyway to go along with the update. They wanted to keep it one more night to test drive it - he assured me there was nothing wrong. This morning- he said they test drove it this morning- it still has the stalling issue- they will have to keep it until at least Monday when they can get a hold of HQ. The dealership is clearly giving me the run around! I have learned that Honda has had this gas getting into the oil issue with the 2017s as well. I am not that lucky to happen to buy the only bad engine at this top Denver dealership. Honda is supposed to have an appropriate update mid November. But as it stands- I have a junk engine and just threw $31,000 into the wind. But hey- I got to drive it for 6 months unknowingly putting my life at risk and other people's lives driving behind me.

Before I get into details, let me say I have been a big fan of Acura/Honda over the years and the CRV is the fourth Honda product I've owned. But, it seems to me the company is becoming more bland with every passing year. The vehicles are lacking excitement overall. I unloaded my 2007 Sequoia in favor of modern efficiency offered by the CRV, and I think I was expecting more satisfaction in the ownership experience. The CRV is good at many things, but not really great at anything in particular (except gas mielage) once you get past the new car euphoria in the first few weeks. The positive: solid gas mileage and a ton of useful interior space for a small footprint, very comfortable seats, a lot of value in the EX trim. But, it's generally under-powered (a 2.0L turbo would be a nice option), somewhat noisy, and the CVT makes me feel like I'm sitting on a rubber band that sort of stretches but never quite does anything. Eco mode is dangerous if getting on the highway with any traffic at all due to dismal acceleration. The adaptive cruise control is quirky, and has unexpectedly and abruptly slowed the vehicle down on the highway causing me to be concerned about getting hit from the rear. The doors feel tinny, and the designers almost overdid the numbers of angles and curves that are incorporated into the dashboard design. I personally would prefer a traditional style speedometer and tachometer to the digital display. The phone integration is sort of a pain and very poor sound quality according to people on the other end of the call who can never clearly hear the person in the car. The radio and system electronics are just ok, but too many features are locked out when the car is actually moving. Could not get up my driveway in 6 inches of snow this past winter - not sure if it's the eco-friendly tires or lame AWD system. This vehicle is mostly used by our daughter who is a new driver. I appreciate the general safety features, excellent visibility, and not worried about her getting out of control with too much power. This vehicle will more than satisfy most people who are not really tuned into the driving experience and just want to get from point A to point B with minimal hassle. Sort of wish we got a pre-owned X3 or Q5. I'll stick to my VW GTI and let the kids use the CRV.

With all the hype over the new CRV we were prepared to be impressed and likely buy one. We'd had a 2006 which our daughter now has, it was nice but the ride and noise were an issue. From what I'd read I expected the new one to be much smoother and quieter than they were a decade ago. Not so. Road noise is better but it can't be considered a quiet car. What was really disappointing was that Honda seems unable to fix the ride. Road imperfections are translated into a jittery unsettled ride that you feel in your neck before long. THe 1.5L turbo was a disappointment. While perhaps better the combination of modest power and the CVT just leaves it feeling....just adequate. WHat Honda did do well is the new interior is a home run, far nicer than some of the competitors. But they don't have the suspension engineering that Ford and others do, so once the car begins to move you realize it is still a bit crude. Honda needs to hire some German suspension engineers....

I bought this car November, 2018. So far the comfort and control of the car have been good. On the day I came to pick up the car, salesman could not set up the radio with Sirius.I got frustrated and left. My son-in-law set up the radio. The problem now is that the voice command works if you call someone in your contacts. If you call a number not in your contacts list, the voice recognition can not process the call. I went back yesterday to show this to the same salesman. He acknowledged that my car was not working when he tried to call his own cell phjone. The we went to check another new Honda CRV on the lot. Same problem. He was very dismissive and said, "well I guess it doesn't work in any of the CRV's". He seemed to think that this was an acceptable answer. I did not. I said you have a defective voice recognition system that needs to be corrected. I'mcurious to see what happens. Very annoying, frustrating and disappointing.

I traded in my 2009 Audi A4 because I wanted as many modern safety features as possible while not paying a huge price. I'm generally pleased with this vehicle, but there are a few disappointment. The CR-V has radar located in the center of the front grille which is used for the automated braking feature and assitive cruise control. It does not work in heavy (or sometimes even moderate) precipitation. It also only prevents head-on collisions but not accidents if the other vehicle is not directly in front of your car. Visibility over the driver's right shoulder is minimal and does not help with safety. Also, the new Hondas lack a CD player which many owners find really troubling. Plus there's no way to plug in an MP3 or CD player externally.

I purchased my 2018 CRV new. I have had nothing but issues with the heat and defrost functions. I took it back to the dealer four times already and their standard response is that is just the way new cars are now, they don't produce heat. I have even purchased a thermostat for the interior because there is just no heat. The ONLY way I can get the stupid car to heat is if I drive it longer than 40 minutes, then it finally starts to warm up around 70. The windshield is a nightmare, the defrost does not keep it clean of snow and ice. In this area of Wisconsin, that is a necessity, not an option. Either I missed this, or the reviews by Consumer Reports and Edmonds are not reporting this defect. Shame on you, as had I know this, I would never have purchased this car. I can't say enough negative about Honda and the CR-V. *Update, it handles HORRIBLY in the snow and on the ice. I would recommend the Subaru Forester, much better handling in the snow and on ice.

There is now WOW factor even for 2018 offering - especially for any model previous Honda owners. Interior parts like overhead light switcher are the SAME identical breakage prone switches found in a 2004 Accord. REALLY. For a few dollars Honda should freshen/modernize interior gadgets. Engine and Transmission preform phenomially.

Overall, I’m very pleased. I love: Apple Car Play, Honda Sensing, 3 views for the reverse camera, and cross traffic alert. Some things I’ve noticed: driver side speaker cuts in and out in calls, volume of text read or voice prompts is very loud and doesn’t respond to volume knob. Also, ticking noise coming from right front of the vehicle, when accelerating.

My former vehicle was a Honda Odyssey and was a great vehicle, but it was time to change , after ten years of good service. My only complaint about my purchase is the noise. I think that I may be a bit more sensitive to it after driving a much larger and heavier car for so many years. I love the handling of the CRV and I truly no longer need a larger vehicle with three row seating. In some ways it feels like a sports car with great visibility and excellent technology installed. I still feel like I made a good decision, I only wish the car was little quieter. This is still a good car. I still am not used to the noise and wish they'd made it a tad quieter, considering the price tag on the car. It still drives and handles well. In fact, the handling was good enough to keep me from being killed in a head-on crash vs. an F250 truck. I was able to maneuver out of it's way enough to only be clipped.

Great SUV but lack power

It is a great SUV interiorially. Comfortable, spacious and instrumentation is very intuitive. However, it lacks the power going up a hill, and breaking distance takes lomger than expected. If you have driven V6 or VTEC powered cars, the CR-V may need some getting use to.

Unfortunately I learned that the new environmentally friendly coating on the wires is appealing to rodents. I have two friends whose wires have been chewed and damage incurred on their new Honda crv's. Since we do not have a garage and have had mice build a nest in two of our previous vehicles, I would not have chosen this car if I had known abou mom t this. It appears to be a problem with Toyotas as well. There is not an easy cure.

2018 Honda CRV-Get the EX at least!

Get at least the EX. You get a ton more features for not that much more, and navigation is not necessary with the apple play app-you can pull it right up on your screen. I'm very practical and did a lot of research prior to buying- this vehicle suits my needs perfectly. Lots of room in the front and back, tons of cargo room-love that the 8 way power adjustment on the drivers seat. The only bad thing I can say is the driver's seat is a little hard, but I solved this by buying a cushion to sit on. Other than that I think they hit it on the mark with the 2018 CRV!

This car is easy to get into and out of and fun to operate. Visibility of the road ahead is clear and the added safety features are what I wanted and need at this stage of my driving career. The car is comfortable. My back feels the lumbar support. I love the turbocharged engine which gets me onto the highways quickly and safely. I would recommend the Honda CR-V to anyone looking for a new car.

Took my car in for state inspection dash went crazy...everything blinking on dash. All systems failed inspection. Car was fine day before. Called dealer..."oh this happens...bring it in, we'll reprogram ". Got in car to go to dealer 1 1/2 mile down the road it cleared. Passed inspection next day. This makes me crazy!

Update 11/13/21-Our Wrangler is now nearly 3 years old & zero issue-Not one. 2018 Honda CRV had nothing but issues. Navigation glitches, sound system terrible, cheap leather, gasoline in the oil rising over 2 quarts in 3 months even after the update, engine never heats up in the winter, interior of vehicle was always freezing in winter due to engine not heating up, absolutely worst new car purchase ever. Update-Because of the issues with 18 CRV-it was traded in. Given Honda's poor response and quality I most likely will not look at Honda products again. Purchased a new '19 Wrangler over a year ago now. Have had zero issues and is surprising in how much I like it. Original Honda CRV review- Engine oil dilution from gasoline getting mixed in causing oil level to be too high-no fix. Audio awful. Infotainment system glitches regularly. Arm rest inconveniently slides forward and backward when u try to adjust ur seating position. Foot activated hatch opening rarely works. Gas mileage varies substantially with temperature. Dealer experiences have been poor. Question if glitches actually happen and ask for video of it. Not impressed at all. $35k can buy a lot better SUV than this. Mazda, chevy and Toyota all are nicer.

For reference, I am coming from a 2011 Subaru Forester 2.5X premium, cold weather package (I live in MN). I got rid of it after 2 manual transmission problems this summer, and upgraded to this CR-V. My initial review before 1,000 miles: I really like the powertrain of this car. The CVT feel takes some getting used to but brisk acceleration is there when you need it (but response is slower in ECO mode), and it works really well with the 1.5 turbo engine when driving around town. Most of my miles are highway commuting to work and I'm getting 32-ish miles per gallon so far, which is impressive. I am also really impressed with the active safety systems in the car. They seem to work really well, and I appreciate the lane keep assist system when driving on the highway to work. It reduces stress and hand fatigue guiding the steering wheel. I also really like the interior quality. Fit is excellent and and finish is ok for the price I paid. The hard plastic along the console in the leg well is the only poor touch; you can bang your knee into it easily so I think it should be a softer padded material. The infotainment system isn't really intuitive, but it works well enough. I'll probably be ok when I get used to it, but it's not a high point of the car. That said, I do appreciate having Android Auto so I can use Goggle Maps and navigate that way. I'll update this in a while and throw in some reliability ratings after I've put some miles on. I've been looking at the oil level frequently to check for gas in there, so far none smelled. To clarify, I have an EX-L AWD, and paid LX AWD MSRP. I didn't negotiate really hard - I wanted EX-L but couldn't find one in town where I live slightly used so I went for the new one. Update: After 1 year of ownership I have no problems to report. No gas in oil, electronics work great, heat-A/C system is fine. During summer I get 34-37 mpg, in winter 30-32, so I'm happy with that. All in all, no complaints and I'm a happy owner, although it is disconcerting getting letters from Honda extending the engine warranty and letters from lawyers for class action lawsuits. At 2.5 years, Car runs great. No repairs or dealer visits other than basic maintenance. Very minor squeaks in a few places, no rattles. Great car, would buy again! Update for 3 years of ownership: Trouble free car for the most part. The infotainment system feels outdated but still works ok. Mechanically and electrically all is well. Maintenance costs aren't too bad, either Only issue is a stiff sun visor on the driver's side. All in all, great reliable car. Update 9-9-2022: continued trouble free motoring. Only costs are scheduled maintenance and it's not expensive. No gas in oil problems either. I did have to replace the sun visor which wasn't super cheap. 2023 update: no repairs yet at 85k miles. Vehicle drives great. I plan to hold it for another 100k if possible.

Noisy Cabin

Tom, 06/22/2018

I bought a brand new 2018 Honda CRV - LX a little over a month ago. After driving for a couple of weeks subsequent to date of purchase, I noticed a very noisy cabin. On certain roads, I can't even hold a conversation with my spouse in the vehicle. The cabin noise started to irritate me so much that I changed the Bridgestone Ecopia tires (came in with the car) to some quiet Michelin tires but noticed minimal cabin noise reduction. I bought a can of Permatex to coat the front wheel well liners but noticed no difference in noise. Lastly, I purchased some rubber door insulators and insulated the 2 front doors. Again, I noticed no noise reduction. I am very unhappy with the cabin noise. I can't believe Honda has not caught up with the rest of the other car makers. This is my first time and my last time purchasing a Honda unless Honda does a better job of insulating their vehicles in the future.

Hands-Free Phone Distortion Issue

J. Brown, 10/04/2018

Purchased our first Honda, a 2018 CR-V EXL AWD, in June, 2018. Soon learned that my hands-free phone component had lots of distorted background noise on the recipient's end of call. The distortion sounds like my windows are down (they aren't); I am underwater (I’m not) and got worse with higher rates of speed. The dealer service dept. replaced both microphones, updated the software, paired different phones both with my vehicle and with ten (10) other new 2018 CR-Vs off their lot, all to no avail - distortion was present with all vehicles. Distortion problem exists whether using Bluetooth or plugging phone into USB ports and with every type of cell phone tested. Visited dealer service dept. seven (7) times in three (3) months. Said there was nothing else they could do. Called Honda Corporate Customer Service who stated: “it’s not technically happening within my vehicle, it is working as it was designed to work (really?), it cannot be improved upon…case closed! They offered no other compensation. Took vehicle to different dealer one hour away. They confirmed distortion noise with our vehicle and with four (4) other new 2018 CR-Vs of various trim packages off their lot. Distortion problem exists with all vehicles tested. Final conclusion to date: Perhaps a software compatibility issue; however Corporate Honda has NO solution and does not appear to be seeking one.

I am really upset on 2018 CRV Touring. Before buying I did test drive for about 2-5 miles and everything was ok. But after driving car about 50Miles, started to hear very loud noise like a drum noise/rattling noise. This noise is specific to Touring model as stated by dealer. If I knew at the beginning why I am going to spend $35K for a car. Now I have to live with that noise. I strongly advise to new buyers do not buy touring at all. Heres is the link for recorded video:https://youtu.be/6oxQjXOQRVo

My wife is 5ft-8in and I am 6ft, each of us had a problem with our right legs aching and going numb on long drives. The front seat bottom cushions are too short, and the gas pedal angle is to severe. Loving the car in all other aspects, but had to sell it after a short period of time due to the leg discomfort. A real disappointment!

After driving over 350,000 miles commuting to work, mostly with Mercedes Diesels, a Toyota Camry and Ford Tarus I really like this ride. First it is easy to look at. Second easy to get in and out. The Touring model has technology that takes a little time to learn to use. That why after a 5000 mile trip across the southern US, old route 66 a trip to Fla. etc. I can report: NO ISSUE with gasoline in oil, First oil change at 9850 with 30 % oil life on engine computer. Average mpg over 32.7. Best observed over 38. Worst 25 mpg going across the Texas high planes with a 40-50 mph head wind. Overall comfort of the drivers seat is excellent and the passengers seat average due to limited power adjustments. This is the first vehicle I have owned that almost steers itsself with the lane keeping feature allowing the driver to see more than just the road safely. A great retirement vehicle.

We own a 2018 CR-V Touring and love it. Had a '09 ... a '12 ... and a '15. Maybe that's why both my wife and I appreciate all they've done to improve this vehicle. My only complaint is that I really miss the blind side camera out '15 Touring had. That's a small price to pay for a CR-V that has a cabin that feels far more roomy and more upscale than its predecessors. And, they gave us back a volume tuning knob. Our others were all leased but we purchased this one and plan on keeping it for at least 10 years. Great vehicle I'd recommend to anyone who doesn't need a 3rd row seat.

Exactly what I thought I was getting. The only things I wish Honda would improve is adding ventilated seats and a gap in the bottom spoke on the steering wheel for those of us who like to have our hand in the center of the bottom part on the steering wheel. Averaging 30 mpg and that's with city driving and 80-ish interstate driving.

Previously, we owned a Honda Pilot Touring, 2009. After 168,000 miles we felt it was time to trade but after children were grown and on their own, we no longer needed the cargo/interior space that the Pilot offered, so we decided to down size to the CRV. Our daughter has driven a CRV for several years so we were familiar with it. This 2018 model is a vast improvement over the 2007 she has. After 10,000 miles we are very impressed. Great fuel economy, plenty of acceleration and overall the new generation CRV is top quality. We were not aware of the fuel/oil dilution problems that have been reported by some owners in colder climates before the purchase and have had no issues with ours. Perhaps being produced mid year in 2018, this model does not have that. I check the oil frequently and have not detected it being over full or having any fuel odor. The servicing dealership has assured me that if this should become a problem, they and Honda will provide a remedy to correct this or any other issues that may arise. Even though the new CRV is smart phone/audio compatible, opting in for the factory navigation was a must for us as we felt we gave up nothing, other than the rear entertainment system, by trading the Pilot. We are only familiar with the EX-L trim version CRV but felt the additional up charge for the Touring model and it's few extra features was not necessary for our needs. We would highly recommend this to anyone considering it.

Aging is not easy but the Honda CRV makes the adjustment smoother. Easy in/out, comfortable seating, legroom front/back, easy access to trunk at a good height, lighted dash, easy to read dash, plenty of storage options, tech made easy, doors open fully so easy for family/dog :) to get in and be buckled into carseat.
