Honda needs to address severe wind noise in their 2011 CRV

This is my first Honda, that I love in general. I took my first Pacific Coastal Highway trip and the mileage was not as promised, but the car rode nicely. Except, that on the freeways the windows wind noise is severe. I test drove it around the dealership and never on the freeway at 70 miles, my mistake. However, I do want Honda to know as dealership says it is a design problem and cannot be fixed. I sent my first payment to Honda Financing this month, in pain, as I am not entirely happy about this severe wind noise that ruins the conversation with your passengers. Let's do something as a group and make Honda aware of this and request a fix. Honda knows better than to ignore this problem.

Crash Worthiness

3K miles on the CRV and someone crossed a double yellow line and my daughter hit head on into them. The CRV saved her life. It has a five star crash rating and traveling at speed of 45/47 mph....she walked away without any injury. Air bags activated, seal belts and the headrest protected her. No matter what minor problems a car may have, nothing matters more than a well built car that will sustain an impact and have the occupants walk away!

Saved my son's life!

Last weekend my son had an accident with my 2011 Honda CRV due to speed and road conditions and totalled my car. He hit a rock wall at a high rate of speed and rolled end for end. AND WALKED AWAY!! He is 6'6" and weighs 250lbs. Only had scratchs and a bump on his head. This was is destroyed but it saved my son's life. He owns a 2002 Honda Civic and if he was in that he would be dead. I am VERY pleased and happy with this car and how safe it really is. He hit the wall so hard that the left front wheel, tire, axle, and shock came out in one piece. Alot of people (me included) look at the "pretty" of a car and don't really think about the safety. Well built car!! Thank you Honda!

Updated: July 2018: More and more impressed with the CR-V as time goes on. Change the oil, rotate the tires and keep driving. I was issued a new 2014 EX as a company car and having now had both for a number of years. I have to say I believe the 2011 is better in every way with the exception of the 2014 is a little peppier. The build quality of the 2011 is better, the gauges look much more refined, and the interior materials just seems nicer. We'll drive this thing until it says "no more" but I suspect that's years away. Update July 2017: Best car purchase I've made. 90,000 miles of comfortable, trouble free driving. We could trade up to the new model but just can't justify doing so. This V still feels brand new, no rattles or signs of age. Shows no interior wear and tear. We put Blizzaks on in the winter and are comfortable going anywhere in the Rockies in any conditions. Terrific little SUV. 60,000 + miles and no repairs. Service has been only recommended factory oil changes, etc. Took a trip cross country last month and the V averaged 27 mph with pretty aggressive highway driving. Could be a little quieter but we like the ride. We have the ex-l trim and the seats are very comfortable and supportive over long distances. Added Honda all season floor and cargo mats and haul around whatever we can fit with no issues.

I bought a new 2009 Outback Ltd for my wife for Mother's Day 2009. It was good car just not comfortable comfortable. After 18 months my wife asked me to to get her something different. I suggested an RX350, a Highlander or a Pilot. She said she wanted something smaller so I did some research went to the local Honda dealer and he made me an offer that was too good to be true on a 2011 CRV EX-L. My wife fell in love with it, so did our daughter inlaw and daughter along with their husbands. Both girls got CRVs within two months of my wife. The entire family made the switch within the past year from Toyotas, SAABs and VWs to Honda.

Bought this car new in 2011. Now has 253,000 miles on it with original transmission. Brake pads and spark plugs replaced at 210,000 miles. Diligently follow all recommended service. Has dealer installed leather seats. Get 85000 miles from tires. Best car I’ve ever owned. Replaced a Lexus RX which gave poor service.

Recent 3,000 mile trip across US, down to Mexico was a good test: 1) Excellent fuel economy -- ave 31 mpg overall 2) packed in more luggage than seemed possible 3) Very comfortable, fun to drive 4) smooth, excellent steering, sturdy suspension 5) amazingly stable to heavy cross winds

I was sooo happy to get into this crossover! This vehicle is my 2nd best car I've ever had. (G6 was #1). However. . . Be aware that rear differentials might not be sealed like they should be. I had about 7000 miles on it when it felt like a flat tire. My son and I were stranded on the side of an interstate for 2hrs. 2 days later I found out that my new CR-V had thrown a differential gear due to lack of differential fluid! Now why would anyone need to by a Honda insurance plan for a NEW car? Little did I know that I would need it at 7000 miles. If you buy a new one, make sure there is a full differential inspection. You will definitely thank yourself if you do.

First Honda and SUV. Only 300 miles on it but so far so good. Seems to be a great little SUV, as long as you drive easy. The 4 cy is not made for driving like you stole it or pulling of any kind. Ave mpg of 28, best I got so far was 33.2 mpg. That was driving like an old lady on a nice calm warm sunny day. However making the same trip in very winding conditions produced 22.1 mpg. So the 4 cy needs good conditions. Iam very pleased with the comfort, both front and rear seats. The rear seats are much better than the RAV4, especially for car seats. I agree with others that there are blind spots but no problems with wind noise or anyting else at this point.

After months of research I finally narrowed our choice down to the CRV or the Rav4. Test drove both 3 times and found both suvs competent but overall I thought the CRV was superior. First, all the talk about power, all you hear is the CRV is underpowered compared to competitors like the RAV4, Bull!! The reviewers even Edmunds compares the CRV to the 6 cyl RAV4 but when compared to the 4cyl version the crv holds its own and then some. The rav4's sold are 85% 4 cylinders!! Come on reviews be fair! I find the crv's power just fine. I'm 6'2:" and 275 lbs and find the driving area comfortable and best of all the CRV is fun to drive! Honda quality is 2nd to none

Researched for months, was concerned by reports of lack of power and excessive road noise. Test drove 3 CRVs; the 3rd was so quiet and fun to drive (shod with the much criticised Continental tires), both in town and on the highway. Remarkable, considering some negative reviews. No hesitation buying this CRV -- replaced my aging faithful V6 Odyssey minivan. Fuel economy of 25 mpg so far in mixed 70:30 town:highway driving, but I do have a light foot. Very pleased.

1 month into my new purchase with less than 600 miles I was a bit unsure I did the right thing. However my dealer helped me through resolving my issues. My issue was the rough ride due to a large degree the factory tires (Continental) which rode okay on new smooth roads but not on any others. My dealer worked out a deal with me and I traded out the Contintals for Michelins (required extensive on line research in Honda Forums etc) now and all is good. When purchasing this vehicle I would negotiate a tire upgrade before driving away. I have owned Subarus, Toyotas, and yes now I can add my first Honda to my list of quality cars.

I have had my honda for four ys.now.It is good on gas but for this summer it is not.I had to replace my tires at 34000 miles already because they dry rotted and i just replaced my back breaks and rotors at 40000 miles, they were completely gone. The rims are steel painted and is coming off-looks like crap!It rides shaky and you feel everything on the road,it is not a smooth ride.I would not get another one.The cloth on the seats also are not good quality. It does handle in the snow and rain real well.If I rated this on a scale of 1-10 i give it a 7.

After searching for a compact SUV that would fit our needs as a young family (namely, plenty of rear seating and cargo space), we eventually settled for the CR-V. Despite being one of the older models in the market, its specs are still tough to beat. Slicker models such as the Tucson, Tiguan simply offer too little cargo space. Rear visibility is also not as good. The CR-Vs interior also looks upscale, unlike the RAV4. My complaints so far include lack of storage space in the front, weak acceleration, and lackluster fuel economy (I have been averaging about 21mpg). The navigation maps also look dated (reminds me of Windows 3.1 from the early 90s), and don't pronounce street names.

I have had this CR V since fall of 2010 and have logged 67,000 miles on it without a repair. Had to replace the Continental Tires @22k and the dealer split the cost with me. I about to replace the rear brakes and tires and cannot complain. My daughters both have 2011 CR Vs and with small children they love the cars because of the safety and reliability.

TEAM HONDA OF BATON ROUGE,La offered a trade in programs on 12/29/11 I traded my wonderful 2009 in for a 2011 CRV. Starting in Feb 2012 I have been bringing my car in asking them to take the horrible vibartion and noise out of the engine. I have asked to get mey 2009 back, another 2011 or I would pay more for a 2012 ( in the 2012 they FIXED the vibration). Ihave been told this is NORMAL for the 2011 and there is NOTHING they can do. To stop the noise and vibration I have to turn my AC off when I am sitting still in the car. If anyone suggest help I will appreciate it.

Medium/Low Mile Maintenance Nightmare

Tucker W, 06/29/2017

Here's the deal: I'm a car guy and die hard Toyota guy, but I respect Hondas and I promise you I am taking all my bias out of this. My father bought this CRV for my mother with 80,000 on the odometer from a HONDA dealership who did a "pre-sale inspection" and said it passed with flying colors. The car currently has 87,000 and has been a maintenance nightmare. Brakes had to be replaced at 83,000, an easy job and only takes an afternoon in the garage, but it was frustrating that the dealership pre-sale inspection missed simple maintenance like that. Then, at 86,000 the alternator died and fried the battery as well. I've done a lot of alternator jobs before, and this one is the most difficult to get to. I do not recommend doing this at home as you have to pull the power steering pump. An OEM honda alternator was also $425, and a $60 serpentine belt. Not 300 miles later, the clutch on the A/C compressor seized and broke the brand spanking new serpentine belt. I don't mess with A/C systems at all, so we took it to a mechanic friend. $1700 down the drain. At this point I'm just expecting the next $3000 repair job. It's slow to accelerate, handles terribly, what more is there to say? So much for Honda Reliability...DO NOT BUY WITHOUT A WARRANTY.

This is my second CRV - in my 2009 the driver's seat kept coming apart and the same thing keeps happening in my 2011. I work from home so I don't drive that much and feel that the seat should still be in excellent condition. The plastic molding around the seat keeps separating and the leather cover tears where it is hooked on. Since they upgraded the computer the mpg on the road dropped from 29 mpg to 24 mpg and in town from 24 mpg to 17 mpg. I am getting ready to trade it because of this.

Not What I Was Expecting From A Honda

I live in Wisconsin and bought the CRV so I wouldn't have problems in the snow. In that regard it's great. Actually I like a lot about it but two big problems really make me question buying another Honda in the future. The first to show up was that it can't make it between oil changes without adding oil. Honda knows there is a problem on some CRV's but after mileage test, says mine is fine and I just need to check the oil frequently. Never had a car that I had to worry about adding quarts of oil between oil changes. The second problem just happened. The air conditioner stopped working. This is at 7 years and 7 months and a little over 80,000 miles. Honda has a service bulletin involving the air conditioner and extended the warranty to 7 years or 100,000 miles because they know they have a defect. Mine was a hair over $1,000 to repair and Honda would not help cover the cost at all. Getting ready to sell it before it has another expensive repair especially since the oil problem makes me believe I will not get many miles out of the engine. Toyota seems to get better marks for reliability so it looks like it's time for a switch.

We have owned the CRV for about a year now and so far we are happy about it. It is NOT perfect and we still have some unresolved minor rattle sound coming from the front passenger side dash board, but again NO car is perfect, period. The car is the best selling SUV in USA, and on kbb enjoy the #7 slot for the best resale value award. Reliability history is great. With the money paid, I found that the interior design (especially the trip computer, etc.), provide excellent value. The 2012 model also improved the roof strength so I think safety wise it should be a all 5-stars vehicle. Build quality in general is good (can't compare to a Mercedes, but not bad either). We like it so far.

I just hope that all car makers can be like Honda or Toyota which continue to put reliability and resale value as #1 priority for their cars

If you mainly highway commute, this CRV is near perfect. City driving with steep hills, speed bumps, and tight curves causes undesirable engine luging and lack of power. The transmission does not let the engine work in it's comfortable RPM range. A design flaw not present in the fun to drive 2015 Kia Soul. Since this review we have sold the CRV due to the poorly mapped transmission and overly tight torque converter. Driving the hills and curves in Hawaii was like whipping a lazy mule to keep the engine from lugging. The engine is a fine piece of equipment but the bean counters killed the transmission/torque converter to the detriment of the vehicle driving dynamics.

I've had the CRV for 6 months and it does everything well. It is practical, comfortable, quiet, and relatively efficient. Very easy to load and unload cargo, and holds plenty of gear with the seats up or down. Lots of head room, and the rear seats recline. My biggest complaint is lack of power, but it's no too bad. It handles, rides and stops well. A 6 or more speed transmission would help. The tight turning radius makes it easy to park. The navigation, bluetooth, I-pod integration and stereo are excellent and easy to use. The seats are comfortable and well heated. No rattles or problems at all -- very high quality.

CRV Tires are Junk

I purchased this CRV in May 2011, after 8,000 miles we got a vibration from the rear of the car. At 23,000 it was so bad I had to replace the tires with still half the tread left. When they pulled the rear tires, there were flat spots so big, the bounced up and down when they rolled them over to the tire changer machine. There was a 4" wide flat spot across the tires. It came with the Bridgestone Dueler HT470 tires. These tires are junk. Another item that disturbes me is the oil is constantly dirty. I started with using the oil life indicator for oil changes, but the oil was so black, I moved it up to 3,000 miles and it is still dirty. Even with the software update it is still bad.

I have had my CR-V EX-L with leather seats for 4 months and I still can't get comfortable in the drivers seat. The seatback is too narrow and the side airbag is costantly digging into my ribs. I have tried moving the seat position every way I can but I still can't find a position where my back is not on the side of the seat. I have not heard of anyone else complaining about this. I am 5'8" and 195lbs. I would like to know if anyone else has this problem. Please let me know if it is just me or is it a real problem. Thanks.

I own a Honda CRV with 40.000 km (approx 26k MIles) on the clock and the engine mounting bolts just sheared straight off. We are very lucky that we are alive to write this post as the engine dropped through the bay. Honda though, despite risking our lives, is trying to screw us by saying it is not covered under warranty. We are disgusted and outraged that Honda Australia is refusing to cover us for a major defect in their car, that is life threatening and obviously a design flaw They have a severe issue with the curent CRV model and are refusing to accept responsibility.

Had problem with Continental tires on my 2011 CRV. At 10,000 miles a road noise started that was terrible. I put up with it longer than I should have. I was told by the dealer that all four tires needed replacing at only 24,000 miles. In reading several forums CRV road noise is common due to lack of insulation. Neither Honda or Continental would assist. They both have to be knowledgable about their issues. Unless Honda has improved sound insulation on the car underside of the new model, I would not recommend buying a CRV.

We bought the car new in 2011. Rolled off the truck special order ex-l. (Didn’t have to pay for pin striping under coatings etc). Literally the entire family has driven it to work school vacation to the ice cream shop and so on. Changed fluids and filters religiously and currently have 154000 miles on it. Get in . Start car. Drive. A Honda.....

Sturdy real Utility SUV

I bought this new and the LX model with AWD. Now with 140000 I can't say anything negative. I have had only an AC compressor replacement that did not throw metal into the AC but went out periodically to give me warning. NO other problems other than my own repair of the common power steering O ring air causing leak. A few bucks an 15 minutes. This care has no rust and I live in michigan with no garage. It's interior shows no wear on cloth seats. NO broken functions, nobs or accessories. This car was truly designed for utilitarian use. We have a new HRV and it is far lest sturdy and utilitarian. The 2011 is rough and better made. With regular oil changes, home done brake jobs that are easy this car is easy to maintain from changing plugs to air cleaners and the throttle body. Nine years old and one tail light replacement. Still average 25 miles per gallon city/highway. I changed the transmission fluid and rear differential with honda fluids every 60000 miles. NO tranny problems or rear end noise. Something an owner should do on AWD hondas as they will make noise. This car has plenty of power from my point of view. NO problem entering freeways or passing. This is a real SUV. Sturdy, comfortable and super reliable.

I have had 3 CR-Vs in a row. If they made it in a hybrid, or brought the diesel version to the USA, I would buy another. It is everything it is advertised to be!

I bought my CR-V two months ago and use it for my company car. I travel 1000 miles (NC, SC and GA) a week. I am 6'1 and a little over 200lbs. I do own two other Honda's (05 Pilot 190k miles, and 07 Accord 120k) so I may be a little biased. The CR-V is the best automobile I have ever owned for my use. The power is more than adequate. I am averaging 27.2 miles a gallon over 6k miles so far. The initial seat comfort is a little harsh but, within a month of driving regularly, has softened. The steering is dead on and tight. I haven't felt any of the "vibrations" I read about in other reviews. Maybe I've just been lucky but I have never had an issue with my Honda's.

Reliable, good fuel economy, excellent overall value. Update - traded the car in for a new CR-V to get all the new safety and convenience features. It's even better than the last one. Update #2 - just lots more miles of trouble-free, happy motoring - Honda style! Update #3 - the trouble-free love affair continues with this CR-V as well as the other two CR-Vs in the family.

bought mine in 8-2011 and have 10k on it already. I love driving it, it rides really nice. It is smooth and quiet. I was surprised to learn that the tires are only good for 20-25k. and how cheesy the seats are, they are hard, and a bit uncomfortable. lack padding and contour. cargo and gas mileage are great. It is good in the snow. I am spooked after reading 2 reviews about the engine bolts sheering off. that is a big worry for me now. hopefully it is not a common issue. overall I love my crv and its safety ratings. also the roominess is great. Im 5'10 & husband 6'5' and we fit & love it.

6500 miles on the odo. Made it through our first northern Idaho winter with no problems. With winter tires we were able to get around almost as if there was no snow or ice on the roads. Gas mileage has been acceptable but not great, averaging 20mpg in mostly town driving. Other than the winter performance, I find it difficult to get very fired up about this car. The transmission shifts up and down abruptly, the interior is noisy and as mentioned below, the headlights are terrible. We've also had some issues with the sunroof refusing to close. I have no doubt the car will start every time and get me where I need to go but some details need to be addressed.

Deficiencies in the CR-V

I have had the car about a month. The drive is nice, fuel economy is reasonable for a CR-V and the interior space is more than adequate. However I find the Honda information on the CR-V EXL with Navigation deliberately deceptive. Two examples ; (a) there is no caller ID available on the unit with the Navigation system even though the technology guide that comes with the car says there is. (b) Honda says there are "heated driver and passenger seats". Well that is true but they don't say that the driver side seat has a heated bottom and back where as the passenger side has only a heated butt. Big difference ! Hope there's a law suit so Honda is punished for these deceptive practices.

Bought this car in Feb. 2011, and I still love it today like I did the day I bought it. Honda quality, looks better than what they did to update it to 2012 (not sure what they were thinking about the back of the 2012 - looks weird), but the real thing here is value. I'm still amazed I could buy this car brand new for the low price I paid for it. A 2011 Kia Sportage with similar options was a couple thousand dollars more. Also, those complaining about road noise should have investigated that beforehand. Honda never claimed this was a super quiet car. Reliable, drives great, lots of room, looks great. Intended to be a family car. You want smooth and very quiet, then pay more next time.

Took delivery on my 2011 EX-L two weeks ago and its a tidy, nimble little package . However the driver's seat is proving so uncomfortable that I can't drive it more than a few minutes at a time. The seat is too small, rock-hard, lumpy, badly contoured , unsupportive (thighs) and doesn't go back far enough. Honda needs to take a serious look at this issue...

Except for the seats, the quality is great. The seats are uncomfortable even with the 10 way adjustable power option. I am a big guy, 275, and after a few hours, my butt becomes sore. The seats remind me of coach airline seats. If I had known about the long term comfort made awful with the flimsy seats, I would of not purchased the car. My wife, 110, also could not find a comfortable position. The climate control is first rate and the radio is the best - the performance is ok but at 40 mph, it sounds like the engine is lugging. Alcohol gas content is critical. I purchased 87 gas at loves in Missouri and the gas mileage dropped 6 gpm and the performance deteriorated

My wife owned her 2011 Honda CR-V for 7 years and only put on 46,000 miles. Dealer gave us a good trade in value of $12,000 on a new (2018) CR-V. We had to replace tires, battery and regular oil changes. 2 or 3 recalls done under warranty. Extremely reliable and dependable vehicle. Good ride and driveability.

Civic SI to a CRV

I recently traded my 2009 Civic SI 6 sp manual transmission for a 2011 CRV w/auto trans. So far so good. Of course it is not as much fun to drive as my Civic SI but it does have the power when you want it. This past winter with all the snow/ice and even a great set of tires made me dislike my Civic so I opted for the 4WD CRV. The ride of the CRV is very nice and smooth and the seats in the CRV are much better. The driver and front passenger seat in the Civic SI were very uncomfortable, Plus the CRV does not have the road noise that my Civic Si had.

Generally speaking, CRV is a much better buy than the RA4, especially for the Gen3. We will have to see if Toyota can catch up with the new 2019 RAV4, but so far for Small SUV, CRV is really the king

Pros: seems like it has good engine, not that strong but lasting. It got timing chain not belt and I hope this could save me on late repair bill. I am very meticulous in keeping the car well maintained, I hope she is good to me too and the relationship between us would last for long miles (hopefully over 200k). Cons: feel hard on driver seat when road is bumpy, several rust spots appear on hatchback door a couple of years ago, battery discharging (very annoying, I believe this is Honda fault, but dealership wouldn't admit this)

BEWARE-Rear view window has poor visibility

If there's someone short standing behind the vehicle, you will not be able to see them because the rear view window leaves a huge blind spot. I bought this car solely because of safety features, not realizing this problem. Definitely recommend a back up camera even though I never needed one in past vehicles. Also, the gas mileage is no where near as good as it should be. Still love the car as it's very comfortable to sit in with good lower back support. The car also handles perfectly. The AWD handles beautifully in the snow and ice. I would have not made it through this winter without these features! I would recommend this car 100% if the owner got a back up camera.
