The Honda bulletproof liability falls short
I did buy this vehicle used from a honda dealership. I was not aware of the transmission issues this car had until well after the 30 day warranty expired. When I bought the car, it mileage was approaching 139k. Now, here's my dilemma. I have a 1998 Acura Integra with well over 370000 mile and not yet have I ever had a transmission issue. Accord because I would have to be a car. I was really hoping for the same reliability. That did not happen. After doing some research, found that between 1998 - 2002 that this vehicle have transmission issues. I'm not blaming the vehicle or any of the previous owners for the issues. Nor am I blaming the manufacturer because I should have follow my instincts and garden a 5-speed manual transmission rather then the automatic. So that's my bad other than that the car was amazing. For a car of it's age in mileage, the ride quality was really good. Very easy and after the shift into 3rd gear, very fun to drive. If I'm honest, I would not have traded this car in for the current car I have now (2009 Subaru Tribeca/ I've written a review on this car as well) if the transmission wasn't failing.

SUCH A GREAT CAR!!!!!
this car is seriously the best car i have ever owned. it just turned over 240,000 miles and only ever needed its routine maintenance done and a new clutch. i have owned this car since it was new and it still drives like it did when it was straight out of the dealership! these cars had issues with the automatics so i would stick with the 5 speed. its much funner anyways. oh and this has been driven down back roads and dirt roads all its life, just had the allignment checked and it was totally perfect to spec! that is awsome!!!

Solid Car
Bought this car new 9 years ago. Now have 126M miles. It replaced a 1992 Accord my wife wrecked. The 1992 was a little smaller and more fun to drive. They keep making these Accords bigger and bigger. Honda replaced my transmission for free a few years back. Even gave me a rental for the day, so no sweat off my back. Great reliability, great interior design. Exterior is a little bland, especially compared to the new Accords. Driver seat hurts my old back after an hour or so. No rattles, no rust , no repairs except for normal maintenance. Mileage could be better, especially around town. Hope to drive it another 5 years until I can afford a new one!
Follow up review 4 years later
I reviewed this car in October 2005. Now it is four years later, I still have the same Accord EXV6. I'm even happier after this much time has passed. I've made a lot of improvements to the sound system that resulted in complete disassembly. This is an excellent vehicle to work on. Everything is secured well. Panels can be removed and replaced without squeaking or rattling. It is still a great vehicle and I'm always getting compliments when people see the odometer. Do not hesitate to pick this one up!
V6 coupe better than any domestic by far
With gas prices so high I'd get the V4 instead but the V6 can keep up with any domestic coupe. The ride quality is outstanding and as always it's very reliable. Get the recalled transmission fixed (free at Honda) and the performance and already smooth ride improves. This is my 3rd Accord in a row and until they disappoint me I'll keep on getting them.
Yawwwwwnnnnnn.
This is my fourth Honda car and I'm certain it's my last. My third car was a 1995 Honda Accord V6 EX and I thought it was just a bad year for Honda. My 2001 2 DR V6 Accord is a little better but the design and ride is still just average. The driver's seat seems loose. Everytime I brake or accelerate the seat rocks forward or backward. Dealer stated there are no problems with it so I guess it's just poor engineering. The car also seems to have difficulty finding the right gears in traffic. I'm always lurching forward or back because the automatic gears can't decide on an appropriate gear. I imagine this car will rust soon just like my other Honda's did. Time to look at other makes.
Rhonda's Review
I had a 1998 almost identical and loved it. It got totaled, so I replaced it with the 2001. I love it as well. I think that it is extremely stylish. I love the comfort and the leather. I really enjoy the climate control system. I have yet to find another car that I would want to trade it in for.
love this car
I purchased this car in 2008 from a friend who was the second owner. I drive this car like crazy around town and have put on over 100k miles in the last few years. My car now has about 220k miles and is still running great. The clutch still hasn't needed to be replaced. Have had to do the normal maintenance on it like belts, spark plugs, tires, battery, brakes and of course the AC, but that goes for any old car. Yeah the windows don't even roll down any more, but that's because both windows had been broken into and had to be replaced by first and second owners. I honestly think this car can go at least another 100k if I continue to take good care of it!!!
Not the most reliable...
Bought a Honda due to excellent ratings and their reliability that you hear so much about. Had two expensive repairs. Had to have the tranmission replaced with low mileage. Honda covered and extended warranty to 100k. Also had a rear main seal that needed repaired with around 50k mileage. Honda refused to admit is was faulty design/workmanship even though all independent sources indicated otherwise. On the 2001 LX model, don't believe the hype that this car is the most reliable out there.
Practical and reliable - not bad looking
Thinking of giving it to my daughter now, but this car has been "bullet proof". Did a lot of commuting the first few years and had no problems. Ride a bit stiff and noisy with Firestone tires, but very sure footed. Fit-and-finish from the factory was outstanding, much better than my Toyota. I agree with others that the brakes could have been made a bit better. If you can find a clean one - not necessarily mine - it would be a great used car!
01 accord coup
26k mile now with no problem.
Great value car in long run
Let's see i got this car for $5.5K with 142K miles . Tranny cost me $2k. Have been driving in city for last 4 years and have 183k miles . Can't beat that .
Accord Coupe a sweet ride
I have always been impressed with Honda products as far as the amount of product you get for the dollar spent. This new accord with the V6 does one better than the old Hondas in that it is really a great car, still safe and reliable but now it is also powerful and able to perform.
No more warm and fuzzies
2001 Accord isn't up to snuff. Transmission problem after 64000 miles. Dealer says bad transmissions in 2000, 2001, and 2002 models. Warranty extended because of the problem. Remanufactured tranny put in yesterday, only to arrive at dealer for pick up to be told the "new" tranny is faulty too. Told 1 out of 6 Honda transmissions fail. Also had problem with oil pan recall. Needed breaks at 55,000, other repairs too soon in the life of the car. Could have bought a clunker with no loan and brought it for in for same amount of repairs. I've lost the warm and fuzzies I had for Honda and my Accord specifically.
Probably Best Looking accord, but otherwise mediocre.
I'm not going to talk about reliability, because that is assumed, demanded and granted for this brand of car. A/C motor is weak, My kid's R/C car has more power!!! Battery cables suck, they corrode like nobodys business, even if you put those inexpensive greasy, fuzzy red and green washers on the terminals. Front seats give you back pain, butt pain, and are incahoots with an unforgiving suspension. Seats on my 5th gen. '96 EX accord were much better. I have no idea what all these other reviewers are yapping about, but fuel economy is DEPLORABLE!!! Dealer replaced the transmission under warranty, but you wouldn't even expect Hondas' design team to screw it up! Just knocking on wood now!
Awesome
Awesome! My Accord is the most reliable and top quality vehicle. This is my second accord, and I will not buy anything else
This car is great
This car is awesome. It's my first too. It's a shame is doesn't have quite the sporty look I'd like but I got it for a great price and it has everything I want too. The engine is powerful and the gas mileage is incredible. I would recommmend this to everyone.
Good car bad radio and dealer
The accord is a very good car. I purchased a 4 banger so power is low, but fuel mileage is very good. Quite a bit of road noise. Great suspension and brakes (abs w/ex model). Car seems to require very little maintenance, unless you follow the dealer suggestions which will bankrupt you and probably do more damage than good to a very well assembled car. Rear seating is average and trunk is small. Radio reception is very poor and I was very pleased to find out the dealer could have cared less. Their loss as I no longer have the car serviced there and will not repeat purchase.
Honda seats
Great car, however for trips longer than about 2 hours, the seats can be very hard and painful.
Solid vehicle
Car has been trouble free. Only normal maintenance required. I always find that if you treat a vehicle (Honda, anyway) well it will last a long time. Just took a 5000 mile trip and averaged 32 mpg on the highway. Generally get about 22 in the city. We have never had a repair and the car has never failed. While I would like a new car, I have found very few that get the mileage I have experienced. I think I'll just stick with my EX.
what a great car!
For the price if you can live without power windows and locks is the best deal Honda has in the Accord. I also have a 2000 SE and sure it is great to have antilock brakes but the VP is all I need.
Surprised and Pleased
Left work to test drive the 330i. Came home with an EX V6. Mileage is better, better interiour design, and the performance seemed better.
Honda Accord EX-L
The Accord has been comfortable and functional yet not terriably exciting. Our car has had the air bags stolen twice in less than two years and is a direct result form being such a popular car. As much as I like hondas I will never purchase another until the something has been done to change the conformity of the airbags. I know it is cheaper for Honda to have uniform airbags in every Arura and Honda but this only increases the value (ability to fence) on the black market.
Get a stick, for better fuel economy
Overall, my experience has been good. When I first bought the car, I there was a problem with the shifting. I was given a loaner, and since then it has been perfect. The dealership was very relaxing and professional. (I owned an Eclipse before, and Mitsubishi service is simply horrific.) I am happy to be driving one of the most reliable cars on the road.
An awesom car!
I used to drive a Jetta which I loved, but decided to go with a Honda after my friend put 179k on her '89 Accord, which ran incredible. I have a '02 Accord EX Coupe (only 4cyl), which could be faster, but thats what performance intakes and exhaust systems are for. Its extremely comfortable and rides very smooth. Gas mileage is good, which helps me with the amount of miles I put on it. The car is good looking, which will turn heads once I finish with the work I am doing to it. Bottom line...this car will run forever if you take car of it and is one of the most reliable cars out there. Resale value is also excellent.
Torn between new tranny or another car
Bought my car used October 2006 with high mileage (106K), but felt comfortable given Honda reputations (friends'/family members' Hondas average 250K). I should have done more research on car complaints to avoid the tranny issue - would have got the extended warranty (poor decision on my part). I really like the car though, having put 50K+ miles on it already. I love road trip travel often, so I just get the oil checked and go! I'll probably put the $$2200 in to replace the tranny because the body condition is MINT and all other aspects are working properly.
Good but not great
It's been very reliable but the threat of transmission failure hanging over my head has always annoyed me. I change the ATF every 20K. I bought a Honda for reliability and not to think about the poorly designed A/T. MPG is only OK for a 4 cylinder. I'm not crazy about Hondas insistence on using only 'genuine Honda fluids'. The A/Chas never been 'freezing' cold like some other cars I've owned. Despite all my complaining it has been a good car. It's just that when you buy a Honda you expect so much. I feel the motor will do 200K but the tranny won't. I'd buy a Ford Fusion next.
Love my V6!!!
An excellent car with a smooth ride, though somewhat noisy on freeways. Mine is a 2002 and haven't had problems so far. With tinted windows, rear-end spoiler and fancy rims, it's a beauty and a road beast-at once. Love it!!!!
Can't Go Wrong
In the last 19 years I have owned 2 cars, a Honda civic and now a Honda Accord. Between the two of them I have replaced the tires and the exhaust on the Civic--that is it! For dependable, well made cars you can't go wrong. The size of the sedan is good. Good trunk size, good passenger size, nice feel, vision and little things like cup holder, glove box etc. Dash is easy to read, all controls are placed sensibly. I don't drive a lot but the car is comfortable and good on gas.
good car, good price.......can't beat
I have a V6 accord, and for the price, you can't really beat the reliability, comfort and ergonomics. It is pretty spacious for its size too.
BEST DAMN CAR-PERIOD
my fourth Honda--and my first V-6...rarely do i find a product which provides me with so much satisfaction. If you have never owned a Honda--you owe it to yourself to make your life much more trouble-free...all that and leather!
Fun to drive, but a little noisy
I leased this car last May and currently have right under 10K miles on it. Overall, it is a nice car. The paint looks nice and the interior is finished perfectly. It hasn't had any warranty service on it and is absolutely reliable. Over the last month, it has developed a rattle in the drivers door that is pretty annoying and there is much more road noise than I was expecting from a car that costs over $25K. Maybe it is the tires, but I'll never find out since these tires will be on it throughout my three year lease and I plan to turn it in.
Purchased used...
My Accord is fully equipped, with leather interior... had 89k on it when I bought it and has 112K now. Absolutely perfect. It's a dream to drive (with one exception to be noted) comfortable and great ergos... took a 400-mile trip and aside from the usual stops, drove straight through. Got out of the car like I'd gone to the store and back... that comfortable. Styling is impressive to me, the engine is very responsive and I've gotten a high of 34mpg on the road... 21 +- around town.
Not all hondas are reliable
The car has visited the dealer at least 2 times a month from a faulty leather to the oxegen sensor to the cat converter. i have had to have the keys reprogamed twice and the cars have faulty alignment that creats uneven wear in the tires. this is in fact the worst new car experice by far
My 01' Accord EX V6
I love my car. I have had no problems with her in almost my year of ownership. I have been across country twice and she runs just as good as she did when i drove off the lot. Hondas are #1!!!
great car
love to drive my honda a little disapointed in the gas milage the drivers seat not that great for my commute to and from work had to replace front rotors and pads already at 60000 kms still very pleased
Hey look, everyone has your car :(
If you want a good, average car that will not let you down then buy the car. If, however, you dont want to drive something that everyone else is driving or want a little excitement in your daily commute, do not opt for the accord. The interior is extremely comfortable. Very spacious (I am 6'0 210 and fit very comfortbaly) Rear seat is surprisingly spacious as well as the trunk. Suspension is a bit taut makes for a bit of a rough ride. Also, the 4cyl. just aint gonna cut it, at least go for the 6cyl. for increased performance.
Honda Accord V6 Coupe
The car is very smooth Cd player and speakers are nice. The price was a little high for what i got there is not that many cool features. But i whould tell you to get this car it is Fast Fun and has great comfort in this car.
Middle Aged but Still Rocks
The car had some problems with the air bag sensor which required to be replaced by the dealership [under warranty]. With a few upgrades, new shocks and struts + some after market 18 inch alloy rims and handling has greatly improved. [~$2500 for entire package]. With a few interior upgrades such a new MP3 compatible stereo and GPS, completes the picture.
Honda no more
Purchasing my 5th accord was suppose to be a no loose deal, previous models were exceptional cars to drive. I was sold a lemon when I bought my new 2001 accord. The car shakes and rattles, the weatherstripping is poor, and the stereo belongs in a dodge aries k car.Neither the dealership nor the service center in CA has been any help. I've basically been told "It's yours now" and my concerns have been overlooked. Maybe Honda should concentrate on quality control at its plants instead of making top sales. Honda you've lost a loyal 17 yr owner for good.
Bad transmission
I have had the Honda Accord 3.0 L V6 sedan for 9 years and I drive it only to work with a mileage of 90,000. The transmission failed but otherwise it looks like brand new with regular maintenance. Fixing the transmission costs $4,100 at the dealer's and after 7 years is no longer covered by warranty. I though that I bought a reliable car that will drive up to 150,000 miles but not so! I will never ever buy Honda again.
Reliability 1st.........Performance 2nd
The title says it all. This is a Honda and expect it to perform well over 200K miles if its taken care of. The ride is excellent for a small car. Most cars of this size are relatively bumpy for this price range. The performance lacks though! Acceleration begins avout 3K RPM's and above. Unfortunately the stick shift was not offered in a 6 cylinder until 2003, and a stick was what I wanted. Gas mileage is about 25 city and 31 hwy.
comfort and reliability
I use my car for outside sales and spend roughly 5 hrs a day driving. My car offers me comfort and reliability. I like the fact that the blind spots are minimal it gives me a wide view of the road and everything around me. I enjoy the huge trunk, great for shopping and hauling things you wouldn't normally be able to fit in a trunk. I test drove several other makes comparable to the Accord and none of them could compare. The Accord has a tighter suspension and lets the driver feel in control.
my accord
I bought this car through Autoweb. I got what I wanted: a car that I don't have to think about, carries 4 adults, and enough options to keep my mind occupied. The only things I don't like are the gas mileage 19 mpg average, but 25 on long trips, and there's a sqeak in the passenger door that drives me crazy.
Good Value for the money......
I think this is an excellent car for the money. However, I keep having issues where I need to get the throttle body cleaned every 30,000 miles or so. If I don't do this then the car will hesitate when I press the gas (this is very aggervating). The engine is okay, but the 4 cylinder could use a little more pep.
Hmm........Honda--such a great car??
Ok, I am the second owner of this car. I bought this 01 Honda Accord from my step-mom at the beginning of May 2010. As I write this review, the check engine light has come on (and gone off) twice. In the length of time that I have "known" this car, there have been multiple problems. I know for a fact the trans. has been replaced twice, first time was to replace the original faulty trans, and the second replace was because of a faulty trans. and it was within three weeks of first replacement. This is my first Honda and I am truly wondering what is so great! My '94 Escort has fewer problems than this "wonderful and reliable" Honda, my next car probably won't be a Honda.
A
If you are looking at this review, you too need reliable family transportation. You know that the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are above all competitors in terms of design, quality and reliability. But the Accord is much more fun to drive, especially when you drive much faster than you really should in a family sedan. If you like to drive and need a family sedan, drive an Accord and a Camry and feel the difference yourself. Then decide which to buy.
Updated review after my first year
I have had this Accord for a little over a year, got it with 95k and today 07/14/2010 it has 111,895 miles. It needed a lot of maintenance to get it to the condition i have it at right now. I have replaced the timing belt/water pump, tires, battery, transmission fluid, front and rear brakes, spark plugs, and last week my rear main seal failed and it leaked about half a quart of oil in 2 weeks. It was an unexpected, not to mention early failure so if anyone else had that same problem let me know cause it was an expensive repair.I am happy that my automatic transmission is fine and overall, i am quite please with the car and plan to keep him for a while.
Good Car
We have a 5 speed manual Accord that has been fun to drive. It is bit of a dog in first gear when the A/C is engaged, otherwise plenty of power with the 4cylinder - 5speed combo. The AC the second year does not cool as expected. Paint chips easily on the front plastic bumper.
MyFirst Accord
My girlfriend drives a Honda and I loved driving it which resulted in me buying my 2002 Accord EX V6. The low price was an extra bonus. Overall this car runs smoothly and you can really feel the 200hps working. However, I see myself going to the gas station more often then expected. It's a V6 but it's also a Honda! I expected to get at least 25mpg if not more but I'm averaging 21mpg(highway + city). Now I'm kind of afraid to drive the car just becuase I know afterwards, the car will be saying, "Feed me now or be stuck on the road." Thinking back I may just have paid a little more and get the new Camery.
