Edmunds spotlight: What you need to know about the Macan EV

To start, know that it's going to be a little confusing. The electric version of the Macan is an entirely different vehicle, even though it shares the same name and has similar styling. In addition to its EV powertrain, it has a different chassis, a larger interior and upgraded technology features. There will simply be two new trim levels that will be electric: the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo. They both have dual electric motors, all-wheel drive and a pretty big battery pack with 100 kWh of capacity. The main difference between these two is power: The Macan 4 will make 382 horsepower and the Macan Turbo will crank out an eye-opening 576 hp. Our rating below is for the gas versions of the Macan, but know that the electric versions do basically everything better (except for making noise). Competitors to consider

There aren't many straightforward rivals to the Macan, as its price point puts it up against larger and more comfortable competition. But that points to the trade-offs of opting for this Porsche: You're forgoing some utility for fun behind the wheel. The BMW X3, Genesis GV70 and Mercedes-Benz GLC all offer more interior space and greater comfort, especially in the back seat, where the Macan gets a bit claustrophobic. How does the Macan drive? The Macan feels every bit a Porsche on a twisty road. The way stops, steers and handles gives you complete confidence, and it's a joy to drive along uncrowded backroads. But we've found a big difference in acceleration between the base four-cylinder engine and the available V6. The Macan T we tested, which has the four-cylinder, sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in respectably quick 5.5 seconds.

However, that's the number we recorded at our test track when using the Macan's launch control system and Porsche's Sport Response feature (a system that primes the engine to give max power). In typicall driving, the four-cylinder engine feels much more sluggish. Other more powerful trims like the S and GTS are much more satisfying, and true enthusiasts should likely start their search for their ideal Macan there.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Macan? The Macan has a firmer ride than most other small luxury SUVs. You'll feel bumps and imperfections in the road, but it's not harsh or uncomfortable. Models equipped with the available air suspension have a smoother ride; it's worth getting if comfort is a priority. It's a similar theme when it comes to the front seats. The base front seats are firm and lack adjustability and are not the best for long drives. Seats with more adjustability are available, but it's unfortunate that you have to pay extra for them.

The climate system works and the controls are easy to use, but the placement of the vents means it's occasionally hard to feel the air coming into the cabin. You'll also be able to hear the fans whirring away. Road and wind noise isn't as well muted as in other luxury SUVs, and the base four-cylinder engine can sound gruff at times.

How’s the interior? The Macan's gloss black center panel has backlit icons that serve as touch-sensitive buttons. It works well enough, but the huge slab of piano black attracts fingerprints almost instantly, and the greasy look of the panel cheapens the interior. Beyond that, though, the materials are top-notch, and the driving position is low and easy to dial in. It makes you feel like this is a sporty place to be, as any good Porsche should.

The rear is a different story. Getting into the back can be a cumbersome affair for larger adults and those with more limited mobility. The narrow door opening and sloping roof mean you're liable to bonk your head on the way in, and once you sit down you'll realize knee and shoulder room are seriously lacking. Other SUVs in the class offer a more comfortable and accommodating back seat.

Technology

How’s the tech? The Macan's center touchscreen has sharp-looking graphics and is easy to use. That said, there's nothing truly standout about the Macan's technology. Its voice recognition isn't as intuitive as what you'd find in the equivalent BMW or Mercedes. And both of those brands do a better job of integrating Apple CarPlay, while the Porsche crams it into just 60% of the display's real estate. Smartphone integration was also slightly unreliable in our testing, and we needed to restart our test iPhone several times to get wireless Apple CarPlay to work properly.

Our test car also had driver aids that could use some refinement. The lane keeping assistance feature didn't keep our Macan within the lane as well as it should have, and the parking sensors were far too sensitive, leaving massive gaps between the Porsche and any obstacles that were nearby.

Storage

How’s the storage? A regular knock on the Macan has been its size, or general lack thereof. And with just 17.6 cubic feet behind the second row, the Macan's cargo space is very small for its class. The BMW X3 offers 28.7 cubic feet of space with the rear bench up, and even a Golf GTI offers more room back there. Small items won't have a much easier time finding a home, either. There isn't a good place to put your phone except the center console, the cupholders are too small, and your wallet and other items will likely fill up the doorbins rather quickly.

Got small kids? The rear seat isn't as roomy as the ones in other small SUVs, but it's still large enough to accommodate a rear-facing child safety seat (as long as you don't have the front seats slid back too much). There are Isofix anchors on the outboard seats that are easily found beneath plastic covers.

Range and Efficiency

How are the range and efficiency? The Macan is about average when it comes to fuel efficiency. The EPA says the Macan should get 19 mpg combined or 21 mpg combined depending on which engine you have underhood and which trim you opt for. Pleasingly, we recorded 23 mpg combined from our four-cylinder Macan T on our evaluation test route, indicating that the EPA's numbers should be viable in real-world situations.

Is the Macan a good value? It's hard to argue that the Macan is a good value. It's smaller than most everything else in the class, and base models are saddled with the least powerful engine Porsche will sell you. Porsche also leaves out many options that other brands like BMW and Mercedes normally include as standard. It drives and feels like a Porsche and is certainly well built, but sometimes just having the right "feel" can't make up for a car's hefty price tag. Additionally, Porsche's warranty is mid-pack when compared to other luxury automakers.

Be it good or bad, the Macan is one of the most popular Porsches on sale today. But considering that they all look largely the same, only a small group of real enthusiasts will notice the differences between the base car and the top-flight GTS. Base models are also far too expensive for the equipment and performance they deliver, while more powerful models command a hefty premium. That said, the Macan (in T, S or GTS guise) is fun to pedal on the day-to-day and would make for an engaging and satisfying everyday companion. Just don't expect to get the "thumbs-up" from passers-by that other Porsche owners so frequently enjoy.

Which Macan does Edmunds recommend?

We recommend the Macan S and its combination of performance, personalization and value relative to its larger Cayenne sibling. The Macan T holds appeal with its sharp handling and dynamics, but we still prefer the added power the Macan S brings to the table.

Porsche Macan models

The 2024 Porsche Macan is a small SUV that's available as a traditional gas-powered version or an all-new electric. The gas version is available in four forms: base Macan, sporty Macan T, Macan S and Macan GTS. The Macan and Macan T have a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the Macan S and Macan GTS feature a turbocharged V6 engine. Each one has an all-wheel-drive system and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with shift paddles, which Porsche calls PDK.
