A Lemon Can Be Red, Too...
Bought this car used with 46,000 miles on it. Have replaced all four rotors, the radiator, the AC system. AC is broken again. Thermostat has been replaced 3 times. Freeze plugs blew out on interstate highway at about 50,000 miles and had to have head gasket job. Car was in the shop nearly every six weeks from the time I bought it...
Reliability
Reliability good except for possible transmission problems in the 40 thousand miles range. Overhaul can be expensive and various computer sensors on transmission and engine will activate check engine light. This will cause a smog check inspection failure required by several states and in turn require expensive repairs to search for the sensor and replace it. Another problem area may be in the anti-lock brakes which requires expensive pump replacement if light remains on.

Don't know what to do
I purchased Taurus when I retired, 40,000. I'd never had trouble with Ford cars before. I've had to pay to have motor mounts put on and the engine light stays on and everytime I go and pay to have it fixed the light comes back on a few days later, so I just leave it on now. The transmission is also going on the car. Ford dealers are awful people to deal with. With all this wrong with the car, it still rides good and starts up without trouble never leaving me stranded. I'm afraid to get rid of it because all the cars I've had before (GM) were even worse than this one. Next time I'll try a Chrysler.
I'll never learn
I got this car second hand from a relative who kept very detailed service records and followed the maintenance schedule religiously. The vehicle has roughly 118,000 highway driven miles and there are no outstanding recall issues. So, after 2 horrible experiences with a 1991 and a 1993, I foolishly purchased another Taurus with similar problems. Currently, the transmission is being overhauled after losing 4th gear. I was hoping it was the MLP sensor or something relatively benign, however why should I have expected anything less than another outrageous repair.
