Used 2018 Ford F-150 Consumer Reviews
Recall Heaven
- The 302 - 5.0 V8 sounds like there is flamenco dancer with castanets dancing under the hood. Lifter clatter so bad it sounds like a diesel. You can start the truck up, let it run for 2-3 full minutes on a 70 degree summer day, and then head onto the road. Going up through the RPM range the motor clatters like my old 1988 302 Bronco use to do with 170,000 miles on it. It has done this since day one. I broke the motor in with the conventional oil in it, and at around 1650 miles I changed the oil and went to a top notch full synthetic oil. No change. Don't matter if you have 87 octane ethanol gas, 87 octane 100% gas, or 91 octane gas......it clatters. What a joke! This is the 5.0 Coyote.....same as the Mustang engines? Do they clatter like this too Mustang owners? Also, I own 2 Fords as of right now, a 2014 Ford Fusion and the 2018 Ford F150 XLT Crew Cab. I have had 5 recall notices in the past 2 years owning both vehicles. Hey Ford, why don't you just give your customers a blank Recall Booklet with #'s an let them fill out the problem dijour and they can fill it in with latest publicized information. I usually find out I'm about to get a recall from some Internet news source reporting the latest FoMoCo recall and make and model effectivity years/Vin#'s. They can then bring in the little forms to the service manager at their local dealership and tell them "I'm here for the engine block heater cord recall, or the transmission cable recall, or the door latch recall,or the door handle recall...." or whatever comes next recall. Looks like this months "scheduled" (June/2019) recalls are for the Explorer/Lincoln SUV's! Which is good, I still got to get the F150 in to get the heater cord snipped off until they can get that rework/redesign sorted out. I have been a Quality Engineer for 32 years......not sure I will buy another Ford product again, after being a loyal customer for over 25 years. Not much change since this review. Engine clatter is a little less.......but anytime you accelerate with a luke warm motor it clatters. And no, this is not that audible chain slap phenomena that these engines are notorious for. That's irritating too.....sitting at idle or driving slow, rev the motor and as the rpms dwindle it lets out a timing chain slap that is WELL documented on the net. The fit ,finish and overall features and ride are great. But the attention to details issues resulting in recalls and the motor noise issues are bizarre.......especially at this late stage of the 5.0 302 motor evolution. UPDATE 7/5/2021: The clatter continues! Yup......still sounds like a flamenco dancer with castanets, and tap dance shoes on.......clickety clack clack clack. And now that I have ready other reviews, it can also be added to the "uses oil" 5.0 302 hall of fame. Didn't think I needed to pay attention to my 3 year old trucks oil level after a change, I'm mean it gets 8.8 quarts of full synthetic and I didn't dream in the 4-5 thousand miles between changes it would drop a quart...but shame on me......it has and does. I was amazed when reading all the other reviews on various sites about the clatter and timing chain slap, but didn't realize oil consumption was also an issue. It sure is! Again, overall the truck is solid and rides and drives nice. But the 5.0 engine noises and oil consumption is an absolute joke! Wonder how receptive Ford would be to replacing the whole engine for free, with the non-clattering, non timing slap, no oil using 5.0 version. From what I have read........not very. I am absolutely amazed Ford was able to screw up a engine platform that has been around for decades. Very innovative! Well lets hope the class action law suit gets their attention and results for us owners who made the mistake of buying a 5.0 F150 with our hard earned money!

Ford F150 2018 XLT 2.7 Ecoboost
Before shopping for this vehicle I considered some other options. The Ram 1500 had a much better lease deal, but since I wanted the option to keep the vehicle longer term I decided to lease this Ford. I am now about 3 week into it. It drives overall great, but occasionally I feel some shaking of the transmission. It does it at the lower speed, so still feel its to soon to really know what is going on. My milage was about 22mpg mixed city and highway on week one, then dropped to about 18 so I am also trying to figure out this mystery. I am still driving with the same gas tank from the dealership.

Pleased with my purchase
Traded in my Cadillac for the F-150. The truck had more gadgets than the Escalade, & cost less. I have a 16 Y.O. F-250 that I can't wear out, hope this truck is as good.

Much better than my previous Silverado
I used to have a 2011 Silverado and was always a GM person. I was very displeased with this last truck and decided to give Ford a try. I bought a used race red 2018 F150 XLT (with the 302A/chrome package - so most of the options) crew cab 4x4 with the 3.3L V6 and 6 speed automatic. It had 14,000 miles on it and I paid just a hair under $30k. I picked this engine combination bc I wanted to put a Western Half Ton plow on the front and was told it was not compatible with the turbo engines. I also wanted the 6 speed transmission because I read the 10 speed was having some issues and was more cumbersome. So far, after 9 months and 7k miles I love the truck and am much more pleased than the Chevy. The comfort is better including seats, driving position, ride, and handling. The engine and transmission are more refined than the Chevy and actually see to have more get-up-and-go. Fuel economy is an average of 20.2 mpg over 7k miles; I've averaged as high as 24.5 mpg on a 400-mile highway round trip with the cruise set at about 74 mph (this is MUCH better than my Chevy which hardly broke 17 mpg.) The start/stop feature actually isn't that bad. I was worried about it at first but it's more intuitive than it seems and I don't mind it. As winter approaches, I may miss the "auto 4WD" feature my Chevy had — (it's only available on the Lariat and up model on the F-150 I believe.) The interior is nice but hard plastics are abundant. I wish I would've gotten leather seats - maybe the Lariat would be nice with the leather stitched dash, wood grain and such.

Christ and Gray Ghost 2 saved me
MY 2016 was totaled along with a new Honda Pilot and another F150. If for no other reason the 2018 F 150 was the only way to go. Love the new 10 speed and added torque.
