2023 Explorer Timberline

David D, 01/06/2025
2023 Ford Explorer Timberline 4dr SUV AWD (2.3L 4cyl Turbo 10A)

I purchased this Timberline a couple of days before Christmas 2024, so I'm still getting used to it. I traded in a 2017 Ford Edge Sport. The Edge was an excellent car, with plenty of power, quiet ride, and fully loaded. The Explorer Timberline is not a fully loaded trim package, so I'm getting used to not having some of the extras that I had grown accustomed to. That being said, the Timberline has a 2.3L 4-cylinder engine that provides ample power and does not require premium fuel. The 10-speed transmission is usually smooth and unobtrusive. You will never mistake the 4 cylinder for a V6 given the sound, but I am generally happy with the powertrain. The exterior color of my Explorer is the forest green. I'm still on the fence with the color. In some light it looks almost black. I had seen blue Timberlines, and I think I prefer that color, but Ford only offers green interiors on the Timberlines, regardless of exterior color, so I went with the green exterior to match the interior. Other key features of the Timberline trim include suspension taken from the Police Interceptor package and a limited slip rear differential. I really like both of these features, and the ride does not seem to suffer, even with the all terrain tires. The interior is reasonably quiet at highway speeds. The B&O sound system has me a bit perplexed, as I swear the Sony sound system in my Edge sounded better. I chose the Timberline trim over the XLT or Limited trims due to the different suspension and limited slip rear differential. I chose it over the ST trim because I cannot stand the dash and large tablet-looking screen in the middle in the ST (and the Platinum). Time will tell if I continue to enjoy the Timberline, or if I upgrade to an ST in a couple of years when the 2025 models are more affordable as used offerings.

Built in Annoyance and Problems!

Jose J., 12/12/2024
2023 Ford Explorer Limited 4dr SUV (2.3L 4cyl Turbo 10A)

The navigation system and standard, double-horn NOISE!!! Not Good! Overall, it is what you expect a highly priced, brand-new vehicle to be regarding safety and general performance. However, these Ford Explorer models do have very annoying and inconvenient problems: 1. The double-horn NOISE when you leave the vehicle on while leaving for a moment with your fob on your person. This is probably the most frustrating of all. This horn blows twice in rapid secessions, if you open and close the driver AND passenger doors! No option to turn this "safety feature" off. 2. The navigation system is inefficient with much cheaper devices such as a Garmin or your phone's Waze navigation applications being much more reliable than the Ford Explorer's navigation. 3. To schedule any maintenance via a Ford dealership will be a long wait. Usually, weeks out at a minimum. These two faults will often remind you of how you should have done more research and maybe purchased something else, something more affordable. Overall, it does the job you expect it to, but it has annoying and inefficient features. Disappointed.

Absolutely love my new Explorer. First time owning a Ford and I am very happy with it. The Explorer has many luxurious features. Heated seats and steering wheel, captains chairs in the back, sunroof, leather interoior, tons of safety features and more. Highly recommend.

Love the car, hate SYNC issues

I have always been an Explorer guy, have had several and have never had one issue with them--just bought a used 2023 limited with 28000 miles and am happy with it, except Ford really choked on the SYNC feature. Sure, they have a rolling update due out anytime, but I cannot hook up my phone via bluetooth until that happens. I am patient and know they will take care of it, but what a pain. B and O sound system is great, pick up is fine, car responds and is great in the mountains, but that SYNC...

Only dislike the assembly line details, like doors molding and overhead console door uneven.
