2018 Ford Explorer 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

2018 Ford Explorer Limited (6cyl) Purchased new in 2018. Door locks would stop working, Rear Hatch door stopped opening, Plus other "quirky" problems. Ford dealer could document problems but, could not find any cause or or reason for the problems. The car is only driven once or twice a week +/- 15 miles and occasional 150 miles. Problem found: Sitting in the garage for days, the onboard computer keeps operating, draining the battery. A Ford design is to shut down "non-essential" equipment if the battery becomes low. Problem solved by plugging is a small battery trickle charger with connector located by left windshield corner. Additional problem: Had Ford dealer update Syn3 navigation GPS system for latest maps. Still woefully out of date, not showing major streets built over 5 years ago. Overall: Comfort, handling, viability, heated/cooled seats and heated steering wheel very nice. Not our old Lincoln Town Car, but it will do.

Exploding rear window !!!

I have a fairly new Ford Explorer that I got for my wife to transport our children. There is about 35,000 km on it and so far one of the rear callipers seized up on it. I went to the dealership to see how we can address the situation. She told me they would need a couple days to see what’s wrong. First off it only takes 20 minutes to change. Second I was told I would need to rent a car while they see what’s wrong because they don’t give out cars. As she was explaining this to me another customer came in and she put me to the side to talk to this other person....? He wanted an oil change and she would have a car for him while this is taking place. So it was a smack in the face to me. I told this girl I bought this explorer for my children but that didn’t seem as important as this man getting his oil changed. So I bought what I needed and fixed it myself in less than 20 min. Thanks ford. Second the rear window spontaneously exploded while it was parked. And apparently it is a common issue that they do not cover because they do not stand behind there products. Safety is not there concern and a warranty means nothing to them. All I can say is buy a Honda 😀

I really enjoy driving my Ford Explorer. It has everything you need for all your gadgets to plug in, numerous beverage holders, a third row just in case you have extra guest or your hauling a big purchase. The second tow has their own heating control. Great vehicle for road trips or just driving around the city.

We R retired & hit the road as full time RV’rs 3years ago. We’ve had 4x4’s all our adult lives EXCEPT!! the last three years. We R horse people. So,bye bye 2x4. BUY this FORD SPORT!! It is a REAL 4x4, not an AWD. Also, this particular vehicle can be dingy/flat towed up to 60 mph. The Twin Turbo is FUN!

Explorer vs Highlander

When we purchased our Explorer we tried out a Toyota Highlander but the Explorer was much more comfortable and had much more power. We wanted to buy the Highlander but driving the Explorer ruined it for us. Pretty much the same for the Land Rover Discovery. If you want one of those vehicles just buy it and don't drive the Explorer. My wife fell in love with the Explorer.

Bought the base for my wife Oct 2018. The BEST month to buy. Was excellent for three years. Handled like a sports car. Sold to carmax in Feb 2022 at 35k miles for what I originally paid. Bought a 2021 4cyl turbo (new) which is awesome.

Multiple recalls. At 68000 I got stranded after check engine light came on. Stuck injector !! Advised by Ford that it isn’t covered by their so called certified warranty. I spoke to 2 dealerships and 2 people at Ford. A total joke that Ford doesn’t stand by their craftsmanship. I will never buy another Ford ever again. I have had 5 and all have had reliability issues.

Never liked FORD, always a Dodge girl.

I was in a car accident and totally my Jeep Grand Cherokee; which I absolutely loved. Before my Jeep I drove a Dodge Durango for 11 years. I have always been a Dodge/Crystler/Jeep girl/family. After the accident I started looking into purchasing a 2-3 year old SUV. I looked at Audi, Mercedes, Lincoln, Cadillac, Jeep, Toyota, and finally the 2018 Ford Explorer Sport. I was incredibly surprised by the comfort of the seats, ease of access to controls and touch screen monitor. The ride is extremely smooth, sound system is nice; totally shocked. Needless to say, after 40 years as a Dodge girl, I am now officially a FORD fan!!!! Thanks for making such an incredible vehicle.

The only thing I wish that was added to the arsenal, is the ability to tow a little more. Other than that, drives great. Easy to drive and see out of and run forever. My Dad and Uncle Bill bought the same year and drove them for almost 300 thousand miles. And they gave them both to young relatives. Who still drive them.

Safe and smooth drive

The car drives very smooth and seats are absolutely comfortable. The car is equipped with many safety programs. The only I don't like about this car is the complexity and expensive way of changing its high/low LED lamps. This is a 3.5L car and burns gas pretty fast. But I am OK with that because I don't have long distances and often trips to make. UPDATE: I leased the 2018 the explorer in 2018 and the lease will expire in June this year. And because I love driving this car I have decided to buy the lease out and make it my own. This car has all the safety and comfort measures you can think of. It also has a sliding sun glass roof, back and front cameras and many other safety gadgets. I only wish that the low/high head lamps assemblies set up was different. To change an LED lamp in the low/high head lamp assembly means replacing the whole assembly. Expensive!

Best SUV I’ve ever owned

My fist vehicle was a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and it lasted me 475000 miles till I finally sold it and I still see her on the road to this day. After that truck I was chasing a vehicle like that for years until I finally stepped into my 2018 Ford Explorer Sport. I bought it used in 2019 with 22000 on the odometer and as of today I just hit 74000. First off the power train on the vehicle is amazing, when you shift into sport and just punch it, the Explorer reacts fast and hauls ass. It grips the road and is responsive to every action. The AWD is amazing, the knob is a little weird to get used to but Ford tuned the AWD system for any terrain and it takes it all on. I have taken it through dirt trails, Snow, and even mud from a hunting trip and it handled the situation no problem. The interior is nice with the red striped leather, now I have added weather tech mats all around in the vehicle since I have kids and I must say it is a good purchase to save the floors and the third row back seats from wear and tear. The towing capacity is great and I can haul my small trailer and two quads no issues. The only issue I have had since owning this vehicle is 1 of my turbos fail but Ford instantly took my vehicle in, threw me in a rental, and replaced both turbos and extended my power train warranty. I must say I didn’t expect to fall back in love with an explorer since ford got rid of the Sport Tracs. But Ford has perfected the new Explorer and I recommend it to anyone looking for a mid size SUV.

Lost my faith in Ford

Kicking it Old Skool , 10/10/2023

Let me start off by saying I was an avid Ford supporter and fan since my teens, I started my mechanics apprenticeship at a Ford dealer and got my License at the same Ford dealer, I owned all the classics while I worked there from the small Tempo, to the T-bird SC, the Cougar XR7, the Mustang 5.0,the Lincoln Mark VII, then the Aerostar, to the Aviator, to the Expedition Max, these vehicles all had power, class and unbelievable reliability as they were built with pride and built to last, I switched to a Mercedes GLK 250 Diesel when the fuel prices skyrocketed and enjoyed the fuel mileage but missed the power of the Fords, so I traded it in and bought a used 2018 Explorer "bad move", this truck was in showroom condition and was fully maintained from the research I did but after owning it for only 6 months the issues arrised, from both front wheel bearings making noise and needed to be changed out, to the alternator failing and killing the battery due to the failed "battery monitoring system Ford decided to adapt to "bad idea my opinion", then 2 months later the electronic power steering system failed on my wife and she was lucky to be in a parking lot at the time and not on the Freeway, a month later the check engine light came on and I had both upstream Oxygen sensors fail, about a month later the drivers side rear brake caliper started leaking at the parking brake pivot bolt, and now I have Cam Phasers making noise on cold startups ! I do not change my oil at the recommended Ford intervals I change it at halfway because as a technician I know dirty oil causes chain and valve train wear, so even though I use full synthetic and change the oil more than recommended the Phasers still went bad. I don't understand why the manufacturers cannot leave a good thing alone, all these new technologies for "fuel savings" or better emissions cause more issues than anything else, my 2008 Expedition Max with the 5.4 liter engine on 93 Octane had better fuel mileage than this 2018 Explorer 3.5 Ecoboost, the Expedition after 320,000 Km and regular maintenance had all original parts except the starter that started to get weak at 310,000 kms, even my 5.0 Mustang or 4.6 DOHC Lincoln Aviator had better fuel mileage and no issues what so ever, my advise is go back to the Old Skool technology that worked flawlessly and beef up the catalytic system for emissions so we can drive our new Fords with confidence, I have to rent a vehicle to do long road trips because I no longer trust my Explorer, I am currently going through a Ford dealer to see if they can help me on this Cam Phaser issue with Ford and a Goodwill claim, if not bye bye Ford hello Honda or Toyota
