Bought my Exp used at 17k miles. Had the radiator issues but was smart enough to change radiator type after 2nd time. Never had another issue. Ford paid for everything. Shift console issue at 26k was also fixed by Ford at no cost. Was able to fix a thermostat housing leak issue myself for less than $50 back in 2008 and never had another issue. Since then, no issues outside of normal mechanical. Yes, you will need to do brakes and wheel bearings depending on how you drive. I did my own brakes 3 times, easy to change. Wheel bearings once. Rocker panel on passenger side has some hidden from view rust, no other rust despite WI winter and road salt. No transmission problems while regularly pulling various 2000 to 3000 lb trailer/loads but gear changes are noisy. Quiet and comfortable ride. Great heat and AC. AC/heater flap door failed recently but you tube video showed how to easily fix for$60. Great turn radius better than most cars. Gas mileage in city driving 16. Highway 22-23. Towing 17-18mpg. This has been a great vehicle. I see a lot of them still on the road. Not picking on Chevy, but never see any similar vintage Trail Blazers on the road. Low cost to own and maintain has been exceptional. Looking forward to next 100k. If engine or tranny died tomorrow, I have gotten my moneys worth out of this vehicle.

I have been a Explorer owner since 1994, this is my 4th or 5th Explorer. The worst EVER. I will never purchase ford again. My car has been to the shop many times. 4 times for transmission problem. they cant fix it and they are just jerking me around. The transmission jerks hard and it has started to bother my back. I am very dissapointed with ford and I am sure there will be a law suit either on my own or class action.

I purchased the truck brand new, I brought the truck in for Recall (shift Plate) very difficult to shift, I told them I was having a hard shift jolt when putting it in reverse like being rearended. They told me they couldn't find the problem, they put in a new PCM. (new computer) after the new PCM they stated there still was no answers for the transmission problem. I asked if it had anything to do with the recall they said no! I didn't understand how they could say that if they didn't know what the problem was? anyway they asked if they could pull the transmission for $600 and then they would call me and let me know what damage needed to be repaired. I declined to pay $600 for a diagnostic.

I bought my Explorer with 18000mi. in Feb of 09'. Thought I was in heaven till the engine started making a hideous noise, pulled off highway, dash went red and car shut off! Has 42,212 miles, Ford will not make good on this. Again, they say they've never heard of this! I think it's time for the Attorney General's office to step in. No warning of this! They tell me it's a maintenance issue. I also have a 96' Explorer with 257000 miles that my son is now driving! I seem to have maintained that without a problem! Been driving Ford for 26 years! How 'bout something for loyalty? Anything but this. There is a $5,680 price tag on a new engine and radiator. Really Ford? Quality is not job one.
