Bought new in SC with a dozen miles on it. 11 Years later, have just had to replace the clutch at about 80K. Extremely reliable. Not really any problems to mention. Just a great all-around dependable SUV.

Another Seemingly Immortal X

1993 Sport 2wd with power everything still acting as a daily driver while ambiguiously carrying the classic vehicle card. Almost 500k on it....and everything Ive heard most other people have had to replace....mine has not. All thats broken is the front four speakers are rotted out but still sound nice at reasonable volumes, head unit was replaced with a bluetooth unit (right inline with the shifter - safer than any modern implementation ive seen), original A/C compressor has seized, and Ive only had to replace the Radiator....everything else is either original or a normal maintainence item. This is a Ford that thinks it's a current day Toyota, lol. Even the 4 wheel ABS still works. Still starts right up without a single complaint...either leaks so little oil it's not easy to see or no leaks at all. In spec compression on all six cylinders. Since I started doing my own transmission work it's never shifted better. If gas mileage goes below 18mpg, or 16 with a lead foot its time for a tuneup...putting it back in the 18-24mpg range. 65mph steady gets 23.9mpg. So much torque despite the anemic horsepower I can shift high at lower RPMs...I only go past 2000 at over 45mph. I've taken it to 109mph on our last roadtrip. Steering is still tight, quality shocks make a huge difference in handling..pick your's per your preference. And it still passes smog and yawns about the ease of modern day traffic. Im driving this thing till it dies. This thing has bested a Mk1 Rabbit, several Hondas, and a few Toyotas in it's lifetime in reliability..and I dunno what Ford used for paint...but whatever it is, they need to go back to that. Still a near showroom gloss and my frame and crossmembers have minor surface rust or are so clean when I degrease them during maintenance it looks like the frame of a dealer showroom...at frickin 29 years old. Ford Trucks...the best never rest indeed.

Good Car, Questionable 5 Speed Transmiss

Bought this sport SUV for my daughter but learned to like it. Overall it has been reliable with some problems that others have noted: inside door handle broke off, gas gauge broke at 60K, air vents are shoddy, FM cassett died at 100K. Only big repair has been 5 speed tranmission- shifting 1-2 grinds!! Repaired but grinds again! Important to change trans fluid and use the RIGHT fluid. Stability better with big tires, no air bags scare me. OK for running chores but don't like using it on the freeway.

Good SUV until the transmission went out @ 163,000. But that should be expected. Before that barely any problems to mention.
