My last Ford

I have owned Fords since 1999. Owned Escapes since 2007. I lease and traded in my 2017 for a 2020. Loved my 2017, really dislike this Escape. It is loud, uncomfortable, shifts roughly, and so many other issues. The backup camera went out right away, and now the second recall. I was planning on road trips with this car as soon as it’s safe to travel. I can’t imagine driving or riding in it for several hours.

I bought my beloved “Big Red” in April 2020, and a year later I couldn’t be happier. It’s been a perfect match for my “solo female outdoor lifestyle.” I live in an extreme 4-seasons climate, and the car has handled itself beautifully. That includes 95-degree days on the Interstate and snow-stormy drives home from the ski mountain, at night. Once you’re on the highway you push a button, and the car basically drives itself. I really enjoy the bells and whistles, such as being able to listen to Audible audiobooks while driving - the sound system is excellent. I always say “the car is smarter then me,” since it’ll alert you to any dangers and do things such as turn on the headlights and brights for you. The indicators are highly sensitive and accurate; for example, after a cold spell it let me know the tires were a bit low on pressure. Always tells me when wiper fluid is low, etc. The 12v plug is great for a cooler or heated lunchbox. The roof rack has been perfect for transporting paddleboards. (Btw, you can definitely fit a mountain bike in the trunk, over the back folded-down seats.) Drives great, Nav system is fantastic (love how it shows you where traffic is), still a joy to drive and spend time in!

I have had vehicle for 4 1/2 years. It’s been reliable and fuel efficient, averaging about 30 mph overall. Engine vibrates when it drops to 2 cylinders to save gas but otherwise drives nice. Very good emergency handling (had to make quick emergency stops and maneuvers on many occasions). It’s fairly comfortable and roomy for compact SUV. Interior is a little cheap looking but the technology and safety features are more important to me. Currently have almost 80K on it and have never had a reliability issue.

I commute 130 miles a day 5 days a week. My car buying priorities are price, comfort, fuel consumption and reliability. I've got an Audi and a bunch of motorcycles for the weekends. I traded a 100K mile Ford Fusion SE in on this Escape. No issues in 100K miles. 2 minor issues with the 164K mile Focus before that. No issues with the 175K mile 2009 Fusion I Traded on the Focus........so I wasn't concerned about reliability. I was concerned about the 1.5L 3cyl being up to the task. I was wrong. No, its not the over 200HP of the 2.0 but 181 HP moves it alone just fine. There doesn't seem to be much turbo lag but there is some hesitation to downshift. If you need to go, you have to put your foot in it and make it downshift. Once you do, it moves along just fine. It will take some time to adjust to how soon it upshifts when it comes to merging onto the highway. The adaptive cruise is awesome. It take 30% of the work out of my daily commute. Going 80 mph on the highway and using the cruise I've averaged 30 MPG during my commute. The other safety features are not intrusive in any way. If they do bother you they are easy to deactivate. Unless under full throttle, its not overly noisy in any situation. It handles like what it is. A crossover SUV. Its taller than a car and exhibits some body roll. Nothing I find offensive or concerning in my daily driving. The brake peddle could feel a little more firm, but it stops just fine. The navigation and audio controls are easy to access through the touch screen. The wheel mounted cruise control and audio controls are easy to use. I like manual climate controls and these are pretty simple to use. No CD player.......WTF? Overall the interior feels durable and well made, if not super refined. The materials appear easy to clean/keep clean. Seats are comfortable and heat up quickly. The headrests should adjust fore and aft more. The rear seats adjusting is a nice feature. They also fold down and back easily. Cargo space is just fine for its size. If you're complaining about you probably should have bought something bigger. Havnt had a chance to play with the drive modes or see how the AWD does in snow yet. I'm very satisfied so far. Yes, if I drive it back to back against our Audi I may be disappointed...but the Audi sticker price was more than double the sticker price of this car. If you have Champaign taste on a PBR budget...life is gonna be full of disappointment.

2018 to 2020 = Less car for the money!

I was severely disappointed after trading in my 2018 Escape for the new 2020 version. Let's start with the glove box door handle, probably the most flimsy cheap feeling actuator handle and assembly that I have ever used... it just feels cheap. The map pockets on the doors are about 1/4 the depth that they were before, and while saving Ford money on materials, I cannot use them for storage of items as I previously had. Replacing the gear shifter with a knob that you turn may be modern, but where do I rest my hand when I drive now? I understand that most people do not use CD players any more, but I listen to lots of books on CD while driving, no CD player, no AUX input to plug it in. The arm rest between seats is smaller and does not have the top shelf that I placed items in that I needed quickly, its just a big pit now. I drive the 4WD models and the calibration on take off is extremely choppy compared to my 2018 and the breaks are very very touchy. My 2018 had tinted glass in the back window which was great for security / theft prevention.... clear glass on this (same) model. Dual temperature control = gone. Trying to set presets on the radio is a hassle because when you manually tune it automatically goes to the next set of presets which is a nuisance and not at all intuitive. The extra "bubble" mirror attached to the side view mirrors is gone and replaced with the warning light in the mirror - I would much rather be able to see a hazard then have to see if the light is on in daytime traffic when the light is barely visible. All in all, Ford did a great job on reducing content and materials which will add to their bottom line but when I get to turn this POC in in 3 years, they will lose a 25+ year customer. I expected the same quality that I enjoyed on my last 5 Escapes but find something else that I don't like about the car almost everyday! Note that I have only had the car for 2 weeks so I expect to find even more disappointment moving forward.
