The Underrated SUV That Doesn't Get Any Respect
I've read a number of reviews that rate the Escape as adequate, or marginal, or outdated. Usually these are from reviewers who think anything built by Honda, Subaru, or Toyota are better. I'm here to tell you that the Ford Escape is as good as any of them, costs less, and shouldn't be discounted as a viable SUV because it's American. We needed to trade in our ailing 2008 Jeep Liberty and researched the market very thoroughly for a small SUV that would meet our needs. The Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5, all fine vehicles, were priced higher than the Escape and none of the ones we saw had satellite radio, a must for us. The Escape was priced considerably lower than any of its competitors and our Escape SE came equipped from the factory with Sirius/XM, something the Japanese manufacturers should consider doing. We've found the Escape performs much better on the road than the Toyota or the Honda. It gets up to speed much quicker, rides as well as the competition, and has competent handling. The fuel mileage is quite an improvement from our Liberty. My only complaints are that the interior has too much hard plastic and cargo space is slightly less than we had with our Liberty...both deficiencies that my wife and I can live with. Two years later, the Escape is still going strong. Other than one recall repair and routine maintenance, it has not had to go to the shop for anything.

Engine is toast at 30k
There is a known design flaw in this engine. Through extensive research I have found that the head gasket blows between Cyls 1 and 2, leaking coolant into the oil and it kills the engine. The problem is so widespread that the new engines are backordered for 2 months. The factory can't keep up with replacements.

Check Engine Light - regularly happening
Bought a brand new 2018 Ford Escape 1.5L EcoBoost with 6 miles on it. Took it in for its first oil change at the recommended 5,000 mark and 2 days later back in with an oil leak. It has been in regularly since for check engine lights. Spark plugs replaced 2 times, Cylinder head replaced and currently in getting a short block replaced. Have not had the car 2 years yet and I have been back to service over a dozen times due to issues and check engine lights. I would not recommend it and I have owned Fords my whole life with the exception of a 2 year span where I had a Sonata. I don't want this care anymore and can't sell it to anyone in good faith, trade in value would put me to upside down in another so here I am stuck with a new car under 40K miles, that I don't like, don't trust and still 3 years left to pay on it. FORD should make it right for all the issues everyone has had with this engine.

DO NOT BUY
I purchased a 2018 Ford Escape SE awd with the 1.5 EcoBoost engine brand new in March of 2018. From brand new I noticed the loss of engine coolant. The dealer took a leak down test, found nothing, topped up the coolant and sent me on my merry way. For almost the next two years still kept loosing coolant. Took it to the dealer every time to have coolant added and finally asked them to do another leak down test and at 65,000 km (40,000 miles) found that the block was cracked and replaced the engine under warranty. Then left front wheel bearing failed. Now the right front wheel bearing has failed at 86,000 km (53,750 miles) along with the water pump (21,000 km 13,000 miles) and both rear lower control arm bushings (not covered under warranty at about 53,000 miles $550. Which I am fighting with Ford Canada so far have lowered the price to about $200. which to me is not acceptable) Oh I almost forgot, a leaking front CV boot. Substandard parts, substandard SUV. NO LEMON LAWS IN CANADA!!!! I still owe $19,000 on this piece of junk.

Needs new engine.
Our 2018 Escape 1.5 with 27000 miles needs a new engine. Apparently 40,000 other ones do too. They said it may take 4 months. Yea!!!!!! Update it took 2 engine replacements and 5 months to get the car back. Ford said the time had pasted for a buy back.
